NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Louisiana
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and few states depend on inspection as heavily as Louisiana. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like simulator that runs in a browser or app. Technicians enter a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank and work realistic inspection jobs on welds, pipe, pressure vessels, heat-exchanger tubes and structural members, with every job scored instantly. Louisiana's economy is built on the kind of equipment that needs constant inspection: the refineries and chemical plants of the Mississippi River industrial corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans; a cluster of LNG export terminals in Cameron and Calcasieu parishes and on the lower Mississippi; the refining and petrochemical complex around Lake Charles; offshore fabrication yards, shipyards and supply bases in Houma, Morgan City and New Iberia; Port Fourchon, the main service port for the deepwater Gulf; the Haynesville shale in the north-west; and aerospace work at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility and Barksdale Air Force Base. Practical NDT gives Louisiana crews realistic practice at any level between turnarounds and hitches, without booking lab time or consuming specimens.
Louisiana's NDT workforce and where the work is
Louisiana's inspection work follows its rivers, coast and basins, and each sub-region has a distinct character.
The Mississippi River industrial corridor. From Baton Rouge down through the river parishes to New Orleans and below, both banks of the Mississippi are lined with refineries, chemical and petrochemical plants, fertilizer plants, grain and bulk terminals and docks. Some of the largest refineries in the United States sit in this corridor. Inspection here is dominated by in-service work under API 510, 570 and 653, with piping circuit thickness surveys, corrosion under insulation, exchanger tube inspection, alloy verification, weld inspection on repairs and huge turnaround campaigns that bring contract technicians from across the Gulf Coast. At the southern end, LNG export capacity in Plaquemines Parish has added new cryogenic plant and piping.
South-west Louisiana. Lake Charles, Sulphur and Westlake form a major refining and petrochemical complex, and Cameron and Calcasieu parishes are home to several of the largest LNG export terminals in the country, with more under construction. New construction brings demand for PAUT and TOFD on thick welds and cryogenic alloy piping, while operating plants need tank, piping and tube inspection.
Acadiana and the Atchafalaya. Lafayette is the historic centre of the offshore oilfield services industry. New Iberia's Port of Iberia and the yards along the Atchafalaya at Morgan City fabricate offshore platforms, jackets, topsides, modules and vessels, and repair and maintain offshore equipment. Weld inspection on thick structural steel is the daily work.
Bayou Lafourche and Terrebonne. Houma and the surrounding bayou communities build and repair offshore supply vessels, workboats and marine equipment, and support Port Fourchon, the service base for much of the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Marine weld inspection, offshore equipment and pipeline work keep inspectors busy.
North Louisiana. Shreveport and Bossier City sit on the Haynesville shale, a major natural gas play with gathering systems, processing plants and pipelines feeding the Gulf Coast LNG terminals, and are also home to Barksdale Air Force Base and a manufacturing base.
New Orleans. Beyond refining, the New Orleans area hosts NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility, where large launch vehicle structures are built, shipbuilding and repair along the river, and one of the busiest port systems in the country.

New Orleans sits at the heart of a vast port system and near the refineries and chemical plants of the lower river parishes. NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility builds large launch vehicle structures, and shipyards along the river build and repair vessels. That gives local technicians a wide range of work: plant inspection in the Oil & Gas Site, marine and structural welds in the Welding Workshop and precision aerospace inspection in the Aircraft Hangar. New Orleans is also a base for contract inspection companies staffing turnarounds up and down the river.
Baton Rouge is home to one of the largest refineries in the United States and a dense cluster of chemical and petrochemical plants along the river. Turnaround inspection is the defining work: thousands of exchanger tubes, long piping circuits, alloy verification, tank farms and pressure vessels. IRIS, PMI, UT thickness surveys, LRUT screening of pipe racks and the Storage Tank environment are the most relevant practice sets, and scenario sets let supervisors check incoming contract technicians quickly.
Lake Charles anchors south-west Louisiana's refining and petrochemical complex and the LNG export terminals of Cameron and Calcasieu parishes. New construction of LNG trains and petrochemical units brings PAUT and TOFD on thick welds and PMI on cryogenic and alloy piping, while operating plants need tank, piping and tube inspection. The combination of construction and operations makes it one of the most varied NDT markets on the Gulf Coast.
Lafayette is the centre of Louisiana's oilfield services industry, with companies supporting offshore and onshore production across the Gulf. Technicians inspect drilling and production equipment, tubulars, lifting equipment and pressure equipment, where UT, MT, ET and LRUT screening are core skills. Lafayette is also a training centre for the Acadiana workforce, so trainees benefit from guided fundamentals.
Shreveport and Bossier City sit on the Haynesville shale, whose gas feeds pipelines to the Gulf Coast. Gathering and transmission pipeline welds call for RT and UT, and LRUT screening is useful on long runs. Barksdale Air Force Base and regional aerospace and manufacturing add eddy current and penetrant work in the Aircraft Hangar.
Houma and Terrebonne Parish build and repair offshore supply vessels, workboats and marine equipment, and support Port Fourchon, the service base for much of the deepwater Gulf. Hull and structural welds need PAUT, MT and VT, and the Welding Workshop is the natural practice environment for local shipyard inspectors.
New Iberia and the Port of Iberia host offshore fabrication yards and oilfield service companies. Platform components, modules and pressure equipment require UT, PAUT and TOFD on thick welds and MT on structural connections, practised in the Welding Workshop and NDT Lab.
Morgan City and the nearby Atchafalaya communities of Berwick and Amelia have long fabricated offshore platforms, jackets and topsides. Heavy structural welding is inspected with PAUT, TOFD, MT and RT, and the Welding Workshop lets technicians rehearse thick-section weld inspection between fabrication projects.
Environments and methods that match Louisiana work
Louisiana uses every Practical NDT environment, with a strong weighting toward plant and fabrication work.
The Oil & Gas Site, with 73 jobs, is the core environment for the river corridor, Lake Charles and the LNG terminals. It places technicians in a process plant with weld, corrosion, tube and screening jobs: contact UT and PAUT for thickness and corrosion mapping, TOFD for weld sizing, IRIS internal rotary UT on exchanger and boiler tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening of long pipe runs and PMI alloy verification on alloy circuits. For turnaround crews, it is the closest thing to a warm-up before walking into a unit.
The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, a daily task at refinery tank farms, river terminals and LNG sites under API 653.
The Welding Workshop, with 52 jobs, fits the offshore fabrication yards of Morgan City and New Iberia, the vessel builders of Houma and the Lafourche bayous, and pipeline construction in the Haynesville. RT interpretation, UT, PAUT and TOFD sizing, MT and VT against acceptance criteria are all practised on realistic weld coupons and fabrication joints.
The Aircraft Hangar, with 54 jobs, supports aerospace manufacturing in New Orleans, military aviation around Barksdale and helicopter and fixed-wing operators serving offshore platforms, with eddy current, penetrant and UT.
The NDT Lab, with 52 jobs, builds fundamentals on bench specimens and reference blocks for trainees and anyone preparing for a practical exam.
Across twelve methods, surface methods (PT, MT, VT) form the foundation; volumetric methods (UT contact, PAUT, TOFD, RT) carry weld and corrosion work; electromagnetic methods (ET, MFL) serve tubing, aerospace and tanks; and specialist techniques (LRUT, IRIS, PMI) reflect exactly what Louisiana refinery and LNG integrity programs ask for. 33 guided lessons connect them into a structured path.
Regulators and requirements Louisiana technicians meet
Radiation safety. Louisiana is an NRC Agreement State. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) regulates radioactive materials and x-ray equipment and runs the state's industrial radiography certification program, certifying radiographers, trainees and instructors. Radiographers complete approved classroom training, documented on-the-job experience as a trainee under an instructor named on the company license and state examinations. Practical NDT's RT scenarios involve no radiation source and do not count toward LDEQ training, experience or certification.
Boilers and pressure vessels. Boiler inspection in Louisiana is administered through the Office of State Fire Marshal. Refineries and chemical plants typically manage pressure vessel and piping inspection through owner-user programs following API 510 and 570, the National Board Inspection Code and ASME Sections V and VIII and B31.3.
Pipelines. The Office of Conservation's Pipeline Safety Program, within the Louisiana Department of Conservation and Energy (formerly the Department of Energy and Natural Resources), oversees intrastate pipeline safety under federal PHMSA rules in 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195. API 1104 governs pipeline welding and its NDT acceptance criteria.
Offshore and marine. Offshore platforms in federal waters fall under the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, and marine construction and vessels often follow classification society rules and AWS D1.1 structural welding requirements. Process plants follow OSHA's Process Safety Management standard, 29 CFR 1910.119, including mechanical integrity inspection.
Personnel qualification. Most Louisiana employers qualify NDT personnel through written practices based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Atlantis's training aligns with SNT-TC-1A. Some international offshore projects may also ask for ISO 9712 certificates, and marine clients may require classification society approvals; those are market context only, not something Atlantis certifies. Practical NDT is useful practice under any scheme.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Louisiana
New trainees. Louisiana's technical colleges, craft training programs and inspection companies bring in a steady flow of new technicians, many from welding, pipefitting and helper roles. Guided fundamentals let trainees practise calibration, probe handling, scan coverage and indication interpretation as often as they need, with instant feedback, before working on live units.
Working technicians. A technician who spent the offseason on fabrication yard PAUT may be called to a Baton Rouge turnaround to run IRIS or PMI. Offshore and rotational hitches separate long stretches of work. Rare-defect refreshers between assignments, on things like tube pitting, stress corrosion cracking and weld root defects, help technicians arrive ready.
Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps before a turnaround or fabrication project, giving a like-for-like view across contract technicians who arrive from across the Gulf Coast.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not grant a Level I, II or III, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens required by ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer's written practice. It does not satisfy LDEQ industrial radiography certification or any other state requirement. It gives Louisiana technicians more realistic repetitions before the exam and between jobs, complementing formal NDT training and certification. The formal practical exam remains the step that counts.

Frequently asked questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?
No. It is practice and readiness only. Certification under an SNT-TC-1A written practice still needs a practical exam on real specimens, and Louisiana radiographers still need LDEQ certification.
Can it help crews prepare for a refinery turnaround?
Yes. Supervisors can assign Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank jobs such as IRIS tube inspection, PMI, UT thickness surveys and MFL floor screening, then review scores to see who is ready. Ask for a turnaround-focused demo.
Is it useful for offshore fabrication yards?
Yes. The Welding Workshop covers thick-section weld inspection with PAUT, TOFD, MT and RT, which matches platform and module fabrication work.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: guided fundamentals for trainees, rare-defect refreshers for working technicians, and scenario building and benchmarking for Level IIIs.
Does it include radiography?
Yes, as technique and image interpretation practice with no radiation source. It does not count toward LDEQ certification or on-the-job hours.
