SNT-TC-1A certification path in Las Vegas, step by step
Under SNT-TC-1A, a training course does not certify you. Your employer does. The path looks like this:
- Written practice. Your employer's document sets the training, experience, exam and vision requirements. No written practice, no valid certification; a Level III can write one for you.
- Classroom training in the method and level, live online or onsite in Las Vegas.
- On-the-job experience under supervision, logged and signed.
- General exam on method principles.
- Specific exam on your employer's procedures, equipment and the codes you inspect to, such as AWS D1.1.
- Practical exam on real flawed specimens, administered under an ASNT Level III.
- Vision test, near-vision acuity and colour contrast, renewed every year.
- Employer certification, signed by the responsible Level III and the employer.
- Recertification at the interval and by the method your written practice specifies.

Online, live-virtual or onsite NDT training for Las Vegas crews
- Live online theory plus onsite practical. Classroom sessions run live in Pacific time. The practical then happens at your shop, yard or plant in Clark County using your equipment and specimens, or specimens we provide.
- Fully onsite cohort. For crews of several technicians, the Level III runs theory and practical at your facility. This also works for sites outside the valley, including Henderson, North Las Vegas, Pahrump, Mesquite and the solar fields along US-95.
- Individual online enrolment. A single technician takes theory through NDT training online, then completes the practical and exams with their employer's Level III.
Las Vegas scheduling is driven by project phases rather than refinery turnarounds. Where NDT technicians work in Las Vegas
Structural steel and special inspection
The resort corridor, arenas, stadiums, hospitals, warehouses and the valley's growing data-centre campuses all use structural steel that needs weld inspection. The governing code is usually AWS D1.1, and building-code special inspection in Clark County and the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas requires inspectors approved under the local special-inspection programme. Those approvals often call for AWS CWI or ICC credentials as well as ASNT Level II for UT and MT. Power generation and renewables
Gas-fired generating stations in the valley, Hoover Dam's hydropower plant, utility-scale solar and battery storage, and high-voltage transmission lines all need maintenance inspection. Typical work includes UT thickness and weld inspection on piping to ASME B31.1, ET on condenser and heat-exchanger tubes, and MT and VT on structural supports.
Pipelines and gas distribution
Natural gas transmission and distribution lines serving Southern Nevada, and fuel pipelines feeding the airport and terminals, use welding and NDT to API 1104 and federal pipeline rules. RT and, increasingly, automated UT are the standard methods.
Federal, defense and aviation
Nellis Air Force Base, Creech Air Force Base and the Nevada National Security Site bring defense work with security and base-access requirements on top of technical qualification. Harry Reid International Airport and general-aviation maintenance shops need PT, ET and UT on aircraft components; aerospace work often follows NAS 410, which we note as context only.
Mining and heavy equipment
Nevada's mining industry, mostly in the north of the state, relies on MT and UT for crack detection on haul trucks, shovels and crusher components. Las Vegas-based technicians sometimes rotate to those sites.
Radiography licensing in Nevada
Nevada is an NRC Agreement State. Radioactive materials licences, including industrial radiography with Ir-192 sources, are issued and inspected by the Radiation Control Program in the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, which also registers X-ray machines. Out-of-state radiography firms must obtain reciprocity before working in Nevada. Under the Agreement State equivalent of 10 CFR Part 34, each radiographer needs radiographer certification from a recognised certifying entity plus the licensee's radiation safety training. Our RT courses teach the NDT method; they are not a radiation licence, and the Radiation Safety Officer remains responsible for compliance.
TWIC and site access
Las Vegas has no seaport, so TWIC rarely applies locally. It becomes relevant if you travel to work on port or marine terminal projects in California. Federal sites such as Nellis and the Nevada National Security Site require their own access processing, sometimes including a security clearance.
Method spotlight: UT of structural groove welds to AWS D1.1
The most valuable single skill for a Las Vegas technician is ultrasonic inspection of complete-joint-penetration groove welds in structural steel. AWS D1.1 sets a specific ultrasonic procedure: calibrated shear-wave angle beams, defined scanning patterns, decibel-based flaw rating, and acceptance tables that differ for statically and cyclically loaded connections. A technician who understands how the code calculates an indication rating, how to handle backing bars and weld access holes, and how to report so the engineer of record can act, is in demand on every large project in the valley. Our UT Level II course works through these D1.1 scenarios in detail, and teams that already hold UT Level II can move on to PAUT for structural welds, which some engineers now accept as an alternative where the project specification allows.
Local options compared: NDT training in and around Las Vegas
- College of Southern Nevada (CSN). Runs a welding technology programme with entry-level and advanced certificates and an associate degree, including SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW and blueprint reading. It is a strong route into welding and a good foundation for later inspection work. It is not an ASNT NDT certification course.
- Local inspection firms and special-inspection agencies. Several Las Vegas companies train their own staff in-house under their own written practices. If you are hired by one of them, their programme is your certification route.
- ASNT local section. We could not confirm an ASNT section based in Las Vegas; use the ASNT section directory to find the nearest one. ASNT's annual conference has been held in Las Vegas, which is a useful networking opportunity when it returns.
- Out-of-state schoolhouses. Open-enrolment NDT schools in California, Arizona and Texas run scheduled courses. Good for one person at a time; travel and lodging add up for a crew.

What a Las Vegas employer receives at the end of a cohort
Training only helps you in an audit if the paperwork matches your written practice. At the end of an Atlantis cohort the employer receives an attendance and classroom-hours record for each trainee, the graded general, specific and practical examination records, vision test documentation where we administered it, and a certification packet laid out to match the employer's own written practice so the Level III of record and the employer can sign. Where the employer's written practice is out of date, for example still referencing an older SNT-TC-1A edition or missing a method the crew now performs, we flag it before the cohort starts rather than after. For special-inspection agencies, that packet is usually what a building official, general contractor or engineer of record asks to see when they question a technician's qualification on a structural project.
Individual technician or company team?
If you are an individual in Las Vegas looking to break into NDT, the quickest path is usually to get hired as a trainee by an inspection firm or fabricator and let the employer sponsor your training and certification, because certification under SNT-TC-1A always runs through an employer. If you are a company, a single cohort for your whole crew keeps everybody on one written practice and one set of records, which is easier to defend in an audit than a mix of certificates from different schools.
