NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Washington

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Washington State is one of the places where that kind of practice makes the most sense. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like environment that you open in a browser or app. Inside it you pick up a virtual probe, yoke, spray can or eddy current pencil and work real inspection jobs on realistic assets: weld coupons, pipe spools, pressure vessel shells, airframe panels, heat-exchanger tubes and a full-size storage tank. Every job is scored the moment you finish, so you learn what you missed while the scan is still fresh in your head. Washington's inspection economy is unusually varied. Within a few hours' drive you move from commercial aircraft assembly around Everett and Renton, to naval ship maintenance at Bremerton, to five crude oil refineries on the northern Puget Sound and Tacoma tideflats, to the hydropower dams of the Columbia River, to nuclear construction and cleanup at Hanford. Each of those sectors asks for different methods, different acceptance criteria and different habits. A technician who spent last quarter doing eddy current on fastener holes may be sent to a turnaround next month to shoot thickness readings on a crude unit. Practical NDT lets that person rehearse the next job, not just remember the last one, and it lets a trainee in Spokane or the Tri-Cities build scanning habits long before they get near a live plant.

Washington's NDT workforce and where the work is

Washington's inspection work clusters in four broad sub-regions, and it helps to picture them separately because the job mix changes sharply as you cross the Cascades.

Central Puget Sound (Seattle, Everett, Renton, Auburn, Kent). This is the heart of the state's aerospace industry. Wide-body and single-aisle commercial aircraft are assembled here, and hundreds of suppliers in the Kent Valley, Auburn and Snohomish County machine, form, bond and fasten structural parts. That means a steady demand for eddy current on fastener holes and edges, ultrasonic inspection of composite laminates and bonded structures, penetrant on machined aluminium and titanium parts, and radiography of castings. The same corridor holds the Duwamish Waterway and Harbor Island ship repair yards, the Port of Seattle's container and cruise terminals, and a good deal of structural steel fabrication for bridges, towers and buildings, where visual and ultrasonic weld inspection to AWS D1.1 is daily work.

Northern Puget Sound (Whatcom and Skagit counties). Four of Washington's five crude oil refineries sit here: the Cherry Point refinery near Blaine, the Ferndale refinery, and two refineries on March Point outside Anacortes. The Olympic Pipeline carries refined products south from these plants toward Seattle, Tacoma and Portland. Refinery inspection means API 510 pressure vessel work, API 570 piping circuits, API 653 tank inspections, corrosion mapping, high-temperature hydrogen attack screening, and massive turnaround pushes when dozens of contract technicians arrive at once.

South Sound and Kitsap (Tacoma, Bremerton, Olympia). The Tacoma tideflats host the state's fifth refinery, bulk liquid terminals, the Port of Tacoma and heavy industry. Across the water, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton maintains and overhauls aircraft carriers and submarines, one of the largest industrial employers in the state and a major consumer of weld inspection, radiography and ultrasonic testing. Joint Base Lewis-McChord south of Tacoma adds military aviation and vehicle maintenance.

Eastern Washington (Spokane, Tri-Cities, Columbia Basin). East of the mountains the work shifts toward hydropower, nuclear and heavy manufacturing. Grand Coulee and the other Columbia and Snake River dams depend on penstock, turbine and gate inspections. The Hanford Site near Richland is the focus of one of the largest environmental cleanup programmes in the country, including the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, while the Columbia Generating Station is the state's only commercial nuclear power plant. Spokane contributes aerospace component manufacturing, aluminium rolling in Spokane Valley and military aviation at Fairchild Air Force Base.

Practical NDT by city in Washington

Atlantis has dedicated Practical NDT pages for Washington's main inspection centres. The table below summarises the local sectors and the simulator environments and methods that fit them best; each city page goes deeper.

CityMain local sectorsEnvironments & methods to practise
SeattleAerospace assembly and supply chain, ship repair, port terminals, structural fabricationAircraft Hangar (ET, UT, PT); Welding Workshop (VT, UT, PAUT); NDT Lab fundamentals
TacomaRefining and bulk liquid terminals on the tideflats, port, naval shipyard across the Sound, military baseOil & Gas Site (UT thickness, PMI, IRIS); Storage Tank (shell UT, MFL floor); Welding Workshop (RT, PAUT)
SpokaneAerospace components, aluminium rolling, military aviation, regional power and mining supplyAircraft Hangar (ET, UT); NDT Lab (MT, PT on machined parts); Welding Workshop (VT)
Richland (Tri-Cities)Nuclear cleanup and construction at Hanford, commercial nuclear power, national laboratory research, food processingWelding Workshop (RT, UT, PAUT, TOFD); Oil & Gas Site (pipe and vessel UT, PMI); NDT Lab (reference blocks)

Seattle. Seattle's inspectors often split their careers between aerospace and everything else. On the aerospace side, eddy current around fastener holes, bond-line ultrasonic checks and penetrant on machined parts dominate, usually under NAS 410 style employer qualification. On the marine and structural side, the Duwamish shipyards and downtown construction keep weld VT and UT busy. The Aircraft Hangar environment is the obvious daily drill, but Seattle technicians who pick up shipyard contracts get as much value from Welding Workshop PAUT and TOFD scenarios.

Tacoma. The Tacoma tideflats combine a refinery, tank farms and marine terminals with the Port of Tacoma's heavy cargo operations, and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard is a short ferry ride away. That mix points straight at the Storage Tank environment for shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening, and the Oil & Gas Site for corrosion under insulation, small-bore piping and PMI on alloy components. Tacoma is also a natural base for contract crews rotating north to the Anacortes and Ferndale turnarounds.

Spokane. Spokane's inspection market is smaller but steady: aerospace component suppliers, aluminium rolling and fabrication, aircraft maintenance at Fairchild Air Force Base and heavy-equipment support for the Inland Northwest's mining and agricultural economy. Technicians here often work alone or in small teams far from a training lab, which is precisely where an always-available simulator helps. Aircraft Hangar ET and NDT Lab MT and PT work map directly to local jobs.

Richland (Tri-Cities). The Tri-Cities inspection economy revolves around Hanford cleanup and construction and the Columbia Generating Station. Nuclear-quality welding and inspection means radiography and ultrasonic work with tight documentation, often under ASME Section III and XI and NQA-1 quality programmes. Welding Workshop RT interpretation, PAUT and TOFD scenarios let technicians rehearse weld volumetric inspection before stepping onto a controlled site where mistakes are expensive and access time is short.

Environments and methods that match Washington work

Practical NDT includes five workplace environments and twelve methods. Here is how they line up with Washington's industries.

Aircraft Hangar. Built around airframe and component inspection, with 54 jobs. For Puget Sound and Spokane aerospace technicians, the key methods are eddy current (ET) for surface and near-surface cracks around fasteners and radii, contact ultrasonic testing on structural parts, and penetrant (PT) and visual (VT) on machined components. Practising probe handling, lift-off control and signal discrimination between real indications and geometry is exactly the kind of skill that fades when you move to a different programme for a few months.

Oil & Gas Site. 73 jobs in a process plant setting: weld inspection, corrosion assessment, tube inspection and screening. For refinery technicians in Whatcom, Skagit and Pierce counties, this is where IRIS internal rotary ultrasonic inspection of heat-exchanger tubes, PMI alloy verification, UT thickness surveys and LRUT guided-wave screening of pipe runs come together. Turnaround crews can rehearse the sequence of a typical inspection package before the unit is handed over.

Storage Tank. A full-size tank for UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening. Washington's refineries, the Tacoma and Seattle terminals and the fuel storage along the Olympic Pipeline system all rely on API 653 tank inspection, and the MFL floor scan is a skill few trainees get to try on real steel before they are expected to perform it.

Welding Workshop. 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints. For shipyard, structural and nuclear construction work, this environment covers visual weld inspection, radiography (RT) interpretation, contact UT, phased array (PAUT) and TOFD. It is the closest thing to a portable weld-inspection lab, and it is where Bremerton, Seattle and Tri-Cities technicians will spend most of their time.

NDT Lab. 52 jobs on bench specimens and reference blocks. Every method begins here: calibration, reference standards, magnetic particle (MT) technique and field direction, penetrant dwell and developer practice, and ultrasonic distance-amplitude setups. For new entrants from Washington's community and technical college welding and manufacturing programmes, the NDT Lab and the 33 guided lessons are the natural starting point.

Regulators and requirements Washington technicians meet

Washington is an NRC Agreement State, which means the state rather than the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses and inspects most users of radioactive materials, including industrial radiography with gamma sources. The Washington State Department of Health, Office of Radiation Protection, handles radioactive materials licensing and inspection and x-ray machine registration. Industrial radiography in the state follows Washington Administrative Code chapter 246-243 alongside the general radiation protection chapters, and radiographers and radiographer's assistants must meet the training, certification and supervision requirements that the rule sets out. If you are planning radiography work, confirm the current requirements directly with the Office of Radiation Protection rather than relying on any training provider's summary, including ours.

Boilers and unfired pressure vessels are regulated by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries Boiler Program under RCW 70.79 and WAC 296-104, which ties construction and repair to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and the National Board Inspection Code. Intrastate pipeline safety falls to the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission's pipeline safety programme, with PHMSA covering interstate lines. Nuclear work at the Columbia Generating Station and federal work at Hanford sit under NRC and Department of Energy oversight respectively.

Day to day, the codes that set acceptance criteria for Washington inspectors include ASME Section V for NDT methods, Sections VIII and I for pressure equipment, ASME B31.3 for process piping, API 510, 570 and 653 for in-service refinery equipment, AWS D1.1 for structural steel and AWS D17.1 for aerospace fusion welding. Aerospace employers commonly qualify NDT personnel to NAS 410, and naval shipyard work follows NAVSEA technical publications; we mention these only as context for what Washington employers may require. Atlantis's own training framing is ASNT SNT-TC-1A, and Practical NDT is practice that supports any scheme rather than a qualification under any of them.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Washington

New trainees. If you are coming out of a welding programme, the military or a manufacturing job and want to move into inspection, Practical NDT gives you guided fundamentals before you ever touch a real flaw detector. The 33 guided lessons walk through each method's principles and setup, and the NDT Lab environment lets you repeat calibration and basic scans until they become automatic. You will arrive at your formal classroom training and first on-the-job hours already knowing what a clean back-wall echo and a real indication look like.

Working technicians. Washington technicians often move between very different programmes: a composite UT job in Everett, a refinery turnaround in Anacortes, a shipyard weld package in Bremerton. Practical NDT's rare-defect refreshers help you stay sharp between assignments, rehearse the method you are about to use again and drill defect types you may see only once or twice a year, such as lack of sidewall fusion in a thick weld or a subtle crack at a fastener hole. Instant scoring shows you exactly where your technique slipped.

Level IIIs and team leads. For Level IIIs, Practical NDT is a benchmarking and coverage tool. You can build and assign scenario sets that match your written practice and your clients' procedures, see how each technician on your crew performs against the same scenario, and spot gaps before they appear on a client's site. For companies that staff Washington's turnarounds with a mix of local and travelling technicians, an objective common baseline is hard to get any other way.

Practice vs certification

Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not grant any level of qualification, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer's written practice require before you can be certified. Under SNT-TC-1A, your employer's Level III remains responsible for your training hours, experience, written and practical examinations and certification, and nothing in a simulator changes that. The same is true of radiographer certification required by Washington's radiation rules, and of any aerospace or naval qualification your employer may impose.

What Practical NDT does is make the hours around that formal process more productive. Trainees arrive at practical exams with far more repetitions behind them. Technicians returning to a method after months away can warm up without booking lab time or using calibration blocks. Level IIIs can see where their people need more real-specimen practice and focus scarce hands-on time where it matters. Atlantis delivers formal NDT training separately through its NDT training and certification programmes; Practical NDT is designed to sit alongside that training and alongside your employer's own programme, never in place of it.

Bring Practical NDT to your Washington team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience so that inspection teams anywhere could keep their skills sharp without waiting for a lab slot. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training. For a Washington team, a typical rollout starts with a short demo, then a pilot group of trainees and working technicians on the environments that match your work: Aircraft Hangar for aerospace, Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank for refineries and terminals, Welding Workshop for shipyards and nuclear construction. Your Level III can then set up scenario sets that reflect your procedures and track progress across the crew.

Pricing is quote on request and shaped around your team size and needs; Practical NDT is designed to be affordable, accessible and fully customizable. Request a Practical NDT demo for your Washington team, or ask for a quote for a pilot group. You can also reach us at info@atlantisndt.com.

Frequently asked questions

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam in Washington?

No. Practical NDT is practice and readiness training only. ASNT SNT-TC-1A certification still requires a practical examination on real specimens under your employer's written practice, and radiographers must also meet Washington's radiation protection requirements. The simulator helps you prepare for those steps; it does not substitute for any of them.

Which environments suit Washington aerospace technicians?

The Aircraft Hangar environment is built for airframe and component inspection and is the best fit, especially for eddy current and ultrasonic work. Many aerospace technicians also use the NDT Lab for penetrant and calibration practice.

Is there anything for refinery and terminal inspectors in Anacortes, Ferndale and Tacoma?

Yes. The Oil & Gas Site environment covers weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant, including IRIS, PMI and LRUT, and the Storage Tank environment covers shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening. Both line up with the API 510, 570 and 653 work common across the state's refineries.

Can a Level III build scenarios that match our procedures?

Yes. Level IIIs and team leads can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps. Ask for a demo and we will show you how scenario sets are assembled.

Do I need special hardware?

No. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app, so technicians can practise on the equipment they already have, whether they are in Seattle, at a Tri-Cities site office or at home in Spokane.

Is Practical NDT useful for nuclear and shipyard weld inspection?

It is well suited to rehearsing weld volumetric methods. The Welding Workshop covers RT interpretation, contact UT, PAUT and TOFD on weld coupons and fabrication joints. It does not replace site-specific qualifications required by nuclear or naval programmes, but it helps technicians arrive better prepared.
