SNT-TC-1A certification is issued by the employer against its own written practice. The sequence is:

1. Written practice. The employer writes and adopts a written practice setting out levels, training, experience, examinations, vision and certifying authority. In Quebec, consider the language of this document early. See written practice development.
2. Formal training. Complete the required classroom hours for the method and level, delivered online, onsite or both. The requirements matrix lists recommended hours.
3. Experience. Log supervised experience in the method, in the hours required by the written practice, with sign-off.
4. General examination. Written, on method theory.
5. Specific examination. Written, on the employer's procedures, equipment and the codes or customer specifications that apply, for example a US customer's NDT specification for forgings.
6. Practical examination. Hands-on, on specimens with known flaws, administered and graded by a Level III or designee under the written practice.
7. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast, with near vision checked annually.
8. Certification. The employer's certifying authority signs and records it.
9. Recertification. At the interval the written practice sets. Changing employer means certifying again under the new written practice.

Online or onsite NDT training for Montreal crews
