Inland Texas industries and the methods they ask for

Inland Texas is not one market. Away from the refinery corridor, NDT demand splits into several distinct economies, each with its own codes and preferred methods. The table below is a starting point for deciding which training a crew needs. API, AWS and NAS documents are named as the code context employers work to; Atlantis training itself is ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based and does not provide API, CWI or NAS 410 certification.

The sub-regions in more detail

San Antonio and south-central Texas

Port San Antonio, on the former Kelly Air Force Base, hosts aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul operations alongside the training and flying missions of Joint Base San Antonio. Aviation NDT here is dominated by eddy current, ultrasonic and penetrant inspection of airframes, engines and components, and employers commonly run personnel programmes to NAS 410 alongside or instead of SNT-TC-1A. Toyota's truck plant and its on-site suppliers bring weld and component inspection, and the Eagle Ford shale to the south brings pipeline and production work. Austin and central Texas

Central Texas has become one of the largest construction markets in the country for advanced manufacturing. Samsung's semiconductor fab in Taylor, Tesla's gigafactory east of Austin and the supplier plants around them need structural steel welds inspected to AWS D1.1 and process and high-purity piping examined under ASME B31.3. Testing agencies and contractors working these projects need VT, UT, MT, RT and PT technicians certified under a written practice. See the Austin training page.

Dallas-Fort Worth

The Metroplex combines two economies. Fort Worth is home to large military aircraft and rotorcraft manufacturers, including Lockheed Martin's F-35 production and Bell's headquarters, plus aviation MRO at the region's airports, all of which use ET, UT, PAUT and PT at Level II and Level III. Dallas hosts the headquarters of major pipeline and midstream operators and of rail car manufacturer Trinity Industries, along with a deep fabrication base. Midland, Odessa and the Permian Basin

The Permian Basin is the most intensive oilfield NDT market in the country. Operators, midstream companies and service contractors need RT and UT crews for pipeline girth welds under API 1104, PAUT for automated weld inspection, UT thickness surveys on gathering lines and tank batteries, and MT and PT on fabricated equipment. Midland carries more of the operator and engineering offices; Odessa more of the service yards and fabrication shops. El Paso and far west Texas

El Paso combines a refinery, the large Fort Bliss installation, rail yards and a manufacturing economy tied closely to plants across the border in Ciudad Juarez. That mix means UT, RT, MT and PT for refinery turnarounds, VT and MT for fabrication and rail, and ET and PT for aviation and component work. See the El Paso training page.

Radiography licensing and certification in Texas

Texas is an NRC Agreement State. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Radiation Control Program licenses radioactive materials, including industrial radiography sources, and its industrial radiography rule sets requirements for radiographers and radiographer trainees working under a Texas licence. That applies statewide, from Permian pipeline crews to fabrication shops in the Metroplex. In practice:

• the employer holds the radioactive-materials licence, or works under a licence that authorises its radiography;
• radiographers and trainees must meet DSHS training, certification and personnel-monitoring requirements in addition to their employer's SNT-TC-1A certification;
• SNT-TC-1A RT training covers radiation-safety principles, but it does not replace the state's radiographer certification or the employer's licence conditions.

Confirm the current requirements with DSHS before an RT crew mobilises. Atlantis does not claim state approval for any training course. Work at refineries and gas plants also brings site safety orientation and access requirements set by the owner.

SNT-TC-1A certification path for inland Texas technicians

Inland Texas employers almost all certify technicians to ASNT SNT-TC-1A, an employer-based system. The steps are the same in every city on this page:

1. The employer's written practice sets the training hours, experience, examinations and vision requirements for each method and level. If you don't have one, or it is out of date, see written practice development.
2. Formal training in the method and level, delivered live online, onsite or blended. The recommended minimums by method and level are in the training requirements matrix.
3. On-the-job experience logged in the method under supervision, documented in a form an auditor can trace.
4. General, specific and practical examinations administered by a Level III, with the practical on real specimens.
5. Vision examination, near vision and colour contrast, on the schedule the written practice sets.
6. Certification by the employer, followed by recertification on the written practice's cycle.

Local options compared, honestly

Inland Texas technicians have several routes into NDT, and the right one depends on where you are in your career.

• Public technical colleges. Texas State Technical College's welding programmes include NDT and quality-control content, which suits people entering the trade through welding. Community colleges across the region run welding and industrial-technology programmes; check each college's current catalogue for NDT content.
• ASNT local sections. ASNT sections in Texas run technical meetings and networking events, useful for anyone building a career or preparing for Level III.
• Employer in-house programmes. Larger operators, service companies and manufacturers train and certify under their own written practices, often with an outside Level III.
