Two certification systems share one metro, and they do not talk to each other
The mistake that costs Denver candidates a year is treating "NDT training" as one product. It is two. NAS 410 governs who may perform, interpret and accept NDT on aircraft, spacecraft, missiles and engine components. SNT-TC-1A governs pressure equipment, pipelines, structural steel and refining. NAS 410 says "shall" throughout — nothing in it is optional. SNT-TC-1A says "should", and the employer selects, modifies and documents what it will enforce inside its own written practice.
The consequence is practical. A technician qualified to a refinery written practice who applies to a space prime does not arrive with transferable Level II status. NAS 410 imposes tighter vision requirements, requires examination on aerospace parts rather than generic specimens, mandates NANDTB grading for Level III instead of employer grading, and fixes recertification at five years. The refinery route allows an employer-graded Level III and a three-to-five-year interval the employer sets.

The method mix Denver actually buys
Front Range aerospace demand concentrates in surface and volumetric methods suited to castings, forgings, welded assemblies and bonded composite structure. Fluorescent penetrant leads, because it is the workhorse for machined aluminium and titanium parts. Eddy current follows for surface and near-surface cracking on conductive components. Radiography and digital radiography cover castings and closure welds. Ultrasonics covers bondline integrity and thickness on machined structure. Visual testing sits underneath all of it and is the cheapest credential to hold.
The overlap between the two lists is ultrasonics and penetrant. That overlap is the reason a Denver candidate who certifies in UT and PT first stays hireable regardless of which employer calls back.
The NAS 410 route, clause by clause
NAS 410 is published by the Aerospace Industries Association and is the personnel standard the US aerospace primes require of anyone performing NDT on flight hardware. Its structure resembles SNT-TC-1A — Level I, II and III, training hours, experience hours, examinations — but the enforcement is different in kind. Requirements are mandatory rather than recommended, and the employer cannot dilute them in a written practice the way SNT-TC-1A permits.
The three provisions that matter most to a Denver candidate are the vision requirements, the aerospace-parts examination requirement and the Level III grading route. NAS 410 vision testing is stricter and repeated more frequently. Practical examinations must use aerospace hardware representative of what you will inspect, so generic weld coupons do not qualify you. Level III candidates must sit examinations graded by a National Aerospace NDT Board, not by an internal Level III.

The SNT-TC-1A route: Commerce City and the DJ Basin
Suncor Commerce City is Colorado's only refinery, running roughly 98,000 barrels per day, with Suncor's own materials citing up to 103,000. It carried out routine maintenance and upgrade work in March 2026. A single-refinery state means the fixed-equipment inspection market is concentrated: when Commerce City is in a turnaround window, contractor demand for UT thickness and phased array technicians spikes, and when it is not, that demand largely disappears from the metro.
The DJ Basin absorbs the slack. Weld County produces close to 90% of Colorado crude, and the basin is dominated by Chevron, Occidental and Civitas following consolidation — Chevron holds roughly 600,000 net acres in the basin after the PDC Energy acquisition. That work is pipe-centric: girth weld radiography and automated UT during construction, then in-service ultrasonics, MT and in-line inspection support.

Where a Denver candidate sits the examinations
The written examinations are the easy part logistically. ASNT delivers NDT Level II computer-based tests through Pearson VUE, which has test centres across the Denver metro. The general examination is 50 multiple-choice questions in two hours; the method-specific examination is 40 questions in two hours. ASNT's published 2026 fees for the initial general-plus-specific package are $740 for members and $820 for nonmembers, with retakes and industry-sector add-ons at $370 and $410.
Practical examinations are where Colorado has a gap. ASNT recognises three Authorized Exam Centers — Houston, Marietta in Georgia, and one in Saudi Arabia — and its Houston site at 912 Gemini Street is the only location delivering the full suite including hands-on practicals. Nothing equivalent exists in Colorado. Under the ASNT NDT Level II programme, employers carry responsibility for visual acuity, practical and job-specific examinations anyway.
That shifts the burden onto your training provider and your employer. A Denver programme that ends at the written examination leaves you two-thirds certified.

SNT-TC-1A counts in hours. The ASNT NDT Level II certification programme counts in days. They are not the same ledger and mixing them produces applications ASNT rejects. Delivery formats that fit a hundred-mile corridor
The Front Range employer base is strung from Fort Collins through Boulder, Broomfield, Westminster, Denver, Commerce City, Littleton and Louisville. Nobody commutes that corridor daily for a twelve-day radiography course. The formats that survive here are hybrid — theory delivered online and consumed on shift rotation, then a compressed in-person block for laboratory work and practical demonstration.

A Denver employer's written practice is the instrument that converts training hours into a valid certification. It names the standard, the methods in scope, the training and experience hours the employer will enforce, the examination structure, the vision requirements, the recertification interval and the Level III responsible for grading. If it is silent, vague or copied from a template that does not match how the company actually operates, every certificate issued under it is exposed the moment a client audits.

Does an ASNT NDT Level II certificate satisfy a Colorado aerospace employer?
