NDT Simulator and Hands-On Weld Inspection Practice in Longview, East Texas

Longview is a welding town in a way few American cities are. It is home to LeTourneau University, one of only a handful of universities in the country with an ABET-accredited welding engineering programme and the only one to offer both welding engineering and welding technology degrees under one roof. It grew up next to the East Texas Oil Field, discovered in 1930 near Kilgore, which was once the largest oil field in the lower forty-eight states. And on the edge of the city is one of the largest chemical complexes in Texas, a site of about 6,000 acres that turns pipeline ethane and propane into dozens of chemical products. Welds, pressure equipment, piping and heavy fabrication sit at the centre of the local economy, and every one of those welds needs someone qualified to inspect it. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and we call it Practical NDT. It is an immersive, game-like 3D platform that runs in a browser or app. Technicians handle virtual UT and phased array probes, yokes, penetrant, eddy current coils and more, inspect realistic welds, tubes, tanks and components, and get a score with feedback on every job. It works for every skill level, from a welding student in Longview learning what an inspector looks for to a Level III who needs to benchmark a chemical plant inspection crew.

Why Hands-On Weld Inspection Practice Matters in Longview

In East Texas, a lot of NDT work starts and ends with welds. There are fabrication welds on pressure vessels and structural members in local shops, piping welds during chemical plant turnarounds and expansions, pipeline girth welds on gas gathering and transmission lines, and repair welds on oilfield equipment that has been in service for decades. Weld inspection is where technique matters most. With UT you must choose the right angle, cover the full weld volume and heat-affected zone, tell a root or crown geometry echo from a real crack or lack of fusion, and size what you find. With PAUT you need a focal law and scan plan that give complete coverage. With RT you have to read the difference between porosity, slag, incomplete penetration and cracking on film or a digital image. These skills come from repetition, and repetition on real flawed welds is hard to get. Flawed weld specimens with known, documented defects cost a lot to make, and there are never enough of them. Shops do not want production welds tied up for training, and a chemical plant cannot open a live line so a trainee can practise. Practical NDT fills that gap. A Longview technician can scan dozens of virtual welds with different defects in an evening, compare their calls with the known answer, and learn from each miss, without using a real specimen or booking bench time.

The chemical side adds another layer. Plants making products from ethane and propane run hot, pressurised and sometimes corrosive processes. Inspection there includes heat-exchanger tube integrity, corrosion under insulation, thickness monitoring on piping circuits and vessels, and checks that alloy components are the right material. Much of that work peaks during planned turnarounds, when many technicians are needed at once and many of them have not done a particular technique since the last outage. Practising before the turnaround means crews start producing reliable data sooner.

Matching Practical NDT Environments to Longview Work

Practical NDT has five workplace environments, and Longview’s mix of fabrication, chemical processing and oilfield work puts two of them in front. The Welding Workshop has 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints. It is the natural training ground for anyone inspecting shop fabrication, structural steel, pressure vessel seams or pipe welds, and it lines up closely with the welding programmes that are part of Longview’s identity. The Oil & Gas Site has 73 jobs in a process plant setting, covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice. It maps to chemical plant piping, heat exchangers, gas plants and oilfield facilities. The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, which fits tank farms at plants and oilfield terminals. The NDT Lab has 52 bench jobs with specimens and reference blocks, where calibration and basic technique should be learned first. The Aircraft Hangar, with 54 jobs, is less central to Longview’s economy but is useful for technicians adding eddy current and precision surface inspection to their skills, or who work with the regional airport and aviation programmes. Most Longview crews will use the Welding Workshop and Oil & Gas Site most of the time, with the Lab for new hires and the Storage Tank for tank work.

Methods You Can Practice: Ultrasonic Testing Simulator, PAUT, TOFD and More

Practical NDT covers twelve methods. For weld-heavy work, the volumetric methods are central. Contact ultrasonic testing (UT) works as an ultrasonic testing simulator. You calibrate on reference blocks, build distance-amplitude curves, choose angles, scan welds in a proper raster pattern, and locate and size indications. Phased array UT (PAUT) is a phased array simulator for scan plans, sectorial and linear scans, and encoded weld inspection, which is now standard on many piping and vessel welds. Time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) trains you to read lateral waves, back-wall signals and tip-diffracted echoes for accurate through-wall sizing. Radiography (RT) builds interpretation skill on weld images with porosity, slag inclusions, lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, burn-through and cracks. The surface methods are just as important in fabrication shops. Magnetic particle testing (MT) finds surface and near-surface cracks on ferromagnetic welds, penetrant testing (PT) finds surface-breaking flaws on stainless and non-ferrous material, and visual testing (VT) covers weld profile, undercut, overlap and surface porosity. The electromagnetic group includes eddy current (ET) and magnetic flux leakage (MFL) for tank floor screening. For chemical plant work, the three specialist techniques are especially useful. IRIS inspects heat-exchanger tubes from the inside for wall loss and pitting. PMI confirms that alloy piping, fittings and weld metal are the specified material. LRUT guided wave screens long pipe runs, including runs on racks and at road crossings, for corrosion from a single probe position.

Built for Every Skill Level

The same platform serves very different users. New trainees, including welding students who want to understand inspection or career-changers entering NDT, start with 33 guided lessons. The lessons cover the basics one step at a time: how the instrument works, how to calibrate, how to scan, and how to decide whether an indication is relevant. Each step gives feedback, so bad habits are corrected before they set. Working technicians use the job library for refreshers. That is especially helpful for defects they rarely see in real work, such as a toe crack on a fillet weld, lack of sidewall fusion in a thick section, or pitting deep inside an exchanger tube. The scoring shows exactly where they went wrong: missed coverage, poor sizing, or a wrong call. Level IIIs and team leads can build scenario sets, assign them to a crew, and compare results objectively. Before a chemical plant turnaround, a lead can check that every technician assigned to PAUT or IRIS can actually do the work, and give extra practice to anyone who needs it. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who leads Atlantis training, to reflect the geometries and defects inspectors meet in real plants and shops.

NDT Practical Exam Preparation: How It Complements Formal ASNT Training

Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool, and it is important to be clear about that. It is not a certification, it does not qualify anyone, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens required by ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer’s written practice. Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer certifies its personnel. The written practice defines the required training hours, experience and examinations, and the practical exam uses real equipment on real test pieces. The simulator helps people arrive at that exam ready. They have calibrated many times, scanned many welds, and learned from mistakes that cost nothing. For formal classroom and hands-on instruction, see Atlantis NDT training and certification. We run Level I and Level II programmes and help employers set up SNT-TC-1A written practices. In East Texas you may also meet employers or owners asking for other credentials, such as AWS Certified Welding Inspector for weld inspection roles or API inspector programmes for plant staff. Those are local market requirements to be aware of. Atlantis frames its training around SNT-TC-1A and does not train toward or administer those other schemes.

The Longview Industrial Picture: Chemicals, the East Texas Oil Field and Heavy Fabrication

Longview’s economy was built in layers. The first was oil. The discovery of the East Texas Oil Field in 1930 changed Gregg, Rusk, Smith and Upshur counties almost overnight. Kilgore’s downtown was once crowded with derricks, and the field has produced for nearly a century. Many of the wells, flowlines, tank batteries and gathering systems still in service need ongoing corrosion and integrity inspection. Natural gas from deeper East Texas formations, and the pipelines that carry it, added more inspection work. The second layer was chemicals. The large chemical complex on Longview’s southeast side has operated for more than seventy years. It receives ethane and propane by pipeline from the Gulf Coast and makes more than forty chemical products, and it has continued to invest in new units, including a molecular recycling facility. A site of that size needs a steady stream of vessel, piping, exchanger and tank inspection, with big peaks during turnarounds and construction. The third layer is manufacturing and fabrication. Longview has a long tradition of heavy equipment and steel fabrication that goes back to R. G. LeTourneau’s earth-moving machinery, and it still has plants building heavy equipment and fabricated components. LeTourneau University and nearby Kilgore College supply engineers, welders and technicians to these employers. For NDT companies, that means a steady supply of people who understand welding but may be new to inspection, and a market where clients expect inspectors to understand weld metallurgy. A simulator that lets those people practise weld inspection repeatedly is a good fit for this workforce.

Industrial radiography in Texas is regulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services radiation control programme, which licenses radiography operations and certifies industrial radiographers. Practical NDT’s RT scenarios build image interpretation skill with no source and no exposure. They are not a substitute for radiation safety training or state certification.

NDT Training Online in Texas: Bringing Practical NDT to Your Longview Team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and East Texas crews can start using it without building a lab or buying specimens. Technicians log in from a browser or app at the shop, at home, or in a trailer at the plant gate. A typical Longview rollout starts with a demo. We show your supervisor or Level III the Welding Workshop, Oil & Gas Site and other environments that fit your work, and walk through the methods your contracts need, such as UT, PAUT and TOFD for welds, IRIS and PMI for chemical plant turnarounds, and MFL and UT for tanks. Then we help set up scenario sets: guided lessons for new hires, refreshers for experienced technicians, and benchmark jobs before a turnaround or new contract. Scored results show readiness clearly. Request a Practical NDT demo for your Longview team. Pricing is quote on request, and the platform is affordable, accessible and fully customizable. If you also need formal Level I or Level II classes, ask about Atlantis NDT training in the same conversation, or ask about turnaround readiness scenario sets for a plant crew.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?

No. Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. Certification under ASNT SNT-TC-1A is granted by your employer under its written practice and includes a practical exam on real specimens with real equipment. The simulator helps you prepare for that exam and keep skills current. It does not replace it and does not issue any certification.

What experience level is it for?

All levels. Trainees start with 33 guided lessons. Working technicians use the job library to refresh techniques and practise rare defects between assignments. Level IIIs and team leads build scenario sets, assign them to crews and benchmark results objectively.

Is it useful for welding students and welders moving into inspection?

Yes. Many people in Longview already know welding well. The Welding Workshop environment, with 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints, shows them how those welds look to an inspector using UT, PAUT, RT, MT, PT and VT. It is a practical bridge into formal NDT training, not a replacement for it.

Which methods help most for chemical plant turnarounds?

Contact UT and PAUT for piping and vessel welds, TOFD for sizing, IRIS for heat-exchanger tubes, PMI for alloy verification, LRUT for screening pipe runs, and UT and MFL in the Storage Tank environment. A Level III can build a turnaround readiness set that combines these.

How do we get started?

Request a demo. We will show the environments and methods that fit your work and help your team lead set up scenario sets. It runs in a browser or app, so crews across Gregg, Harrison and neighbouring counties can use it wherever they are.
