NDT training in San Antonio: how it works for San Antonio employers and technicians

3. On-the-job experience. Supervised experience on real work, logged and signed. Busy midstream and pipeline construction seasons can build experience quickly. Keep your own copy of the log.
4. General examination. A written exam on method principles.
5. Specific examination. A written exam on the employer's procedures, codes and equipment, such as API 1104 acceptance criteria for pipeline work or ASME B31.3 for plant piping.
6. Practical examination. A hands-on exam on real specimens with real discontinuities, administered and graded by a Level III or designated examiner.
7. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour-contrast testing per the written practice, repeated annually.
8. Certification by the employer. The employer certifies you for the method and level, and the records are kept on file.
9. Recertification. On the interval set by the written practice. Certification generally ends when you leave an employer, and a new employer re-certifies you, often crediting documented prior training and experience.

Online, live-virtual or onsite NDT training for San Antonio crews

Where NDT technicians work in San Antonio

Port San Antonio and aviation MRO. The former Kelly Air Force Base is now Port San Antonio, one of the country's larger aerospace maintenance campuses. Boeing runs the Department of Defense's heavy-maintenance depot for the C-17 Globemaster III fleet there. StandardAero runs a large engine MRO operation there, a centre for T56 turboprop engines used on the C-130 and for Rolls-Royce RB211-535 engines used on the Boeing 757. Commercial narrow-body heavy maintenance and other aerospace tenants fill the rest of the campus, and it has been expanding with new aerospace space. Engine and airframe MRO relies on ET, PT, UT, MT and borescope inspection, qualified under NAS 410 or equivalent aerospace schemes, with OEM and operator approvals and, for military work, technical orders such as TO 33B-1-1. SNT-TC-1A method knowledge carries over, but the personnel qualification system is different.

Joint Base San Antonio. JBSA-Lackland (which includes Kelly Field), JBSA-Randolph and JBSA-Fort Sam Houston together make San Antonio one of the largest military communities in the United States. Military NDT is done by service members trained in military programmes. After service, many of them look for civilian NDT careers in the region, which is where formal SNT-TC-1A training and certification come in.

Refining and the energy industry. Valero Energy, one of the largest independent refiners in the US, is headquartered in San Antonio. A refinery on the city's east side processes crude into fuels and specialty products. Refinery inspection uses SNT-TC-1A personnel for NDT, with API 510, 570 and 653 inspectors of record, and codes including ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII and API 650/653.

Eagle Ford Shale. South and southeast of the city, the Eagle Ford play covers several counties, with production facilities, gathering lines, compressor stations, gas processing plants and crude and condensate pipelines heading to Corpus Christi and the Houston area. Pipeline weld inspection follows API 1104. Operators require pipeline operator qualification for covered tasks under federal pipeline safety rules, which is separate from NDT certification. Facility piping and vessels follow ASME B31.3 and Section VIII. San Antonio is the natural base for many of the contractors and technicians serving the play.

Manufacturing. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas builds full-size pickups and SUVs on the south side of San Antonio, with an on-site supplier park. Automotive and industrial manufacturing in the region uses MT, PT, UT and VT on welds, castings and forgings, often under customer quality requirements rather than a construction code. Cement plants along the I-35 corridor toward New Braunfels need UT thickness and weld inspection on kilns, mills and structural steel.

Power and utilities. CPS Energy, the city-owned utility, runs gas and coal-fired generation around San Antonio and co-owns the South Texas Project nuclear plant near Bay City. Power plants need ET on condenser and feedwater-heater tubes, UT on high-energy piping and boiler tubes, and MT and PT on welds during outages. Nuclear plant in-service inspection generally uses ANSI/ASNT CP-189 personnel qualification, not SNT-TC-1A.

Research. San Antonio is also home to Southwest Research Institute, a large independent research organisation with a long history of nondestructive evaluation research and development, including guided-wave and sensor technology for pipes and structures. It gives the city a depth of NDE engineering expertise unusual for a market its size.

Radiography licensing in Texas. Texas is an NRC Agreement State. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Radiation Control Program licenses industrial radiography under 25 TAC §289.255. Texas also has its own individual requirements. A licensee may not let anyone act as a radiographer trainee until that person holds a DSHS-issued trainee status card or a certification ID card. To get the trainee card, the person must complete an agency-accepted radiation-safety course. Full radiographer certification then requires the state's further training, experience and examination steps. These state credentials are separate from, and in addition to, SNT-TC-1A RT method certification. Your RT method certificate says you can interpret a radiograph, and your DSHS card says you are authorised to work with the source. Level III services and written practices for San Antonio NDT companies

Practise before the practical exam

Practical exams test your process: set-up, calibration, coverage, evaluation and reporting.
