Guided Wave Testing (GWT) Services in Tampa 2026 — Atlantis NDT

Atlantis NDT delivers Guided Wave Testing (GWT) services in Tampa. ASNT NDT Level III-led. Technicians are certified by their employer to its SNT-TC-1A written practice, and procedures and reports are reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III (UT, RT, MT, PT, VT). Where we work: nationwide. Technicians are mobilised to your site anywhere in the USA; apart from the Houston office there is no local office, so mobilisation is planned and quoted for each job.

GWT Method Overview

Guided Wave Testing (GWT) is an advanced NDT technique. Atlantis NDT Level III approves the Procedure + signs off final disposition. Calibration block + reference standards traceable to NIST/NPL/PTB. Per ASME Section V applicable Article + ASTM E-series + ISO 17635/17636/17640. Atlantis NDT integrates GWT data into Digital Twin platform 3D defect overlay.

Code + Compliance in Tampa

GWT delivery aligns with: ASME B&PV V + VIII + IX; ASME B31 piping; API 510 + 570 + 571 + 579 + 580 + 581 + 653; ASTM E-series; ISO 17635/17636/17640; NACE MR0175/MR0103; AWS D1.1/3.6; IACS Rec-20. Records are kept in Atlantis NDT ERP.

How Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GWUT / LRUT) works

A collar of transducers around the pipe launches low-frequency guided waves that travel along the pipe wall for tens of metres in each direction. Reflections from changes in cross-section are interpreted to locate areas of metal loss, so long runs are screened from a single access point rather than examined metre by metre.

What it detects

  • Metal loss under insulation, under road and rail crossings, and in buried or sleeved sections without excavation
  • Corrosion at pipe supports and touchpoints that conventional UT cannot reach
  • Changes in cross-section over long inaccessible runs from a single collar position
  • Screening of a large length quickly to target where detailed UT or radiography should then be applied

What it will not do

Guided wave is a screening tool, not a sizing tool. It reports an estimated cross-sectional area change over a region, not a wall thickness at a point, and its range is heavily reduced by heavy coatings, bitumen wrap, tight bends, branch connections and product deposits. Every significant indication needs follow-up by conventional UT or radiography before any fitness-for-service decision.

When Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GWUT / LRUT) is the right choice

Choose guided wave where the problem is finding which part of a long, inaccessible run needs attention — insulated lines, sleeved crossings and pipe racks — and pair it with a sizing method for the areas it flags.

Codes and acceptance criteria

Examinations are performed to written procedures qualified against ASTM E2775 and ASTM E2929 for guided wave examination of piping, ISO 18211 for long-range testing, applied within the inspection planning frameworks of API 570 and API RP 583 for corrosion under insulation. Acceptance criteria come from the construction or in-service code governing the item — ASME Section VIII for pressure vessels, ASME B31.3 for process piping, API 510, API 570 and API 653 in service, AWS D1.1 for structural steel — and the applicable edition is recorded against the examination so the disposition can be reconstructed later.

Tampa context

Work in Tampa is scoped around the asset classes and access constraints of the local industrial base, the client's own vendor-approval regime, and the inspection intervals set by the governing in-service code. Mobilisation, permit and access planning are agreed before the crew travels, because on most sites those are the constraints that decide the cost of the campaign rather than the examination itself.

How the examination is controlled

Agree personnel qualification, equipment checks, procedure revision and review responsibilities for the examination. Retain those records with the results and coverage limitations.

What you receive

  • A report in your required format, with indications located against the component and, where relevant, against a persistent corrosion monitoring location so trends stay continuous between campaigns
  • Raw data files in the instrument-native format plus an open export, so the dataset outlives any single supplier relationship
  • The procedure revision, technician certification state and instrument calibration status applicable at the time of examination
  • Where a finding affects continued service, a clear statement of the code clause that governs the acceptance decision

NDT services in Tampa: what gets inspected around the bay, and where guided wave fits

The port drives most NDT work in Tampa. Its main assets are fuel terminals and transfer lines, ship repair yards, a repowered gas-fired power station and a phosphate fertilizer plant. Guided wave covers one part of that work: screening long runs of piping that cannot be reached along their length. Atlantis works from Houston and mobilizes crews job by job, with each procedure checked by an ASNT NDT Level III.

The asset base around the bay.

  • Fuel import terminals. According to Argus, nearly half of Florida's petroleum supply comes through Port Tampa Bay, mostly by water from the US Gulf Coast. Terminal operators on the bay include Citgo, Chevron, Buckeye, Global Partners and Kinder Morgan.
  • Pipelines inland and offshore. The Central Florida Pipeline collects product from five Port Tampa Bay area terminals and delivers it to Orlando. Its 85-mile, 10-inch line is the sole pipeline supply of jet fuel to Orlando International Airport. The Gulfstream natural gas pipeline crosses the Gulf and comes ashore at Port Manatee.
  • Ship repair. Tampa Ship at Hookers Point, Gulf Marine Repair on the Ybor Channel and Hendry Corporation at Port Hendry dock and repair tugs, barges and offshore vessels.
  • Power. Big Bend, Tampa Electric's gas-fired station at Apollo Beach, has run in combined cycle since 2023.
  • Fertilizer. Mosaic's Riverview plant produces about 18 percent of the phosphate fertilizer used in North America, and Mosaic also has bulk handling operations at Port Tampa Bay.

Where guided wave screening is used. Guided wave suits pipe that can be reached at one point but not along its length. Examples are product lines under roads and rail inside terminal fences, sleeved crossings, dock lines on pipe racks, and insulated runs. A transducer collar fitted at one spot tests a length of line in both directions. The result tells the owner which sections need detailed examination. In a humid coastal climate with salt in the air, corrosion under insulation and at pipe supports is the usual target. Results are poorer on lines with heavy wrap coatings, many bends or a lot of branch connections, so the survey plan should mark which runs are worth screening.

What follows the screening. Guided wave does not give a wall thickness. Every section it flags needs a sizing method before the owner decides on a repair:

Atlantis supplies these methods for piping programs run under API 570. The owner's API 570 inspector sets the intervals.

Storm season and restarts. Kinder Morgan shut its Tampa terminals and the Central Florida Pipeline ahead of Hurricane Milton in October 2024, only days after the pipeline had restarted following Helene. A restart after a storm surge is a good time to check the following, and to bring forward any screening that was already due:

  • exposed jetty and rack piping;
  • pipe supports;
  • insulation that took on seawater.

Next steps. NDT inspection services lists every method Atlantis offers. Corrosion under insulation inspection covers programs for insulated lines. For Tampa-specific scopes, see piping inspection in Tampa and pipeline inspection in Tampa. Describe the Tampa line or asset with the line list, insulation details and access, and the scope and quote are prepared from that.
