NDT Simulator and Hands-On Practice in Amarillo: From Tiltrotor Assembly to Panhandle Refining
Very few cities of Amarillo’s size build military aircraft. On the east side of town, next to Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, is one of the main assembly centres for the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor. That puts aerospace-grade inspection on the Texas High Plains, alongside the Panhandle’s long history of natural gas, helium and refining. North of the city are refining and petrochemical operations near Sunray and in Borger. Northeast of town is Pantex, the country’s primary nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility. Across the region run the interstate gas pipelines, compressor stations and wind farms that tie the Panhandle together. All of this depends on inspectors who can move between very different kinds of work. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and we call it Practical NDT. It is an immersive, game-like 3D environment you open in a browser or app. You handle virtual probes, coils, yokes and penetrant, inspect realistic airframe components, welds, tubes and tanks, and get a score and feedback on every job. It is built for every skill level, from an Amarillo trainee seeing their first eddy current signal to a Level III who needs to benchmark a whole crew.
Why Hands-On NDT Practice Matters in Amarillo’s Aerospace and Energy Sectors
Aerospace and energy inspection share the same physics but reward very different habits. On an airframe or rotor component, the target is usually a small fatigue crack at a fastener hole, a radius or a lug. You need careful eddy current technique, a clear understanding of lift-off and edge effects, and patience with a procedure that leaves little room for interpretation. In a refinery or gas plant, the targets are corrosion, erosion, weld defects and material mix-ups. There you rely on thickness surveys, angle-beam and phased array weld scans, tube inspection, and alloy verification with PMI. A technician who moves between the two, or who arrives in Amarillo from an oilfield background and wants to work in aerospace, has to rebuild muscle memory for a new kind of scanning. That takes practice, and practice on real parts is hard to arrange. Aerospace reference standards and flawed components are tightly controlled, and a production floor cannot give up hardware for training. Refinery specimens with real stress corrosion cracking or high-temperature hydrogen attack are rarer still. Most Panhandle crews are also a long way from the big specimen libraries in Houston or Dallas. Practical NDT lets an Amarillo technician drill a bolt-hole eddy current scan, then a PAUT weld scan, then a PMI check on a flange, all in one sitting, with no specimen to borrow and no lab to book.
Skills also fade in the gaps between shutdowns and outages. A Panhandle refinery turnaround or a big gas plant outage can run for weeks. After that, a technician might spend months on routine thickness readings. When the next turnaround starts, the people who kept their IRIS, TOFD or PAUT skills current are the ones who can start producing reliable data on the first shift. Short, regular simulator sessions between those peaks are an easy way to keep those rarely used skills ready.
Matching Practical NDT Environments to the Panhandle
Practical NDT is organised into five workplace environments, and Amarillo is one of the few places where all five are relevant. The Aircraft Hangar environment has 54 jobs on airframe and component inspection. It is the closest fit for technicians working in or around aerospace assembly and aviation maintenance, with eddy current, penetrant, visual and ultrasonic work on structures and parts. The Oil & Gas Site environment has 73 jobs in a process plant setting, covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice. It maps directly to the refining, gas processing and compression work spread across the Panhandle. The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, which matches terminal and tank farm inspection. The Welding Workshop has 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints, which suits fabrication shops and pipeline construction. The NDT Lab has 52 bench jobs on specimens and reference blocks, and it is where new technicians should start. An Amarillo NDT company can build training paths that follow its actual contract mix: hangar work for aerospace people, plant and tank work for refinery and midstream people, and a shared lab foundation for everyone.
Methods You Can Practice: Eddy Current, Phased Array Simulator, IRIS and PMI
Practical NDT covers twelve methods. For Amarillo’s aerospace work, the most important are eddy current testing (ET), penetrant testing (PT) and visual testing (VT). The ET scenarios let you practise probe selection, impedance-plane reading, lift-off compensation and scanning around fastener holes and edges, which are the core skills for finding fatigue cracks in aircraft structures. The PT scenarios cover pre-cleaning, dwell, excess penetrant removal and developer, because a poor process can hide a real crack. For the energy side, the volumetric methods matter most. Contact ultrasonic testing (UT) works as an ultrasonic testing simulator for calibration, thickness and angle-beam weld scanning. Phased array UT (PAUT) acts as a phased array simulator for setup, sectorial scans and encoded weld coverage. Time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) trains you to size through-wall defects from tip-diffracted signals. Radiography (RT) develops film and digital interpretation. Magnetic particle testing (MT) covers ferromagnetic welds and parts. Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) covers tank floor screening. Refinery and gas plant crews will also want the three specialist techniques. IRIS inspects heat-exchanger and boiler tubes from the inside and measures wall loss and pitting. LRUT guided wave screens long pipe runs for corrosion from one probe location. PMI verifies that pipe, fittings and welds are the alloy the design calls for, which is a routine requirement in refinery work because a wrong-material component can fail quickly in hot or corrosive service. The scenarios include realistic defects: fatigue cracks, corrosion pitting, wall thinning, porosity, lack of fusion, slag, root cracking, and tube wall loss at baffles and support plates.
Built for Every Skill Level
Practical NDT adapts to the person using it. New trainees have 33 guided lessons that walk through fundamentals one step at a time: what each control on the instrument does, how to calibrate, how to scan in a pattern that gives full coverage, and how to tell a real indication from geometry or noise. Each step gives feedback, so mistakes get fixed early. Working technicians can skip straight to the job library and use it for refreshers between assignments, especially on the rare defects that real work seldom provides. An aerospace ET technician can drill cracks near fastener holes of different sizes. A refinery UT technician can practise sizing a crack in a nozzle weld they may see only once a year. Level IIIs and team leads can build scenario sets, assign them across a crew, and compare results objectively. For an Amarillo company with both aerospace and energy contracts, that is a straightforward way to see who is ready to move from one kind of work to the other, and where the gaps are, before anyone goes on site. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training, around the defects and geometries technicians actually meet in industry.
NDT Practical Exam Preparation: How It Complements Formal ASNT Training
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It does not certify anyone, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer’s written practice require. Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer is responsible for certification. The written practice sets the required training, experience and examinations, and the practical exam must be done with real equipment on real test pieces. What the simulator adds is repetition. A candidate who has run dozens of virtual scans, calibrated many times and found and sized defects in many geometries will come to the practical exam better prepared than one who only had limited bench time. For formal classroom and hands-on instruction, see Atlantis NDT training and certification. We deliver Level I and Level II programmes and support employers with SNT-TC-1A written practices. In the Amarillo market, aerospace employers may also require personnel to meet NAS 410, and some energy owners reference API inspector programmes for their own staff. Those are requirements you may meet in the local job market. Atlantis frames its training around SNT-TC-1A and does not train toward or administer those other schemes.
The Amarillo Industrial Picture: High Plains Aerospace, Gas, Helium and Refining
Amarillo’s industrial base is unusual because it combines high-precision manufacturing with heavy energy infrastructure. The aerospace side is the tiltrotor assembly centre near the airport, where V-22 airframes are assembled and delivered. Aerospace manufacturing needs a workforce that understands process control, traceability and precise surface and electromagnetic inspection. That demand shapes local training, and local institutions such as Amarillo College and West Texas A&M University in nearby Canyon feed technicians and engineers into regional employers. The energy side is older. The Panhandle and Hugoton gas fields made this one of the most important natural gas regions in the country. The helium found with that gas made Amarillo the centre of the federal helium programme for much of the twentieth century, as the Helium Monument downtown still reminds visitors. Gas gathering, processing plants, compressor stations and large interstate pipelines still cross the region, and they all need weld inspection, corrosion monitoring and integrity screening. North of the city, the refinery near Sunray and the refining and petrochemical operations in Borger bring the full range of plant inspection: tube bundles, pressure vessels, piping circuits, tanks, and alloy verification during turnarounds. Pantex, northeast of Amarillo, works under its own strict federal safety and quality regime. For local NDT people, it is simply part of what makes the Panhandle a demanding place for quality and inspection work. Wind farms across the High Plains add structural and weld inspection to the mix. The result is a relatively small market where one technician may be asked to do hangar-style ET one month and plant-style IRIS or PMI the next. A simulator that covers both sides is well suited to that.
Industrial radiography in Texas is regulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services radiation control programme, which licenses radiography operations and certifies industrial radiographers. Practical NDT’s RT scenarios build interpretation skill with no source and no exposure. They do not replace the required radiation safety training or state certification.
NDT Training Online in Texas: Bringing Practical NDT to Your Amarillo Team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and it was designed for teams far from big-city training centres, like crews in the Texas Panhandle. There is nothing to ship, no specimens to maintain, and no lab to schedule. Technicians log in from a browser or the app. A typical Amarillo rollout starts with a demo. We walk your supervisor or Level III through the environments and methods that match your work, such as Aircraft Hangar and ET for aerospace or Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank, IRIS and PMI for refining and midstream. Then we help set up scenario sets for trainees, working technicians and benchmark assessments. Results are scored, so you can track readiness across the crew. Request a Practical NDT demo for your Amarillo team. Pricing is quote on request, and the platform is affordable, accessible and fully customizable. If your crew needs formal Level I or Level II instruction as well, ask about Atlantis NDT training at the same time. You can also ask about scenario sets that combine aerospace and refinery work for mixed crews.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?
No. It is a practice and readiness tool. Certification under ASNT SNT-TC-1A is granted by your employer according to its written practice and requires a practical exam on real specimens with real equipment. Practical NDT helps you prepare for that exam and stay sharp afterwards. It does not replace the exam and does not issue any certification.
What experience level is it for?
Every level. Trainees use 33 guided lessons for fundamentals. Working technicians use the job library for refreshers and rare-defect practice between assignments. Level IIIs and team leads build and assign scenario sets and benchmark crews objectively.
Is there eddy current practice relevant to aerospace work in Amarillo?
Yes. The Aircraft Hangar environment has 54 jobs on airframe and component inspection, and ET is one of the twelve methods. You can practise probe handling, impedance-plane interpretation and scanning around fastener holes and edges. Your employer’s procedures and any customer-specific aerospace requirements still govern the real work.
Which methods matter most for Panhandle refinery and gas plant work?
Contact UT and PAUT for welds and thickness, TOFD for through-wall sizing, IRIS for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI for alloy verification during turnarounds, LRUT for screening long pipe runs, and MFL with UT in the Storage Tank environment for tank floors and shells.
How do we get started?
Request a demo. We will show the environments and methods that fit your contracts and help your supervisor set up scenario sets. Everything runs in a browser or app, so technicians can practise at home, in the shop or on the road across the Panhandle.
