NDT training in Odessa: how it works for Odessa employers and technicians

Short answer: NDT training for Odessa employers and technicians is delivered by Atlantis NDT self-paced online or onsite at your yard, shop or plant, under ASNT Level III oversight, to ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Level I, II and III courses cover UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET. Your employer certifies you under its written practice once you complete training, documented experience, Level III-administered exams and a vision test. There is no Atlantis classroom in Odessa. We bring the training to your crew.

Odessa's inspection economy moves with the Permian Basin. When rig and frac-spread counts rise, oilfield service yards along the I-20 corridor fill up with equipment that needs inspection between jobs. Frac iron, pressure control equipment, drill pipe and bottom-hole assembly components all cycle through. Gas processing plants, compressor stations, tank batteries and gathering systems across Ector, Midland, Andrews, Winkler and Ward counties need in-service inspection all year. Odessa's fabrication shops build the separators, heater-treaters, skids and structural steel that the field consumes. When the cycle turns, employers who kept a certified core crew recover fastest.

This section goes deeper than the overview above. It covers what each course teaches and how it maps to Permian Basin work, the SNT-TC-1A path step by step, how training fits around field rotations, and what Odessa NDT companies need from a written practice and a Level III. UT for Permian service work. The ultrasonic courses cover transducer selection, calibration on reference blocks, straight-beam thickness measurement, angle-beam weld examination, and evaluation of indications. For Odessa candidates we put extra weight on the practical realities of thickness gauging on used, pitted and eroded components. Frac iron and flowline components wear from the inside, and a Level II has to tell real wall loss from bad coupling on a rough surface.

MT, the Odessa workhorse. Magnetic particle testing is probably the most in-demand method in Odessa service yards. The MT course covers magnetisation techniques (yoke, coil, prod and central conductor), field direction and strength, wet fluorescent versus visible particles, black-light requirements, demagnetisation, and interpretation of relevant and non-relevant indications. Threaded connections and shoulders on drill pipe and BHA components are classic fatigue-crack sites. Recognising a real crack at a thread root is a skill that separates a Level II from a Level I.

PT and VT. The penetrant course covers the full process from pre-cleaning through dwell, removal, development and interpretation, with emphasis on contamination and on how surface finish on machined sealing faces affects results. The visual course covers direct and remote visual technique, lighting, measurement tools and documentation. In an Odessa yard, VT is usually the first gate before any other method is applied.

RT. The radiography course covers sources, exposure calculations, geometric unsharpness, IQIs, and film and digital interpretation for weld inspection on pipelines and plant piping. Most Permian RT work is pipeline and midstream construction, where the weld acceptance standards in API 1104 are the typical reference.

PAUT and TOFD. These courses suit Odessa technicians moving from field UT into midstream and plant work, where encoded weld data and corrosion mapping are increasingly specified. Both assume a UT Level II foundation.

ET. The eddy current course covers impedance-plane interpretation, surface probes and tubing inspection. It is useful in gas processing plants, where coolers and exchangers are a maintenance priority.

Level III. Odessa companies that want to certify their own people can prepare a senior technician through ASNT Level III training. Candidates can test their readiness with UT Level II practice questions and the PAUT Level II mock exam.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Odessa, step by step

SNT-TC-1A is an employer-based scheme. ASNT publishes the recommended practice, but the certificate that lets you work comes from your employer. Here's the route for an Odessa technician.

  1. Written practice. Your employer adopts a written practice setting out education, training, experience, examination, vision and recertification requirements for each method and level. No written practice means no valid certification, however much training you have taken.
  2. Formal training. You complete classroom training in the method and level, online or onsite. The hours come from the written practice. See the training-requirements matrix.
  3. Documented experience. You log on-the-job hours in the method, supervised by certified personnel and signed off. In a busy Odessa yard it's easy to do the work and forget to record it, so keep your own copy of every log.
  4. General exam. A written exam on method principles and theory.
  5. Specific exam. A written exam on your employer's equipment, procedures and the specifications you inspect to, which in the Permian often includes customer and industry inspection specifications for oilfield tubulars and equipment.
  6. Practical exam. A hands-on exam on real specimens, graded by a Level III or a qualified designee using a documented checklist.
  7. Vision examination. A near-vision acuity check annually, plus colour contrast differentiation as the written practice requires.
  8. Certification. Your employer certifies you at the level and method achieved.
  9. Recertification. This happens at the interval in the written practice. Keep your records current so recertification is a formality.

For a complete explanation of the scheme, see SNT-TC-1A training and certification.

Self-paced online or onsite NDT training for Odessa crews

Permian work doesn't respect a nine-to-five calendar. Crews run on rotations, yards get busy when a fleet comes back between jobs, and field technicians can be two hours out on a lease road. Atlantis delivery is built around that.

  • Self-paced online theory. Self-paced modules technicians can study from the yard office, a hotel room on hitch, or home on days off. This is where most of the classroom hours are covered.
  • Onsite at your facility. For groups, practical training and practical exams run at your Odessa shop or yard, on your own equipment and on components that look like the ones your technicians inspect every day. Nobody drives to Houston or Dallas for a week.
  • Blended. Online theory is spread over the quieter weeks, then a short, intensive practical block is timed for a gap between jobs or a slow patch in activity.

We schedule around your operation, not the other way round. If a frac fleet is due back, or a gas plant has a maintenance window planned, tell us and we build the programme around it. We reply within one business day. Ask about onsite training for your Odessa crew, or read how online NDT training works.

Where NDT technicians work in Odessa

Oilfield service and rental yards. Odessa is where much of the Permian's pressure pumping, wireline, coiled tubing and rental equipment is maintained. Treating iron, valves, manifolds and pressure control equipment go through inspection and recertification programmes set by manufacturers, operators and industry specifications. That generates steady UT, MT, PT and VT demand. Drill pipe and BHA inspection is often specified to industry standards such as DS-1 or NS-2. Those standards carry their own inspector-qualification expectations on top of SNT-TC-1A, which employers build into their written practice.

Midstream pipelines and gathering systems. The Permian's crude, gas and NGL takeaway lines, plus thousands of miles of gathering pipe, need weld inspection during construction and integrity work afterwards. Federal pipeline safety rules (49 CFR Parts 192 and 195) apply to regulated lines. The Railroad Commission of Texas oversees intrastate pipeline safety. API 1104 is the usual reference for pipeline weld inspection.

Gas processing plants and compressor stations. Cryogenic gas plants, amine units, compressor stations and fractionation feed infrastructure need in-service inspection of vessels, piping and exchangers, with ASME Section VIII and B31.3 as common references and API inspection codes guiding in-service programmes.

Tank batteries and storage. Production tanks and larger storage in the basin create thickness-survey and weld-inspection demand. Owners often reference API 650 for new tanks and API 653 for in-service tanks.

Fabrication shops. Odessa and Midland shops fabricate pressure vessels, production equipment, skids and structural steel to ASME Section VIII and AWS D1.1, and need certified MT, PT, UT and VT personnel for their own quality control.

Sour service. Much Permian production carries hydrogen sulfide. Inspection programmes pay close attention to cracking mechanisms, which pushes demand for sensitive surface methods such as wet fluorescent MT and for well-controlled UT. Technicians also need H2S safety training, a site requirement separate from NDT certification.

Radiography licensing in Texas. Texas is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography is licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Radiation Control Program. Texas requires individual radiographers to hold state radiographer certification and to carry their identification while working, in addition to the employer's licence, operating and emergency procedures, and radiation-safety training. Crews following work across the state line into the Delaware Basin in New Mexico also fall under New Mexico's own agreement-state programme and need to confirm reciprocity. Atlantis teaches the RT method. Licensing and radiation-safety compliance remain with your employer.

What Odessa employers typically ask for: SNT-TC-1A Level II in MT and UT (often both), clean and complete experience logs, familiarity with the specifications their customers invoke, a valid driver's licence, and the site safety orientations operators require. Some employers and clients also ask for other credentials, such as API individual certifications for plant inspectors or AWS CWI for welding inspectors. Those are separate schemes with their own certifying bodies. Atlantis trains to SNT-TC-1A only.

Level III services and written practices for Odessa NDT companies

Plenty of Odessa inspection companies started as two technicians and a truck and grew fast in a boom. The written practice often didn't grow with them. The usual audit findings are a template written practice that doesn't match the methods actually performed, specific exams that don't reference the company's own procedures, practical exams with no retained checklists, and nobody clearly designated as the responsible Level III.

Atlantis helps Odessa NDT companies fix that before a customer audit finds it:

  • Written-practice development. A written practice built around the methods, levels and specifications you really work to, including how oilfield inspection standards your customers invoke fit alongside SNT-TC-1A.
  • Outsourced Level III services. Exam preparation and administration, procedure review and approval, and certification file audits for companies without an in-house Level III.
  • Corporate programmes. Training plans that take new hires from trainee to Level II in the methods your yard needs most, sequenced around activity levels.
  • SNT-TC-1A guidance. Straight answers on what the recommended practice requires and where your written practice has discretion.

Practise before the practical exam

Most practical-exam failures come from technique and set-up errors under pressure, not from a lack of theory. The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees rehearse 12 method families in twelve workplaces, including an oil and gas site, a storage tank and a welding workshop, so they can walk through a technique step by step before they pick up real equipment.

It is practice only. The simulator does not replace hands-on training with real instruments, and it does not replace the practical exam on real specimens that SNT-TC-1A requires. Use it to arrive at the practical better prepared.

Your instructor

Programmes are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He sets course content, oversees practical training and examinations, and leads the written-practice and Level III work for Atlantis clients. Odessa employers talk directly to a Level III about their programme.

Frequently asked questions about NDT training in Odessa

How do I get NDT certified in Odessa?

Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, you complete formal training in a method, build documented on-the-job experience, pass general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III, and pass a vision test. Your employer then certifies you under its written practice. Atlantis delivers the training online or onsite and can support your employer's Level III and written practice.

Can I take NDT training online in Texas?

Yes, for the classroom portion. Atlantis runs self-paced online theory classes for Level I, II and III in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET. Practical training and the practical exam must be done in person on real specimens, which Odessa employers usually arrange onsite. See online NDT training.

How long does UT Level 2 training take?

Your employer's written practice sets the classroom hours and the documented experience hours for Level I and Level II. The experience requirement usually takes longer than the classroom part. See the reference figures in our training-requirements matrix and compare them with the hours you've already logged.

Do I need a license for radiography in Texas?

Yes. The company needs a licence from the Texas DSHS Radiation Control Program, and individual radiographers must hold Texas industrial radiographer certification and carry their identification while working. SNT-TC-1A RT method certification is separate, and employers expect both.

What does NDT training cost in Odessa?

We don't publish prices. The cost depends on method, level, number of technicians, online versus onsite delivery, and whether you also need written-practice or Level III support. Send those details and we reply within one business day. Request an Odessa training quote.

Is ASNT certification recognised by Odessa employers?

Yes. SNT-TC-1A is the framework most Permian Basin inspection companies and operators use to qualify NDT personnel. Because certification is employer-based, a new employer reviews your records and certifies you under its own written practice.

Which NDT method should I learn first for oilfield work in Odessa?

MT and VT are the most common starting points in Odessa service yards, followed by UT for thickness and weld work. That combination covers most of the inspection done on drilling, completion and pressure control equipment.

Is NDT a good career in the Permian Basin?

Demand follows activity, so it has booms and slow patches. Certified Level II technicians with more than one method, clean records and a willingness to work field rotations tend to be the most in demand. For pay context, see our NDT salary guide. We don't quote local salary figures.

Can Atlantis train our Odessa crew onsite?

Yes. Onsite delivery at your shop or yard is the standard model for groups, using your equipment and representative components. Ask about onsite training for your Odessa crew.

Does my certification transfer if I move from Odessa to another employer?

Not automatically. SNT-TC-1A certifications belong to the issuing employer. Your training, experience and exam records move with you, and your next employer uses them to certify you under its own written practice.

What is the difference between Level II and Level III?

A Level II performs, interprets and reports examinations against the governing specification. A Level III establishes and approves procedures, interprets codes and specifications, and trains and examines Level I and II personnel. See ASNT Level III training.

Can I practise before my practical exam?

Yes. The Practical NDT simulator lets you rehearse 12 methods, including an oil and gas site environment. It is practice only and does not replace hands-on training or the practical exam on real specimens.

Why Odessa needs certified NDT personnel

Odessa sits on Permian Basin field operations, oilfield equipment manufacture and repair, and regional processing infrastructure. That industrial base is what creates sustained demand for qualified inspection personnel here: the assets in question — drilling and pressure control equipment, gathering systems, processing plant, tanks and vessels — are examined on intervals set by code rather than by preference, and the examinations have to be performed and interpreted by people whose qualification can be evidenced.

In practice that means the methods pulled hardest in this market are magnetic particle and penetrant on oilfield equipment, ultrasonic and radiography on welds and piping. A qualification programme built for Odessa should follow that demand rather than cover every method thinly.

Which level you need for Odessa work

Level I performs specific calibrations and examinations and records results under direction. It is where most people entering Odessa inspection work start, and for drilling and pressure control equipment it is usually reached in a single method first rather than several at once.

Level II sets up and calibrates equipment, interprets and evaluates results against the applicable code, and writes the report. This is the level most contracts in Texas actually specify, because it is the level that can make an accept-or-reject call without supervision.

Level III establishes techniques and procedures, approves them, interprets codes and specifications, and takes responsibility for the qualification and examination of Level I and II personnel. It is also the level that signs the Written Practice an auditor will ask for. For operators running magnetic particle and penetrant on oilfield equipment across multiple sites, Level III capability is the difference between owning your inspection programme and renting it.

How training reaches Odessa

Atlantis does not operate a classroom in Odessa, and it is worth being straightforward about that rather than implying otherwise. Training is delivered on-site at your own facility anywhere in Texas and the surrounding region — which for a corporate buyer is usually the better arrangement anyway, since the practical specimens can reflect the drilling and pressure control equipment your people will actually be examining, and nobody loses days to travel.

Where you have only one or two candidates, they can enrol online at any time of year: theory is primarily self-paced, practice runs in the Practical NDT simulator, and the supervised practical takes place at the employer's own facility. Which route is right depends on headcount and on how quickly you need people qualified; tell us both and we will say plainly which we would recommend.

Certification route: ASNT, ISO 9712, and which your employer needs

Two models operate in the United States and they are not interchangeable. Under SNT-TC-1A, certification is granted by the employer against the employer's own Written Practice — flexible, and the reason auditors ask to see that document rather than a certificate. ISO 9712 and schemes such as PCN and CSWIP certify through an independent body, so the certificate is portable between employers. ANSI/ASNT CP-189 sits between them as a standard rather than a recommended practice.

Which you need is a contractual question, not a technical one. Plenty of Texas contracts name one specifically, and candidates who choose the wrong route lose months. If you are unsure which your client base expects, that is worth a five-minute conversation before you enrol anyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is there NDT training near me in Odessa?

Atlantis delivers training on-site at facilities across Texas rather than from a fixed classroom in Odessa. For a team, that is normally faster and cheaper than sending people away; for an individual, online enrolment, which is open all year, is usually the better route. Tell us which you are and we will point you at the honest option, including if that is someone else.

How long does it take to qualify at Level II?

It depends on the method and on how much documented experience you already hold, because the requirement is training hours and experience hours, not training alone. Someone already working under supervision in the method progresses considerably faster than someone starting cold. We will map your existing hours against the requirement before you commit to anything.

Can our own staff be certified without an outside body?

Under SNT-TC-1A, yes — that is precisely the model, and it requires a compliant Written Practice and a qualified Level III to administer it. Many operators use an outsourced Level III for exactly this. If you do not currently have one, that is the gap to close first, because without it the certifications you issue will not survive an audit.

Do you train all methods?

UT, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus advanced techniques including phased array and TOFD. API 510, 570 and 653 inspector certifications are separate and are sat through API. For a Odessa programme we would normally suggest starting with magnetic particle and penetrant on oilfield equipment and adding from there as the work demands.

Looking for NDT training near you?

Searches like "NDT training near me" and "NDT certification near me" usually mean one of two things: a company that needs a crew qualified without losing them to travel, or an individual looking for the closest route to a certificate. Both are answerable from Odessa.

For companies, proximity is solved by delivery rather than address — programmes run on-site at your facility, so the training comes to the crew and the practical work uses specimens matching what your people actually examine. For individuals, online enrolment is open all year: theory is primarily self-paced, practice runs in the Practical NDT simulator, and the supervised practical takes place at the employer's facility, so no local classroom is needed.
