UT content. Wave physics, transducers and wedges, calibration and reference standards, thickness gauging, angle-beam weld inspection, DAC and TCG, flaw sizing and reporting. We emphasise structural weld inspection and the AWS D1.1 approach to UT because it is so common on Central Texas construction projects.
PAUT and TOFD content. Focal laws, sectorial and linear scans, encoded scanning, scan plans and coverage, TOFD set-up and interpretation, and data review. On crowded construction sites, owners often prefer ultrasonic methods to radiography because they avoid shutting down areas for radiation safety.
RT content. Sources, exposure geometry, film and digital imaging, IQIs and interpretation. The method course does not replace the Texas radiographer certification described below.
MT, PT, VT and ET content. Method physics, equipment, technique selection, code acceptance criteria and documentation. Level III candidates get structured preparation for the Basic, Method and Specific exams; see ASNT Level III training.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in Austin, step by step
Texas does not license NDT technicians as such, except for radiography, which has its own state certification. For every method, SNT-TC-1A certification is issued by your employer:
- Employer written practice sets training, experience, exams and pass marks per method and level.
- Classroom training in the method, delivered by Atlantis NDT self-paced online or onsite. For recommended minimums, see our training-requirements matrix.
- On-the-job experience, documented and supervised. On construction projects, log the project and code for each entry.
- General examination on method theory.
- Specific examination on your employer's equipment, procedures and acceptance criteria.
- Practical examination on real specimens, administered under a Level III.
- Vision examination, near-vision and colour contrast, typically annual.
- Employer certification, approved by the responsible Level III.
- Recertification at the interval in the written practice. For RT, keep your Texas radiographer certification current as well.

- Semiconductor fabs. Samsung has long operated a fab in Austin and has built a major new fab in Taylor, and other chipmakers and equipment suppliers operate in the region. Fab construction involves large volumes of structural steel, process and utility piping, and high-purity systems where VT, PT and weld inspection are routine.
- EV and advanced manufacturing. Tesla's Gigafactory Texas east of Austin and its supplier base, plus a growing number of battery, equipment and industrial manufacturers, need structural, piping and equipment inspection during construction and maintenance.
- Data centres. Central Texas has become an active data-centre market, with steel-framed buildings, generator plants and cooling systems that call for structural weld inspection under AWS D1.1 and piping inspection.
- Power generation. The LCRA Fayette Power Project near La Grange and Austin Energy's gas-fired plants are among the regional generators, and the ERCOT grid has seen new gas, battery and renewable construction across Central Texas. Plants need UT, ET on condenser and heat-exchanger tubing, MT and PT during outages.
- Pipelines. Major crude, natural-gas and NGL pipelines carrying Permian production toward the Gulf Coast cross Central Texas. Construction and repair welding is typically inspected to API 1104, and integrity programmes follow federal PHMSA rules and Texas Railroad Commission oversight of intrastate lines.
- Transport infrastructure. TxDOT is headquartered in Austin, and projects such as the I-35 reconstruction through the city involve steel bridge and structural work that references AWS D1.5 for bridge welding.
- Aviation and defence. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and the Army aviation presence at Fort Cavazos, north of the metro, support aviation maintenance where ET, UT and PT are the core methods.
- Fabrication shops. Central Texas shops fabricate skids, tanks, vessels, structural steel and piping spools for the projects above, working to ASME Section VIII, B31.3 and Section V.
Radiography licensing in Texas. Texas is an NRC Agreement State, and industrial radiography is regulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Radiation Control programme, which is based in Austin. Companies performing radiography need a Texas licence or registration, and individuals must hold Texas industrial radiographer certification. Texas recognises three levels: radiographer trainee, radiographer and radiographer trainer, with trainees working under the personal supervision of a radiographer trainer. The rules are in 25 TAC §289.255. This state certification is separate from, and additional to, your SNT-TC-1A RT certification. Our RT course teaches technique and interpretation; it does not issue Texas radiographer certification. Check current requirements with DSHS and your radiation safety officer.
What Austin employers typically ask for. Construction inspection firms ask for SNT-TC-1A Level II in UT, MT and VT, often alongside AWS CWI. Practise before the practical exam
The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees practise 12 method families in 12 workplaces, including NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site and storage tank. Structural and fabrication inspectors will get most from the welding workshop; pipeline and plant crews from the oil and gas and tank scenes.
It is practice only. It does not replace hands-on training with real equipment, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens under a Level III.
