NDT Simulator and Hands-On NDT Practice in El Paso, Texas
El Paso is an industrial city that most of the Texas NDT market overlooks because it sits so far from the Gulf Coast. Yet it has its own crude oil refinery, with a capacity of roughly 133,000 barrels per calendar day, sitting at the end of pipelines that bring Permian Basin crude west; it is the namesake and historic home of one of the major interstate natural gas transmission systems in the Southwest; it shares a binational manufacturing economy with Ciudad Juárez across the Rio Grande; and it is home to Fort Bliss, one of the largest military installations in the country. Each of those sectors needs qualified inspectors, and El Paso's distance from the big Houston training labs makes practice hard to come by. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Practical NDT brings it to El Paso: an immersive, 3D, game-like environment reached from a browser or app, with 12 methods, 33 guided lessons and five workplace environments. For El Paso, the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments carry the refinery and pipeline work, IRIS and PMI address exchangers and alloys, and the NDT Lab and Aircraft Hangar support manufacturing and aviation maintenance.
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, and it does not replace the hands-on practical examination on real specimens that an employer's written practice requires. The rest of this page explains how it fits El Paso.
Why Hands-On NDT Practice Matters in El Paso's Refining Sector
A refinery is the most inspection-intensive asset most technicians will ever work on. Crude and vacuum units, reformers, hydrotreaters, alkylation units, heaters, exchangers, columns, drums and miles of piping all degrade in their own ways. Corrosion under insulation, high-temperature sulfidation, hydrogen damage, erosion at elbows, cracking at welds and fouled or thinned exchanger tubes are part of the normal inspection landscape. Much of this work is concentrated into turnarounds, when units are shut down and opened up and inspection crews are expected to cover a vast scope in a few weeks.
That pattern creates a skills problem. A local technician may do intense exchanger tube inspection during a turnaround and then spend months on routine thickness readings or out-of-town work. By the next turnaround, the fine points of reading IRIS data, distinguishing pitting from general wall loss, or setting up a phased array scan on a corroded nozzle have faded. Contractors who bring in travelling crews for the turnaround face the opposite problem: they need to know quickly who is actually strong on which method.
Physical practice options in El Paso are limited. The city is a long way from the specimen libraries and training labs concentrated along the Gulf Coast, reference blocks are needed for calibration on live jobs, and real tube bundles with known flaws are hard to come by. Radiography practice is constrained by law: in Texas, industrial radiography sources and X-ray equipment are licensed and inspected by the Texas Department of State Health Services radiation control programme. Practical NDT lets El Paso technicians practise any of these tasks as often as they like, with scored feedback and no consumed specimens, source exposure or unit downtime. Safety benefits too: a technician who has already rehearsed a job sequence spends less time improvising in an operating unit.
Oil and Gas Site Scenarios: IRIS, PMI and Corrosion Practice
The Oil & Gas Site environment is the largest in Practical NDT, with 73 jobs set in a process plant. It covers weld inspection, corrosion assessment, tube inspection and screening practice. For an El Paso refinery technician, three job families are especially relevant.
IRIS (internal rotary inspection system) jobs simulate ultrasonic inspection of heat exchanger and boiler tubes from the inside. The user prepares the set-up, calibrates on a reference tube, runs the probe and interprets the rotating display, deciding whether wall loss is inside or outside, general or pitting, and how deep. Exchangers are frequent turnaround bottlenecks, and IRIS interpretation is a skill that benefits directly from repetition. PMI jobs teach alloy verification on piping, fittings and valves, a critical control in a refinery, where the wrong material in a high-temperature or hydrogen service line can fail catastrophically. Corrosion jobs cover ultrasonic thickness grids, localised wall-loss mapping, and decisions about whether follow-up with a more advanced technique is needed.
Weld jobs cover inspection of piping and nozzle welds with contact UT and PAUT, and screening jobs introduce long-range ultrasonic testing (LRUT) with guided waves for long pipe runs. Every job is scored the moment it ends. The user sees what was found, missed or over-called, and why, which is the feedback loop that builds judgment.
Methods You Can Practise, From Tank Floors to Machined Parts
Practical NDT covers 12 methods. The surface methods are penetrant testing (PT), magnetic particle testing (MT) and visual testing (VT). The volumetric methods are contact ultrasonic testing (UT), phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) and radiographic testing (RT). The electromagnetic methods are eddy current testing (ET) and magnetic flux leakage (MFL). The specialist techniques are LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS internal rotary ultrasonic testing, and PMI for alloy verification.
The Storage Tank environment provides a full-size tank for ultrasonic shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening. Refinery tank farms and product terminals around El Paso store crude, intermediates and fuels, and tank floor corrosion is invisible from the outside, so MFL screening followed by UT prove-up is a core skill. The Welding Workshop environment (52 jobs) provides weld coupons and fabrication joints for MT, PT, UT, PAUT and TOFD practice, which supports both refinery maintenance welding and the fabrication shops that serve the region.
The NDT Lab environment (52 jobs) offers bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration and method fundamentals, relevant to the manufacturing plants on both sides of the border that inspect castings, forgings, machined parts and welded assemblies. Radiography jobs let users practise exposure geometry and image interpretation on welds with no radiation at all, which is especially valuable for trainees still accumulating supervised hours under their employer's programme.
Aircraft Hangar Practice for El Paso's Aviation and Defense Maintenance
Fort Bliss, including Biggs Army Airfield, anchors a large defense presence in El Paso, and El Paso International Airport supports commercial, cargo and general aviation. Military and defense aviation maintenance involves NDT on rotor and airframe components, fittings and structure, with eddy current, penetrant, magnetic particle and ultrasonic methods doing most of the work. Military inspectors follow military technical orders and service programmes, and civilian contractors follow the requirements of their contracts and the aircraft manufacturers. Practical NDT is not part of any of those programmes, but it can help a technician keep aviation fundamentals sharp.
The Aircraft Hangar environment contains 54 jobs covering airframe and component inspection. Users run eddy current scans around fastener holes and structure, work through penetrant inspection with correct dwell and removal, and use ultrasonic methods where corrosion or subsurface damage is suspected. Many El Paso technicians move between industries over a career, for example from military aviation maintenance into refinery or pipeline inspection or the reverse. A platform that spans both the Aircraft Hangar and the Oil & Gas Site lets them build and maintain both skill sets. None of the installations or organisations mentioned here is an Atlantis customer or partner; they are named only to describe the local industry.
Built for Every Skill Level, From Trainee to Level III
New trainees follow guided fundamentals. The 33 guided lessons explain method principles and walk the trainee through equipment set-up before opening up free jobs, with difficulty rising as they succeed. Someone coming from a community college programme, a welding shop or military service can build a solid grasp of calibration, coverage and interpretation before their first day in an operating unit.
Working technicians use the platform for refreshers and rare-defect drills between assignments. Before a turnaround, a technician can spend focused time on IRIS and PMI jobs; before a pipeline scope, on weld characterisation with PAUT and TOFD. Defects that are uncommon on any single job, such as stress corrosion cracking at a weld, hydrogen blistering or a lamination near a nozzle, can be practised as often as needed.
Level III inspectors and team leads use Practical NDT to build and assign scenario sets, benchmark a crew objectively on identical jobs, and find coverage gaps. For a turnaround manager, that means evidence of who is strong on which method before assigning the scope, rather than relying only on résumés. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training, and the scoring rewards the steps a qualified inspector would actually follow.
NDT Practical Exam Preparation That Complements ASNT SNT-TC-1A Training
Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness platform. It does not grant certification and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A and an employer's written practice require. Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer certifies its personnel after they meet training and experience requirements and pass general, specific and practical examinations; the practical exam is done with real equipment on real specimens.
What the platform does is improve readiness. A candidate who has calibrated, scanned and characterised many simulated indications, and who has had every error explained, walks into the practical exam with a practised routine. A Level III can also see which candidates are ready before booking scarce specimen and examiner time.
Refinery owners and clients may specify additional requirements for inspection personnel, such as owner-user inspector credentials for certain roles or client-specific qualification tests. Those are market requirements an El Paso contractor must meet directly; Atlantis does not administer them. For structured instruction, Atlantis offers NDT training and certification aligned with SNT-TC-1A, and Practical NDT is designed to sit alongside that training, never in place of it.
El Paso's Industrial Geography: Refinery, Pipelines, Border Plants and Water
El Paso's refinery sits in the east-central part of the city and processes crude delivered largely from the Permian Basin, producing fuels for West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and northern Mexico. Pipelines and product terminals connect it to that market. Natural gas transmission infrastructure crosses the region, carrying Permian and San Juan gas west toward Arizona and California and south into Mexico, with compressor stations and meter sites that need construction inspection and integrity work. Intrastate pipelines are overseen by the Railroad Commission of Texas, and interstate pipeline safety by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
Across the river, Ciudad Juárez hosts a large concentration of export manufacturing plants, and many of them are paired with support, logistics and engineering operations on the El Paso side. Automotive components, electrical equipment and medical devices are all part of that mix, and their suppliers use visual, penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic and eddy current inspection on castings, forgings, welds and machined parts. The city also operates a large inland desalination plant and extensive water infrastructure, and power plants serving the region add boiler, piping and tank inspection work.
Talent comes from the University of Texas at El Paso, known for its engineering and advanced manufacturing research, and from El Paso Community College's technical programmes, as well as from veterans leaving Fort Bliss. That mix of refinery, pipeline, manufacturing, utility and defense work is exactly why a multi-environment practice platform is useful here. All of these organisations are regional context only; none is an Atlantis customer or partner.
Virtual NDT Training for a City Far From the Gulf Coast Labs
Distance is the defining practical challenge for El Paso NDT companies. Sending a technician to a Houston lab for practice means days of travel and lost billable time. Bringing specimen sets to El Paso means buying and maintaining an expensive library. Practical NDT offers another route: practice that happens where the technician already is, on a laptop or tablet, in short sessions that fit around shifts.
For a small El Paso inspection company, that can mean a Level III setting a weekly scenario set for the whole team, checking scores, and then using supervised time on real equipment for what only real equipment can teach: probe feel, couplant handling, surface preparation and working at height or in confined spaces. For a larger contractor staffing a turnaround, it can mean screening incoming technicians against the same simulated jobs so assignments match strengths. In both cases, physical specimens are preserved for calibration and exam use, and no one needs to travel for practice.
Bringing Practical NDT to Your El Paso Team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and deploying it in El Paso requires no lab and no new hardware. Users sign in through a browser or app. A typical rollout starts with a demonstration for the owner, inspection manager or Level III, followed by a pilot with a few trainees and working technicians. The Level III assigns scenario sets that mirror the company's real work, for example Oil & Gas Site IRIS and PMI jobs for turnaround crews, Storage Tank MFL jobs for tank inspectors, NDT Lab jobs for manufacturing inspectors, and Aircraft Hangar jobs for aviation technicians. Pilot results show strengths and gaps, which then shape a wider rollout.
Pricing is quoted on request because each deployment is sized to the team and the environments it needs; like every Atlantis product, Practical NDT is affordable, accessible and fully customizable. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?
No. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A the employer certifies personnel through its written practice after training, experience and examinations, including a practical exam on real specimens. Practical NDT is preparation for that exam and for field work; it is not a substitute and it does not issue certificates.
What experience level is it for?
All levels. New trainees follow the 33 guided lessons, working technicians use it for refreshers and rare-defect drills between assignments, and Level III inspectors build scenario sets, benchmark crews and find coverage gaps.
Which environments suit El Paso refinery and pipeline work?
The Oil & Gas Site environment, with 73 jobs covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice including IRIS and PMI, and the Storage Tank environment for shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening. The Welding Workshop adds weld characterisation with UT, PAUT and TOFD.
Is it useful for aviation maintenance technicians in El Paso?
It can help with fundamentals. The Aircraft Hangar environment offers 54 airframe and component jobs with eddy current, penetrant and ultrasonic practice. It is not part of any military or manufacturer programme, and technicians must still meet the requirements of their own employer and contract.
Can I get NDT training online in Texas through Atlantis?
Practical NDT is online practice. For structured classroom and hands-on instruction, see Atlantis NDT training, which follows SNT-TC-1A. Both are designed to work together, and certification remains the responsibility of your employer's written practice.
