NDT Training and Certification in Oregon
Oregon technicians and employers get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III NDT training from Atlantis NDT through live online classes, live-virtual cohorts, or onsite courses at their own foundry, shipyard, mill, dam or plant. An ASNT NDT Level III leads every programme and builds it around the employer's written practice, so training counts toward certification. Methods: UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation.
Oregon's NDT economy is unusual. It has no oil refineries and no operating nuclear power plant, yet it is home to some of the most inspection-intensive metal manufacturing in the country. Portland's investment-casting and forging plants supply jet-engine and airframe parts worldwide, specialty-metals producers in the Willamette Valley make titanium, zirconium and nickel alloys, and heavy-truck, railcar, barge and ship work fills the Portland harbour. Federal dams on the Columbia, fuel terminals along the Willamette, gas transmission pipelines and hundreds of bridges add field work. Oregon also runs its own industrial radiographer rules. This page is organised around that map. If you already know what you need, request an Oregon training quote and we will reply within one business day.
Where NDT technicians work in Oregon
Oregon NDT work clusters in four areas: metals, aerospace castings, trucks and marine fabrication in the Portland metro; specialty metals and manufacturing in the Willamette Valley from Salem to Eugene; hydropower, pipelines and energy infrastructure along the Columbia River and in eastern Oregon; and aviation, ports and wood-products industry in southern Oregon and on the coast. Each favours different methods and specifications.
Portland metro: castings, trucks, ships and steel
Precision Castparts, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, has its roots and major investment-casting operations in Portland, producing large structural castings and engine components for the aerospace industry. Castings like these are among the most heavily inspected parts in manufacturing: RT for internal soundness, fluorescent PT for surface flaws, and UT and VT throughout, all under aerospace customer specifications. On Swan Island, Vigor operates a large shipyard and drydock complex that repairs and builds vessels for commercial operators, ferries and government customers, while Gunderson, part of Greenbrier, builds railcars and marine barges on the Willamette. Daimler Truck North America is headquartered in Portland and builds trucks there, and the city has a steel plate mill and metal recyclers in its industrial districts. Boeing operates a parts plant in Gresham. Methods in demand: RT, PT, UT, MT and VT on castings, forgings and welds, VT and MT on hull and railcar welds, and UT and PAUT on thick plate.
The Northwest Portland fuel hub and the harbour
Along the Willamette in Northwest Portland, a strip of fuel terminals and tank farms known as the Critical Energy Infrastructure Hub receives and stores most of the petroleum products used in Oregon, delivered by pipeline, barge, ship and rail. Because the hub sits on soils vulnerable to earthquake liquefaction, tank and piping integrity has had close attention from the state and the city. That means UT thickness surveys on tank shells, floors and piping, VT and MT on welds, and RT on pressure piping. The Port of Portland's marine terminals and Portland International Airport, which hosts the Oregon Air National Guard's fighter wing, add structural and aircraft work.
Willamette Valley: Albany, Salem and Eugene
Albany and nearby Millersburg are a centre of specialty metals, with ATI's operations producing titanium, zirconium, hafnium and nickel-based alloys for aerospace, nuclear, chemical and medical markets. Bar, plate and mill products from these plants need UT, ET and PT, and process equipment such as reactors and vessels needs UT and VT. Salem's manufacturers and Eugene and Springfield's wood-products mills, manufactured-housing and recreational-vehicle plants, and machinery makers add MT, PT, UT and VT on welded fabrications and boilers. Pulp, paper and lumber mills across the valley run boilers, digesters and pressure vessels that are inspected during annual shutdowns.
Columbia River: dams, power and pipelines
The US Army Corps of Engineers operates Bonneville, The Dalles, John Day and McNary dams on the Columbia, and the Bonneville Power Administration, headquartered in Portland, markets the federal hydropower and runs much of the region's transmission system. Turbines, penstocks, gates, cranes and structural steel at hydro plants need UT, MT and VT, with PT and ET on components. Interstate natural gas transmission pipelines cross Oregon from Canada and the Rocky Mountains, with compressor stations in eastern and central Oregon, and gas-fired plants at sites such as Hermiston and Boardman need outage inspection. The Interstate 5 bridge replacement project between Portland and Vancouver, Washington, and the Oregon Department of Transportation's large inventory of steel and concrete bridges add structural NDT work.
Southern Oregon and the coast
Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls trains Air National Guard fighter pilots and maintains their aircraft, which brings ET, UT and PT on aircraft structure. Medford and Grants Pass have wood-products, manufacturing and aviation businesses, and the Port of Coos Bay, the state's largest deep-draft coastal port, handles forest products and has marine and rail infrastructure. Coastal and southern Oregon employers are spread thin, which makes online theory especially useful.
ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Oregon employers
Atlantis NDT runs ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based courses in eight methods at Level I and Level II, plus Level III preparation. Oregon employers most often need RT, PT, UT and VT for aerospace castings and specialty metals, VT, MT and UT for shipyard, railcar and truck fabrication, and UT thickness, MT and VT for terminals, dams and mills.
| Method | Levels | What Oregon employers use it for | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) | I, II, III prep | Specialty-metal bar and plate in Albany, castings and forgings in Portland, tank and piping thickness at the fuel hub, dam and bridge steel | None for Level I; Level I training and experience for Level II, per written practice |
| Phased Array UT (PAUT) | I, II | Thick plate and heavy welds at shipyards and fabricators, castings, hydro components | Usually UT Level II first, per written practice |
| Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) | I, II | Heavy-wall vessel and piping welds, flaw sizing at mills and power plants | Usually UT Level II first |
| Radiographic Testing (RT) | I, II | Aerospace investment castings in Portland, pipeline and pressure-piping welds | Radiation safety training and Oregon industrial radiographer requirements in addition to method training |
| Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) | I, II | Truck and railcar components, hull and barge welds, structural steel, forgings | None for Level I |
| Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) | I, II | Fluorescent PT on aerospace castings, titanium and nickel alloys, stainless and non-magnetic welds | None for Level I |
| Visual Testing (VT) | I, II | Every fabrication shop, shipyard and railcar plant, castings, bridges, dams and boilers | None for Level I |
| Eddy Current Testing (ET) | I, II | Specialty-metal tubing and bar, aircraft structure at Kingsley Field and Portland, heat-exchanger tubing | None for Level I; electrical fundamentals help |
Candidates aiming for Level III can take our ASNT Level III training, covering the Basic exam, method exams and how a Level III applies the written practice. Deeper method courses include UT Level 2 training and the PAUT Level 2 course. Hours and experience by method and level are on the training requirements matrix; your employer's written practice sets the final figures, so we do not quote hours here.

Portland. The centre of Oregon NDT. Casting and forging plants need large numbers of RT, PT and UT technicians who can work to aerospace specifications, and Swan Island and the Willamette industrial waterfront need VT, MT and UT on ship, barge and railcar welds. Portland employers often run onsite cohorts on their own parts, with theory delivered live online between shifts.
Albany and Millersburg. Specialty metals bring UT, ET and PT on bar, plate, tube and mill products, with customer specifications from aerospace, chemical and nuclear buyers. Accuracy of acceptance criteria and documentation is everything here.
Eugene and Springfield. Fabrication of RVs, manufactured homes, machinery and mill equipment needs VT, MT and UT on welds, and mill boilers need UT thickness and VT during shutdowns. Many employers here have small NDT teams and benefit from an outside Level III.
Columbia Gorge and eastern Oregon. Hydro, gas-fired power and pipeline compressor stations need UT, MT, VT and PT during outages, and remote locations make live online theory the practical choice.
Klamath Falls, Medford and Coos Bay. Aircraft maintenance, wood-products plants and port infrastructure each need a small number of qualified technicians, and online theory with onsite practicals avoids long drives to Portland.
Neighbouring hubs: NDT training across the Pacific Northwest, Seattle for Puget Sound employers with Oregon sites, Practical NDT for Washington State, and Idaho for crews working across the eastern border.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in Oregon, step by step
Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you, not the State of Oregon and not a training school. You complete method training, log documented on-the-job experience, pass general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III, pass a vision test, and your employer certifies you to its written practice. Radiographers also need Oregon's radiation safety qualification.
- Employer written practice. Your employer needs a written practice that defines levels, training, experience, exams and recertification, and in aerospace casting and specialty-metals plants it must also satisfy customer audits. If one does not exist, we can write it.
- Formal classroom training. You complete the method training the written practice requires, online, live-virtual or onsite. The training requirements matrix shows SNT-TC-1A recommended minimums.
- On-the-job experience. You log supervised experience on real work, whether castings in Portland, bar and plate in Albany or hull welds on Swan Island. Records are signed and kept.
- General exam. A written test on method principles.
- Specific exam. A written test on the specifications, procedures and equipment your employer uses, such as an aerospace customer's casting specification, AWS D1.1 or ASME Section V.
- Practical exam. Hands-on inspection of specimens with known discontinuities, graded by a Level III.
- Vision test. Near-vision acuity and colour-contrast checks, annually.
- Certification. Issued by your employer and valid for that employer. A new employer re-certifies you under its own written practice, though your documented training and experience carry forward.
- Recertification. At the interval your written practice sets, by evidence of continued satisfactory work or re-examination.

Radiography licensing and other Oregon requirements
Oregon is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography is regulated by Radiation Protection Services in the Oregon Health Authority's Public Health Division, under Oregon Administrative Rules chapter 333, with Division 105 covering industrial radiographic operations. Radiographers must complete specified radiation safety training, supervised hands-on experience and certification through a radiographer certification programme, separately from SNT-TC-1A method certification.
The Oregon rules set out the subjects radiographers must be trained in and a defined period of supervised on-the-job radiography experience, with separate segments for work with radioactive sources and with radiation machines, and they require radiographers to be certified through a recognised radiographer certification programme and instructed in the licensee's operating procedures. The employing company needs a radioactive materials licence or X-ray device registration from Radiation Protection Services, and out-of-state companies working in Oregon must follow the reciprocity rules. Our RT Level I and II courses cover the method side: exposure technique, image quality and film or digital interpretation. Check the current OAR 333 Division 105 requirements with the Oregon Health Authority before a crew starts field work, and check federal site requirements before working at a federal dam or military installation.
Boilers and pressure vessels. The Building Codes Division of the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services runs the boiler and pressure vessel programme. It adopts and interprets the Oregon Boiler and Pressure Vessel Specialty Code, whose current edition took effect on 1 October 2024, and provides permits and inspections for installation, alteration, repair and operation of boilers and pressure vessels. Repair work generally follows the National Board Inspection Code, with NDT drawn from ASME Section V and the construction code.
Pipelines. The Oregon Public Utility Commission's pipeline safety programme is certified by the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to inspect and enforce federal pipeline safety code for gas operators in the state; PHMSA itself oversees interstate lines. Pipeline weld inspection commonly follows API 1104.
Codes you will meet in Oregon. As local context only: aerospace customer casting and forging specifications, NAS 410 and ASTM practices for RT, PT, UT and ET in Portland's casting plants and Albany's mills, AWS D1.1 for structural steel and AWS D1.5 for bridges, ASME Section V and VIII for pressure vessels, ASME B31.1 and B31.3 for power and process piping, API 1104 for pipelines, Association of American Railroads requirements for railcar work, and US Coast Guard and classification-society rules at shipyards. Some employers also ask for AWS CWI or API inspector credentials; those are separate schemes that Atlantis does not train for. Our training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based.
Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Oregon
Oregon crews can take theory live online, join a live-virtual cohort, or have an Atlantis Level III-led programme delivered onsite at their facility. Practical training and practical exams use real specimens, at the employer's site or through a partner arrangement agreed beforehand.
Distance is the main reason Oregon employers choose online theory. Klamath Falls, Coos Bay and Hermiston are each several hours from Portland, and a technician in eastern Oregon loses most of a week driving to a classroom. Live online sessions are interactive, with the instructor present, and cover the general and specific knowledge the written exams test. See NDT training online for details.
Onsite delivery suits foundries, mills, yards and plants that want a group trained on their own parts and procedures. We schedule around Oregon's real calendar: annual mill shutdowns in the Willamette Valley, spring and fall outages at gas-fired plants, hydro maintenance that the Columbia's high spring flows usually push into lower-flow months, shipyard availabilities on Swan Island, and production ramps at casting plants. Winter rain and snow in the Cascades can affect field practicals, so we plan around them.
Practical skill is built on hardware. Practical sessions use real specimens, your production parts where appropriate, and the instruments your team uses. For employers with sites in Oregon and Washington or further afield, our corporate NDT training programme keeps training records consistent. Ask about onsite training for your Oregon crew.
For Oregon employers: written practice and Level III services
Every Oregon company certifying NDT personnel under SNT-TC-1A needs a written practice and a Level III. Atlantis NDT writes and updates written practices, administers and grades exams, reviews procedures and acts as an outside Level III for companies that do not have one in-house.
Common Oregon triggers are a customer audit or a new contract. A machine shop in Tualatin approved as a supplier for aerospace parts, a Eugene fabricator taking on pressure-vessel work, a Portland railcar or barge builder adding UT, or a mill whose long-serving Level III has retired cannot certify anyone until the written practice and Level III oversight are in place. Our written practice development service builds a document that fits your methods, specifications and audits, and our SNT-TC-1A guidance explains what auditors look for.
Level III support includes procedure and technique writing, exam administration and grading, review of training and experience files, and preparation for customer and registrar audits. For broader programme work, see our NDT consulting services. Book a Level III consultation for your Oregon company.
Practise before your practical exam
Practical NDT is Atlantis NDT's 3D simulator. Trainees practise 12 inspection methods in 5 environments: an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It builds familiarity and confidence but is practice only; it does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.
For Oregon trainees, the NDT lab mirrors the inspection rooms of Portland casting plants and Albany mills, the welding workshop matches shipyard, barge and railcar fabrication on the Willamette, the aircraft hangar reflects maintenance at Kingsley Field and Portland's air base, and the storage tank scene matches the Northwest Portland fuel terminals. Trainees can rehearse set-ups and scan patterns between classes and arrive at the practical exam knowing what to expect.
Simulator time does not count as on-the-job experience and is not a practical exam. See the Practical NDT simulator overview, or the city pages for Portland and Eugene.
Your instructor
Courses are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. As Level III he oversees course content, written practices, exams and practical assessment criteria, so the training an Oregon technician receives is tied to how that technician will be examined and certified. Questions about methods, written practices or an Oregon requirement can go to him through the contact form.
NDT training in Oregon: frequently asked questions
How do I become NDT certified in Oregon?
Most Oregon NDT technicians are certified by their employer under ASNT SNT-TC-1A: method training, documented on-the-job experience, general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III, and a vision test. Radiographers also need state radiation safety training and radiographer certification under Oregon's rules.
Is there NDT training online in Oregon?
Yes. Atlantis NDT runs live online theory classes that technicians can join from Portland, Salem, Eugene, Albany, Klamath Falls, Hermiston or anywhere else in the state. Practical training and the practical exam still need real specimens, arranged onsite at your employer or through an agreed partner.
Do I need a license to do radiography in Oregon?
Yes. The company needs a licence or registration from the Oregon Health Authority's Radiation Protection Services, and individual radiographers must complete the training, supervised experience and certification required by OAR 333 Division 105. This is in addition to SNT-TC-1A RT method certification. Confirm current rules with the state.
How much does NDT training cost in Oregon?
Quote on request. It depends on the method, level, number of trainees, online or onsite delivery, and whether you also need a written practice or exam administration. Send your crew size and methods and we will reply with a cohort or onsite quote within one business day.
Which NDT methods are most in demand in Oregon?
RT, PT, UT and VT are in constant demand at Portland's aerospace casting plants and the specialty-metals mills, while VT, MT and UT dominate in shipyards, railcar and truck plants and fabrication shops. UT thickness and MT are common in terminal, mill and hydro work.
Can you train our crew onsite in Portland or Albany?
Yes. Onsite delivery is available at your facility anywhere in Oregon, scheduled around production, shutdowns and outages. Atlantis NDT has no physical training centre in the state; onsite means at your site.
Is SNT-TC-1A recognised by Oregon employers?
Yes. SNT-TC-1A is the most widely used employer-based certification framework in US industry and is referenced by ASME, AWS and many customer specifications. Aerospace buyers sometimes require NAS 410 qualification as well, which your written practice and customer contract should address.
Are there NDT jobs in Oregon without a refinery or nuclear plant?
Yes. Oregon's NDT demand comes mostly from manufacturing rather than refining: aerospace castings and forgings, specialty metals, shipyards, railcars, trucks and fabrication, with field work at fuel terminals, dams, pipelines, mills and bridges.
How long does UT Level II take?
It depends on your employer's written practice, which sets classroom training and experience for each level. SNT-TC-1A recommended minimums are on our training requirements matrix. Experience usually takes longer than classroom time.
Can I prepare for the ASNT Level III exams from Oregon?
Yes. Our ASNT Level III training runs live online and covers the Basic and method exams. Level II candidates can also use the UT Level 2 practice questions.
Does my certification transfer to another Oregon employer?
Not automatically. SNT-TC-1A certification belongs to the issuing employer. A new employer reviews your records and re-certifies you under its own written practice, which may require new specific and practical exams.
What do NDT technicians earn in Oregon?
Earnings vary by method, level, sector, shift and travel. For published ranges, see the NDT Level 2 salary and NDT Level 3 salary guides.
