NDT training in Saint John: how it works for Saint John employers and technicians

Canada's national scheme still comes first for most local work. CAN/CGSB-48.9712, the Canadian adoption of ISO 9712, is administered by Natural Resources Canada's National NDT Certification Body, which NRCan confirmed continues to operate normally despite the 2026 changes at the Canadian General Standards Board. The CWB Group is also authorized to certify NDT personnel. Candidates seeking CGSB certification need training from an NRCan Recognized Training Organization, and Atlantis does not claim that status. ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in Saint John

Each course follows the SNT-TC-1A recommended body of knowledge. The employer's written practice sets formal training and experience hours, and the training requirements matrix shows SNT-TC-1A's recommended figures for each method and level.

UT for tankage and in-service work. Saint John has a large concentration of aboveground storage tanks. Crude, product and LNG-related storage around the refinery, terminals and port means constant thickness work on shells, floors, roofs and nozzles. UT Level I and II training for Saint John candidates covers thickness gauging on corroded and coated surfaces, grid layout, and recording data that feeds fitness-for-service and remaining-life calculations. Level II adds angle-beam weld inspection for repair welds and new construction. Tank inspector certification, such as API 653, is a separate credential that Atlantis does not train for. PAUT and TOFD. Taught at Level II and III on a UT Level II foundation: focal laws, sectorial and linear scans, encoded C-scan corrosion mapping, and TOFD sizing. In a refinery turnaround, PAUT on weld repairs lets work continue around the inspection without clearing a radiography exclusion zone, which is one reason local contractors are moving to it.

RT. Exposure principles, image quality indicators, film and digital interpretation, and profile radiography for corrosion under insulation. Canadian radiation certification is separate (see FAQ).

MT, PT and VT. Surface methods keep outages moving. MT covers carbon steel welds, lifting equipment and marine structures. PT covers stainless and alloy components in process units and pulp mills. VT covers every weld and every in-service component opened for inspection.

ET. Refineries, thermal plants and mills all have heat exchangers and condensers inspected during outages. The ET course covers impedance-plane interpretation, probe and reference standard selection, and tube inspection technique.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Saint John, step by step

SNT-TC-1A certification is employer-issued. The steps for a Saint John technician are:

1. Written practice. The employer adopts a written practice defining levels, training and experience, examinations, vision checks and who certifies. See written practice development.
2. Formal training. Classroom hours for the method and level, delivered live online, onsite or both. See the requirements matrix for recommended hours.
3. Experience. Supervised, documented experience in the method. In Saint John it is often built during refinery, mill and power outages, so sign the log as you go.

Where NDT technicians work in Saint John

• Refining and tank storage. Saint John's large refinery and its tank farms and marine terminals are the core of local in-service inspection: piping and vessel corrosion surveys, tank inspection, weld inspection on repairs, and turnaround surges using every method.

ASME Section V covers NDE methods. Pipelines follow CSA Z662. Nuclear in-service inspection follows CSA N285.4 under CNSC oversight. Structural welding follows CSA W59 or AWS D1.1. Industrial radiography is regulated federally by the CNSC.

How long does UT Level 2 training take?

The written practice sets the formal training and experience hours. The requirements matrix lists the SNT-TC-1A recommendations. Logged experience usually takes longer than classroom time.

Do I need a licence for radiography in New Brunswick?

Gamma radiography falls under the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. The employer holds a CNSC licence, and operators must be CNSC Certified Exposure Device Operators or trainees under the direct supervision and continuous observation of one. X-ray equipment is also subject to provincial rules. Our RT course does not grant any radiation certification.

Can Atlantis train me for nuclear in-service inspection?

Our SNT-TC-1A method courses build UT and ET fundamentals, but nuclear in-service inspection has its own owner- and programme-specific qualification requirements. Check them with the plant or its inspection vendor.

What does NDT training cost in Saint John?
