NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Texas
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Texas is the state where that idea matters most. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like inspection environment that runs in a browser or app. Technicians walk into a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, pick up a probe or a yoke, and work real inspection jobs on realistic welds, pipe spools, pressure vessels, castings and structural members. Every job is scored instantly, so a trainee learns what a lack-of-fusion indication actually looks like and a working technician can drill the rare defects that only turn up a few times a career. Texas runs on inspection: the refinery and petrochemical corridors of the Houston Ship Channel and the Golden Triangle, the Permian and Eagle Ford basins, thousands of miles of intrastate pipeline, Gulf ports and shipyards, LNG export terminals, and a large aerospace and defense manufacturing base around Fort Worth and San Antonio. All of that work depends on inspectors whose hands and eyes stay sharp. Practical NDT gives Texas crews a way to practise between turnarounds and assignments without booking lab time or consuming specimens.
Texas's NDT workforce and where the work is
No other state has quite the same spread of NDT demand, and it helps to look at it region by region, because the inspection work in Midland looks very different from the work in Fort Worth or Beaumont.
The Upper Gulf Coast and Houston Ship Channel. Houston, Pasadena, Deer Park, Baytown, Texas City and the plants along the channel form one of the densest concentrations of refining and petrochemical capacity in the world. Here the NDT workload is dominated by in-service inspection under API 510, API 570 and API 653: thickness surveys on process piping, corrosion under insulation screening, weld inspection on repairs and alterations, heat-exchanger tube inspection during shutdowns, and positive material identification on alloy piping. Turnaround season brings a surge of contract technicians who must be productive on day one. Freeport, to the south, adds a major chemical complex and an LNG export terminal, while Galveston adds marine and offshore rig repair work on Pelican Island.
The Golden Triangle. Beaumont, Port Arthur, Nederland and Orange sit on the Sabine-Neches waterway, home to some of the largest refineries in North America, crude export and storage terminals, chemical plants and a long shipbuilding tradition. Inspection here is heavy, repetitive and high-consequence: tank floors, storage tank shells, piping circuits, fired heater tubes and pressure vessels.
South Texas and the Coastal Bend. Corpus Christi has become a leading crude oil export gateway, with refineries, an LNG export terminal and petrochemical plants around the port. Victoria sits among Eagle Ford gathering systems and Coastal Bend chemical plants. Brownsville has its deepwater port, ship recycling, a large LNG export project under construction and commercial space launch activity at Boca Chica. Laredo is the busiest inland land port on the US-Mexico border, driving demand for inspection of trade infrastructure, rail and fabricated equipment moving through it.
West Texas and the Permian Basin. Midland and the surrounding basin are the center of US oil production. NDT here is about pipelines, gathering lines, compressor stations, tank batteries, pressure vessels and the welds that hold it all together, plus drill pipe and oil country tubular goods inspection. Amarillo and the Panhandle add natural gas, helium history, refining nearby at Borger, and aerospace assembly. Abilene combines oil and gas service work with Dyess Air Force Base and a growing wind-energy footprint. El Paso has its refinery, Fort Bliss and a cross-border manufacturing economy.
North Texas. Dallas and Fort Worth host one of the largest aerospace and defense manufacturing clusters in the country, including combat aircraft production at Air Force Plant 4 and rotorcraft manufacturing, alongside pipeline company headquarters, the Barnett Shale and a large general manufacturing base. Wichita Falls adds Sheppard Air Force Base and aerospace component work. Aerospace NDT here means eddy current, ultrasonic and penetrant inspection to tight written procedures, with employers often following NAS 410 for aerospace personnel qualification.
Central and East Texas. San Antonio is a major aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul center at Port San Antonio and Joint Base San Antonio, and a service base for the Eagle Ford. Waco has aircraft modification and manufacturing work around its airport. College Station is home to Texas A&M and its engineering research. Longview anchors the historic East Texas oil field and a manufacturing belt, and Conroe and Sugar Land house oilfield equipment makers, engineering offices and energy service firms serving the whole Gulf Coast.

Houston is the headquarters city of the energy industry and the base for many of the inspection companies that staff Gulf Coast turnarounds. Technicians here move between refineries, chemical plants, fabrication shops and offshore project yards, often in the same month. The Oil & Gas Site environment, with its weld, corrosion, tube and screening jobs, is the natural fit, and the Storage Tank environment covers the tank farms that ring the Ship Channel.
Dallas blends aerospace and defense manufacturing with the headquarters of pipeline and midstream operators and a broad industrial base. Crews working aerospace components benefit most from the Aircraft Hangar environment and eddy current practice, while pipeline integrity engineers use the Oil & Gas Site jobs to keep field skills current.
Beaumont is refinery country. Turnarounds here involve huge volumes of UT thickness readings, exchanger tube inspection and storage tank work, which is why IRIS, MFL floor screening and the Storage Tank environment are the most relevant practice sets for local crews and their supervisors.
Corpus Christi has grown into a leading crude export port, with refineries, an LNG export terminal and petrochemical plants around the bay. New construction and in-service inspection run side by side, so PAUT and TOFD weld practice matter as much as corrosion surveys and tank floor screening.
Midland sits at the center of the Permian Basin. Pipeline welds, gathering lines, compressor stations and tank batteries dominate local NDT. Radiography and UT of girth welds, magnetic particle on fabricated components and LRUT screening of road crossings and pipe racks are the skills Permian crews use most.
Port Arthur hosts some of the largest refining capacity in North America plus LNG and chemical plants. The scale of the units means long shutdown campaigns with exchanger bundles, alloy piping and vessels, making IRIS tube inspection and PMI alloy verification especially valuable to practise.
Texas City combines refineries, petrochemical units and a working port on Galveston Bay. Piping circuit inspection, corrosion monitoring and alloy verification are daily work, and LRUT screening of long pipe runs is a useful skill for technicians moving into integrity roles.
Freeport is built around one of the largest chemical manufacturing complexes in the country, an LNG export terminal on Quintana Island and Port Freeport. Cryogenic and high-alloy piping, large vessels and tank farms make TOFD, PMI and tank practice directly relevant.
Galveston is a port and marine city, with shipyards on Pelican Island that repair offshore rigs and vessels. Structural welds, hull and deck repairs and marine fabrication call for PAUT, magnetic particle and visual weld inspection, all covered in the Welding Workshop.
San Antonio is a major aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul center, with heavy maintenance at Port San Antonio and military aviation at Joint Base San Antonio. Eddy current on fastener holes and skins, penetrant on components and UT on structures are the core skills, all practised in the Aircraft Hangar.
Victoria sits among Eagle Ford gathering systems and Coastal Bend chemical plants, with a barge port linking it to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Plant piping, pressure equipment and pipeline welds keep local technicians busy, and PMI and RT are practical daily skills.
Abilene is home to Dyess Air Force Base, a hub for oilfield services on the edge of the Permian, and a wide ring of wind farms. That mix makes weld inspection, magnetic particle on structural members and eddy current on aircraft components all relevant.
Amarillo anchors the Texas Panhandle, with military tiltrotor aircraft assembly, natural gas production and processing, and refining nearby at Borger. Aerospace technicians benefit from ET and PT practice in the Aircraft Hangar, while gas-plant crews work the Oil & Gas Site.
Longview grew up on the East Texas oil field and today mixes energy with heavy manufacturing and fabrication. Shop fabrication inspection, from RT and UT on pressure welds to MT on structural parts, is the everyday work here, which maps neatly to the Welding Workshop.
Laredo is the busiest land port on the US-Mexico border, moving huge volumes of rail and truck freight. Inspection demand comes from rail equipment, bridges, cranes, fabricated structures and industrial goods, so visual, magnetic particle and UT fundamentals are the core practice set.
Brownsville combines a deepwater port with ship recycling yards, a major LNG export project under construction and commercial space launch activity at nearby Boca Chica. New-build welds and large tanks make PAUT, TOFD, RT and the Storage Tank environment useful to practise.
El Paso has a refinery, the large Fort Bliss military installation and a cross-border manufacturing economy with Ciudad Juarez. Plant piping and manufactured components both need inspection, so the Oil & Gas Site and NDT Lab cover the ground.
Waco has aircraft modification and maintenance activity around its airport alongside a steady manufacturing base. Eddy current, UT and penetrant practice in the Aircraft Hangar supports technicians who work on airframes and components.
College Station is home to Texas A&M University, one of the largest engineering schools in the country. Students and early-career engineers use the NDT Lab to see all 12 methods in action before they ever step into a plant.
Conroe and the north Houston corridor host oilfield equipment makers, machine shops and fabricators. Shop inspection of forgings, welds and machined parts calls for UT, MT and PT fundamentals, practised in the NDT Lab and Welding Workshop.
Pasadena lines the Houston Ship Channel with refineries and chemical plants. Exchanger bundles, alloy piping and long pipe racks make IRIS, PMI and LRUT the most relevant Oil & Gas Site practice.
Deer Park is a refining and petrochemical town where tank farms and process units sit side by side. UT thickness surveys, MFL tank floor screening and PMI are core skills for local crews.
Baytown hosts some of the largest integrated refining and chemical complexes in the United States. Heavy turnaround schedules mean PAUT on welds, IRIS on exchangers and PMI on alloy circuits are everyday practice needs.
Sugar Land is an office and technology hub for energy services and engineering firms in Fort Bend County. Engineers and inspection coordinators use the simulator to understand what their field technicians actually see, in the NDT Lab and Oil & Gas Site.
Fort Worth is one of the largest aerospace manufacturing centers in the country, with combat aircraft built at Air Force Plant 4 and rotorcraft manufacturing nearby, plus Barnett Shale gas. Aerospace NDT is its core: ET, UT, PAUT on composites and PT on components.
Wichita Falls is home to Sheppard Air Force Base, a large military technical training center, and to aerospace component manufacturing and repair. The Aircraft Hangar with ET and PT practice fits local work.
Nederland sits between Beaumont and Port Arthur, with major crude oil terminals, storage tank farms and pipeline connections. Tank shell thickness surveys, MFL floor screening and LRUT screening of terminal piping are the skills that matter.
Orange sits on the Sabine River at the Louisiana border, with a chemical corridor and a long history of shipbuilding and marine fabrication. Weld inspection with PAUT and MT alongside plant UT makes the Welding Workshop and Oil & Gas Site both relevant.
Environments and methods that match Texas work
Practical NDT is built around five workplace environments and twelve methods. For Texas, the mapping is unusually complete, because the state has real demand for every one of them.
The Oil & Gas Site, with 73 jobs, is the heart of the Gulf Coast use case. It places technicians in a process plant with welds, corroded piping, heat-exchanger tubes and screening tasks. Here they practise contact UT thickness gauging and flaw detection, PAUT and TOFD on welds, IRIS internal rotary UT on exchanger and boiler tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening of long pipe runs, and PMI alloy verification to catch the wrong material in an alloy circuit. For crews heading into a Ship Channel or Golden Triangle turnaround, this is the closest thing to a warm-up lap.
The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. Texas has vast tank farms at refineries, crude terminals in Nederland and Corpus Christi, and tank batteries across the Permian. API 653 inspection work is constant, and practising floor scanning patterns and shell survey layouts pays off directly.
The Welding Workshop, with 52 jobs, suits the fabrication shops of Conroe, Longview and the Houston area, the shipyards of Galveston, Orange and Brownsville, and pipeline welding in the Permian. Weld coupons and fabrication joints let technicians practise RT interpretation, UT and PAUT sizing, MT on fillet welds and VT against acceptance criteria.
The Aircraft Hangar, with 54 jobs, is built for Fort Worth, Dallas, San Antonio, Waco, Amarillo, Wichita Falls and Abilene. Airframe and component inspection with eddy current, penetrant and UT is where precision and procedure discipline matter most.
The NDT Lab, with 52 jobs, is where fundamentals are built on bench specimens and reference blocks. It supports trainees across the state, students in College Station, and any technician who wants to revisit calibration and technique before a practical exam.
Across the twelve methods, surface methods (PT, MT, VT) build the foundation; volumetric methods (UT contact, PAUT, TOFD, RT) carry most weld and corrosion work; electromagnetic methods (ET, MFL) serve aerospace and tanks; and the specialist techniques (LRUT, IRIS, PMI) reflect exactly what Texas refinery and pipeline integrity programs ask for. 33 guided lessons tie the methods together into a structured path.
Regulators and requirements Texas technicians meet
Texas NDT work sits inside a well-defined regulatory framework, and a simulator can only help if it respects it.
Radiation safety. Texas is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography is regulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Radiation Control Program under 25 TAC section 289.255, which sets licensing and registration requirements and the state's industrial radiographer certification. Radiographers complete a formal radiation safety course, documented on-the-job training as a trainee under a qualified trainer, and state examination, and out-of-state certifications are accepted only from entities Texas recognizes. Practical NDT's RT scenarios teach image interpretation and technique thinking; they do not involve a radiation source and do not count toward any of these state requirements.
Boilers and pressure vessels. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) administers the state boiler program, including inspection of boilers by state and authorized inspectors. Pressure vessels in refineries and chemical plants are typically inspected under owner-user programs following API 510 and the National Board Inspection Code.
Pipelines. The Railroad Commission of Texas oversees intrastate pipeline safety under federal certification from PHMSA, with 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195 setting the rules for gas and hazardous liquid lines. API 1104 governs pipeline welding and its NDT acceptance criteria.
Process safety. OSHA's Process Safety Management standard, 29 CFR 1910.119, requires mechanical integrity programs for covered processes, which is why inspection of piping, vessels and relief systems is so embedded in Gulf Coast plant life. Codes commonly used include ASME Section V, VIII and B31.3, API 510, 570 and 653, and AWS D1.1 for structural welding.
Personnel qualification. Most Texas employers qualify NDT personnel through a written practice based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, with training hours, experience, and general, specific and practical examinations. Aerospace employers commonly work to NAS 410, and some international projects may also ask for ISO 9712 certificates. Those are listed here as market context only: Atlantis's training aligns with ASNT SNT-TC-1A, and Practical NDT is a practice tool that is useful regardless of scheme.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Texas
New trainees. Texas brings a steady stream of new entrants into NDT, from community college and technical programs, military transition, welding and pipefitting backgrounds, and helpers promoted on inspection crews. The hardest part of the early years is getting enough hands-on time. Practical NDT's guided fundamentals let a trainee practise probe handling, couplant, calibration against reference blocks, scan coverage and indication interpretation as many times as they need, with instant feedback, before they are trusted on a live unit.
Working technicians. A Level II who spent six months on Permian pipeline RT may be sent to a Baytown turnaround to run PAUT or IRIS. Skills fade between assignments, and rare defects such as stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen damage or tube pitting do not show up on demand. The simulator lets technicians run refreshers on rare-defect scenarios between jobs, so they arrive ready rather than learning on the client's equipment.
Level IIIs and team leads. For Level IIIs and inspection supervisors across Texas, the value is in building and assigning scenario sets, benchmarking crews objectively and finding coverage gaps. Before a large turnaround, a lead can assign a set of exchanger tube and alloy verification jobs to every contract technician and see who needs attention. Results give a consistent, like-for-like view across technicians from different backgrounds.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not grant a Level I, II or III, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer's written practice require. It does not satisfy Texas DSHS radiographer certification or any other state requirement. What it does is give technicians more realistic repetitions before that exam and between real jobs, so they walk into the practical with better pattern recognition and procedural habits. It complements, rather than replaces, formal classroom and hands-on NDT training and certification with Atlantis, and the formal practical exam remains the step that counts.

Frequently asked questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam in Texas?
No. It is practice and readiness only. Certification under an SNT-TC-1A written practice still requires the practical examination on real specimens, and Texas industrial radiographers still need DSHS certification. The simulator helps you prepare for those steps.
Which Texas industries is it most useful for?
Refining and petrochemical plants on the Gulf Coast, Permian and Eagle Ford pipelines and facilities, LNG terminals, storage tank farms, shipyards and marine fabrication, and aerospace manufacturing and MRO in North Texas and San Antonio. See the city table above for local detail, or ask for a demo tailored to your sector.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: guided fundamentals for new trainees, rare-defect refreshers for working technicians, and scenario building and benchmarking for Level IIIs and team leads.
Can a contractor use it to prepare crews for a turnaround?
Yes. A lead can assign Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank jobs, such as IRIS tube inspection, PMI, UT thickness surveys and MFL floor screening, to incoming technicians and review scores to see who is ready and where coverage gaps are.
Does it include radiography without radiation exposure?
Yes. RT scenarios focus on technique and image interpretation with no source involved. That makes them useful practice, but they do not count toward DSHS radiation safety training or on-the-job hours.
