NDT Training and Certification in Utah

Short answer: a Utah technician or employer gets ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT training from Atlantis NDT through live online classes, live-virtual sessions, or onsite delivery at the employer's refinery, depot contract site, mine, mill or fabrication shop anywhere in Utah. Courses cover Level I, II and III in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, every programme is led by an ASNT NDT Level III, and certification is issued by your employer under its written practice.

Utah's inspection market is concentrated but intense. Almost all of the state's refining capacity sits in a few miles of the Wasatch Front north of Salt Lake City. Hill Air Force Base near Ogden is one of the Air Force's main depot maintenance centres, and northern Utah builds solid rocket motors and composite aerostructures. West of the capital, one of the deepest open-pit copper mines in the world runs a concentrator and smelter. The Uinta Basin produces waxy crude that travels to those Wasatch Front refineries. Each sector asks for a different mix of methods, and many of them run on tight schedules that make sending technicians out of state for training expensive. This page explains how training and certification work for Utah employers and technicians, what Utah regulators require, and how to get a quote. Request a Utah NDT training quote and we reply with options within one business day.

Where NDT technicians work in Utah

Direct answer: Utah NDT work clusters in five areas: the Salt Lake refining corridor (North Salt Lake, Woods Cross and Salt Lake City), northern Utah aerospace and defence (Hill Air Force Base, Ogden and the rocket-motor sites), the Salt Lake Valley's mining, metals and manufacturing base, the Uinta Basin oil field, and central and southern Utah power, rail and mining.

The Salt Lake refining corridor

Five petroleum refineries operate in Salt Lake City, North Salt Lake and Woods Cross, packed into a narrow strip between the mountains and the Great Salt Lake wetlands. Together they supply most of the fuel used in Utah and much of the surrounding Intermountain West, and they process both Rocky Mountain crude and the waxy crude from the Uinta Basin. Turnarounds, mechanical integrity programmes and routine repairs at these plants create the state's largest concentrated demand for UT thickness surveys, PAUT and TOFD weld inspection, RT of new piping welds, PT and MT on repairs, ET on heat-exchanger tubing, and VT of pressure equipment. Because the refineries sit so close together, contractors serving them often move the same crew from one site to the next during a busy turnaround season, which rewards technicians who are certified in several methods.

Northern Utah: Hill Air Force Base, Ogden and the rocket-motor sites

Hill Air Force Base, between Layton and Ogden, hosts the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, which performs depot maintenance and modification on fighter aircraft, landing gear, components and strategic missile systems. Depot work and the contractors who support it use ET, PT, MT, UT and RT extensively on airframes, wheels, landing gear and structural components, under written practices that must satisfy military and prime-contractor requirements. In Box Elder County and on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley, large solid rocket motor plants build propulsion systems for space launch and defence programmes, using RT, CT and UT to inspect motor cases, propellant, bonds and insulation. Ogden, Clearfield and the surrounding industrial parks add aerospace machining, composite fabrication and defence electronics suppliers.

Salt Lake Valley: mining, metals and manufacturing

West of Salt Lake City, the Bingham Canyon copper mine and its concentrator, smelter and refinery in the Magna area run haul trucks, shovels, crushers, mills, conveyors and pressure equipment that need regular UT, MT, PT and VT on shafts, welds, gear teeth and structural steel. A magnesium plant on the shore of the Great Salt Lake, steel and metals processors, and a large inland port and distribution network add more inspection work. The valley is also a composites centre: carbon fibre production and commercial aerostructure plants in Salt Lake City and West Valley City make composite and bonded parts for airliners, which drives demand for UT, including PAUT, and for technicians who understand composite flaw types.

The Uinta Basin

Around Vernal and Roosevelt, the Uinta Basin produces waxy crude and natural gas from thousands of wells. Gathering lines, gas processing plants, compressor stations, heated tank batteries and truck and rail loading terminals keep radiographers, UT technicians and VT inspectors busy, working to API 1104 for pipeline welds and ASME B31.3 or B31.8 for plant and gas piping. Because the basin is several hours from the Wasatch Front over mountain passes, local contractors value training they can take without leaving the field.

Central and southern Utah: power, rail, steel and mining

Emery County and Millard County host large coal-fired and converting power stations, including a major generating complex near Delta that is transitioning to gas and hydrogen-ready units. Boiler tube, header and piping inspection during outages calls for UT, RT, ET and VT. Box Elder County in the far north has a steel mini-mill near Plymouth, Iron County has iron ore mining near Cedar City, and the Union Pacific main lines through the state add rail and car-shop inspection. In the southeast, uranium processing and potash and vanadium operations bring specialised inspection, and St. George has growing construction and manufacturing. Utah's military depots in Tooele County and the test ranges in the west desert add more defence inspection work.

Bridges, highways and water

The Utah Department of Transportation commissions fabrication and in-service inspection of steel bridges on I-15, I-80, I-84 and I-70, which typically follow AASHTO/AWS D1.5 with heavy use of UT and MT. Large water projects, aqueducts, penstocks and dams operated by federal and local water agencies add weld and structural inspection.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Utah employers

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and Level II courses in eight methods, plus Level III exam preparation. The table shows each method, the levels available, how Utah employers typically use it, and what a trainee needs before starting. Your employer's written practice sets the exact hours and experience required.

MethodLevelsWhat Utah employers use it forPrerequisite
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)I, II, III prepRefinery thickness surveys on the Wasatch Front, mine and mill equipment, composite aerostructures, bridge weld UT to AWS D1.5Level I: none beyond employer requirements. Level II: Level I training plus documented experience
Phased Array UT (PAUT)II, III prepRefinery weld and corrosion mapping, composite panel inspection, thick structural weldsUT Level II recommended before PAUT
Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)II, III prepHeavy-wall refinery vessels, power plant headers and pipingUT Level II recommended
Radiographic Testing (RT)I, II, III prepUinta Basin pipeline welds, refinery piping, rocket motor and aerospace castings, power plant pipingRadiation safety training required under Utah rules before handling sources; employer-specific
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)I, II, III prepLanding gear and aircraft components at depot level, mining shafts and gears, steel mill products, bridges and structural weldsNone beyond employer requirements
Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)I, II, III prepAircraft and missile components, aluminium and titanium parts, stainless welds, machined aerospace hardwareNone beyond employer requirements
Visual Testing (VT)I, II, III prepPipeline and plant construction welds, pressure equipment, mine structures, bridgesVision test per written practice
Electromagnetic Testing (ET)I, II, III prepBolt holes, wheels and airframe structure at depot level, refinery and power plant heat-exchanger tubingNone beyond employer requirements

Utah employers often build multi-method pathways. A refinery contractor may train new hires in VT and UT Level I, then move them to UT Level II and PAUT once they have turnaround hours. An aerospace or depot contractor may certify technicians in PT and MT Level II, then add ET for wheel and bolt-hole inspection. A mine maintenance team may need MT and UT so it can check critical components between contractor visits. We plan those pathways around your written practice so classroom hours, exams and on-the-job experience line up. Level III candidates can see the ASNT Level III training and exam preparation page.

NDT training by city in Utah

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT serves every Utah city through online and onsite delivery. Salt Lake City has a dedicated training page and a Practical NDT simulator page; Ogden, Provo, Vernal, St. George and the other industrial centres are covered by this hub. The table links each existing local page, and the paragraphs below explain which NDT work dominates in each city.

Salt Lake City. The capital is Utah's main NDT labour market. Refinery contractors need UT, PAUT, RT and VT technicians ready for turnaround windows; the mining and smelting complex needs MT, UT and PT on heavy equipment; and composite aerostructure plants need UT technicians who understand bonded and laminated parts. Inspection companies based in the valley also send crews to Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada. See the Salt Lake City NDT training page and the radiographic testing in Salt Lake City service page for local detail.

North Salt Lake and Woods Cross. These small cities host most of the refinery capacity in the state. Contractors here need multi-method technicians who can move between sites during the same season, and refinery owners expect certification records that will pass their own contractor audits.

Ogden, Layton and Clearfield. Depot maintenance at Hill Air Force Base and its contractor community make this the most PT-, ET- and MT-intensive part of Utah. Employers need technicians whose certifications are backed by a written practice that satisfies military and prime-contractor audits, and many also need Level III oversight for procedure approval.

Magna and West Valley City. The copper smelter and refinery, rocket-motor production and composite plants sit close together here. RT and UT on motor cases and composites, and MT and UT on heavy smelter equipment, are the main skills.

Provo and Orem. Utah County's manufacturing, construction and fabrication shops need VT, MT and UT to AWS D1.1, and fast-growing construction programmes need inspectors trained quickly.

Vernal and Roosevelt. Uinta Basin contractors need RT, UT and VT for gathering lines, plants and terminals, and value online theory because the drive to the Wasatch Front is long and weather-dependent in winter.

Delta, Price and Cedar City. Power plant outages, coal operations and iron ore mining create demand for boiler-tube UT, ET and RT, and MT on heavy equipment.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Utah, step by step

Direct answer: under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, certification in Utah is employer-based. Your employer's written practice sets the rules; you complete classroom training and on-the-job experience, pass general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III, pass a vision test, and your employer certifies you. Utah has no separate state NDT licence, but radiography is regulated by the state.

  1. Your employer adopts a written practice. Based on SNT-TC-1A, it sets training hours, experience hours, exam content and pass marks, vision requirements and recertification intervals for each method and level. If your company has none, we write it with you; see written practice development.
  2. Complete formal classroom training. Take Level I and then Level II training in your method, live online or onsite. Hours follow your written practice; the training requirements matrix shows SNT-TC-1A recommended hours per method and level.
  3. Build documented on-the-job experience in the method at your Utah workplace, logged and verified by your employer.
  4. Pass the general exam on the principles of the method.
  5. Pass the specific exam on the procedures, codes and equipment you actually use, for example ASME Section V, API 1104 or your customer's aerospace specifications.
  6. Pass the practical exam on real specimens with real flaws, graded by a Level III against a checklist.
  7. Pass the vision exam for near-vision acuity and colour contrast, repeated at the interval in your written practice.
  8. Get certified by your employer. Certification is tied to that employer and based on documented training, experience and exams.
  9. Maintain and recertify at the interval in your written practice, and add methods or levels as your career develops.

Radiography licensing and other Utah requirements

Direct answer: Utah is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography with radioactive sources is licensed and inspected by the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control, under the Utah radiation control rules. Boilers and pressure vessels fall under the Utah Labor Commission; intrastate natural gas pipeline safety under the Utah Division of Public Utilities.

Industrial radiography

As an Agreement State, Utah licenses most radioactive material used in the state through the Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control. A company doing gamma radiography with iridium-192 or similar sources needs a Utah radioactive materials licence, or reciprocity recognition if it holds an NRC or other Agreement State licence and is working temporarily in Utah. Industrial X-ray equipment is registered with the state as well. Radiographers and radiographer's assistants must meet the state's training, examination, supervision and certification requirements, which parallel the federal rules in 10 CFR Part 34. Federal sites in Utah can have their own arrangements, so confirm with the site owner. RT method training under SNT-TC-1A, which is what Atlantis provides, covers technique, exposure, film and digital imaging and interpretation; it sits alongside, not instead of, the radiation safety training and radiographer certification Utah requires. Always confirm current requirements with the Division before you deploy a crew.

Boilers and pressure vessels

The Utah Labor Commission's boiler and elevator safety programme inspects boilers and pressure vessels in the state. Utah follows the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and National Board inspection practice, so repairs and alterations need NDT performed to ASME Section V by personnel certified under the repair organisation's quality programme. Refinery owners, power plants and repair shops therefore expect clear, auditable certification records.

Pipelines

The Pipeline Safety programme of the Utah Division of Public Utilities, within the Department of Commerce, inspects and enforces federal pipeline safety rules for intrastate natural gas transmission and distribution operators under certification from PHMSA. PHMSA oversees interstate pipelines directly. Pipeline welding inspection usually follows API 1104, with ASME B31.8 for gas and B31.4 for liquids, which drives demand for radiographers and UT technicians in the Uinta Basin and along transmission routes.

Codes Utah employers commonly use

Some Utah employers also ask for API inspector or CWI credentials for specific roles. Those are separate schemes that Atlantis does not train; our programmes cover ASNT SNT-TC-1A method certification.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Utah

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT has no training centre in Utah. Theory is delivered through live online or live-virtual classes, and practical training and exams are delivered onsite at your facility, using your equipment and specimens under ASNT Level III oversight. Utah crews train without losing turnaround or production days.

For individual technicians, online NDT training covers the classroom portion of Level I and Level II. You attend live sessions with a Level III instructor, ask questions in real time, and work through method principles, equipment, technique, codes and interpretation. Practical hours and the practical exam are then completed with your employer, on the equipment and parts you will actually inspect.

For employers training a group, onsite delivery is usually most efficient. We schedule classroom and practical sessions at your refinery contractor yard, depot contract facility, mine shop or fabrication plant, use your instruments, reference standards and specimens, and build the course around your procedures. A Woods Cross contractor gets UT and PAUT on piping mock-ups; an Ogden aerospace supplier gets PT, MT and ET on its own parts; a Vernal pipeline contractor gets RT and UT on weld coupons that match its procedures.

Utah's calendar shapes scheduling. Refinery turnarounds on the Wasatch Front cluster in spring and autumn, pipeline construction in the Uinta Basin slows in deep winter, power plant outages follow each owner's cycle, and depot contractors often train between aircraft inductions. We plan cohorts to finish before your busy window. Larger programmes run through corporate NDT training. Ask about onsite training for your Utah crew.

For Utah employers: written practice and Level III services

Direct answer: SNT-TC-1A makes the employer responsible for certification, so every Utah NDT employer needs a written practice and access to a Level III. Atlantis NDT writes and updates written practices, reviews procedures, administers exams, and provides Level III services for companies without a Level III on staff.

Many Utah NDT employers are small or mid-sized: a radiography contractor in Roosevelt, an aerospace machine shop in Clearfield, a fabrication shop in Orem, a mine maintenance department near Magna. They need certified technicians but cannot justify a full-time Level III. That gap is where most audit findings come from: training records without hour counts, practical exams with no graded checklist, vision tests out of date, or a written practice copied from another company that does not match how work is actually done.

For broader Level III consulting, see our NDT consulting services and our guide to SNT-TC-1A certification. Book a Level III consultation for your Utah company.

Practise before your practical exam

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT's Practical NDT simulator lets Utah trainees practise 12 NDT methods in five 3D environments before their practical exam. It builds familiarity with technique, scan patterns and indications, but it is practice only and does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.

The Practical NDT simulator includes an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. That spread maps neatly onto Utah: the aircraft hangar for Hill Air Force Base contractors and aerostructure suppliers, the oil and gas site and storage tank for the Wasatch Front refineries and Uinta Basin facilities, and the welding workshop for fabrication, mining and bridge steel. Trainees can repeat scans and explore indication types before handling real equipment in front of an examiner.

Salt Lake City trainees can also use the Practical NDT Salt Lake City page. For written-exam practice, try the UT Level 2 practice questions.

Your instructor

Direct answer: Utah programmes are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT.

Anoop leads course design, delivers Level III-led instruction, and oversees the exams and records that make certification defensible under SNT-TC-1A. His focus is practical: connecting method theory to the procedures, codes and parts your Utah crew actually inspects, and helping employers build written practices that hold up in audits. Ask about his availability when you contact us about Utah training.

NDT training in Utah: frequently asked questions

How do I become NDT certified in Utah?

Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you. Complete Level I and Level II classroom training in a method, log on-the-job experience, pass general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III, and pass a vision test. Your employer then issues certification under its written practice. If you are not yet employed, online classroom training prepares you, and certification follows once an employer documents your experience.
