NDT Simulator and Hands-On Practice for Shreveport’s Haynesville Gas, Pipe and Aviation Crews
Shreveport-Bossier sits on top of one of the most important natural gas plays in North America. Since the Haynesville Shale took off in 2008, northwest Louisiana and East Texas have been covered with high-pressure wells, gathering lines, compressor stations, processing plants and large-diameter pipelines that carry gas toward the Gulf Coast and its LNG export terminals. At the Port of Caddo-Bossier, a seamless steel pipe mill makes tubulars for oil and gas exploration and transport. Across the Red River, Barksdale Air Force Base is home to B-52 bombers and Air Force Global Strike Command. A specialty refinery has run in the city for decades. Pipe, pressure and precision are the common threads, and all of them need qualified inspection. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and we call it Practical NDT. It is an immersive, game-like 3D platform you open in a browser or app. You handle virtual UT and phased array probes, guided wave collars, MFL and eddy current equipment, yokes and penetrant, inspect realistic welds, pipe, tanks, tubes and components, and get scored feedback on every job. It suits every skill level, from a new Shreveport technician on a pipeline spread to a Level III benchmarking a midstream integrity crew.
Why Hands-On NDT Practice Matters in Haynesville Country
Haynesville wells are deep, hot and high-pressure, and the infrastructure built around them is designed accordingly. Gathering lines and header systems carry gas at high pressure. Compressor stations run large reciprocating and centrifugal units with vibration-prone piping. Processing and treating plants remove water, carbon dioxide and other contaminants that can drive corrosion. New pipelines built to carry Haynesville gas south need girth weld inspection during construction and integrity inspection for the rest of their lives. Most of this work involves pipe: girth welds, fittings, branch connections, supports and long runs that are hard to reach. The skills that matter are weld inspection with UT, PAUT and RT, corrosion detection and mapping, and screening long runs of pipe with guided wave. These skills fade when they are not used, and midstream work is uneven. A technician may spend months on construction radiography and then be asked to run an LRUT screening programme or a PAUT corrosion map for an integrity dig. Realistic practice pieces are hard to find. Flawed pipe specimens with known defects are expensive, and live gas lines are never available for practice. Crews are also scattered across Caddo, Bossier, De Soto and Red River parishes and into East Texas. Practical NDT lets them practise pipe inspection in the evening at a motel in Mansfield or at home in Bossier City, without using a specimen or booking lab time.
The safety stakes are clear. A missed crack or area of wall loss on a high-pressure gas line can have serious consequences, and time spent in an open ditch, on a live station or near pressurised equipment carries its own risks. A technician who has already practised the scan plan and the likely indications works more efficiently and makes better calls. Practice does not replace site safety training, but it makes the inspection part of the job more reliable.
Matching Practical NDT Environments to Northwest Louisiana
Practical NDT has five workplace environments. For Shreveport, the Oil & Gas Site leads, with 73 jobs in a process plant setting covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice. It maps directly to compressor stations, gas processing plants, meter stations and the specialty refinery. The Welding Workshop has 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints and suits pipeline construction, station fabrication and the welding done in local shops. The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, which matches refinery tank farms, produced water and condensate storage, and terminals. The Aircraft Hangar has 54 jobs on airframe and component inspection. Barksdale’s bomber mission and the aviation maintenance around Shreveport Regional and Shreveport Downtown airports make it relevant here, especially for technicians with aviation backgrounds or veterans moving into civilian NDT careers. The NDT Lab has 52 bench jobs with specimens and reference blocks and is where every new technician should start. Most Shreveport midstream crews will focus on the Oil & Gas Site and Welding Workshop, with the Aircraft Hangar serving the region’s aviation workforce.
Methods You Can Practice: Ultrasonic Testing Simulator, Phased Array, LRUT and MFL
Practical NDT covers twelve methods, and pipe-heavy work uses most of them. Contact ultrasonic testing (UT) is the base skill. The ultrasonic testing simulator scenarios cover calibration, thickness readings on corroded pipe, and angle-beam inspection of girth and branch welds. Phased array UT (PAUT) is a phased array simulator for encoded girth weld inspection and corrosion mapping, where a scanned area produces a full wall-thickness map. Time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) builds skill in through-wall sizing on thicker welds. Radiography (RT) covers interpretation of weld images, which is still widely used on pipeline construction, with porosity, slag, incomplete penetration, lack of fusion, burn-through and cracks. Long-range guided wave UT (LRUT) is especially relevant in Haynesville country. From one probe collar position, it screens long runs of pipe for corrosion, including road crossings, casings, supports and insulated or buried sections that are hard to reach with conventional methods. Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is used for tank floor screening. Eddy current (ET) finds surface cracks on non-ferrous and coated components and is central to aviation inspection. The surface methods, magnetic particle (MT), penetrant (PT) and visual (VT), cover weld surfaces, fittings and fabricated parts. IRIS inspects heat-exchanger and boiler tubes from the inside for wall loss and pitting, which is useful at gas plants and the refinery. PMI verifies alloys on fittings, flanges and welds. Scenario defects include internal and external corrosion, pitting, wall loss, fatigue cracks, and a full range of weld flaws.
Built for Every Skill Level
Practical NDT adapts to the user. New trainees start with 33 guided lessons. These include people entering NDT from pipeline construction, welding, military maintenance or other trades. The lessons cover instrument basics, calibration, scanning, coverage and indication assessment one step at a time, with feedback at each step. Working technicians use the job library as a refresher, especially for techniques and defects they only meet occasionally. A construction radiographer can practise PAUT corrosion mapping before an integrity programme, a UT technician can learn LRUT screening before a station survey, and an aviation technician can refresh ET crack detection around fastener holes. Scoring shows where each attempt fell short. Level IIIs and team leads can build scenario sets, assign them across a crew, and compare results objectively. For a Shreveport inspection company running multiple spreads and station contracts, that is an efficient way to check readiness and spot gaps before crews go to work. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who leads Atlantis training, around the defects and geometries found in real pipeline, plant and aviation inspection.
NDT Practical Exam Preparation: How It Complements Formal ASNT Training
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It does not certify anyone, it does not grant any qualification, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens required under ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer’s written practice. Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer certifies its own personnel. The written practice sets training, experience and examinations, and the practical exam is done with real equipment on real test pieces. What the simulator adds is repetition. Candidates who have calibrated many times, scanned many welds and pipe sections, and learned from their misses come to that exam better prepared. For formal classroom and hands-on instruction, see Atlantis NDT training and certification. We run Level I and Level II programmes and support employers building SNT-TC-1A written practices. In the Shreveport market, pipeline operators may also require technicians to meet operator qualification rules under federal pipeline safety regulations, aviation employers may reference NAS 410, and plant owners may require API inspector credentials for their own staff. Those are local market requirements to be aware of. Atlantis frames its training around SNT-TC-1A and does not train toward or administer those other schemes.
The Shreveport-Bossier Industrial Picture: Gas, Pipe, Refining and Air Power
Shreveport grew up as a river and rail city, and oil arrived early. The Caddo Pine Island field north of the city was one of the first major oil fields in the region in the early twentieth century, and the area has been part of the energy industry ever since. The Haynesville Shale changed the scale. Starting in 2008, operators drilled thousands of deep, high-pressure gas wells across northwest Louisiana and East Texas. Midstream companies built gathering systems, treating plants, compressor stations and large-diameter pipelines, and more pipeline capacity has since been proposed and built to carry Haynesville gas to Gulf Coast LNG export terminals. Natural gas pipelines are regulated by the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, whose integrity management rules drive much of the inspection work on transmission lines. At the Port of Caddo-Bossier, on the Red River, the seamless steel pipe mill built in the last decade produces tubular products for oil and gas exploration and transport, and pipe mills themselves rely heavily on in-line ultrasonic and electromagnetic inspection. Shreveport’s specialty refinery adds plant inspection work: exchangers, vessels, piping and tanks. Barksdale Air Force Base, one of only two B-52 bases, anchors a large military and aviation workforce. Military aircraft NDT is carried out under Air Force programmes, but many veterans with aircraft maintenance and NDT experience stay in the area and move into civilian inspection. Bossier Parish Community College, Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College and LSU Shreveport supply technicians and engineers to regional employers. For NDT companies, the result is a market heavy in pipe and pressure work, with a strong aviation talent pool on the side.
Industrial radiography in Louisiana is regulated by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, which requires industrial radiographer certification based on approved classroom training, on-the-job training as a carded trainee, and examinations. Practical NDT’s RT scenarios build interpretation skill with no source and no exposure. They do not replace LDEQ-required training or certification.
NDT Training Online in Louisiana: Bringing Practical NDT to Your Shreveport Team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and it fits a workforce spread across pipeline spreads, stations and plants in the Ark-La-Tex. Technicians log in from a browser or app. There is nothing to ship and no lab to book. A typical Shreveport rollout starts with a demo. We walk your supervisor or Level III through the Oil & Gas Site, Welding Workshop, Storage Tank and Aircraft Hangar environments and the methods your contracts need, such as UT, PAUT and RT for girth welds, LRUT and PAUT corrosion mapping for integrity work, MFL and UT for tanks, and ET for aviation. We then help build scenario sets for new hires, experienced technicians and pre-job readiness checks. Scored results show where each person stands. Request a Practical NDT demo for your Shreveport team. Pricing is quote on request, and the platform is affordable, accessible and fully customizable. If your crew also needs formal Level I or Level II classes, ask about Atlantis NDT training, or ask about pipeline integrity scenario sets for midstream crews.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?
No. It is a practice and readiness tool. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you according to its written practice, which includes a practical exam on real specimens with real equipment. The simulator helps you prepare and stay sharp. It does not replace the exam and does not issue any certification.
What experience level is it for?
All levels. Trainees start with 33 guided lessons. Working technicians use the job library for refreshers and rare-defect practice between assignments. Level IIIs and team leads build and assign scenario sets and benchmark crews objectively.
Which methods matter most for Haynesville midstream work?
Contact UT and PAUT for girth welds and corrosion mapping, RT interpretation for construction welds, LRUT for screening long or hard-to-reach pipe runs, and MT, PT and VT for fittings and surfaces. At gas plants, add IRIS for exchanger tubes and PMI for alloy verification.
Is it useful for veterans moving from military aviation into civilian NDT?
Yes. Many people leaving Barksdale bring strong maintenance and inspection habits. The Aircraft Hangar environment keeps ET and surface skills sharp, while the Oil & Gas Site and Welding Workshop introduce the pipe and weld inspection that dominates the local civilian market. Formal civilian certification still follows your employer’s SNT-TC-1A written practice.
How do we get started?
Request a demo. We will show the environments and methods that fit your contracts and help your team lead set up scenario sets for crews across Caddo, Bossier and the wider Ark-La-Tex.
