NDT Training and Certification in Louisiana
Short answer: Louisiana technicians and employers can get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III training from Atlantis NDT as live online classes, a private live-virtual cohort, or onsite delivery at the employer's plant, yard or shop anywhere in the state. An ASNT NDT Level III leads every programme, practical exams are held on real specimens at your facility, and the employer certifies under its own written practice.
Louisiana packs an enormous amount of inspection work into a small footprint. The Mississippi River corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is lined with refineries and chemical plants; the Lake Charles area has become one of the world's busiest LNG and petrochemical construction zones; the bayou parishes around Houma, Morgan City and Lafayette build and service the offshore fleet; and the north of the state adds a major air force base and the Haynesville gas play. This hub explains where Louisiana NDT technicians work, which methods each area needs, what the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality expects from radiography crews, and how to train a crew without losing people during a turnaround. Where NDT technicians work in Louisiana
Direct answer: Louisiana NDT work clusters in four areas: the River Parishes refining and chemical corridor from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, the Lake Charles and Cameron Parish LNG and petrochemical belt, the Acadiana and bayou region of Lafayette, Houma and Morgan City serving offshore oil and gas and shipbuilding, and north Louisiana around Shreveport and Monroe. Refinery and plant maintenance drives the most hours.
Baton Rouge and the River Parishes
The "chemical corridor" along the Mississippi from Baton Rouge to the outskirts of New Orleans is home to ExxonMobil's Baton Rouge refinery and chemical plant, Marathon's Garyville refinery, the Norco and St. Charles refining and chemical complexes, the Chalmette refinery and many large chemical, fertiliser and plastics plants in Ascension, Iberville, St. James, St. John and St. Charles parishes. Process safety management rules keep a steady base of mechanical-integrity inspection on piping, vessels, exchangers and tanks, and planned turnarounds swell crews several times a year. Demand is broad: UT thickness and shear wave, PAUT for weld and corrosion mapping, radiography of process piping, MT and PT on welds and rotating equipment, ET on exchanger tubes, and VT throughout. Two nuclear stations, River Bend near St. Francisville and Waterford 3 at Killona, add outage work under ASME Section XI.
Lake Charles, Westlake and Cameron Parish
Southwest Louisiana combines established refining and chemicals (the Citgo and Phillips 66 refineries and a dense chemical cluster in Westlake and Sulphur) with a wave of LNG export terminals along the Calcasieu Ship Channel and the coast, including Cameron LNG, Sabine Pass LNG and Calcasieu Pass. LNG construction and expansion bring huge weld-inspection volumes on stainless, nickel-alloy and carbon steel piping, storage tanks and modules, so penetrant, radiography, PAUT and TOFD technicians are in steady demand. Hurricane recovery work in this region has also kept structural and tank inspection busy.
Acadiana and the bayou parishes: Lafayette, New Iberia, Houma and Morgan City
Lafayette has long been the service and engineering base for Gulf of Mexico oil and gas, while Houma, Morgan City and the Port Fourchon area host offshore fabrication yards, shipyards and marine service companies. Shipbuilders and repair yards in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes build workboats, offshore supply vessels and government vessels, and fabrication yards build jackets, decks and modules. Work here is structural weld inspection to AWS D1.1 and class-society rules, UT and MT on heavy plate, drill-pipe and tubular inspection for oilfield-service companies, and corrosion inspection of marine assets.
New Orleans and the lower river
New Orleans adds port and marine work along the river, NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility (where large launch-vehicle structures are built), shipyards and repair yards, and the refining and chemical plants at Chalmette, Belle Chasse and Plaquemines Parish, where the Plaquemines LNG export project is a major construction site. Bridges, flood-control structures and the river's industrial docks add civil and structural inspection.
North Louisiana: Shreveport, Bossier City and Monroe
Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City is home to B-52 bomber operations, and its maintenance work draws on eddy current, penetrant and magnetic particle methods. The Haynesville shale gas play around Shreveport supports pipeline construction, gathering systems and gas processing, which need radiography and UT. Monroe and the I-20 corridor add paper mills, chemical plants and fabrication shops.

NDT training by city in Louisiana
Direct answer: Atlantis NDT has dedicated pages for Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Lake Charles, plus a Gulf Coast regional page. None is a physical centre: each explains local demand and how we deliver online or onsite at your Louisiana facility. Other industrial towns are covered below.
| City or region | Main NDT sectors | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Baton Rouge | Refining, chemicals, River Parishes contractors, nuclear outages | NDT training Baton Rouge |
| New Orleans | Port, shipyards, aerospace manufacturing, refining | NDT training New Orleans |
| Lake Charles | LNG, refining, petrochemical construction | NDT training Lake Charles |
| Gulf Coast region | Texas and Louisiana coastal industry | NDT training Gulf Coast |
| Lafayette | Oilfield service, offshore engineering | Practical NDT Lafayette |
| Houma | Shipyards, offshore fabrication | Practical NDT Houma |
| Shreveport | Air base maintenance, Haynesville pipelines | Practical NDT Shreveport |
Baton Rouge. The capital is the hub for contractors serving the River Parishes. Most training requests are for Level I and II UT and RT, upgrades to PAUT, and ET for exchanger work, with a strong employer-side interest in written practices because plant owners audit contractor certification files closely. Training tends to be booked in the weeks before a major turnaround so new hires arrive certified.
New Orleans. Employers in the New Orleans area are more varied: shipyards, marine contractors, aerospace manufacturing at Michoud, refineries on the lower river and civil work on bridges and flood structures. That mix means MT, UT and VT for structural welds, PT for aerospace and stainless work, and RT for piping.
Lake Charles. Southwest Louisiana's LNG build-out creates intense short-term demand for weld inspectors, so contractors ask for fast, well-documented Level II programmes in RT, PT, PAUT and TOFD. A private live-virtual cohort followed by an onsite practical block at the contractor's yard is the format that most often fits the construction schedule.
Lafayette, Houma and Morgan City. Oilfield-service companies and fabrication yards need UT, MT and VT technicians for structural and tubular inspection. Crews rotate offshore, so the theory part is usually delivered live online between hitches.
Shreveport and Monroe. North Louisiana employers combine aerospace maintenance, pipeline work in the Haynesville and paper-mill and chemical-plant maintenance, so ET, PT, RT and UT all appear on training requests.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in Louisiana, step by step
Direct answer: NDT certification in Louisiana is employer-based under ASNT SNT-TC-1A. The employer's written practice sets requirements; you complete classroom training and supervised experience; a Level III administers general, specific and practical exams; you pass a vision test; and the employer certifies you. Radiographers also need state radiation-safety credentials from LDEQ.
- Written practice. Your employer adopts a written practice based on SNT-TC-1A or CP-189. If it needs writing or updating, see written practice development.
- Classroom training. You complete the formal hours the written practice requires for each method and level, documented with course records.
- Supervised experience. You build on-the-job hours in the method. The training requirements matrix shows typical figures so you can plan.
- General and specific exams. Written exams on theory and on your employer's procedures and codes, such as ASME V, B31.3, API 1104 or AWS D1.1.
- Practical exam. Hands-on testing on flawed specimens, graded by a Level III. In Louisiana we run this at your facility with your equipment.
- Vision examination. Near-vision and colour-contrast checks at the interval in the written practice.
- Certification and recertification. The employer certifies and later recertifies you. See Level II recertification.
In Louisiana, technicians often move between contractors from one plant turnaround to the next. Each new employer has to recertify you under its own written practice, so keep copies of your course records, experience logs and exam results. More on the framework: SNT-TC-1A training and certification.
Radiography licensing and other Louisiana requirements
Direct answer: Louisiana has been an NRC Agreement State since 1967. Industrial radiography is regulated by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) under LAC 33:XV, Chapter 5. Radiographers must carry a valid radiographer certification card, and trainees need LDEQ trainee status, in addition to their employer's SNT-TC-1A certification.
Louisiana is unusual in that its radiation programme sits in the environmental agency rather than the health department. LDEQ's radiation licensing staff certify industrial radiographers, trainees and instructors. Under the state rule, a person must complete radiation-safety instruction (the regulation refers to at least 40 hours on the subjects in Appendix A of Chapter 5) before acting as a radiographer, and trainee status is not valid until LDEQ issues confirmation and a trainee card, which must be carried during radiographic work. Radiographers must carry a valid certification card issued by LDEQ, another Agreement State, the NRC or ASNT's industrial radiography programme. Applications use LDEQ's industrial radiography certification form. Requirements are updated from time to time, so confirm details with LDEQ before planning a programme.
Atlantis NDT's RT courses cover radiographic technique, exposure, film and digital interpretation and code acceptance criteria for SNT-TC-1A. The state radiation-safety course and LDEQ certification are separate, managed by your radiation safety officer. We help employers schedule both so trainees are not waiting on one to finish the other.
Boilers and pressure vessels. Boiler inspection in Louisiana is handled by the Office of State Fire Marshal's boiler inspection section, working within the National Board framework. NDT technicians meet it on repairs and alterations to boilers and vessels under the National Board Inspection Code and ASME Sections I and VIII.
Pipelines. Intrastate pipeline safety is overseen by the state's Office of Conservation pipeline programme. In 2025 the parent agency, formerly the Department of Energy and Natural Resources, became the Department of Conservation and Energy, so confirm the current agency name on paperwork. PHMSA covers interstate lines. API 1104 governs most pipeline weld inspection.
Codes commonly used in Louisiana. ASME Section V, VIII and B31.3 in refineries and chemical plants; API 1104 on pipelines; AWS D1.1 for structural work in fabrication yards; class-society rules and US Coast Guard requirements in shipyards; ASME Section XI at River Bend and Waterford; and NAS 410 in aerospace work. Some owners also ask for API inspector credentials or AWS CWI for certain roles. Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A only, so we mention those schemes only as local context.
Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Louisiana
Direct answer: Louisiana technicians can take theory live online, join a private live-virtual cohort for their employer, or have an Atlantis Level III deliver the programme onsite at their plant, yard or shop. Atlantis has no training centre in Louisiana; practical exams are held at the client's facility on real specimens.
- Live online. Instructor-led theory classes, with attendance records, for individuals and spread-out crews, including offshore rotators who study between hitches. See online NDT training.
- Private live-virtual cohort. One employer's group, scheduled around shift and rotation patterns, with content mapped to that employer's written practice and procedures.
- Onsite. A Level III teaches the hands-on portion and runs practical exams at your facility in Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Houma or anywhere else in the state. See corporate NDT training.
The Louisiana calendar shapes scheduling. River Parishes and Lake Charles plants run spring and autumn turnarounds, LNG construction follows project milestones, offshore crews rotate on fixed hitches, and hurricane season from June to November can disrupt coastal plans at short notice. We usually suggest theory in the quieter windows and an onsite practical block that your operations team can protect. Ask about onsite training for your Louisiana crew.
For Louisiana employers: written practice and Level III services
Direct answer: Louisiana inspection contractors, fabrication yards, shipyards and plant owners use Atlantis NDT to write or update SNT-TC-1A written practices, provide outside Level III services, administer exams and train whole crews. Owner audits in the River Parishes and LNG projects check exactly these records.
Common gaps we find in growing Louisiana contractors include written practices that do not cover newer methods such as PAUT, no clear procedure for accepting experience from a previous employer, incomplete vision-test records, and practical exams that were not graded against a documented checklist. LNG project owners and EPCs typically review contractor NDT personnel files before mobilisation, so fixing these gaps before a bid saves time. We can review your documents, write or revise the written practice, build exam banks, and act as your examining Level III.

Practise before your practical exam
Direct answer: The Atlantis Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees rehearse 12 methods in five environments, including an oil and gas site, a storage tank, a welding workshop and an aircraft hangar. It is practice only and does not replace the practical exam on real specimens given by your Level III.
River Parishes and Lake Charles trainees get most from the oil and gas site and storage tank scenes, yard and shipyard trainees from the welding workshop, and north Louisiana aerospace trainees from the aircraft hangar. See Practical NDT and Practical NDT in Louisiana, with local pages for Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Lake Charles. For written exam practice, try the UT Level 2 practice questions.
Your instructor
Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He builds the course content, maps it to each employer's written practice and oversees examinations. On onsite programmes in Louisiana he works alongside your Level III or serves as the examining Level III if you do not have one.
