ASNT SNT-TC-1A training and certification for Canadian employers

Atlantis NDT trains NDT personnel to ASNT SNT-TC-1A and helps Canadian employers certify them under their own written practice. Courses are led by founder Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III in UT, RT, MT, PT and VT, and run year-round.

What Atlantis NDT provides

  • Level I and Level II training: ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level I and Level II courses in UT, RT, MT, PT and VT, plus PAUT and TOFD courses, for which conventional UT Level II or equivalent UT experience is recommended first. Course hours follow the SNT-TC-1A recommended classroom hours for each method and level.
  • Level III exam preparation: Preparation for the ASNT NDT Level III Basic and Method examinations, and for Level III examinations under an employer's written practice.
  • Employer certification under your written practice: As your outside-agency Level III, Atlantis NDT's ASNT NDT Level III administers and grades the general, specific and practical examinations in UT, RT, MT, PT and VT, and helps you document each technician's training, experience, vision and examination records so that you can certify them under your written practice.
  • Written practice: We write an SNT-TC-1A written practice for your company or review the one you have, so that your training, examinations and certification records follow it.
  • ASNT central certification: Exam preparation for candidates applying to ASNT for ASNT NDT Level II (MT, PT, RT, UT, VT) or ASNT NDT Level III, which ASNT examines and certifies.

Who certifies

  • Under SNT-TC-1A. Your employer certifies you, under its own written practice. The certification stays with that employer; a new employer recertifies you under its written practice.
  • Under ASNT central certification. ASNT examines and certifies you for ASNT NDT Level II or ASNT NDT Level III, and the certificate is yours.
  • Atlantis NDT. Trains you and, as your employer's outside-agency Level III, examines you and prepares the certification records. A course on its own never certifies anyone.

Who it is for

Employers whose customers, contracts or codes specify ASNT SNT-TC-1A or another employer-based scheme, for example:

  • Aerospace and aviation. MRO and manufacturing, where your customer or approval specifies an employer-based scheme such as SNT-TC-1A or NAS 410. Atlantis NDT trains and examines to SNT-TC-1A only and does not run NAS 410 training; NAS 410 Level 3 services are available through an associate who holds NAS 410 Level 3. Transport Canada's advisory circular for approved maintenance organizations lists NAS 410, ATA Specification 105 and CAN/CGSB-48.9712 among its recognized NDT trade standards and does not list SNT-TC-1A, so check your approval first: Transport Canada AC 573-003.
  • Maritime and shipbuilding. Shipyards, ship repair and marine service companies whose owner, contract or class requirements accept an SNT-TC-1A written practice.
  • Nuclear supply chain. Fabricators and service companies doing nuclear supply-chain and US-code work that specifies SNT-TC-1A. This is not a route into in-service inspection at Canadian CANDU stations, where the licensee's inspection program sets the certification its NDT personnel must hold.
  • Oil, gas and pipelines. Contractors and fabricators on US-owned or cross-border work, and crews that rotate between Canadian and US sites, where the client or code asks for SNT-TC-1A.

How the training runs

Courses run year-round and enrolment is open all year. Theory is online and primarily self-paced, with access from the moment you enrol and Level III support for questions. Practical training runs in the Practical NDT simulator and in person at your facility, where the practical examination is taken on real specimens. Atlantis NDT has no training centre in Canada.

Ask about ASNT SNT-TC-1A training in Canada: tell us the methods, levels and number of technicians, and the scheme your customer or contract names.

If your job specifies CAN/CGSB-48.9712

CAN/CGSB-48.9712, an identical adoption of ISO 9712, is Canada's national standard for NDT personnel certification and a third-party scheme. A job that specifies it needs a certificate from the Natural Resources Canada NDT Certification Body (NRCan NDTCB) or CWB Group, and method training from one of their Recognized Training Organizations (RTOs). Check the job posting, contract or client specification before you choose a course.

Atlantis NDT is not an RTO. Atlantis NDT is not a Recognized Training Organization for NRCan or CWB Group. Our courses do not count toward NRCan or CWB certification, so take CAN/CGSB-48.9712 method training with an RTO.

NRCan or CWB Group. CWB Group states there is no difference in validity, recognition or technical requirements between the two. The NRCan NDTCB requires at least 40% of course time to be practical. NRCan written exams are taken in person at its Authorized Examination Centres; CWB Group offers remote invigilation of written exams.

The CGSB has closed. The Canadian General Standards Board ceased operations on April 1, 2026. It published the standard; it did not issue certificates. CAN/CGSB-48.9712 remains valid through its current cycle, and NRCan says its certification services continue without change.

Level 3 study support. NRCan allows CAN/CGSB-48.9712 Level 3 preparation by courses or by self-study, provided the candidate gives documentary evidence of training acceptable to the NDTCB. The NDTCB decides what it accepts, so confirm with it before you rely on our study support: ask about Level 3 study support.

NDT training in Fort McMurray: how it works for Fort McMurray employers and technicians

Short answer: Atlantis NDT runs ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III training in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET for oil sands employers and technicians in Fort McMurray and the wider Wood Buffalo region. Theory is online and primarily self-paced, which fits around rotations, and practicals run onsite at your maintenance shop or plant. It is built for SNT-TC-1A written practices. Canada's national scheme is CAN/CGSB-48.9712, and Atlantis does not provide or claim recognition for CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification.

Fort McMurray is not a typical training market. Most technicians live on a rotation, whether fly-in fly-out, drive-in or camp-based, and have their days off somewhere else, often in Edmonton, Calgary, the Maritimes or Newfoundland. Crews are spread across mine sites, upgraders and in-situ (SAGD) pads that can be an hour or more from town. A training model that expects a technician to show up at a classroom in town for two weeks straight rarely works here. Two models do: theory online during days off, and practicals onsite at the operator's or contractor's maintenance facility during a planned window.

The certification question needs a clear answer too. In Canada, NDT personnel certification to CAN/CGSB-48.9712 (the Canadian adoption of ISO 9712) is issued by Natural Resources Canada's National NDT Certification Body, and the CWB Group is also authorized to certify NDT personnel. That scheme is widely expected across Alberta's oil sands. It needs training from an NRCan Recognized Training Organization, and Atlantis does not claim that status. Our SNT-TC-1A-based training fits a different need: contractors and service companies that run SNT-TC-1A written practices, mainly because their parent companies are American, they work to US codes, or they rotate crews between Canadian and US sites. For those companies we provide training, examinations and the Level III oversight behind the programme.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in Fort McMurray

Every course follows the SNT-TC-1A recommended body of knowledge. Your company's written practice sets the formal training hours and experience for each method and level. The training requirements matrix lists the SNT-TC-1A recommendations if you want to compare.

MethodLevelsWhat Fort McMurray employers use it forPrerequisite
UT (ultrasonic testing)I, II, IIIWall-thickness surveys on hydrotransport and tailings slurry lines, upgrader piping, SAGD well-pad piping, and weld inspection on repairsLevel I: employer entry rules. Level II: Level I plus logged experience

RT (radiographic testing)I, II, IIIWeld radiography on piping repairs and tie-ins, and profile radiography for corrosion under insulationCNSC exposure device rules apply separately
MT (magnetic particle)I, II, IIICrack detection on heavy-haul truck frames, shovel and dragline components, crusher structures and welded repairsEmployer entry rules
PT (liquid penetrant)I, II, IIIStainless and alloy welds, pump and valve components, non-magnetic partsEmployer entry rules
VT (visual testing)I, II, IIIWeld, fit-up and wear inspection, visual inspection of pressure equipment and structuresEmployer entry rules
ET (eddy current)I, II, IIIHeat exchanger tube inspection in upgraders and steam-generation plants, surface cracks on conductive partsEmployer entry rules

UT in an erosion environment. The oil sands wear steel out fast. Slurry of sand, water and bitumen is pumped through pipelines that thin from the inside, and upgraders run hot, corrosive services. UT Level I and II training for Fort McMurray crews spends more time than usual on thickness gauging on rough, coated, curved and hot surfaces, repeatability between readings, datum points and grid layouts, and data recording that stands up to trend analysis. Angle-beam weld inspection is still taught in full, because wear-plate repairs, pipe replacements and pressure-equipment repairs all need weld examination.

PAUT and TOFD. Advanced ultrasonic methods are taught at Level II and III once a UT Level II foundation is in place. The coursework covers focal laws, encoded scans, C-scan corrosion mapping and flaw sizing. On mine sites PAUT is also used on large rotating and structural components, where a quick encoded scan does better than point-by-point UT. TOFD is taught as a sizing and monitoring technique for heavy-wall equipment.

RT. The RT course teaches exposure principles, image quality, film and digital interpretation, and weld discontinuity recognition. Gamma radiography in Canada requires CNSC-certified exposure device operators, and our course does not provide that certification. See the FAQ.

MT, PT and VT on heavy equipment. Mining fleets depend on surface methods. Haul truck frames, shovel booms and dippers, crusher structures and welded repairs are checked with MT between shifts and during planned maintenance. Our MT course covers yoke technique on thick sections and awkward geometry, field lighting for fluorescent inspection, and how to interpret indications on weld repairs. PT and VT follow the same practical approach.

ET. Upgraders and steam-generation plants have heat exchangers that are inspected during outages. The ET course covers impedance-plane interpretation, calibration standards and tube inspection techniques.

Level III. ASNT Level III exam preparation is online and self-paced, which suits rotational schedules.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Fort McMurray, step by step

SNT-TC-1A is employer-based. The company you work for certifies you under its written practice, so start by confirming your employer uses one.

  1. Written practice in place. The employer's written practice defines levels, required training and experience, examinations, vision checks and who certifies. See written practice development.
  2. Formal training. Complete the classroom hours required for the method and level. Rotational workers often do this online over several sets of days off. The requirements matrix shows the SNT-TC-1A recommendations.
  3. On-the-job experience. Log supervised experience in the method on real work. On rotations, keep a signed log each shift, because experience that isn't documented doesn't count.
  4. General examination. A written test of method theory.
  5. Specific examination. A written test on the employer's procedures, equipment and applicable codes. For an oil sands contractor this might include the owner's thickness-survey procedure or ASME B31.3 weld acceptance criteria.
  6. Practical examination. Hands-on testing of real specimens with known flaws, administered and graded by a Level III or a designee under the written practice.
  7. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast, with near vision checked annually.
  8. Certification. The employer signs and files it.
  9. Recertification. At the interval the written practice sets. A change of employer means recertification under the new written practice.

Online or onsite NDT training for Fort McMurray crews

No Atlantis classroom exists in Fort McMurray, and none is implied. Fort McMurray programmes are built around rotations instead.

  • Online theory during days off. Self-paced online theory that fits common rotation patterns, so technicians can finish it from home wherever that is. Mock exams and progress tracking are built in. See online NDT training.
  • Onsite practicals at your facility. An instructor comes to your maintenance shop, laydown yard or plant training room and runs practicals and examinations on your equipment. Site access, orientation and safety tickets are organised with you in advance. See corporate NDT training.
  • Blended programmes for contractors. A contractor with technicians on different rotations can have everyone take theory online in their own schedule and meet for one onsite block.

Scheduling around shutdowns is the biggest planning question. Oil sands operators run major planned turnarounds on upgraders and extraction plants, and in the lead-up to one every contractor is short of qualified technicians. Train in the quieter months so experience hours can build before the turnaround. Send us your turnaround calendar and rotation pattern, and we reply within one business day. Request a Fort McMurray training quote.

Where NDT technicians work in Fort McMurray

The Wood Buffalo region is the heart of the Athabasca oil sands, and NDT work there falls into a few distinct groups.

  • Oil sands mining and extraction. Open-pit operations north of town run huge fleets of haul trucks and shovels, along with crushers, conveyors, hydrotransport lines and extraction plants. The NDT here is mostly MT and VT on heavy equipment and structures, and UT thickness on slurry and tailings piping.
  • Upgrading. The upgraders that convert bitumen into synthetic crude run high-temperature, high-pressure, hydrogen-bearing services such as cokers, hydrotreaters and hydrogen plants. They need PAUT, TOFD, UT, RT and ET, especially during turnarounds.
  • In-situ (SAGD) facilities. Steam-assisted gravity drainage plants to the south and around Wood Buffalo run steam generators, water treatment and well-pad piping. UT, RT and ET cover boiler tubes, steam lines and produced-water systems.
  • Pipelines and terminals. Pipelines carry diluted bitumen and synthetic crude south toward Edmonton. Construction and integrity work runs to CSA Z662, under the Alberta Energy Regulator or, for interprovincial lines, the Canada Energy Regulator.
  • Maintenance and fabrication shops. Contractor shops in town and in the industrial parks handle repairs, fabrication and component rebuilds, with the same method mix.

Regulators and codes. Pressure equipment in Alberta is regulated under the Safety Codes Act, with ABSA as the pressure-equipment safety authority. Owner quality programmes and ABSA requirements decide which NDT certification is acceptable for pressure-equipment work, and in practice CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification is widely expected on those scopes. ASME Section V, Section VIII and B31.3 are the everyday NDE, vessel and piping references. CSA B51 is the Canadian boiler and pressure vessel code, CSA Z662 covers pipelines, and CSA W59 and AWS D1.1 cover structural welding on mine and plant structures. Industrial radiography is controlled by the CNSC.

What Fort McMurray employers typically ask for. Postings commonly ask for CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification in the relevant methods, a CNSC Certified Exposure Device Operator for RT crews, site safety tickets (often including H2S Alive and a mine or plant orientation), and a record of shutdown experience. Contractors with US ties may also ask for SNT-TC-1A certification to their written practice. For pay context, see the NDT salary guide instead of anecdotal numbers.

Level III services and written practices for Fort McMurray NDT companies

Contractors in the oil sands often discover they need an SNT-TC-1A programme when a US parent company, a US-owned client or a cross-border contract asks for one. A written practice, procedures and a Level III who can administer examinations are all needed, and few Fort McMurray firms have a Level III on staff for that scheme. That's the gap Atlantis fills.

  • Written practice development. We draft a written practice that fits rotational work, including remote experience logging, examination windows between rotations and records that survive staff turnover. See written practice development.
  • Outsourced Level III. Procedure and technique sheet writing, examination preparation and grading, and audit support when a client or parent company reviews your programme.
  • Programme audits. We review an existing SNT-TC-1A programme before a client audit and give you a list of gaps and fixes.
  • Dual-scheme clarity. Where the company also employs CAN/CGSB-48.9712-certified technicians, we write the written practice so it's clear which certification covers which work and client.

Practise before the practical exam

Rotations leave gaps between hands-on sessions, and skills fade in those gaps. Practical NDT is a 3D simulator where trainees can practise 12 method families in twelve workplaces, including an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It runs on days off wherever the technician is. The oil and gas site and storage tank scenes are the closest to oil sands work. It is practice only. It does not replace hands-on training or the practical examination on real specimens your written practice requires. For written exams, try UT Level 2 practice questions.

Your instructor

Programmes are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He is responsible for course content, examinations and written-practice work, including onsite practical blocks for Fort McMurray employers.

Frequently asked questions about NDT training in Fort McMurray

How do I get NDT certified in Fort McMurray?

For most Canadian owner and pressure-equipment work you need CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification issued by the NRCan NDT Certification Body or CWB Group, with method training from one of their Recognized Training Organizations. If your employer certifies under an SNT-TC-1A written practice, the employer certifies you after training, logged experience, examinations and a vision test. Atlantis delivers the training and Level III examinations for that route.

Can I do NDT training online while working a rotation?

Yes, for theory. It is primarily self-paced, so it fits around your days off. Practical training and the practical examination have to be done hands-on with real equipment, and we run those onsite at the employer's facility. See online NDT training.

Is ASNT certification accepted in the oil sands?

It depends on the owner and the scope. SNT-TC-1A certification is valid within the employer programme that issued it, and contractors with US ties use it. Many oil sands owners and pressure-equipment scopes expect CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification. Check the owner specification before you choose a route.

Will Atlantis training count toward my CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification?

No. NRCan requires CAN/CGSB-48.9712 training from its Recognized Training Organizations, and Atlantis does not claim that status. Our courses are for SNT-TC-1A programmes.

How long does UT Level 2 training take?

Your employer's written practice sets the formal training and experience hours, and the requirements matrix shows the SNT-TC-1A recommendations. On rotations, logging experience usually takes longer than the classroom part.

Do I need a licence for radiography in Alberta?

Yes, in effect. Gamma radiography is regulated federally by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. The employer holds the CNSC licence, and operators must be CNSC Certified Exposure Device Operators or trainees under direct supervision and continuous observation of one. X-ray equipment also falls under provincial radiation protection rules. Our RT course does not grant radiation certification.

What does NDT training cost in Fort McMurray?

Quote on request. It depends on the method, level, number of technicians, whether practicals run onsite, travel and site access, and whether Level III and written-practice work is included. We reply within one business day. Ask about onsite training for your Fort McMurray crew.

Can you run practicals at our site on a mine or plant lease?

Yes, subject to your site access, orientation and safety requirements, which we arrange with you in advance. Using your own equipment and representative specimens is usually the best option.

Which methods matter most for mining equipment?

MT and VT for surface cracks on frames, booms and welded repairs, plus UT for wall thickness and PAUT for larger components. Your maintenance programme decides the actual mix.

We are a contractor with a US parent. Do we need our own written practice?

If you certify technicians under SNT-TC-1A, yes. The employer needs its own written practice, even if it's based on the parent company's. We can write or adapt one. See written practice development.

Can I prepare for ASNT Level III from Fort McMurray?

Yes. Level III preparation is online and self-paced, so it works around rotations.

Does my SNT-TC-1A certification follow me to a new contractor?

Not automatically. The new employer certifies you under its own written practice, though your documented training and experience can count toward it.

Next step: plan training around your next turnaround, see all Atlantis NDT training, or request a written practice review.
