ASNT SNT-TC-1A training and certification for Canadian employers

Atlantis NDT trains NDT personnel to ASNT SNT-TC-1A and helps Canadian employers certify them under their own written practice. Courses are led by founder Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III in UT, RT, MT, PT and VT, and run year-round.

What Atlantis NDT provides

  • Level I and Level II training: ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level I and Level II courses in UT, RT, MT, PT and VT, plus PAUT and TOFD courses, for which conventional UT Level II or equivalent UT experience is recommended first. Course hours follow the SNT-TC-1A recommended classroom hours for each method and level.
  • Level III exam preparation: Preparation for the ASNT NDT Level III Basic and Method examinations, and for Level III examinations under an employer's written practice.
  • Employer certification under your written practice: As your outside-agency Level III, Atlantis NDT's ASNT NDT Level III administers and grades the general, specific and practical examinations in UT, RT, MT, PT and VT, and helps you document each technician's training, experience, vision and examination records so that you can certify them under your written practice.
  • Written practice: We write an SNT-TC-1A written practice for your company or review the one you have, so that your training, examinations and certification records follow it.
  • ASNT central certification: Exam preparation for candidates applying to ASNT for ASNT NDT Level II (MT, PT, RT, UT, VT) or ASNT NDT Level III, which ASNT examines and certifies.

Who certifies

  • Under SNT-TC-1A. Your employer certifies you, under its own written practice. The certification stays with that employer; a new employer recertifies you under its written practice.
  • Under ASNT central certification. ASNT examines and certifies you for ASNT NDT Level II or ASNT NDT Level III, and the certificate is yours.
  • Atlantis NDT. Trains you and, as your employer's outside-agency Level III, examines you and prepares the certification records. A course on its own never certifies anyone.

Who it is for

Employers whose customers, contracts or codes specify ASNT SNT-TC-1A or another employer-based scheme, for example:

  • Aerospace and aviation. MRO and manufacturing, where your customer or approval specifies an employer-based scheme such as SNT-TC-1A or NAS 410. Atlantis NDT trains and examines to SNT-TC-1A only and does not run NAS 410 training; NAS 410 Level 3 services are available through an associate who holds NAS 410 Level 3. Transport Canada's advisory circular for approved maintenance organizations lists NAS 410, ATA Specification 105 and CAN/CGSB-48.9712 among its recognized NDT trade standards and does not list SNT-TC-1A, so check your approval first: Transport Canada AC 573-003.
  • Maritime and shipbuilding. Shipyards, ship repair and marine service companies whose owner, contract or class requirements accept an SNT-TC-1A written practice.
  • Nuclear supply chain. Fabricators and service companies doing nuclear supply-chain and US-code work that specifies SNT-TC-1A. This is not a route into in-service inspection at Canadian CANDU stations, where the licensee's inspection program sets the certification its NDT personnel must hold.
  • Oil, gas and pipelines. Contractors and fabricators on US-owned or cross-border work, and crews that rotate between Canadian and US sites, where the client or code asks for SNT-TC-1A.

How the training runs

Courses run year-round and enrolment is open all year. Theory is online and primarily self-paced, with access from the moment you enrol and Level III support for questions. Practical training runs in the Practical NDT simulator and in person at your facility, where the practical examination is taken on real specimens. Atlantis NDT has no training centre in Canada.

Ask about ASNT SNT-TC-1A training in Canada: tell us the methods, levels and number of technicians, and the scheme your customer or contract names.

If your job specifies CAN/CGSB-48.9712

CAN/CGSB-48.9712, an identical adoption of ISO 9712, is Canada's national standard for NDT personnel certification and a third-party scheme. A job that specifies it needs a certificate from the Natural Resources Canada NDT Certification Body (NRCan NDTCB) or CWB Group, and method training from one of their Recognized Training Organizations (RTOs). Check the job posting, contract or client specification before you choose a course.

Atlantis NDT is not an RTO. Atlantis NDT is not a Recognized Training Organization for NRCan or CWB Group. Our courses do not count toward NRCan or CWB certification, so take CAN/CGSB-48.9712 method training with an RTO.

NRCan or CWB Group. CWB Group states there is no difference in validity, recognition or technical requirements between the two. The NRCan NDTCB requires at least 40% of course time to be practical. NRCan written exams are taken in person at its Authorized Examination Centres; CWB Group offers remote invigilation of written exams.

The CGSB has closed. The Canadian General Standards Board ceased operations on April 1, 2026. It published the standard; it did not issue certificates. CAN/CGSB-48.9712 remains valid through its current cycle, and NRCan says its certification services continue without change.

Level 3 study support. NRCan allows CAN/CGSB-48.9712 Level 3 preparation by courses or by self-study, provided the candidate gives documentary evidence of training acceptable to the NDTCB. The NDTCB decides what it accepts, so confirm with it before you rely on our study support: ask about Level 3 study support.

NDT training in Calgary: how it works for Calgary employers and technicians

Short answer: Atlantis NDT delivers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT training for Calgary employers and technicians. Theory is online and primarily self-paced, and practicals run onsite at your facility. Level I, II and III courses cover UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET under ASNT Level III oversight. It fits Calgary companies whose clients, contracts or codes call for SNT-TC-1A, which usually means US-headquartered owners, cross-border work and US-code fabrication. It is not a substitute for Canada's national CAN/CGSB-48.9712 (ISO 9712) certification.

The distinction above is the most important thing on this page. In Canada, the national NDT personnel certification scheme is CAN/CGSB-48.9712, Canada's adoption of ISO 9712. It is a third-party, central certification administered federally. Many Alberta owners, inspection companies and regulators' customers expect technicians to hold it. SNT-TC-1A works differently. It is an employer-based system in which the employer's written practice governs training, experience and examinations, and the employer certifies its own people. Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A-based. We do not offer CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification, we do not claim that our training counts toward it, and we will not suggest that ASNT certification replaces it where a Canadian contract calls for CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification.

So who is this page for? Calgary is the head-office city of the Canadian energy industry, and much of the work its companies manage has a US side. There are US-owned operators and their Canadian subsidiaries, pipelines that cross the border, modules and pressure equipment fabricated in Alberta for US projects, and inspection companies that send crews south to US refineries and pipelines. Where the contract, the client's specification or a US code (ASME, API 1104, AWS) calls for SNT-TC-1A-qualified personnel, the employer needs a written practice and trained, examined technicians. That is the gap we fill.

As on every Atlantis city page, we are explicit: Atlantis has no training centre in Calgary. Theory is delivered online, primarily self-paced, and practical training and exams take place onsite at your facility under ASNT Level III oversight. If you need that for your team, request a Calgary training quote. We reply within one business day.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in Calgary

All courses are built on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Recommended hours by method and level are in our training-requirements matrix. The employer's written practice sets the figures that actually apply. These hours are SNT-TC-1A figures and are not the same as CAN/CGSB-48.9712 requirements.

MethodLevelsWhat Calgary employers use it forPrerequisite
UT (ultrasonic)I, II, III prepThickness and corrosion surveys on gas-plant and in-situ oil-sands facility piping; weld examination on US-code pressure equipment and modules; pipeline integrity digsNone for Level I; Level I plus documented experience for Level II
PAUT (phased array)II, III prepEncoded girth-weld examination on pipeline construction, weld inspection on module and spool fabrication, corrosion mappingUT Level II or UT knowledge accepted by the written practice

ET (eddy current)I, II, III prepExchanger and air-cooler tubing at gas plants and in-situ facilities, surface crack detection through coatingsNone for Level I

UT. The course covers ultrasonic physics, calibration, straight-beam thickness and angle-beam weld technique, DAC and TCG, and interpretation against the acceptance criteria of US codes such as ASME Section VIII, B31.3 and API 1104. We also teach temperature effects on velocity and couplant, which matter both for hot in-service piping and for Alberta winter fieldwork.

PAUT and TOFD. These courses cover focal laws, encoded scanning, data analysis and TOFD sizing. Encoded UT is well established on Western Canadian pipeline construction and in module yards, so for a Calgary-based UT technician working on US-code scopes these are high-value additions.

RT. The course covers sources, exposure technique, image quality, and film and digital interpretation of welds. The legal side of radiography in Canada is federal and quite different from the US. It is explained below.

MT and PT. These cover magnetisation methods, wet fluorescent and visible particles, demagnetisation, penetrant methods and dwell times, and interpretation. The courses also cover temperature limits for penetrant procedures and how procedures are qualified for conditions outside them, which is a practical concern in Alberta.

VT. The course covers visual acuity, lighting, gauges and acceptance criteria. Module and spool fabrication for US projects relies on consistent, well-documented weld visual inspection before any volumetric NDT.

ET. The course covers impedance-plane analysis, probe and frequency selection, and tube inspection. Gas plants and in-situ facilities have large exchanger and air-cooler populations.

Level III. Senior technicians who will own SNT-TC-1A written practices for Canadian companies working to US requirements can prepare through our ASNT Level III programme. ASNT administers the Level III exams.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Calgary, step by step

  1. Confirm which scheme the work requires. Before anything else, check the contract, client specification or code. If it calls for CAN/CGSB-48.9712, that is a separate national certification with its own requirements. If it calls for SNT-TC-1A, continue with the steps below.
  2. Adopt or update the employer's written practice. The written practice sets training hours, experience, exams, grading and recertification. Many Canadian companies need to create one specifically for their US-code work.
  3. Complete formal training. Classroom hours for the method and level, online or onsite. Compare the training-requirements matrix with your written practice.
  4. Document on-the-job experience. Supervised experience in the method, logged and signed. Experience gained on CAN/CGSB-48.9712-certified work can often be documented for SNT-TC-1A purposes if the records are good enough, but the written practice decides.
  5. General exam. Written exam on the principles of the method, given under a Level III.
  6. Specific exam. Written exam on the employer's procedures, equipment and the US codes used on the work.
  7. Practical exam. Hands-on exam on specimens with real discontinuities, graded by a Level III.
  8. Vision exam. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast. Near vision is re-checked at least annually.
  9. Employer certification. Written certification by the employer, with the complete file kept for client audits.
  10. Recertification. Follows the written practice interval (SNT-TC-1A recommends a maximum of five years). Technicians who hold both CAN/CGSB-48.9712 and SNT-TC-1A certification need to track each scheme's renewal separately.

For the full framework, see SNT-TC-1A training and certification. For how the two approaches compare, see our ISO 9712 vs SNT-TC-1A comparison.

Online or onsite NDT training for Calgary crews

  • Online theory. Primarily self-paced online learning, so Calgary technicians can study from home, the office or a camp with reliable connectivity, with Level III support for course questions. See online NDT training.
  • Onsite at your facility. Practical training and exams at your Calgary shop, module yard or field facility, on your instruments and specimens representative of your US-code scope. This is the usual model for inspection companies and fabricators.
  • Blended. Online theory, then a concentrated onsite practical block.

Alberta's calendar matters. Pipeline construction and integrity digs follow seasonal windows, often shaped by ground conditions and spring road bans. Gas plants and oil-sands facilities run planned turnarounds that absorb inspection crews for weeks. Many fabrication yards are busiest when module deliveries are due. We schedule theory during quieter periods and hold practicals indoors when outdoor conditions rule them out. For larger or multi-site programmes, see corporate NDT training.

The practical exam is always hands-on. Ask about onsite training for your Calgary crew.

Where NDT technicians work in Calgary

Head offices and engineering. Calgary houses the head offices and engineering teams of many of Canada's producers, pipeline companies and midstream operators. They write integrity programmes, select inspection contractors and set qualification requirements. Much of the field work they manage happens elsewhere in Alberta and beyond, but technicians, Level IIIs and integrity specialists based in Calgary support it.

Pipelines. Alberta has a dense network of gathering, feeder and transmission pipelines. Pipelines within Alberta are regulated by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). Interprovincial and international pipelines fall under the federal Canada Energy Regulator (CER). Canadian pipelines are designed, built and maintained to CSA Z662, which has its own NDT and personnel provisions. Cross-border systems and US-owned assets may also apply API 1104 and US operator specifications. That is where SNT-TC-1A-qualified personnel are most often required.

Gas processing and in-situ oil sands. Sour-gas processing plants in the foothills and in-situ oil-sands facilities (SAGD) in northeast Alberta are inspected throughout their lives: UT thickness and corrosion mapping, PT on alloy piping, ET on exchangers, and MT and VT on structures and welds.

Pressure equipment. In Alberta, boilers and pressure vessels come under the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA), which administers the province's pressure-equipment safety legislation, design registration and owner-user programmes. Equipment is registered to CSA B51, and construction is typically to ASME codes. ABSA's requirements are about equipment and quality programmes. They do not decide which NDT personnel scheme applies to your technicians. That comes from the contract, the code edition and the quality programme.

Module and spool fabrication. Alberta's fabrication shops and module yards, in Calgary's industrial districts and along the Edmonton corridor, build piping spools, pressure vessels and process modules for Canadian and US projects. Structural welding in Canada follows CSA W59 and Canadian Welding Bureau certification for fabricators. When products are built to ASME for US installation, clients often require NDE personnel qualified to SNT-TC-1A written practices, which is where our training and written-practice work fits.

Power and aviation. Gas-fired generating stations in and around Calgary need outage NDT on high-energy piping, boilers and heat-recovery steam generators. Aircraft maintenance at Calgary International Airport is governed by Transport Canada, and aviation NDT follows the aviation sector's own qualification requirements, not general industrial practice.

Radiography licensing in Canada. Radiography regulation in Canada is federal. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) licenses companies that possess and use exposure devices (gamma cameras). Anyone operating an exposure device must be a CNSC-certified exposure device operator (EDO) or work under the direct supervision of one. EDO certification involves a recognised vocational training course, supervised on-the-job training with a licensed company, and written and practical exams, as set out by the CNSC. Atlantis does not provide EDO training. Neither SNT-TC-1A RT certification nor CAN/CGSB-48.9712 RT certification authorises anyone to operate a camera. They cover technique and interpretation, and EDO certification is a separate legal requirement.

What Calgary employers ask for. For most purely Canadian work, postings ask for CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification in the relevant method, plus EDO certification for radiography. For US-connected work (US clients, cross-border pipelines, ASME fabrication for export, or crews travelling to US sites) they also ask for SNT-TC-1A Level II in UT, PAUT, MT, PT or RT. Some roles also list API 510, 570 or 653 inspector certifications or CWB inspector qualifications. Those are separate schemes that Atlantis does not train. For pay information, see our NDT salary guide.

Level III services and written practices for Calgary NDT companies

Canadian inspection companies and fabricators often run into SNT-TC-1A for the first time when they win a US-client contract or a US-code fabrication order. Their technicians may hold CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification, but the client's specification asks for a written practice, SNT-TC-1A certification records and Level III approval of procedures. Atlantis supports these companies with the following:

  • Written-practice development. An SNT-TC-1A written practice for the methods and levels needed on the US-code scope, drafted so it sits alongside your existing CAN/CGSB-48.9712 arrangements. See NDT written practice development.
  • Outsourced ASNT Level III. Exam administration, procedure and technique approval, and certification-file review to support client audits.
  • Dual-scheme record keeping. Advice on keeping CAN/CGSB-48.9712 and SNT-TC-1A records separate and consistent, so neither scheme's audit trail is compromised.
  • SNT-TC-1A guidance. SNT-TC-1A certification explains the employer-based model for Canadian managers used to central certification.

Book a Level III consultation and tell us the contract or code requirement you need to meet, the methods and the number of technicians.

Practise before the practical exam

The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees practise 12 method families in 12 workplaces, including an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. For Calgary technicians, the oil and gas site, workshop and tank scenarios are closest to daily work. The simulator is useful for rehearsing set-ups and indication recognition between sessions.

It is a practice tool only. It does not replace hands-on training on real instruments, the practical exam on real specimens, or any CAN/CGSB-48.9712 or CNSC requirement.

Your instructor

Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who oversees course content, exams and practical assessments. Onsite programmes for Calgary employers run under that ASNT Level III oversight.

Frequently asked questions about NDT training in Calgary

How do I get NDT certified in Calgary?

It depends on the scheme your employer or client needs. For Canadian national certification, the route is CAN/CGSB-48.9712, which Atlantis does not provide. For SNT-TC-1A, which is used on US-connected work, your employer certifies you after formal training, documented experience, general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and a vision test. Atlantis provides that training and the written-practice support.

Is ASNT certification recognised in Alberta?

It is accepted where the contract, client or code calls for it, which is common for US-owned operators, cross-border projects and ASME fabrication for US installation. For much purely Canadian work, employers and owners expect CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification. Check what your target employer requires before you train.

Does Atlantis training count toward CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification?

We do not claim it does. CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification has its own training, experience and examination requirements administered through the national scheme. Our training is SNT-TC-1A-based.

Can I take NDT training online in Alberta?

Yes, for theory. It is primarily self-paced, so it fits around your shifts. Practical training and exams must be done hands-on, onsite at your employer's facility. See online NDT training.

How long does UT Level 2 training take?

Under SNT-TC-1A, it depends on your employer's written practice and your starting point. Recommended minimum training and experience hours are in our training-requirements matrix. CAN/CGSB-48.9712 requirements are separate and different.

Do I need a licence for radiography in Alberta?

Yes, federally. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission licenses companies using exposure devices, and anyone operating one must be a CNSC-certified exposure device operator or work under the direct supervision of one. SNT-TC-1A or CAN/CGSB-48.9712 RT certification covers technique and interpretation only.

What does NDT training cost in Calgary?

We do not publish prices. The cost depends on method, level, group size and whether delivery is online, onsite or blended. We reply within one business day. Request a Calgary training quote.

I want to work on US jobs from Calgary. What do I need?

Most US employers and clients expect SNT-TC-1A certification under their written practice, plus any site or pipeline-specific requirements. Work authorisation for the US is a separate matter entirely. Training in the method gives you the technical foundation.

Can a technician hold both CAN/CGSB-48.9712 and SNT-TC-1A certification?

Yes. Many Canadian technicians working cross-border hold both. The two schemes keep separate records and renew on separate schedules.

Can you train our crew onsite in Calgary?

Yes. Onsite delivery at your facility is our standard model for crews. Ask about onsite training for your Calgary crew.

We need an SNT-TC-1A written practice for a US contract. Can you help?

Yes. We develop SNT-TC-1A written practices and provide outsourced ASNT Level III services. See written practice development.

How should I prepare for the practical exam?

Study the method theory, use mock exams such as our UT Level 2 practice questions, and rehearse on the Practical NDT simulator before the hands-on practical.

Calgary is the headquarters city of Canada's oil patch — Suncor Energy, Cenovus, Canadian Natural Resources (CNRL), Imperial Oil, Enbridge, TC Energy, Pembina Pipeline. The corridor north into Edmonton and Fort McMurray runs continuous pipeline integrity and oil-sands NDT work that draws crews from across Western Canada.

Most Alberta work asks for CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification (Canada's adoption of ISO 9712), issued by the Natural Resources Canada NDT Certification Body (NDTCB) or CWB Group; the Canadian General Standards Board only published the standard. ASNT SNT-TC-1A is used by employers that run an ASNT written practice, often US-owned operators and contractors, and by cross-border crews. Employer examinations (general, specific and practical) are administered by an ASNT Level III under your written practice; ASNT's own central examinations are booked through ASNT's testing arrangements, not through Atlantis.

What drives NDT training demand in Calgary

Calgary is the head-office and engineering centre of the Canadian energy industry — pipeline integrity programmes for continental systems are run from here, with in-situ oil sands support, gas processing across the foothills, and a strong module fabrication sector. Every one of those assets is examined on intervals set by code, and the examinations must be performed by certified personnel — which is what creates continuous local demand for qualified technicians, and continuous pressure on employers to develop them.

Which methods to train first in this market

Training investment should follow the local work. In Calgary that means RT to API 1104, AUT/PAUT for girth welds, and MT at dig sites; in the refining sector, UT thickness and corrosion monitoring, phased array on welds, and API-track inspection knowledge; and where power work features, UT including phased array on rotors and headers, MT during outages, and eddy current on condenser tubing. A candidate who certifies against what local employers actually examine is employable months sooner than one who spreads across every method thinly.

Which certification scheme employers here expect

Alberta work runs under ABSA on CSA B51-registered equipment, with CAN/CGSB-48.9712 certification, issued by NRCan or CWB Group, the usual Canadian personnel credential; pipeline programmes answer to CER or AER regulation, and winter construction seasons drive scheduling in ways southern markets never see.

For a candidate this decides the route before any course is booked: train toward the scheme your target employers name in their contracts. In Canada the central scheme is CAN/CGSB-48.9712: the certificate is issued by NRCan or CWB Group, travels with you between employers, and needs method training from a Recognized Training Organization, which Atlantis is not. SNT-TC-1A is the employer-based route used by US-owned employers and cross-border crews. How ASNT certification works · ISO 9712 vs SNT-TC-1A.

Levels, honestly explained

Level I performs calibrations and examinations under supervision — the entry point, usually reached in one method first. Level II sets up, interprets against the code and signs the report; it is the level contracts in Calgary actually specify. Level III writes and approves procedures and qualifies the Level I/IIs — the level a growing inspection function eventually needs to own or engage. Progression is training hours plus documented experience hours, so anyone already working under supervision moves faster than a cold start.

How Atlantis delivers training for Calgary

We are straightforward about the model: Atlantis does not run a walk-in training centre in Calgary. Corporate programmes are delivered on-site at your facility — usually the better arrangement for a team, since practical specimens can match the transmission pipelines and pump stations your people will actually examine — and individuals enrol online at any time of year: theory is primarily self-paced, practice runs in the Practical NDT simulator, and the supervised practical takes place at the employer's facility. Tell us headcount and timeline and we will say plainly which route fits, including when a local provider is honestly the better answer for a single candidate.

Frequently asked questions

Can our company get a whole crew certified in Calgary?

Yes — that is the core corporate model: theory and practical delivered at your site around your shift pattern, examinations administered under a compliant Written Practice, and the certification records handed over in a form that survives an audit. Multi-method programmes are sequenced so the crew keeps working while it qualifies.

Do you prepare candidates for the schemes named in local contracts?

We train and examine to ASNT SNT-TC-1A only. Where a contract names CAN/CGSB-48.9712, the certificate comes from NRCan or CWB Group and the method training must come from one of their Recognized Training Organizations, so our courses do not count toward it. We can support Level 3 candidates with study material, but the NDTCB decides what training evidence it accepts.
