Curriculum Coverage

The New York offer is ASNT NDT Level III exam preparation for the Basic and Method examinations, plus SNT-TC-1A Level III services for employers: Written Practice authoring and review, procedure approval, and Level I and II examination and certification under the employer's own written practice. Aerospace employers working to NAS 410 or EN 4179 certify their personnel themselves, under their written practice and a Responsible Level 3; Atlantis does not deliver or examine NAS 410, EN 4179 or ISO 9712 qualification. ASNT publishes the current exam format, question counts and testing-centre arrangements; check asnt.org. Codes such as ASME B&PV Section V and the ASME B31 piping series appear as context for procedure writing, not as separate certifications.

ASNT Level III exam preparation for New York candidates and employers

Short answer: If you work in New York and want the ASNT NDT Level III, you prepare for ASNT's Basic exam and one or more method exams, apply to ASNT under one of its education-and-experience routes, and sit the exams through ASNT. Atlantis NDT runs the preparation self-paced online for individuals across the five boroughs, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey, or onsite at an employer's facility for a group. ASNT administers the programme and issues the certificate; Atlantis does not.

New York's Level III market is shaped by infrastructure more than by process plants. Bridges, tunnels, transit, high-rise steel, utility steam and gas networks, and the special-inspection regime of the New York City Building Code generate a steady need for people who can write and defend NDT procedures in front of demanding owners. Add the upstate nuclear fleet, aerospace and defence suppliers, and the refineries and tank terminals just across the harbour in New Jersey, and you get a Level III population that is unusually code-heavy and unusually exposed to third-party review.

This page explains how to prepare in that context: the role, the eligibility routes, the exam structure, a study approach suited to New York working hours, and what employers do when they need Level III cover before a candidate is ready. To get started, request a New York Level III prep quote; we reply within one business day.

The Level III role on New York projects

Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A and ANSI/ASNT CP-189, the Level III is responsible for the NDT programme's technical content: establishing techniques, writing and approving procedures, interpreting codes and specifications, choosing the method and technique for each application, and training and examining Level I and II personnel under the employer's written practice. A Level II applies a procedure. A Level III is accountable for whether the procedure is right.

On New York work, that accountability is tested more often than in most markets. A few typical situations:

  • A testing agency performing ultrasonic examination of complete-joint-penetration welds on a high-rise steel frame needs procedures that satisfy AWS D1.1 and the project's special-inspection requirements, and a Level III who can answer the engineer of record when a rejection is challenged.
  • A bridge rehabilitation contractor working to AWS D1.5 must show that its UT and MT technicians are qualified and certified under a written practice an owner's QA team will audit.
  • A utility contractor working on steam or gas piping needs radiography and ultrasonic procedures aligned with ASME B31.1, B31.3 or B31.8 and the operator's own specifications.
  • A supplier to the nuclear or defence sector must run a programme under CP-189 or a customer-mandated scheme, with examination records that survive a formal audit.

Passing the exams gives you the knowledge credential. The experience behind it, and the ability to stand up in a meeting and explain a procedure, is what makes you a working Level III.

Eligibility: how ASNT's three routes apply to New York candidates

ASNT sets the eligibility rules for its NDT Level III examinations, and they combine education with experience in an assignment comparable to a Level II in the relevant method. There are three routes: a four-year degree in engineering or a physical science with the shortest experience requirement; at least two academic years of engineering or physical-science study with a longer one; and a route with no college requirement that asks for the longest Level II-comparable experience. ASNT publishes the exact requirements; read them on ASNT's site and in our Level III certification requirements guide before you apply.

New York candidate profileRoute that usually appliesWhat to sort out before applying
Civil or structural engineer at a testing or special-inspection agencyDegree routeEvidence that the experience was NDT work comparable to Level II in the method, not general inspection or design review
Engineering-technology graduate working as a UT or RT Level II for a contractorPartial-degree routeTranscripts showing qualifying engineering or science study, plus method-specific experience records
Senior field technician with long Level II serviceExperience routeLetters or records from previous employers, especially where work moved between agencies and projects
Quality engineer at an aerospace or defence supplierDegree or partial-degree routeWhether hands-on method experience meets ASNT's "comparable to Level II" test, not only oversight of NDT

The weak point in New York applications is rarely the education. It is experience documentation after years of project-based work across several agencies and contractors. Start gathering records early. Our Level II to Level III pathway guide covers how candidates usually present it, and we will review your history before you apply if you send it to us.

How the ASNT Level III examinations are structured

First-time candidates must pass the Basic examination and at least one method examination. The Basic is a one-time exam; once passed, each further method needs only its method exam. ASNT publishes and periodically revises the number of questions, time allowed, passing criteria and testing arrangements, so check ASNT's current figures when you book. We do not quote them here.

The Basic exam

The Basic covers personnel certification (SNT-TC-1A, CP-189 and the CP-105 topical outlines), materials and process technology, codes, standards and procedures, NDT training, and Level II-depth familiarity with the common methods. New York candidates from engineering backgrounds often find the materials section comfortable and the method-familiarity questions harder; field technicians usually find the reverse. See Level III Basic exam prep.

ASNT runs the exam; your employer appoints you; Atlantis prepares you

Three separate parties are involved, and New York candidates who mix them up can lose months.

  1. ASNT administers the NDT Level III programme. It reviews your application against its eligibility routes, arranges the proctored examinations and issues the ASNT NDT Level III certificate. ASNT's central certification programmes for other levels, formerly known under the ACCP name, are also ASNT's own.
  2. Your employer certifies you as its Level III under its written practice. Under SNT-TC-1A the employer's document governs, and it may require a specific examination on the company's own codes, procedures and products in addition to the ASNT certificate. CP-189 programmes tie the employer's Level III more directly to the ASNT certificate.
  3. Atlantis NDT prepares you: diagnostic testing, instruction, worked problems, timed practice and a study plan, plus help for your employer with the written practice if it needs updating. We do not issue ASNT certificates or run ASNT examinations.

If your employer's written practice needs to be brought up to date before you are appointed, see written practice development and SNT-TC-1A training and certification. ASNT NDT Level III certificates are renewed on a five-year cycle by renewal points or by retaking the method exam; see how Level III recertification points work.

Studying for the Level III around a New York schedule

New York candidates tend to have long days, long commutes and project work that spikes without warning. The preparation is built for that. All theory sessions run self-paced online, so you can study from an office in Midtown, a site trailer in Queens or home in Westchester, Long Island or New Jersey. Recordings and assigned problem sets cover the sessions you miss when a pour or an inspection runs late. There is no Atlantis classroom in New York; for groups, we deliver at the employer's facility.

The study approach adapts to the profile of the candidate rather than one fixed timetable:

  • For the field technician: start with SNT-TC-1A, CP-189 and CP-105 read end to end, then spend the most time on materials and processes and on the methods you rarely use. Timed practice starts early because field technicians are often slower on long written questions.
  • For the engineer: compress the materials work and invest in method principles, technique selection and calculations, where the gap usually lies. Spend real time on the certification documents; engineers tend to skim them and lose easy marks.
  • For the multi-method candidate: sequence the method exams so that the first is the method with the strongest documented experience, and reuse the Basic preparation across the later methods.

Every plan includes a diagnostic at the start, full timed mock examinations near the end, an error log that drives the final review, and an honest go / no-go call. If the mocks say you are not ready, we tell you to move the exam date. The length of the plan depends on your diagnostic results and the number of methods, so we agree it with you instead of promising a fixed number of weeks.

Who employs Level IIIs in and around New York (context)

These sectors describe where Level III authority is typically required in the region. They are context, not a client list.

  • Bridges, tunnels and transit. Owners such as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the New York State Department of Transportation maintain and rebuild large inventories of steel structures. Fabrication and rehabilitation of bridge steel is usually governed by AWS D1.5, with UT and MT the core methods.
  • Building construction and special inspection. The New York City Building Code requires special inspections on structural steel and other work, and the testing and inspection agencies that perform them employ UT, MT and VT technicians who need a Level III behind their procedures and certifications. Structural steel welding is typically to AWS D1.1.
  • Utilities. Steam, gas and electric utilities in the region, including Con Edison's steam network in Manhattan, generate piping work under ASME B31 codes and operator specifications, with pipeline safety oversight from PHMSA and the state.
  • Nuclear power. Upstate New York hosts operating nuclear plants near Oswego and Rochester, and Indian Point on the Hudson is being decommissioned. Nuclear in-service inspection references ASME Section XI, and many nuclear programmes are run under CP-189.
  • Aerospace and defence manufacturing. Long Island, the Hudson Valley and upstate New York have aerospace and defence suppliers whose customers often require NAS 410. Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A-based; NAS 410 is mentioned here only as context for what some employers also ask for.
  • New Jersey refining, terminals and ports. Across the harbour, the refinery and tank terminals around Linden, Bayonne and the Port of New York and New Jersey create pressure-vessel, piping and storage-tank work, where API inspection codes are the owner's context and ASME Section V governs NDT technique.

This mix pushes New York Level IIIs toward code fluency across several documents at once: AWS D1.1 and D1.5 for structures, ASME B31 and Section V for piping, Section XI for nuclear, and customer specifications for aerospace. That is exactly where the Basic exam's codes-and-procedures questions and the method exams' procedure content earn their marks. Radiography rules in New York City, New York State and New Jersey

New York is an NRC Agreement State, and radioactive-materials licensing is split by geography. Inside the five boroughs, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Office of Radiological Health regulates radiological matters. Elsewhere in the state, the New York State Department of Health licenses industrial use of radioactive materials, and industrial radiography is authorised on its own licence. New Jersey is also an Agreement State with its own state programme. A Level III writing radiography procedures for crews that move between Manhattan, upstate sites and New Jersey has to reflect each regulator's requirements and the employer's licence conditions. The RT method exam tests radiation-safety principles; site rules come from the licence and the regulator, so confirm them before any crew mobilises.

For New York employers: Level III cover while your candidate prepares

Testing agencies, contractors and manufacturers in New York often face the same problem: an audit, a new contract or a departing Level III means they need Level III authority immediately, while the internal candidate is still building eligible experience or preparing for the exams. The usual answer combines three things:

Rehearse techniques with the Practical NDT simulator

Level III exams are written, but writing a procedure for a weld you have never scanned is harder than it sounds. The Practical NDT simulator lets candidates rehearse 12 method families in twelve workplaces, including an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It is useful for refreshing methods you rarely use before the Basic exam. It is a practice tool only and does not replace practical examinations on real specimens under a written practice.

Your instructor

Preparation is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. The focus is on the judgement the exams and the job test: method and technique selection, procedure content, and reading codes the way an auditor will.
