NDT Inspection Services in Calgary
In brief: Atlantis NDT carries out non-destructive testing for owners, fabricators and contractors in Calgary and southern Alberta: ultrasonic thickness and corrosion mapping, phased array (PAUT) and TOFD weld examination, magnetic particle, penetrant, visual and eddy current testing, PMI and hardness testing, and radiography through licensed radiography arrangements confirmed for each job. Crews are mobilised to your shop, plant or right-of-way, procedures are approved by an ASNT NDT Level III, and every job ends in a code-referenced digital report. Atlantis is Houston-based and has no office or yard in Calgary.
Calgary is a different inspection market from Edmonton or Fort McMurray because it is where much of Canada's oil and gas industry is managed. Suncor, Cenovus, Canadian Natural, Imperial, TC Energy, Enbridge and Pembina all have their head offices here, alongside engineering firms, fabricators and packagers. Inspection specifications and vendor prequalification are often written in Calgary offices, while the equipment sits in the oil sands, the Industrial Heartland, the foothills and along pipelines. A Calgary request can be a shop job near the Deerfoot or a turnaround scope a day's drive north. This page covers both. For the whole province, see NDT inspection services in Alberta, or send us your Calgary inspection request now.
Where inspection work is for Calgary owners and contractors
Direct answer: Inside the city, demand comes from fabrication and packaging shops, the power station and rail shops in the southeast, water and wastewater plants and the airport. Beyond the city limits, Calgary-managed assets include sour gas plants in the foothills, pipelines and compressor stations, the oil sands around Fort McMurray and Cold Lake, and the refineries and petrochemical plants northeast of Edmonton.
Fabrication, packaging and module shops
Calgary's industrial districts hold shops that build compressor packages, process skids, separators, treaters, pressure vessels and pipe spools for gas plants and pipelines across Western Canada. This is new-construction NDE: radiography or ultrasonic examination of butt welds to ASME Section VIII or ASME B31.3 as referenced through CSA B51, magnetic particle or penetrant testing of nozzle and attachment welds, positive material identification on alloy parts, and hardness testing of sour-service welds against the purchaser's limits. Skid frames and structural steel are welded by companies certified to CSA W47.1 and inspected to CSA W59. When a large order lands, contract NDE crews and technical staffing cover the peak without a permanent hire. For buyer-side verification, see third-party inspection in Calgary.
Southeast Calgary: power, rail and utilities
The gas-fired Shepard Energy Centre on the city's southeast edge runs heat recovery steam generators, high-energy steam piping and balance-of-plant vessels that are opened during planned outages. CPKC is headquartered in Calgary and runs its Ogden shops and Alyth yard here, where axles, wheels, couplers and welded frames are routine MT, UT and visual subjects. The Bonnybrook wastewater treatment plant and the city's water plants add digesters, tanks, piping and structural steel. East of the city, Nutrien's nitrogen operation at Carseland adds ammonia and urea plant vessels and piping, where ammonia stress corrosion cracking shapes the inspection plan.
Foothills gas plants, pipelines and compressor stations
West and south of Calgary, the foothills hold long-established sour gas processing plants, and gathering systems, transmission lines and compressor stations radiate across the province. Sour service drives the inspection pattern: wet H2S cracking and hydrogen blistering in inlet separators, contactors and flash tanks, amine cracking in regenerators, CO2 corrosion in wet gas lines, and vibration fatigue at small-bore connections on reciprocating compressors. Automated UT corrosion mapping finds blistering, PAUT and TOFD find and size weld cracking, wet fluorescent MT is used inside vessels during entries, and UT thickness at condition monitoring locations tracks wall loss. Pipelines inside Alberta are regulated by the Alberta Energy Regulator; interprovincial and international lines by the Canada Energy Regulator.
Field sites managed from Calgary offices
Many Calgary contracts are for distant sites: oil sands mines, upgraders and in-situ steam plants around Fort McMurray and Cold Lake, refineries and petrochemical plants in the Industrial Heartland, Montney gas plants around Grande Prairie and the crude storage hub at Hardisty. See third-party inspection in Fort McMurray and third-party inspection in Edmonton. Site orientations, access testing and owner prequalification usually drive mobilisation lead time more than distance does.

Shop work and field work are two different jobs
Direct answer: In a Calgary shop, NDT verifies new welds against the construction code and the purchaser's specification before the item ships. In the field, NDT measures how equipment has changed in service, and the results feed an inspection programme run under ABSA requirements. Procedures, acceptance criteria and paperwork differ, so say which one you need.
For shop work, agree the code edition, the ABSA design registration status of the item, the weld map, the extent of examination, acceptance criteria and hold points before fabrication starts. Where the code and purchaser allow it, PAUT can replace radiography on butt welds, removing exclusion zones from a busy shop floor and leaving a reviewable data file. A shop report proves acceptance; a field report has to be comparable with the last survey. For new plants and tie-ins, see commissioning inspection.
API 510, 570 and 653 NDE support for Calgary-managed assets
Direct answer: In Alberta, in-service pressure equipment inspection follows ABSA requirements, chiefly AB-506, which references API 510 and API 570. The inspection is certified by an In-Service Pressure Equipment Inspector working under an owner-user's or integrity assessment organisation's ABSA-accepted quality system, or by an ABSA Safety Codes Officer. Atlantis performs the NDE and data review for the owner's programme. Atlantis is not an API Authorized Inspector or Authorized Inspection Agency, does not supply API-certified inspectors, and never signs as inspector of record.
Vessels and piping. Separators, contactors, regenerators, drums and exchangers are surveyed at their CMLs with UT, examined at nozzles and attachments with MT or PT during entries, and scanned with PAUT or TOFD where sour, amine or cyclic service makes cracking credible. Plant piping circuits are surveyed to your isometrics, with extra scanning at injection points, deadlegs and soil-to-air interfaces where the plan calls for it. Readings are reported beside the previous survey so the inspector can calculate corrosion rates. See API 510 support in Alberta and API 570 support in Alberta.
Storage tanks. Atmospheric tanks are not pressure equipment, so they sit outside ABSA's in-service regime and are inspected through owner programmes built on API 653 and the fire, environmental and energy-regulator rules that apply to the site. We perform floor scanning with UT prove-up, shell thickness, weld examination and settlement readings for the owner's API 653 inspector. See API 653 tank inspection support in Alberta. Atlantis does not provide fitness-for-service or risk-based inspection assessments; those remain with the owner's engineers.
Turnarounds, outages and Calgary's climate
Direct answer: Alberta's turnaround calendar clusters in spring and autumn, when several large sites can be down at once and experienced NDT technicians are hardest to find. Calgary's chinooks add a local corrosion factor: mid-winter warm spells followed by hard freezes cycle moisture into damaged insulation and coatings. Plan the NDE scope early and move on-stream work out of the outage window.
Repeated wetting and freezing of insulation, frost damage to jacketing and condensation inside cladding are the conditions that drive corrosion under insulation, so CUI programmes here should prioritise low points, supports, penetrations and damaged jacketing; pulsed eddy current can screen insulated lines before deciding where to strip. See CUI inspection. Deep cold also changes how NDT is done: couplants thicken, batteries drain, and standard penetrant procedures are qualified for a limited temperature range, so work outside it needs a qualified low-temperature procedure or heated hoarding. Spring thaw brings seasonal road bans on many secondary highways, which restrict heavy equipment moves to field sites. For outage planning, see turnaround and shutdown inspection, or plan an Alberta turnaround NDT scope with us.
Regulations and codes that shape inspection in Calgary
Direct answer: ABSA administers pressure equipment safety in Alberta; the Alberta Energy Regulator regulates energy development, including provincially regulated pipelines; the Canada Energy Regulator covers interprovincial and international pipelines; and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission licenses the nuclear substances used in gamma radiography. CSA B51, CSA Z662, CSA W59 and CSA W47.1 are the Canadian codes most often cited in Calgary contracts.
ABSA and pressure equipment
ABSA, the pressure equipment safety authority, delivers Alberta's pressure equipment safety programme as a delegated administrative organisation under the Safety Codes Act and the Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation. Owner-users run integrity management systems under AB-512, in-service inspection and servicing follows AB-506, and in-service inspectors are certified under AB-526. In October 2025 ABSA, Saskatchewan's TSASK and Manitoba's Inspection and Technical Services issued AB-512H, harmonised requirements for pressure equipment integrity management systems. Background: ABSA compliance and ABSA in-service inspector certification.
Pipelines: AER and CER
Pipelines that stay inside Alberta are licensed and regulated by the Alberta Energy Regulator, with CSA Z662 as the technical basis. Interprovincial and international lines fall under the Canada Energy Regulator, whose Onshore Pipeline Regulations require design, construction and operation to CSA Z662, radiographic or ultrasonic examination of the full circumference of each weld joint, and an integrity management programme. See pipeline inspection services and the pipeline digital twin for Calgary operators.
Radiography: CNSC and provincial X-ray rules
Gamma radiography uses nuclear substances licensed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and exposure devices must be operated by CNSC-certified exposure device operators or by trainees under their direct supervision. Industrial X-ray equipment is a provincial matter. Atlantis does not claim to hold a CNSC licence; the licensed radiography arrangements for each Calgary job are confirmed at quotation, and PAUT or TOFD can be proposed where an exclusion zone would disrupt a running plant and the code allows it.
Personnel certification: CGSB, SNT-TC-1A and what your job requires
Direct answer: Many Canadian codes, regulators, owners and CSA W59 projects require NDT personnel certified to CAN/CGSB-48.9712 (ISO 9712), issued in Canada by Natural Resources Canada's NDT Certification Body and, for some methods, by CWB Group. Atlantis's own programme is employer certification under ASNT SNT-TC-1A with an ASNT NDT Level III. The certification scheme your job requires is confirmed at quotation, and if part of a scope cannot be staffed to that scheme, we say so before you award it.
The Canadian General Standards Board ceased operations on 1 April 2026. Natural Resources Canada has stated that its certification services continue without interruption and that CAN/CGSB-48.9712 remains valid while custody of the standard moves to its CanmetMATERIALS laboratory. For in-service equipment, ABSA's AB-506 sets out what owners must require of contract NDE examiners by method; our Alberta API 510 page walks through it. Atlantis does not train, examine or certify personnel to CAN/CGSB-48.9712 or ISO 9712, and never presents SNT-TC-1A certification as CGSB certification.
What a Calgary inspection report includes
Direct answer: Each job ends with a digital report reviewed under ASNT Level III oversight, in which every reading, indication and photograph is tied to the asset, location, procedure, acceptance criterion, technician certification and instrument calibration.
- Asset, CML and weld identifiers that match your inspection data system.
- Procedure and revision, coverage, and areas not examined with the reason.
- Acceptance criteria quoted from the governing code, with previous readings beside current ones for in-service surveys.
- Technician names, certification scheme and level, and calibration records.
Findings that need attention go to your representative during the shift. Reports are built on our own platform; see NDT inspection software and NDT reporting in Calgary. Calgary inspection companies can run their own jobs and certifications in Atlantis ERP, and owners can place results on a digital twin for Calgary assets.

Frequently asked questions about NDT inspection in Calgary
Does Atlantis have an office or yard in Calgary?
No. Atlantis is based in Houston, with an office in Hyderabad, India. Crews are mobilised to your Calgary shop or to field sites across Alberta, with dates agreed during scoping.
Are your technicians certified to CAN/CGSB-48.9712?
Atlantis's programme is ASNT SNT-TC-1A employer certification under an ASNT NDT Level III. Where your code, ABSA requirement or owner specification calls for CAN/CGSB-48.9712, the certification of the assigned technicians is confirmed at quotation, and we tell you plainly if part of the scope cannot be staffed to that scheme.
Who signs in-service pressure vessel inspections in Alberta?
An In-Service Pressure Equipment Inspector certified under ABSA's AB-526 and working under an accepted owner-user or integrity assessment organisation quality system, or an ABSA Safety Codes Officer. Atlantis performs the NDE that inspection relies on and does not sign as inspector of record.
Who licenses industrial radiography in Calgary?
Gamma radiography sources are licensed federally by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and operators must be CNSC-certified exposure device operators or trainees under their direct supervision. X-ray equipment falls under provincial rules. The radiography arrangements for each job are confirmed at quotation.
Can you inspect outdoors in a Calgary winter?
Yes, with planning. Cold affects couplants, batteries and penetrant temperature limits, so some work needs heated hoarding or procedures qualified for low temperatures. Where possible we move on-stream surveys into milder months ahead of an outage.
Do you provide API 579 fitness-for-service or RBI studies?
No. Atlantis does not provide fitness-for-service or risk-based inspection assessments. We supply the thickness, mapping and flaw-sizing data that the owner's engineers use.
How is NDT inspection priced in Calgary?
Atlantis quotes per scope and has no published prices. Cost depends on method, quantities, access, site requirements, travel to Alberta, crew size, schedule, cold-weather protection and report format.
