NDT Training and Certification in Indiana

Short answer: Indiana technicians and employers can get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III NDT training from Atlantis NDT live online, in live-virtual cohorts, or onsite at their own mill, refinery, plant or shop, with an ASNT NDT Level III leading and overseeing the programme. Certification is employer-based and follows your company written practice. Atlantis has no training centre in Indiana; we teach online or travel to your facility.

Indiana is the most steel-intensive state in the country and one of the most manufacturing-intensive. Northwest Indiana's lakefront holds integrated steel mills and the largest inland refinery in the US, Central Indiana builds aircraft engines, transmissions and diesel engines, Southern Indiana runs coal and gas power stations, an aluminium smelter and a naval research centre, and Northern Indiana builds a large share of the country's recreational vehicles. Almost every one of those products depends on welds, castings, forgings or pressure equipment that someone has to inspect. This page explains how Atlantis NDT training works for Indiana, which methods Indiana employers rely on, how Indiana's radiography licensing is changing, and how to request an Indiana training quote.

Where NDT technicians work in Indiana

Direct answer: Indiana NDT demand is concentrated in Northwest Indiana (steel, refining, power, heavy fabrication), Central Indiana (aerospace engines, powertrain, pharma and construction), Northern Indiana (RV and trailer manufacturing, defence electronics, foundries), West Central Indiana (aerospace assembly, automotive, steel) and Southern Indiana (power generation, aluminium, a refinery and the Crane naval centre).

Northwest Indiana: Whiting, East Chicago, Gary, Burns Harbor and Michigan City

The Lake Michigan shoreline is one of the densest heavy-industry corridors in North America. BP's Whiting refinery is the largest refinery in the Midwest, and its turnarounds pull in large numbers of contract inspectors for UT thickness surveys, PAUT and TOFD on pressure-vessel welds, radiography of piping welds and visual inspection of tanks and structures. The integrated steel mills, U.S. Steel's Gary Works and Cleveland-Cliffs' Indiana Harbor and Burns Harbor works, need inspection of blast-furnace components, cranes and crane rails, rolling-mill rolls and shafts, gas mains and structural steel, where MT, UT and VT are the daily methods. NIPSCO's generating stations at Michigan City and Wheatfield add boiler tube and header inspection during outages, and the Port of Indiana at Burns Harbor and the heavy fabrication shops around Portage, Hammond and LaPorte add structural welding work. See our Whiting NDT training page and manufacturing and fabrication NDT training in Gary.

Central Indiana: Indianapolis, Columbus and Kokomo

Indianapolis is home to Rolls-Royce's large aero-engine operation and to Allison Transmission, so aerospace-grade penetrant, eddy current, ultrasonic and radiographic inspection of rotating parts, castings and welded assemblies is a major source of demand, often under prime-contractor specifications. Cummins in Columbus designs and builds engines and components, which brings casting and machined-part inspection. Kokomo has transmission and casting plants and electronics manufacturing. The Indianapolis metro also has heavy construction, INDOT bridge and highway work, hospital and pharma construction with stainless process piping, and a large base of tooling and machine shops.

Northern Indiana: Elkhart, South Bend and Fort Wayne

Elkhart County builds a large share of North America's recreational vehicles, and the frames, chassis and trailer structures are welded steel and aluminium where VT, PT and MT support weld quality programmes. South Bend has a mix of aerospace and defence suppliers, foundries and manufacturers. Fort Wayne has GM's truck assembly plant, defence electronics and a long industrial history in wire, castings and copper products.

West Central Indiana: Lafayette and Crawfordsville

Lafayette has GE Aerospace's jet-engine assembly operation and Subaru's assembly plant, and Purdue University's engineering research presence adds aerospace and materials activity. Crawfordsville has Nucor's steel mill. Aerospace assembly and steel work make this a strong UT, ET, PT and MT region.

Southern Indiana: Evansville, Mount Vernon, Princeton and Crane

Southwest Indiana is an energy and heavy-process region. Power stations along the Ohio and Wabash rivers, including Gibson, Rockport and Edwardsport, need boiler, piping and structural inspection. Alcoa's Warrick operations near Newburgh and the CountryMark refinery at Mount Vernon add process inspection, and Toyota's Princeton plant adds automotive work. Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane in Martin County is a major defence engineering site. Indiana has no commercial nuclear power plant, so nuclear ISI is less of a factor here than in neighbouring states, although Indiana technicians often travel to outages in Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.

Indianapolis. Aerospace work dominates the higher-skill end of the Indianapolis NDT market, with penetrant, eddy current and ultrasonic inspection of engine components under strict customer specifications. Construction and infrastructure work, including stadium, hospital and highway projects, adds structural VT and UT. See the Indianapolis training page.

Whiting and East Chicago. Refinery and steel work here is field work: scaffolds, confined spaces, high temperatures and turnaround schedules. Technicians need UT thickness and PAUT skills and a working knowledge of the codes behind API inspection programmes. We train the NDT side; we do not offer API inspector certification courses.

Gary and Burns Harbor. Steel-mill NDT is unusual: large forgings and rolls, heavy cranes, gas mains, furnaces and huge structures. MT and UT on cranes, shafts and rails are constant, and mills often want onsite training using their own components.

Evansville and Southwest Indiana. Power-plant outages, aluminium processing and the Mount Vernon refinery drive UT, ET of tubing, RT and VT. Online theory helps technicians who rotate between plants.

South Bend, Elkhart and Fort Wayne. High-volume welding in RV and trailer plants, truck assembly and defence suppliers means VT, PT and MT are the core methods, with UT for thicker structures.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Indiana, step by step

Direct answer: Indiana does not issue NDT certifications. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A your employer certifies you after you complete the training, experience, exams and vision test its written practice requires, with exams administered by a Level III.

  1. The employer's written practice. It defines methods, levels, training and experience requirements, exam content and grading, vision tests and recertification. If your Indiana company does not have one, see written practice development.
  2. Formal training. Classroom hours per method and level, set by the written practice from SNT-TC-1A recommendations. The training requirements matrix lists the guideline figures.
  3. On-the-job experience. Documented hours in the method, on the work you will be certified for, under qualified supervision.
  4. Examinations. General (theory), specific (your employer's procedures, codes and equipment) and practical (real specimens), administered by a Level III.
  5. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity annually and colour contrast as required.
  6. Certification by the employer. Documented and valid while you work for that employer under that written practice.
  7. Recertification. At the interval and by the method the written practice sets.

ASNT NDT Level III certification is issued by ASNT through examination; your employer then certifies you as its Level III. Read more on SNT-TC-1A training and certification.

Radiography licensing and other Indiana requirements

Direct answer: Indiana's radioactive-materials licensing has recently been changing. Indiana has moved to become an NRC Agreement State, with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) taking over licensing of byproduct, source and certain special nuclear materials from the NRC. Confirm the current licensing authority with the state before planning isotope radiography work in Indiana.

For many years, industrial radiography using isotope sources in Indiana was licensed directly by the US NRC under 10 CFR Part 34, through NRC Region III. Under the new Agreement State arrangement, the state assumes that role and adopts rules compatible with the NRC's, and existing NRC licences are converted to Indiana licences. For a radiography company this affects who issues and inspects your licence, where you send amendments and reports, and which rulebook your radiation-safety programme cites. What does not change is the substance: radiographers and radiographer trainees need radiation-safety training, an approved certification route, personnel dosimetry, calibrated survey meters and crew arrangements compatible with the federal rules. X-ray equipment is registered separately with the state. Because this transition is recent, confirm the current licensing authority and forms with IDHS before a new crew starts field work.

Our RT method training covers technique, exposure calculations, film and digital imaging and interpretation. It is not a substitute for the radiation-safety training and radiographer certification the licence requires; your crew needs both.

Boilers and pressure vessels. Indiana's Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety programme sits within IDHS's Division of Fire and Building Safety. Indiana adopts ASME and National Board codes, so ASME Section V NDT and Section I or VIII acceptance criteria apply to new construction, and National Board Inspection Code requirements apply to repairs and alterations.

Pipelines. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission's Pipeline Safety Division oversees intrastate gas pipelines; interstate gas and hazardous-liquid pipelines crossing Indiana are regulated by PHMSA. Weld inspection follows API 1104 and operator qualification programmes.

Codes common in Indiana. ASME V, VIII and B31.3 in refining; ASME Section I and B31.1 in power; AWS D1.1 for structural and mill steel; AASHTO/AWS D1.5 on INDOT bridges; API 1104 on pipelines; aerospace prime and NAS 410 requirements in engine work (context only); and automotive customer standards.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Indiana

Direct answer: Indiana crews can take Atlantis NDT theory live online or in live-virtual cohorts, or have the Level III-led course delivered onsite at their facility. Practical exams are performed on real specimens under Level III oversight in every case.

Indiana scheduling is driven by heavy industry. Steel mills run continuously, with planned outages on blast furnaces, casters and mills; refinery turnarounds at Whiting and Mount Vernon concentrate contractor demand into a few weeks; power plants schedule spring and autumn outages around peak demand; RV and automotive plants have model-year and summer shutdowns. We schedule theory before those peaks and practicals and specific exams during quieter weeks. Onsite delivery is the natural fit for mills and large plants: the instructor uses your equipment, procedures and real components, and the specific exam reflects your actual work. Live online theory suits contractors and smaller shops with one or two technicians per method, and works well in Southern and Northern Indiana where travel to Indianapolis or Chicago takes time.

For Indiana employers: written practice and Level III services

Direct answer: Indiana employers that certify their own NDT personnel need an SNT-TC-1A written practice, a qualified Level III and auditable records. Atlantis NDT writes and reviews written practices, provides Level III services and runs corporate training programmes for Indiana companies.

Many Indiana fabricators, foundries and RV manufacturers do some NDT in-house without a full-time Level III, and only find out about documentation gaps during a customer audit or after a quality escape. Common gaps are training hours that do not match the practice, exams written or graded by someone who is not a Level III, missing practical exam records, expired vision tests, and procedures that no longer match the equipment in use. We help with:

If an audit is approaching, book a Level III consultation for your Indiana company.

Practise before your practical exam

Direct answer: The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets Indiana trainees practise 12 NDT methods in 5 virtual environments before their hands-on exam. It is practice only and does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.

The environments are an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. For Indiana users, the oil and gas site and storage tank match refinery and tank-farm work in Whiting and Mount Vernon, the welding workshop matches fabrication, RV and mill structural work, and the aircraft hangar matches aero-engine and aerospace work in Indianapolis and Lafayette. See Practical NDT and Practical NDT Indiana.
