NDT Training and Certification in Kentucky

Short answer: Kentucky technicians and employers get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III training from Atlantis NDT in three ways: live online classes, live-virtual cohorts, or onsite sessions at your own plant, mill, refinery or job site. An ASNT NDT Level III leads and oversees the training. Certification is employer-based. Your company's written practice defines training, experience and exams, and a Level III administers them. Atlantis has no Kentucky training centre. We teach online or come to your facility.

Kentucky's NDT market is built on heavy manufacturing and metals, not on the coast or the oilfield. The state builds more vehicles per person than almost anywhere in the country, including Toyota's largest plant, two Ford plants in Louisville, the Corvette plant in Bowling Green and a large battery-plant project in Hardin County. Along the Ohio River it melts and rolls stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminium. It runs a large refinery in the northeast, chemical complexes at Calvert City and Louisville, coal and gas power stations, gas transmission pipelines that cross the state, two big Army posts and some of the busiest air-cargo hubs in the world. This page explains where Kentucky NDT work is, what each sector expects, which state agencies regulate radiography, boilers and pipelines, and how to request a Kentucky NDT training quote for your crew.

Where NDT technicians work in Kentucky

Direct answer: Kentucky NDT work clusters in Louisville (automotive, appliances, chemicals, air cargo), the Bluegrass around Lexington and Georgetown (automotive), Northern Kentucky (air cargo, steel, bridges), the Ohio River corridor from Ghent to Owensboro and Paducah (steel, aluminium, power, chemicals), Northeast Kentucky around Ashland (refining), South Central Kentucky (automotive and batteries) and Eastern Kentucky (coal, gas, pipelines).

Louisville and Jefferson County

Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant and Kentucky Truck Plant, GE Appliances' Appliance Park and a large supplier base need production inspection: weld checks on bodies and frames, eddy current sorting and crack detection, and magnetic particle and penetrant inspection of forged and cast parts. The chemical plants in the Rubbertown area along the Ohio River bring process-piping, pressure-vessel and tank inspection during turnarounds. UPS's Worldport hub at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport makes Louisville an aircraft-maintenance city, with the eddy current, ultrasonic and penetrant work that goes with it. Louisville Gas and Electric's generating stations add boiler and piping outage work.

The Bluegrass: Lexington, Georgetown, Frankfort and Richmond

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown is Toyota's largest plant in the world, and its suppliers spread across the Bluegrass. Production NDT, especially UT of spot welds and joints, ET and MT on parts, and VT of welded assemblies, is the main work. Lexington also has aircraft-maintenance and manufacturing employers, and the Blue Grass Army Depot near Richmond has defence-related facilities.

Northern Kentucky and the Ohio River corridor east

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in Hebron hosts Amazon's air hub and DHL's Americas hub, which bring aircraft and ground-equipment maintenance. Upriver at Ghent, North American Stainless runs a large stainless steel mill and Nucor runs a steel mill nearby. Both need ultrasonic plate and weld inspection, MT, and inspection of cranes and rolling equipment. The Brent Spence Bridge corridor project between Covington and Cincinnati, and the state's many Ohio River bridges, need structural welding and bridge inspection.

Western Kentucky: Owensboro, Henderson, Paducah and Calvert City

Century Aluminum's smelters at Hawesville and Sebree, the chemical complex at Calvert City, and power stations along the river, including TVA's Shawnee Fossil Plant near Paducah, generate plant and outage inspection. Paducah also has the Department of Energy's former gaseous diffusion plant site, now in environmental clean-up. Owensboro is a gas-pipeline town: Texas Gas Transmission is headquartered there, and interstate gas transmission lines cross western Kentucky. That means API 1104 construction work and integrity work such as UT thickness, PAUT and radiography of welds.

Northeast Kentucky: Ashland and Catlettsburg

Marathon Petroleum's Catlettsburg refinery in Boyd County is Kentucky's refinery. It drives turnaround and in-service inspection work: corrosion mapping, thickness surveys on piping circuits, radiography and phased array of welds, and pressure-vessel and exchanger inspection. Barge, rail and fabrication shops along the Big Sandy and Ohio rivers add more weld inspection.

South Central and Eastern Kentucky

General Motors' Corvette plant in Bowling Green, the BlueOval SK battery project at Glendale in Hardin County, and suppliers along I-65 bring automotive and battery-manufacturing inspection. Fort Knox and Fort Campbell add vehicle, aviation and facility maintenance. In Eastern Kentucky, coal mining, gas production and gathering, and the transmission pipelines that run out of the Appalachian Basin need structural, equipment and pipeline weld inspection.

Wherever your company is, you can ask about onsite training for your Kentucky crew. We schedule around production, shutdowns and turnarounds.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Kentucky employers

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT teaches UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET at Level I and Level II, plus Level III exam preparation. Every course is structured on ASNT SNT-TC-1A and on your company's written practice. The table maps each method to Kentucky work.

Level III candidates in Kentucky usually prepare for the ASNT Basic examination plus a method examination in their company's main method. That is often UT or MT in manufacturing and steel, and UT or RT in refining, power and pipelines. See ASNT Level III training. UT Level II candidates can test themselves with the UT Level 2 practice questions.

NDT training by city in Kentucky

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT serves every Kentucky city online or onsite at the employer's facility. Lexington has a dedicated training page, and Lexington and Louisville have Practical NDT simulator pages. The table shows each city's main NDT sectors.

Lexington and Georgetown. Most demand comes from automotive production NDT inside plants and their suppliers. Those inspectors need deep skill in one or two methods on specific part families, and an exact grasp of the customer's acceptance criteria. Onsite training on the plant's own parts works especially well. See the Lexington training page.

Louisville. Louisville's NDT people split three ways: production inspectors in auto and appliance plants, field technicians in chemical plants and power stations, and aircraft-maintenance inspectors at the air cargo hub. Those are three different training profiles, and we build the course around the one your crew needs. See Practical NDT Louisville for simulator practice.

Northern Kentucky and Ghent. Mill inspectors need UT of plate and coils, MT of rolls, shafts and crane components, and VT of welded structures. Bridge and construction work leans on VT and UT to AWS D1.1 and D1.5.

Ashland. Refinery turnarounds bring large contract crews for UT thickness, PAUT, RT and VT. Contract technicians often train in the months before a turnaround, when online theory lets them study around other jobs.

Owensboro, Paducah and Bowling Green. Pipeline contractors need RT and PAUT to API 1104. Chemical and power plants need plant inspection. Auto and battery plants need production inspectors. All are served online and onsite.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Kentucky, step by step

Direct answer: Kentucky does not license NDT technicians in general. Under SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you based on its written practice. The practice sets training hours, experience, exams and vision tests, a Level III administers the exams, and the employer issues certification once you meet every requirement.

  1. Your employer adopts a written practice. It covers methods, levels, training and experience hours, exam content, passing grades, vision tests and recertification. If your company needs one, see written practice development.
  2. You complete formal training. Classroom hours per method and level come from the practice, using SNT-TC-1A recommendations. See the training requirements matrix for the guideline figures.
  3. You build documented experience. On-the-job hours in the method, under qualified supervision, on the work you will be certified for.
  4. You pass the general, specific and practical exams. The general exam covers theory, the specific exam covers your employer's procedures, codes and equipment, and the practical exam is done on real specimens. A Level III prepares and administers them.
  5. You pass the vision examination. Near-vision acuity is checked annually, and colour contrast as the practice requires.
  6. Your employer certifies you. Certification belongs to that employer. If you move from a Louisville plant to an Ashland contractor, the new employer decides how to recertify you.
  7. You recertify on schedule. The practice sets the interval and the evidence needed.

The ASNT NDT Level III certificate is different. ASNT issues it centrally by examination, and employers then certify their Level III under their own practice. See SNT-TC-1A training and certification.

Radiography licensing and other Kentucky requirements

Direct answer: Kentucky is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography with radioactive sources is licensed by the Radiation Health Branch of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (Department for Public Health) under 902 KAR Chapter 100. The Branch publishes a licensing guide specifically for industrial radiography.

For a Kentucky radiography company, the state licence sets radiation-safety training, radiographer and assistant qualification, personnel monitoring, survey instruments, source storage and transport, and field-crew rules, which follow the model of 10 CFR Part 34. The Radiation Health Branch also registers X-ray equipment. Radiation-safety training is separate from SNT-TC-1A RT method training, which teaches exposure technique, film and digital processing and interpretation. A field radiographer needs both. Work on federal sites, such as Department of Energy property or military installations, can fall under federal rules, so confirm the route before mobilising. Regulations are revised from time to time, so check current requirements with the Branch before a new crew starts work.

Boilers and pressure vessels. Kentucky's Boiler Inspection Section, part of the Division of Plumbing in the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (Public Protection Cabinet), inspects new installations of boilers, pressure vessels and pressure piping under KRS Chapter 236 and 815 KAR Chapter 15. Kentucky's regulations cover pressure piping as well as boilers and vessels, which matters for plant and fabrication work. ASME Section V NDT methods, with Section I, Section VIII and B31 acceptance criteria, are standard. Repair organisations work to National Board requirements.

Pipelines. The Kentucky Public Service Commission oversees intrastate gas pipeline safety, and PHMSA regulates interstate gas and hazardous-liquid lines. Pipeline welding and NDT generally follow API 1104, and operators run their own operator-qualification programmes on top of SNT-TC-1A certification.

Codes and specifications common in Kentucky. Automotive OEM and supplier quality standards in manufacturing. ASME Section V, VIII and B31.3 in refining and chemicals. ASME Section I and B31.1 in power stations. AWS D1.1 for structural steel and AASHTO/AWS D1.5 for bridges. API 1104 for pipelines. Aerospace customer specifications and NAS 410 for aircraft maintenance and aerospace suppliers, mentioned as context only, because Atlantis trains to SNT-TC-1A.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Kentucky

Direct answer: Kentucky crews can take theory online, join a live-virtual cohort with a Level III instructor, or bring the training onsite to their plant, mill or site. Practical exams always use real specimens under Level III oversight. Video and simulation never replace them.

Training works best when it follows Kentucky's work calendar. Auto plants have summer shutdown weeks and model changeovers, which suit production inspectors. Steel and aluminium mills schedule maintenance outages, when their own inspectors are busiest, so theory is better done before them. The Catlettsburg refinery and the chemical plants schedule turnarounds, and contract technicians are least available during them. Coal and gas power stations schedule outages in the spring and autumn shoulder seasons. Pipeline construction slows in winter, which suits training for pipeline crews. Technicians in Eastern and Western Kentucky benefit most from online theory, because a classroom week in Louisville or Lexington means long drives.

Onsite delivery means the instructor works at your Kentucky facility, with your equipment and procedures and, where possible, your own parts and welds as practice specimens. The specific exam can then reflect your real work. It suits companies with several technicians in a method, or companies that want training tied tightly to their written practice. Live online theory suits mixed groups and individuals. See online NDT training and corporate NDT training. When you're ready, request a cohort or onsite quote for Kentucky. Cohort and onsite quotes come back within one business day.

For Kentucky employers: written practice and Level III services

Direct answer: A Kentucky company that certifies its own NDT personnel needs a compliant written practice, a responsible Level III, and training and exam records that survive a customer audit. Atlantis NDT writes and reviews written practices, provides Level III services, and runs corporate training for Kentucky employers.

Kentucky's automotive and metals supply chain includes many companies with a few NDT inspectors inside a quality department and no in-house Level III. OEM audits and customer source inspections are where gaps show: missing training records, exams not administered by a qualified Level III, out-of-date vision tests, or a practice that doesn't cover the methods the shop now uses. We help close those gaps with:

If an audit is coming, book a Level III consultation. We start by reviewing your current documents.

Practise before your practical exam

Direct answer: The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets Kentucky trainees practise 12 NDT methods in 5 virtual environments before their hands-on exam. It builds familiarity with set-up and technique, but it is practice only. It does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.

The environments are an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. For Kentucky users, the welding workshop matches automotive, mill and fabrication weld inspection, the aircraft hangar matches cargo-hub maintenance in Louisville and Northern Kentucky, and the oil and gas site and storage tank match refinery, chemical and pipeline work. See Practical NDT, Practical NDT Louisville and Practical NDT Lexington.
