NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Indiana
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Indiana is exactly the kind of state it was designed for. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like environment that runs in a browser or app. You pick up a virtual probe, yoke, spray can or film cassette, work a realistic part, find (or miss) the defect, and get scored feedback straight away. It works for a first-week trainee who has never held a transducer and for a Level II who has not seen a lamination since last spring. Indiana needs that kind of hands-on NDT practice more than most states. The Calumet shoreline in the northwest runs some of the most concentrated steelmaking and refining capacity in the country. Indianapolis and central Indiana build aero-engines, diesel engines and drivetrain components. The Ohio River corridor around Evansville handles aluminum, coal-fired power, barge traffic and a regional refinery. Elkhart and South Bend fabricate trailers, recreational vehicles and heavy components. All of that work depends on technicians whose hands and eyes are sharp on the day they are sent to the job. That sharpness is the whole point of an NDT simulator.
Indiana’s NDT workforce and where the work is
Indiana’s inspection work splits into four fairly distinct industrial regions, and each of them asks different things of a technician.
Northwest Indiana (the Calumet Region). Lake County and Porter County, along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, hold integrated steel mills at Gary, Indiana Harbor (East Chicago) and Burns Harbor, plus the Whiting refinery, the largest refinery in the Midwest at roughly 440,000 barrels a day of crude capacity, with a site that runs into Hammond and East Chicago. That combination produces a steady flow of shutdown and turnaround work: UT thickness surveys on process piping, weld inspection on replacement spools, magnetic particle testing on crane girders and rolling-mill components, and radiography on new pressure welds. The Port of Indiana at Burns Harbor adds structural and marine work, and the regional power plants and pipeline terminals that feed the refinery add more.
Central Indiana. Indianapolis is home to major aero-engine manufacturing and overhaul, and the surrounding region builds diesel engines (Columbus is known for it), transmissions and automotive parts (Kokomo and Anderson have long histories here). That work leans toward precision methods: eddy current on engine and airframe components, fluorescent penetrant on turbine parts, UT on forgings and castings, and visual inspection against tight acceptance criteria. Central Indiana also has a dense network of fabrication shops building structural steel, pressure vessels and process skids for customers across the Midwest.
Northern Indiana (Elkhart and St. Joseph counties). The Elkhart area is widely known as a centre of recreational vehicle and manufactured-housing production, and the wider South Bend region has foundries, metal fabricators and tooling shops. Weld quality and fit-up are the everyday concerns, and visual and surface methods dominate.
Southwest Indiana and the Ohio River. Around Evansville the industrial base includes aluminum production in Warrick County, a regional crude refinery at Mount Vernon, coal-fired generating stations, a large vehicle assembly plant near Princeton, chemical and plastics plants, and barge terminals on the river. Boiler tube inspection during outages, corrosion mapping on tanks and piping, and weld inspection on river terminal structures all show up here. In the south-central part of the state, the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane anchors a defense-technology cluster with its own quality and inspection demands.
Indiana has no commercial nuclear power plant, so the nuclear-specific NDT market that dominates some neighbouring states is small here. The weight of Indiana NDT work sits in steel, refining, power, heavy manufacturing and aerospace. Many technicians who live in Indiana also travel to turnarounds in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky, which is one more reason skills have to be ready at short notice.
Practical NDT by city in Indiana
Each of the Indiana cities below has its own Practical NDT page with more local detail. The table shows how the main local sectors map to the simulator’s environments and methods.
| City | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Indianapolis | Aero-engine manufacturing and overhaul, automotive and diesel components, structural and process fabrication | Aircraft Hangar (ET, PT, VT), NDT Lab (UT on forgings, PMI), Welding Workshop (VT, MT) |
| Gary | Integrated steel, the Whiting refinery corridor, port and terminal structures, power generation | Oil & Gas Site (UT thickness, IRIS, PMI, LRUT), Storage Tank (shell UT, MFL floor), Welding Workshop (RT, PAUT, TOFD) |
| South Bend | RV and trailer fabrication, foundries, metalworking and tooling, university research | Welding Workshop (VT, MT, PT, UT), NDT Lab (castings, reference blocks) |
| Evansville | Aluminum, regional refining, coal-fired power, vehicle assembly, chemicals, river terminals | Oil & Gas Site (IRIS, PMI, corrosion UT), Storage Tank (shell and floor), NDT Lab (ET, PAUT) |
Indianapolis. The state capital’s inspection profile is shaped by precision manufacturing. Aero-engine components, diesel engine parts and transmission hardware need eddy current, penetrant and ultrasonic inspection against strict acceptance criteria, and aerospace work in particular leaves no room for a technician who has forgotten how a real crack indication differs from a geometry signal. The Aircraft Hangar environment and the eddy current scenarios in the NDT Lab are the natural fit, alongside weld scenarios for the city’s structural and process fabricators.
Gary. Gary sits in the middle of the Calumet steel and refining belt, where technicians move between mills, the refinery corridor, tank farms and terminals. Turnaround work arrives in intense bursts: corrosion UT on piping circuits, IRIS on exchanger bundles, PMI on replacement alloy components, and radiography or PAUT on new welds. The Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments let Gary-area crews rehearse those jobs before the unit comes down.
South Bend. South Bend and neighbouring Elkhart County live on fabrication: trailers, RV frames, structural assemblies, castings and machined parts. Visual weld inspection, magnetic particle testing on carbon steel welds, and penetrant on non-ferrous components are everyday tasks. The Welding Workshop environment, with its weld coupons and fabrication joints, gives new hires in these shops a way to learn defect recognition before they are signing off production welds.
Evansville. Evansville’s Ohio River setting brings together aluminum production, coal-fired generation, a regional refinery, chemical plants and barge terminals. Outage work on boilers and heat exchangers makes IRIS tube inspection and PMI relevant, and tank and terminal work calls for shell thickness surveys and floor screening. Evansville technicians can use the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments to keep those less frequent skills warm between outages.
Environments and methods that match Indiana work
Practical NDT is built around five workplace environments and twelve methods. Here is how they line up with the jobs Indiana technicians actually do.
Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). This is the process-plant environment: weld inspection, corrosion work, tube inspection and screening in a refinery-style setting. For the Whiting corridor, the Mount Vernon refinery and the chemical plants along the Ohio River, it covers the jobs that dominate turnarounds. You can practise UT thickness readings on corroded piping, IRIS on heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening on long pipe runs, and PMI alloy verification on components where a mix-up between carbon steel and a chrome-moly or stainless grade could cause a failure.
Storage Tank. A full-size tank where you run UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening. Northwest Indiana’s refinery and terminal tank farms and the river terminals in the southwest make this directly relevant. Floor screening by MFL followed by UT prove-up is a workflow many technicians only perform a few times a year, so practising it between jobs pays off.
Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints, inspected by VT, MT, PT, UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT. This environment suits Indiana’s fabrication shops, structural steel erectors and pressure-vessel builders, and it is where new trainees learn to tell porosity from slag, lack of fusion from incomplete penetration, and a toe crack from undercut.
Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection, mainly eddy current, penetrant and visual, plus UT on composite and bonded structures. Central Indiana’s aero-engine and aviation maintenance work, and the airline and cargo maintenance at Indianapolis International Airport, make this environment useful for technicians who move between industrial and aerospace work.
NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks: calibration practice, DAC and TCG construction, angle-beam setup, eddy current reference standards and radiographic image interpretation. For the steel mills and foundries in Gary and South Bend, the lab environment is where you rehearse UT on plate, forgings and castings before you touch production material.
Across all five environments, the twelve methods are PT, MT and VT on the surface side; contact UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT for volumetric work; ET and MFL for electromagnetic inspection; plus LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS internal rotary UT and PMI alloy verification. There are 33 guided lessons for people who want structured learning rather than free practice.
Regulators and requirements Indiana technicians meet
Indiana has its own regulatory landscape, and a practice tool should respect it rather than pretend it does not exist.
Radiation safety. Indiana is not an NRC Agreement State. That means the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses and inspects the use of radioactive materials such as the iridium-192 and cobalt-60 sources used in industrial gamma radiography in Indiana. The state itself, through the Indiana Department of Health’s radiological health programme, has jurisdiction over x-ray equipment, naturally occurring radioactive materials and certain other sources. Indiana has formally told the NRC it intends to pursue Agreement State status, so radiography companies should watch for changes. Radiographers working with sources must meet NRC requirements for training and certification as radiographers or radiographer’s assistants. Practical NDT’s RT scenarios teach image interpretation and exposure thinking without any radiation; they do not satisfy any radiation safety training requirement.
Boilers and pressure vessels. The Boiler and Pressure Vessel section of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, within its Division of Fire and Building Safety, registers regulated boilers and pressure vessels, runs the periodic inspection programme and licenses boiler and pressure vessel inspectors under the Indiana Boiler and Pressure Vessel Rules. Repairs and alterations commonly follow the National Board Inspection Code, and new construction follows the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
Codes you will see on Indiana jobs. Refinery and chemical plant work commonly follows API 510 (pressure vessels), API 570 (piping) and API 653 (tanks), with ASME Section V for NDT methods and ASME B31.3 for process piping. Structural and bridge work in Indiana uses AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.5, and the Indiana Department of Transportation specifies inspection for its bridges. Pipelines crossing the state fall under federal PHMSA rules in 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195, with API 1104 for pipeline welding. Aerospace work follows the manufacturer and customer specifications, often built around NAS 410.
Personnel certification. Most Indiana industrial employers certify NDT personnel under a written practice based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, which requires documented training, experience and written and practical examinations. Some aerospace employers use NAS 410 and some international customers ask for other schemes; those are requirements local employers may set, and Practical NDT is simply practice that helps whichever scheme applies. Atlantis’s own NDT training is aligned with SNT-TC-1A.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Indiana
New trainees. Northwest Indiana mills and refineries, Indianapolis manufacturers and Evansville plants all hire people who have never done NDT before. The guided lessons start with fundamentals: how a probe couples, what the A-scan is telling you, why a yoke has to be oriented two ways, how dwell time affects a penetrant indication. A trainee can repeat a scenario ten times in an evening, which is not possible when practice depends on a free hour in a lab and a supervisor who is on shift. The scoring shows what they missed and why, so they arrive at their first supervised job with some pattern recognition already built.
Working technicians. An Indiana Level II might spend three months on routine thickness readings and then be asked to run PAUT on a critical weld or IRIS on a bundle during a turnaround. Skills fade when they are not used, and rare defect types are rarer still. Practical NDT lets a working technician refresh on the specific scenario before the job: stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen damage, lack of sidewall fusion, pitting under insulation, tube wall loss from erosion. It is a quick and honest way to find out you are rusty before the client does.
Level IIIs and team leads. A Level III can build scenario sets and assign them to a crew, then compare results objectively. Before a Whiting-corridor turnaround or a power plant outage, a lead can run the whole crew through the relevant methods and see who needs extra coaching, which methods have thin coverage, and where the team could use another qualified person. That kind of benchmarking is hard to do with physical specimens because every technician has to use the same limited set of blocks, and they soon learn the answers.
Practice vs certification
This needs saying plainly: Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not issue a certificate of qualification, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that an SNT-TC-1A written practice requires. Under SNT-TC-1A the employer certifies personnel after documented training, experience and passing written and practical examinations, and the practical exam is performed on real parts with real equipment under the oversight of a Level III. A simulator cannot substitute for that, and we do not claim it can.
What Practical NDT does is make the time before and between those formal steps count. A trainee who has worked through dozens of weld and casting scenarios arrives at the practical exam with better defect recognition and a more disciplined procedure. A technician preparing to recertify can rehearse method steps and interpretation. Formal training still happens in class and in the lab, and Atlantis runs that side through its NDT training and certification courses. Practical NDT sits alongside that training as extra practice. It does not replace it. Radiation safety training for radiographers is a separate legal requirement in Indiana under NRC rules, and the simulator does not meet it.
Bring Practical NDT to your Indiana team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and the scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training. If you run an inspection company in the Calumet Region, a QA department at a central Indiana manufacturer, a plant inspection group on the Ohio River, or a training programme at a college or union hall, we can show you how the simulator fits your work.
A typical rollout starts with a demo focused on your methods and environments. For a refinery-corridor inspection contractor that might mean the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments; for an aerospace shop, the Aircraft Hangar and eddy current scenarios; for a fabrication shop, the Welding Workshop. Then we agree which trainees, technicians and Level IIIs get access, and your leads start assigning scenario sets. Pricing is quote on request and depends on team size and scope. Request an Indiana Practical NDT demo, or email info@atlantisndt.com. Teams that also need document control, technician certification tracking or equipment calibration records can ask about Atlantis ERP in the same conversation, and asset owners can ask about Digital Twins for visualising inspection data.
If you are not sure which environment fits your crew, tell us about your Indiana inspection work and we will suggest a starting scenario set.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an NDT simulator I can use in Indiana without travelling to a training centre?
Yes. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app, so a technician in Gary, Indianapolis, South Bend or Evansville can practise from home, a site office or a training room. You still need in-person training and a practical exam on real specimens for certification, but the practice itself does not depend on location.
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?
No. Under an SNT-TC-1A written practice, the practical examination is done on real specimens with real equipment, overseen by a Level III. Practical NDT is preparation and ongoing practice. It helps you arrive at that exam ready, but it cannot stand in for it and it does not grant certification.
Which methods matter most for Indiana refinery and steel work?
For the Whiting corridor and the mills, UT thickness and corrosion work, IRIS on exchanger tubes, PMI on alloy components, MT on carbon steel welds and structures, and RT or PAUT on new welds come up constantly. Tank farms add shell UT and MFL floor screening. All of these are in the Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank and Welding Workshop environments.
Is it useful for aerospace inspectors in Indianapolis?
Yes. The Aircraft Hangar environment has 54 jobs covering airframe and component inspection with eddy current, penetrant, visual and ultrasonic methods. It is practice, not a substitute for the qualification your employer requires under its own written practice or NAS 410, but it keeps interpretation skills sharp between assignments.
Does the RT simulation count toward Indiana or NRC radiation safety training?
No. Radiographers using sealed sources in Indiana must meet NRC training and certification requirements, because Indiana is not an Agreement State. Practical NDT’s RT scenarios involve no radiation. They build image interpretation and technique thinking and do not meet any regulatory radiation safety requirement.
