Method spotlight: UT and MT for a refinery-and-steel town
Whiting's inspection market has two personalities, and the methods follow them. On the refinery side, the work is pressure equipment: thickness readings at corrosion monitoring locations, weld inspection on piping repairs and new tie-ins, and PAUT or TOFD on thick welds where radiography would mean clearing a busy turnaround area. The BP Whiting Refinery processes a large share of heavy crude after its modernisation project a little over a decade ago, and heavier, higher-sulfur crude slates generally put more weight on corrosion monitoring and well-kept thickness data. A UT Level II who can produce repeatable readings and report them cleanly is valuable here.
On the steel side, the work is structural and mechanical. Integrated steel mills run overhead cranes, ladles, rolling equipment and heavy structures under constant load and heat. Radiography licensing and site access in Whiting
This is the part of the Whiting picture that changed most recently. Indiana signed an agreement with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission on 24 September 2026 and became the 41st Agreement State, with the agreement taking effect on 30 September 2026. From that date the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's Radioactive Materials Control Program, rather than the NRC, licenses and inspects most radioactive-materials users in the state, including industrial users. Indiana says it will honour NRC-issued licences that were in place when the agreement took effect. Radiography companies working in Whiting should still confirm with IDHS how their licence, renewals and inspections are handled now.
X-ray equipment was already state business before the agreement. Indiana requires radiation machine facilities, including industrial X-ray users, to register with the Indiana Department of Health under the radiological health rules in 410 IAC 5, which include a section on non-medical radiography. Radiographers themselves need a recognised radiographer certification, typically ASNT's Industrial Radiography Radiation Safety Personnel (IRRSP) certification or an Agreement State card. Refineries, chemical plants and mills on the Illinois side of the Chicago area are regulated by Illinois's own radiation programme, so a crew working on both sides needs reciprocity arrangements for each jurisdiction before taking a source across the border. Your radiation safety officer handles this; trainees just need to know it exists.
Site access is the other gate. Facilities with waterfront operations on Lake Michigan, the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal or the port at Burns Harbor may fall under the Maritime Transportation Security Act, in which case a TSA TWIC card is needed for unescorted access to secure areas. Not every assignment needs one, so ask the site. Refineries and mills also run their own contractor safety orientations, drug testing and permit-to-work training.
