7. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast, repeated annually.
8. Certification by your employer. The certifying Level III and the employer sign the certification record.
9. Recertification. At the interval in your written practice, by examination or by evidence of continued satisfactory work, as the document allows.

Online, live-virtual or onsite NDT training for Honolulu crews

There are three ways to run a programme for a Honolulu team, and the right one depends on crew size and your outage calendar.

Navy ship repair and the waterfront

Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is the dominant industrial employer. Navy nuclear and surface-ship work is inspected to NAVSEA requirements such as Technical Publication 271 and MIL-STD-2035, and the shipyard qualifies its own NDT personnel to those Navy programmes. Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A-based, so it does not replace shipyard qualification. It does give contractors and subcontractors working on the waterfront a documented ASNT foundation, and many Navy contracts ask subcontractors for ASNT-qualified personnel alongside the Navy-specific requirements.

Refining, fuels and terminals

Par Hawaii's Kapolei refinery and the fuel terminals around Barbers Point and Honolulu Harbor need corrosion surveys, weld inspection on piping repairs, and tank inspection. Owners typically work to ASME Section V for NDT methods, ASME B31.3 for process piping, and API inspection codes for piping, vessels and tanks. Some employers also ask for API 510, 570 or 653 inspector credentials for their own inspectors; Atlantis does not train for those, but ASNT Level II technicians support every inspection those inspectors sign off.

Power, utilities and infrastructure

Aviation

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam support airline line maintenance and military aircraft work. Aerospace NDT often runs under NAS 410 or the operator's own programme; we mention it only as context because Atlantis trains to SNT-TC-1A, not NAS 410.

Construction and fabrication

High-rise construction in Kakaako and downtown, rail and transit structures, and local fabrication shops need structural-steel weld inspection, usually to AWS D1.1, with VT, MT and UT as the core methods.

Radiography licensing in Hawaii

Hawaii is not an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography with radioactive sources (for example Ir-192) in Hawaii falls under the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, administered from NRC Region IV in Arlington, Texas. A company licensed by an Agreement State on the mainland can work in Hawaii under the NRC's reciprocity rule by filing NRC Form 241 first. Under 10 CFR Part 34, each radiographer must hold radiographer certification from an NRC-recognised certifying entity and complete the licensee's radiation safety training before working as a radiographer. X-ray machines are a separate matter regulated by the Hawaii Department of Health's Indoor and Radiological Health Branch. TWIC and base access

Unescorted access to secure areas of MTSA-regulated port facilities such as Honolulu Harbor and Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor requires a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued by the TSA. Work inside Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam needs installation access through your contract sponsor. Method spotlight: UT thickness and corrosion mapping in a salt-air environment

If one method earns its keep on Oahu it is ultrasonic thickness testing. Everything near the water corrodes: tank floors and shells, pipe racks, piling, fuel lines and pier structures. A competent UT Level II in Honolulu needs to do more than read a number off a gauge. They need to select the right transducer for pitted surfaces, handle coatings with echo-to-echo techniques, set up a grid that an engineer can trend from one survey to the next, and recognise when spot readings should be replaced by a scanned corrosion map with PAUT. • Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Apprentice Program. A four-year paid apprenticeship run with the US Department of Labor and Honolulu Community College, leading to an Associate degree in Applied Trades. It is the main home-grown route into shipyard trades, including inspection-related work, and hiring is through USAJOBS. It is an excellent route if you want a shipyard career; it is not open enrolment.
• Honolulu Community College. Runs the academic side of the shipyard apprenticeship and offers trades programmes. It does not, as far as we could confirm, run a stand-alone ASNT NDT certificate.
• ASNT Hawaii Section. ASNT lists a Hawaii section in its Region 15. Section meetings are a good way to meet local Level IIIs and hear about openings; check the ASNT section directory for current meeting details.
• Mainland schoolhouses. Several established NDT schools on the West Coast and in Texas run open-enrolment courses. They work well for one technician at a time but add travel and lodging for every trainee.
