NDT Training and Certification in Quebec
Short answer: Quebec employers and technicians can take ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT training from Atlantis NDT in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET at Level I and II, plus Level III exam preparation. You can join live online classes or a private live-virtual cohort, or we can train onsite at your plant, shop, smelter or yard. An ASNT NDT Level III leads every course, and your employer certifies you under its written practice.
Quebec needs more candour than most markets, so here it is up front. Canada's national NDT certification scheme is CAN/CGSB-48.9712, the Canadian adoption of ISO 9712. Quebec's large aerospace sector mostly works under NAS 410 or EN 4179 programmes required by aircraft and engine makers. Atlantis NDT does not train toward CAN/CGSB-48.9712, ISO 9712 or NAS 410, and we claim no CGSB recognition. What we teach is the American employer-based scheme, SNT-TC-1A. In Quebec it suits a narrower but real group: heavy fabricators and equipment makers building ASME- or API-code products for US customers, plants owned by US-headquartered companies whose corporate standards reference SNT-TC-1A, suppliers to US industrial buyers, inspection companies that send crews to New York, Vermont, New England or Ontario jobs with US clients, and technicians who intend to work in the US. This page explains where that fit is real and where it is not, maps Quebec's NDT economy from Montreal to the Côte-Nord, and shows how to request a Quebec NDT training quote. We usually reply within one business day.
SNT-TC-1A, CAN/CGSB-48.9712 or NAS 410: what Quebec work requires
Direct answer: Canadian-code work in Quebec, including structures, bridges, many pressure-equipment jobs and federal projects, usually requires CAN/CGSB-48.9712. Aerospace production mostly requires NAS 410 or EN 4179 programmes. SNT-TC-1A is the right fit for US-code fabrication, US customers and US-owned plants that specify it, and for technicians who plan to work in the US.
| Quebec situation | Scheme usually expected | Does Atlantis SNT-TC-1A training fit? |
|---|---|---|
| Aircraft, engine and landing gear production in Greater Montreal | NAS 410 / EN 4179, plus the prime's own requirements | No. NAS 410 programmes need their own route, which we do not offer |
| Structural steel and bridges under CSA W59 / CSA S6 | CAN/CGSB-48.9712 through CSA W178.1 inspection organisations | No, not on its own |
| Hydroelectric, federal shipbuilding and public infrastructure contracts | Contract specification, typically CGSB or ISO 9712 based | Usually no. Check the contract |
| ASME vessels, heat exchangers, B31.3 piping and turbine or penstock components built in Quebec for US buyers | SNT-TC-1A through ASME Section V and the client | Yes. This is the core case |
| US-owned refinery, smelter or chemical plant whose corporate standard accepts SNT-TC-1A | Owner specification | Yes, where the owner accepts it |
| Quebec technicians heading to New York, Vermont or other US work | The US employer's SNT-TC-1A written practice | Yes |
The Canadian scheme is in transition. The Canadian General Standards Board, which published CAN/CGSB-48.9712, ceased operations on 1 April 2026. Published guidance says the standard remains valid through its current cycle and that existing certificates are unaffected. Natural Resources Canada's NDT Certification Body has said its certification services continue without interruption, and the CWB Group remains accredited to certify NDT personnel to the same standard. Confirm the current certification body before you build a CGSB plan. If what you need is a CGSB or NAS 410 certificate, we will tell you on the first call.
Where NDT technicians work in Quebec
Direct answer: Quebec NDT work concentrates in Greater Montreal's aerospace, refining, rail and fabrication base, the Quebec City and Lévis refining and shipbuilding area, the aluminium smelters of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, the Côte-Nord and the St. Lawrence, Hydro-Québec's dams and generating stations, the Bécancour and Trois-Rivières industrial parks, and the mining regions of Abitibi-Témiscamingue and the Côte-Nord.
Greater Montreal: aerospace, refining and manufacturing
Montreal is one of the world's main aerospace centres. Business jets, the A220 line at Mirabel, gas-turbine engines in Longueuil, helicopters, landing gear, flight simulators and a large airline and MRO base all sit in the metropolitan area. Production NDT in these plants is mostly PT, MT, ET, UT and RT done under NAS 410 or EN 4179 programmes, and Atlantis does not position itself as a route into them. Montreal East also has a refinery, petrochemical plants, pipeline terminals and port facilities. The wider region has rail-car and transit manufacturing, metal fabrication, foundries and heavy equipment builders, many of which export to US buyers. That is where SNT-TC-1A training is relevant: UT and MT on ASME and AWS fabrication, PT on stainless equipment, RT on piping welds. See NDT training in Montreal, Practical NDT in Montreal and the NDT ERP for Montreal inspection companies.
Quebec City and Lévis
Lévis, across the river from Quebec City, has the province's other large refinery and the Chantier Davie shipyard, which builds and refits federal and commercial vessels. The Quebec City region adds pulp and paper, food processing, manufacturing and the port. Refinery turnarounds bring UT and PAUT corrosion work, RT on repair welds, ET on exchangers, and MT and PT on rotating equipment. Shipyard work is heavy on UT thickness, MT and VT, often under federal or class-society specifications. See Practical NDT in Quebec City.
Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and the aluminium belt
Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean is one of the largest aluminium-producing regions in the world. Smelters there, and others at Bécancour, Deschambault, Baie-Comeau and Sept-Îles, run pot lines, anode plants, casting centres, gas-treatment systems, cranes and heavy structures that need MT and UT on welds and lifting equipment, thickness surveys on ducts and piping, and VT throughout. Port Alfred, hydro stations and paper mills add more. See Practical NDT in Saguenay.
Hydro-Québec's generating system
Quebec runs on hydroelectricity: the La Grande complex in James Bay, the Manicouagan and Outardes stations on the Côte-Nord, the Romaine complex and dozens of smaller stations. Penstocks, gates, spiral cases, turbine runners, shafts and generator components get periodic UT, MT, PT and VT, and new-build and refurbishment projects add fabrication NDT. Most of this work follows Canadian contract specifications. Turbine and penstock component makers in Quebec that also sell to US utilities are the ones that most often need an SNT-TC-1A programme.
Bécancour, Trois-Rivières and the St. Lawrence corridor
The Bécancour industrial park on the south shore holds chemical, metals and, more recently, battery-materials plants. Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan add pulp and paper, metal processing and manufacturing. Process plants mean pressure vessels and piping inspected under Quebec's pressure installation rules, with UT, PT, RT and ET as the core methods.
Mining regions: Abitibi-Témiscamingue and the Côte-Nord
Abitibi-Témiscamingue holds major gold mines around Malartic, Val-d'Or and Rouyn-Noranda, along with a copper smelter. The Côte-Nord has iron-ore mines around Fermont, pellet plants, rail lines to the coast and port terminals at Port-Cartier and Sept-Îles. Mining equipment, crushers, mills, conveyors, haul trucks and ore cars need MT and UT on welds, shafts and structures. These sites are remote, so online theory plus onsite practicals is the only sensible model.
Rail, bridges and public infrastructure
Quebec has major rail-car and transit manufacturing, the Montreal metro and REM networks, and a large provincial bridge and overpass inventory. Infrastructure owners in Canada generally specify CSA W59, CSA S6 and CGSB-certified personnel. That is a common reason SNT-TC-1A certification alone will not satisfy a Quebec contract. Rail equipment built for US transit agencies or freight railways may follow US specifications instead.
ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Quebec employers
Direct answer: Atlantis NDT offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and Level II courses in eight methods, plus Level III exam preparation. The table maps each method to typical Quebec work where SNT-TC-1A applies. Your employer's written practice sets the exact hours.
| Method | Levels | What Quebec employers use it for | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) | I, II, III prep | Weld inspection on US-bound vessels and penstocks, refinery thickness surveys, smelter and mining structures | Level I: employer requirements only. Level II: Level I training plus documented experience |
| Phased Array UT (PAUT) | II, III prep | Encoded weld scans on heavy fabrication, corrosion mapping in refineries and chemical plants | UT Level II recommended first |
| Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) | II, III prep | Heavy-wall vessels and thick fabrication welds | UT Level II recommended |
| Radiographic Testing (RT) | I, II, III prep | Piping and vessel welds in fabrication shops, refinery repair welds | Gamma work requires CNSC exposure device operator certification or direct supervision by a certified EDO |
| Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) | I, II, III prep | Smelter cranes and structures, mining equipment, rail components, fabrication welds | Employer requirements only |
| Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) | I, II, III prep | Stainless and alloy equipment, valves, pumps, castings | Employer requirements only |
| Visual Testing (VT) | I, II, III prep | Weld visual on US-code fabrication, in-service pressure equipment, tanks | Employer requirements only |
| Eddy Current Testing (ET) | I, II, III prep | Heat exchanger tubing in refineries and chemical plants, conductivity and surface checks on non-aerospace parts | Employer requirements only |
For ASNT Level III, the Level III training programme prepares candidates for the Basic and method examinations online. A CGSB Level 3 or a NAS 410 Level 3 role follows different requirements and is outside our scope.
NDT training by city in Quebec
Direct answer: Atlantis has a dedicated NDT training page for Montreal and Practical NDT simulator pages for Montreal, Quebec City and Saguenay. Every Quebec region is served the same way, with live online classes and onsite delivery at the employer's site. We have no classroom in Quebec.
| City or region | Main NDT sectors | Pages |
|---|---|---|
| Montreal and Laval / Longueuil / Mirabel | Aerospace, refining, petrochemicals, rail and transit manufacturing, fabrication | Montreal NDT training; Montreal simulator practice |
| Quebec City and Lévis | Refining, shipbuilding, pulp and paper, manufacturing | Quebec City simulator practice |
| Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean | Aluminium smelting, hydro, pulp and paper, port | Saguenay simulator practice |
| Trois-Rivières and Bécancour | Chemicals, metals, battery materials, paper | Online and onsite; ask about a cohort |
| Sept-Îles, Baie-Comeau and the Côte-Nord | Aluminium, iron ore, ports, hydro | Online and onsite |
| Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d'Or | Gold and copper mining, smelting | Online and onsite |
Montreal. In Montreal the first question is which scheme your customer requires. For aerospace production, it is almost always NAS 410 or EN 4179. For heavy fabrication, pumps, valves and pressure equipment sold to US industry, it is usually SNT-TC-1A. We work with the second group, and with technicians planning US careers.
Quebec City and Lévis. Refinery and industrial maintenance contractors here schedule training before turnaround seasons. Shipyard work generally follows federal or class specifications.
Saguenay. Smelter maintenance teams and their contractors usually need MT and UT Level II on cranes, structures and pressure equipment. If the plant owner's corporate standard references SNT-TC-1A, we can train in-house staff and support their certification under the employer's written practice.
Côte-Nord and Abitibi. Remote mining and smelting employers need training that comes to them. Online theory and a short onsite practical block avoid sending staff on a long trip south.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in Quebec, step by step
Direct answer: under SNT-TC-1A, a Quebec employer certifies its own technicians. That happens after classroom training, documented experience, general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III, and a vision test, all as the employer's written practice requires. The certification belongs to that employer's programme. It is not a Canadian national certificate and not an aerospace NAS 410 certification.
- Written practice. Your employer adopts an SNT-TC-1A written practice that sets hours, exams and recertification. We can prepare one with you: written practice development.
- Classroom training. Complete the required formal hours, live online or onsite. The training requirements matrix lists SNT-TC-1A recommended hours by method and level.
- Experience. Log supervised on-the-job hours in the method on real work, with records kept by your employer.
- Exams. General, specific and practical examinations administered under a Level III.
- Vision test. Near-vision and colour contrast, normally annual.
- Employer certification. The employer certifies you for the method and level. A new employer recertifies you under its own practice.
- Recertification. At the interval your written practice sets.
If you are also working toward CGSB certification, keep one experience log that can support both schemes, and check the certification body's evidence rules early.
Radiography licensing and other Quebec requirements
Direct answer: gamma radiography in Quebec is federally regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Operators must be CNSC-certified exposure device operators or work under the direct supervision of one. Pressure installations are regulated by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ), and owners must have their equipment inspected by organisations the RBQ recognises.
Industrial radiography
The CNSC licenses nuclear substances and exposure devices in Quebec as in every province. There is no Agreement State model. Operating a gamma exposure device requires CNSC exposure device operator (EDO) certification or direct supervision by a certified EDO. CNSC guidance describes formal EDO vocational training and a supervised on-the-job programme before the written exam, and CSA PCP-09 is the certification guide. Atlantis RT training covers technique, image quality and interpretation to code acceptance criteria. It does not replace EDO certification. X-ray equipment falls under provincial rules, so confirm current requirements with your radiation safety officer.
Pressure installations: RBQ
The RBQ administers Quebec's rules on boilers, pressure vessels and pressure piping. Under them, the owner-user of a pressure installation must have it inspected by an organisation the RBQ recognises. Quebec references CSA B51, the ASME code sections and the BNQ 3650-900 installation code, among others. Manufacturers outside Canada register equipment through ASME and the National Board as well. Ask the RBQ, your recognised inspection organisation and the owner which NDE personnel certification they accept for each job.
Pipelines
Interprovincial pipelines serving Montreal and the St. Lawrence corridor fall under the Canada Energy Regulator. CSA Z662 is the core pipeline standard, and API 1104 appears on projects with US owners or contractors. Gas distribution within Quebec follows provincial rules.
Language
Quebec employers have French-language obligations under the Charter of the French Language, including for many workplace documents. When you ask for a quote, tell us the language needs of your crew and your documentation, and we will tell you honestly what we can provide.
Codes common in Quebec work
ASME Section V, VIII and IX, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, CSA B51, CSA Z662, CSA W59 and CSA S6, AWS D1.1 for US-bound structural steel, API 650 and 653 for tanks, and NAS 410 / EN 4179 in aerospace. Quebec companies that sell into the US often work to both Canadian and US codes on the same shop floor.
Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Quebec
Direct answer: Atlantis delivers Quebec training as live online seats, private live-virtual cohorts, or onsite training at your plant, shop, smelter or mine site with a Level III instructor. Theory can be done from anywhere in the province. Practical sessions use real specimens at your site.
Quebec covers vast distances. Sept-Îles, Fermont, Chibougamau or Rouyn-Noranda are a long way from any training room in Montreal or Quebec City. Online theory keeps people at work, and onsite practicals keep training tied to the welds, castings and procedures your technicians actually inspect. We schedule around smelter and mill shutdowns, refinery turnarounds in Montreal East and Lévis, hydro maintenance outages and the construction-holiday period many Quebec employers observe in summer.
- Live online seats for individuals anywhere in Quebec.
- Private live-virtual cohorts built around your codes and procedures.
- Onsite at your facility with your equipment and specimens, including practical exam support under your written practice.
- Blended online theory, simulator practice and a short onsite practical block.
We have no classroom in Quebec. Ask about onsite training for your Quebec team, or see online NDT training and corporate NDT training.
For Quebec employers: written practice and Level III services
Direct answer: Quebec employers that need SNT-TC-1A certification for US customers or US-code products need a written practice, a Level III for exams and procedure approval, and records an auditor can follow. Atlantis provides these remotely or onsite. That includes employers that keep CGSB-certified staff for Canadian contracts.
Typical Quebec cases include a pressure-vessel or heat-exchanger shop on the South Shore that wins a US order calling for SNT-TC-1A personnel, a turbine or penstock component maker supplying a US utility, a plant whose US parent's corporate inspection standard references SNT-TC-1A, and an inspection company sending crews to US jobs across the border. We help with:
- SNT-TC-1A written practice development and revision (written practice development);
- outside Level III services: exam preparation and grading, procedure and technique review;
- clear records of which technicians hold SNT-TC-1A, CGSB or customer-specific qualifications for each job;
- preparation for customer and third-party audits of your NDT programme;
- certification, training and vision records in software that tracks ASNT and CGSB certificates together (Atlantis NDT ERP).

Practise before your practical exam
Direct answer: the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator gives Quebec trainees browser-based practice in 12 methods across 5 virtual environments before their hands-on exam. It is a practice tool only. It does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that your written practice, a CGSB scheme or a NAS 410 programme requires.
The NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site and storage tank environments cover fabrication welds, process piping, tanks and aircraft structures. Trainees at remote smelters and mines can practise between shifts, and supervisors can use the simulator to check readiness before booking practical exam time. See Practical NDT and Practical NDT in Quebec. For written questions, try the UT Level II practice questions.
Your instructor
Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He prepares the course content, the examinations and the employer written practices. He will give you a straight answer on whether SNT-TC-1A, CGSB or an aerospace scheme is what your Quebec work actually needs.
NDT training in Quebec: frequently asked questions
How do I get NDT certified in Quebec?
For most Canadian-code work, get CAN/CGSB-48.9712 (ISO 9712) certification through an accredited certification body. Confirm the current certification body, as arrangements changed in 2026. Aerospace production uses NAS 410 or EN 4179 programmes run by employers. For US customers and US-code work, your employer certifies you under SNT-TC-1A, which is the only route Atlantis trains for.
Is there online NDT training in Quebec?
Yes. Atlantis runs live online and live-virtual SNT-TC-1A classes that Quebec technicians can join from anywhere in the province, with practicals on real specimens at the employer's site. See online NDT training.
Does Atlantis offer CGSB, ISO 9712 or NAS 410 training in Quebec?
No. Atlantis trains to SNT-TC-1A only. We claim no CGSB recognition and do not run NAS 410 or EN 4179 programmes. If those are what your job needs, choose a provider on that route.
Is SNT-TC-1A useful for Montreal aerospace jobs?
For most aerospace production roles, no. Those employers certify under NAS 410 or EN 4179. SNT-TC-1A is more useful in Montreal's heavy fabrication, pressure equipment, refining and industrial sectors that serve US customers.
Do I need a licence for industrial radiography in Quebec?
For gamma radiography, yes. You need CNSC exposure device operator certification, or direct supervision by a certified EDO, and your employer needs a CNSC licence. X-ray equipment follows provincial rules.
How much does NDT training cost in Quebec?
It is quoted on request. The price depends on the method and level, group size, online or onsite delivery, travel to remote regions, and whether you also need a written practice or Level III services. Cohort and onsite quotes usually come back within one business day. Request a Quebec quote.
Which NDT methods are most in demand in Quebec?
UT and MT dominate in heavy industry, smelting, mining and hydro. PT and ET are central in aerospace and process plants, RT in fabrication and piping, and PAUT and TOFD on heavy-wall fabrication and refinery work.
Can you train our team onsite in Saguenay, Lévis or Sept-Îles?
Yes. Onsite delivery at your plant, shop or mine site is a standard option. The instructor uses your equipment and specimens and supports practical exams under your written practice.
Is training available in French?
Tell us your crew's language needs when you ask for a quote and we will tell you honestly what we can provide. Quebec employers also have French-language obligations for workplace documents under the Charter of the French Language.
How long does UT Level II training take?
Your employer's written practice decides. SNT-TC-1A recommends minimum classroom and experience hours, listed in the training requirements matrix, and the experience usually takes the longest.
Can I use SNT-TC-1A to work in New York or Vermont?
SNT-TC-1A certification belongs to the employer that issues it. A US employer will review your documented training and experience and certify you under its own written practice. Well-kept training records make that review straightforward.
Can I become an ASNT Level III in Quebec?
Yes. Prepare for the ASNT Basic and method examinations online with our Level III preparation. For context on pay across levels, see the NDT salary guide.
