Can You Get NDT Certified Online?

Partly. You can complete NDT theory training and exam preparation online, but you cannot become fully NDT certified online. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the recommended practice most US employers follow, certification is issued by your employer. It requires documented classroom training, on-the-job experience hours, a vision test, and written general and specific exams plus a hands-on practical exam on real specimens, administered under the employer's written practice. An online course can cover the training hours and prepare you for the written exams. It cannot supply the experience or the practical.

Why "NDT certified online" is a misleading promise

Search for "NDT certification online" and you will find courses that promise a certificate at the end. Read the small print. What they issue is a certificate of training completion: evidence that you attended a number of classroom hours in a method. That is useful, and it counts toward certification, but it is not certification.

In the US, SNT-TC-1A puts certification in the hands of the employer. Each employer writes a written practice, a document that sets its own requirements within the framework of SNT-TC-1A, and certifies its own personnel against it. The employer's Level III (in-house or outsourced) administers the examinations, and the employer signs the certification. When you change employers, your new employer certifies you again under its own written practice, although it can take your training and experience records into account.

Nothing in that process can be completed by a website on its own. The experience hours are spent doing supervised NDT work. The practical exam is performed with real equipment on real specimens, observed and graded under the employer's programme. A course that tells you otherwise is either selling a training certificate under a bigger name, or selling a certification no serious employer will accept.

What you can do online, and what you cannot

Certification step under SNT-TC-1AOnline?Notes
Classroom (formal) training hoursYesLive online and self-paced theory are widely accepted if the employer's written practice allows them and the hours are documented.
Preparation for the general and specific written examsYesPractice questions, mock exams and code-reading drills work well online.
Practice with equipment behaviourPartlySimulation helps you practise technique and interpretation, but it does not replace hands-on time.
On-the-job experience hoursNoPerformed under supervision on real work and documented by the employer.
Vision (eye) examinationNoNear-vision acuity and colour contrast, done in person, typically every year.
Practical examinationNoPerformed on real specimens with real equipment, graded under the written practice.
CertificationNoIssued and signed by the employer.

The training-hour and experience figures behind each method and level are set out in our NDT training requirements matrix. Your employer's written practice may require more than the SNT-TC-1A minimums, never less.

What about ASNT's own certifications?

ASNT also runs central certification programmes, where ASNT, not your employer, issues the certificate. Even these are not fully online:

In every case the preparation can be online. The proctored exams, the experience and the practical cannot.

How long does it take?

The online part is the fast part. Level I and II theory for a surface method such as MT or PT can be finished in days. UT and RT theory takes longer, spread over a few weeks for someone who is also working. The experience hours set the real calendar. For UT and RT they are measured in months of supervised work, which is why employers, not individuals, usually drive certification. A trainee is hired, trained, gains experience on the job, and is examined and certified by the employer. Our guide to becoming an NDT technician walks through the sequence.

How Atlantis does it: online theory, onsite practical

Atlantis NDT is built around the honest version of online NDT training. It works because we split the process at exactly the line the table above draws.

  1. Live online theory. Level I and II theory for UT, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, taught live online by an ASNT Level III, with recorded replays. The hours are documented so they can be counted under your employer's written practice. See online NDT training.
  2. Practice on the Practical NDT simulator. Between sessions, trainees practise on Practical NDT, the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal: 12 methods in 5 virtual environments (an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank). It builds familiarity with setup, scanning and interpretation before trainees touch real equipment. It is practice. It does not replace the practical exam.
  3. Onsite practical training and examination at the employer's facility. The hands-on part is delivered where the work happens, on the employer's equipment and specimens, under an ASNT Level III, and the practical exam is administered and graded to the written practice. Atlantis has no public classroom, so the practical comes to you.
  4. Written exams and Level III administration. We prepare and grade general and specific exams to the employer's written practice, or support the employer's own Level III in doing so.
  5. Written practice support. If the employer does not yet have a compliant written practice, we can develop or review one, because without it there is nothing to certify against.

For technicians aiming higher, our Level III programme runs fully online, because the ASNT Level III exams are written. The method pages cover each exam: UT, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET.

A realistic route: from online theory to certified Level II

Here is how the process usually runs for a new UT technician hired by an inspection company that uses online theory. In the first weeks, the trainee completes Level I theory live online, practises calibration and scanning on the simulator, and starts supervised work alongside a certified Level II, logging experience from day one. The employer's Level III, in-house or outsourced, runs the Level I written exams and a practical on real calibration blocks and weld specimens, and the employer certifies the trainee as Level I. The technician then works as a Level I, performing examinations to procedures under Level II guidance, while completing Level II theory online in evenings or between jobs. Once the Level II experience total in the written practice is reached, the Level II general, specific and practical exams follow, and the employer certifies the technician as Level II.

Online delivery shortened the classroom part and removed the travel. It did not shorten the experience, and it did not move the practical off the shop floor. Any plan that promises otherwise should make you cautious.

Our article on online versus in-person NDT training goes further into the trade-offs, and what an NDT school can and cannot do covers the institutional side.

If you are an employer

Online theory changes the economics of certifying a crew. Technicians keep working while they complete the classroom hours from a site office, and the practical is run onsite in a concentrated block on your own equipment. Your written practice needs to allow online formal training and describe how the hours are recorded. We can check that for you. Online NDT certification: frequently asked questions

Can you get NDT certified completely online?

No. Theory training and exam preparation can be online, but SNT-TC-1A certification requires on-the-job experience, a vision test and a practical exam on real specimens, and it is issued by your employer.

Is online NDT training accepted by employers?

Generally yes, as formal training hours, provided the employer's written practice allows it and the hours are documented per method and level. Check with the employer before you enrol.

What is the difference between a training certificate and NDT certification?

A training certificate proves you completed classroom hours. Certification is the employer's written confirmation, under its written practice, that you met the training, experience, vision and examination requirements for a method and level.

Can I take the practical exam online?

No. The practical is performed with real equipment on real specimens. Simulators such as Practical NDT help you practise, but they are not a practical exam.

Can I get certified without an employer?

Under SNT-TC-1A, certification is issued by an employer. ASNT's central certifications (ASNT NDT Level II and Level III) are issued by ASNT, but the Level II still relies on the employer for the practical and vision exams, and all of them require documented experience.

Which NDT methods can be studied online?

Theory for all common methods (UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET and advanced UT such as PAUT and TOFD) can be studied online. Radiography also needs radiation safety training and whatever licensing the state or NRC requires.

Can Level III be done online?

The preparation can be done entirely online, because the ASNT Level III Basic and method exams are written, computer-based exams taken at a test centre.

Is free online NDT certification real?

Free courses can teach useful theory, but no free website can certify you. Certification needs experience, a practical exam and an employer or ASNT behind it.

How does Atlantis handle the practical part?

We deliver hands-on training and administer the practical exam onsite at the employer's facility under an ASNT Level III, after trainees complete live online theory and simulator practice.
