SNT-TC-1A certification path in Providence, step by step

SNT-TC-1A is an employer-based scheme. Nobody is certified by a training provider, by a college or by the state. The employer certifies its own people under its own written practice. Here is the sequence a Providence technician actually goes through:

1. The employer's written practice. Your employer documents how it trains, examines and certifies NDT personnel, method by method and level by level. If the company does not have one yet, start with written-practice development.
2. Formal training hours. Classroom or live-online instruction in the method, at the hours the written practice sets. Atlantis delivers this part, online or onsite. Minimums by method are listed in the requirements matrix.
3. On-the-job experience. Supervised experience in the method, logged and signed. This happens at your employer, on your employer's work.
4. General, specific and practical examinations. Given by a Level III (or a designated examiner) under the written practice. The practical exam is done on real specimens with real equipment. It cannot be done in a simulator or remotely.
5. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast, checked at least annually as the written practice requires.
6. Certification by the employer. The certifying signature belongs to the employer, supported by the Level III's records.
7. Recertification. At the interval in the written practice, with evidence of continuing satisfactory work or re-examination.

A technician who moves from one Rhode Island employer to another usually keeps the training and experience records, but the new employer must certify them again under its own written practice. Radiation licensing and TWIC in Rhode Island

Rhode Island is an NRC Agreement State. Radioactive-material licences for industrial radiography are issued and inspected by the Radiation Control Program at the Rhode Island Department of Health, under the state's industrial radiography rules (216-RICR-40-20-10). A company running gamma sources in Rhode Island needs that licence, and its radiographers must meet the training, certification and personnel-monitoring requirements in those rules. Radiographers working with sources normally need certification from a recognised independent radiographer certification programme, alongside their employer's SNT-TC-1A certification for RT. The two are separate: SNT-TC-1A covers your ability to perform and interpret radiography, and the state rules cover radiation safety. Our RT courses teach the method. For port and terminal work, many facilities on the Providence River and at Quonset are regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act. Unescorted access to secure areas requires a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) from the TSA. Defence sites have their own access and security screening, separate from both TWIC and NDT certification. Plan these early, because a certified technician who cannot get through the gate cannot do the job.

Local options compared: NDT training around Providence

People searching for NDT training in Providence often want a list of options. Here is an honest one, as we understand the market at the time of writing. Programmes change, so check with each provider directly.

• College programmes. We could not confirm a dedicated associate-degree NDT programme at a Rhode Island college. The nearest New England college programme, at Great Bay Community College in New Hampshire, stopped accepting new students in 2023. The ASNT educational directory lists schools nationwide, and some Rhode Island residents relocate for a full-time college programme. That suits people who want a two-year degree before their first job.
• Testing labs and service companies. Local engineering and testing firms, including companies in Cranston that appear in ASNT's educational directory, train their own staff and sometimes run courses. This is a good route if you want to be hired and trained by the same company.

Practise before the practical exam

Hands-on time is the hardest thing to schedule for a small crew. Do I need a licence for radiography in Rhode Island?

The company needs a radioactive-material licence from the Rhode Island Department of Health's Radiation Control Program to use gamma sources for industrial radiography. Atlantis does not claim either approval. If you need those funds, check the VA's WEAMS search and Rhode Island's eligible training provider list first. Many technicians instead have the employer pay for training, which is the most common route for SNT-TC-1A certification anyway.

Can you train our crew at our Rhode Island plant or shop?
