NDT Simulator and Hands-On Practical Training in Louisville, Kentucky
Louisville’s inspection work follows the Ohio River. In the southwest of the city, Rubbertown is a dense cluster of chemical plants threaded with pipelines, storage tanks, rail sidings and reactors, a legacy of wartime synthetic rubber production that grew into a modern chemical corridor. Further downriver, the Mill Creek Generating Station has been adding a new natural gas combined-cycle unit alongside its older coal units. Across town, two very large vehicle assembly plants run on welded frames, stamped bodies and heavy tooling, and UPS Worldport, the company’s largest package hub, launches hundreds of cargo flights a day. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Practical NDT gives Louisville technicians one place to rehearse the chemical-plant, power-plant, fabrication and aviation inspection jobs this mix of industry produces. It is immersive, 3D and game-like, runs in a browser or app, and works for anyone from a first-week trainee to a working Level III, with instant scored feedback on every job.
Why Hands-On NDT Practice Matters in Louisville’s Chemical and Power Sector
Chemical plant inspection is a discipline of patience and pattern recognition. Much of it is routine: thickness monitoring locations on piping circuits, visual inspection of supports and insulation, periodic inspection of pressure vessels and heat exchangers. But the consequences of the uncommon finding are serious. Localised corrosion hiding under insulation, pitting inside an exchanger tube bundle, a wrong alloy fitted during a hurried repair, or cracking at a weld in a process line can all turn into loss-of-containment events in a neighbourhood where plants sit close to homes. Power generation adds boiler tubes, headers, high-energy piping and the fabrication and commissioning inspections that come with a new combined-cycle unit.
The problem for technicians is that the difficult cases are rare. Someone who spends most months logging thickness readings may not have interpreted an IRIS wall-loss map or verified an alloy with PMI in a long time, and then a turnaround arrives with everything needed at once. Practice specimens with realistic tube damage or mixed-alloy components are hard to obtain, and nobody wants to practise on live equipment. Practical NDT lets Louisville technicians rehearse these jobs as often as they like, off the plant, without consuming specimens or requiring any radiation controls for RT interpretation practice.
Which Practical NDT Environments Fit Louisville
Practical NDT has five environments: an NDT Lab for bench specimens and reference blocks, a Welding Workshop for weld coupons and fabrication joints, an Aircraft Hangar for airframe and component inspection, an Oil & Gas Site covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant, and a Storage Tank environment with UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. Louisville uses more of them than most cities.
Rubbertown and power-plant crews will spend most of their time in the Oil & Gas Site, the largest environment at 73 jobs. Although it is modelled as a process plant from the oil and gas world, the inspection tasks it teaches, including piping corrosion, exchanger tubes, alloy verification and weld inspection, are the same tasks chemical and power plants depend on. The Storage Tank environment fits the tank farms that sit throughout the chemical corridor. The Welding Workshop, with 52 jobs, suits fabrication shops, maintenance contractors and anyone inspecting new-build piping at the power plant. The Aircraft Hangar, with 54 jobs, is relevant to aviation maintenance around the cargo hub and the airport. The NDT Lab, with 52 bench jobs, is where new hires should start.
Methods You Can Practice: IRIS, PMI, Ultrasonic Testing Simulator and More
Practical NDT covers twelve methods. On the surface side there are PT, MT and VT. For volumetric inspection there are contact UT, phased array UT, TOFD and RT. Electromagnetic methods are ET and MFL. The platform also includes LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS internal rotary UT for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and PMI for alloy verification. For Louisville’s chemical and power work, IRIS and PMI are standouts. IRIS scenarios walk you through inspecting tube bundles, reading wall-loss maps and separating general thinning from pitting and fretting. PMI scenarios rehearse alloy confirmation on piping components, the check that catches a carbon steel part where an alloy should be.
The ultrasonic testing simulator side covers thickness surveys and angle-beam weld inspection, and the phased array simulator lets you build and interpret sectorial scans on weld geometries, sizing lack of fusion, cracking, porosity and slag. TOFD scenarios add diffraction-based sizing for thicker welds. LRUT scenarios teach screening of long piping runs, including those crossing pipe racks and road crossings, and deciding where detailed follow-up is warranted. MFL scenarios in the Storage Tank environment cover floor screening. Eddy current scenarios in the Aircraft Hangar cover crack detection around fasteners and in thin structure. MT and PT cover surface-breaking indications on welds and attachments, and VT builds the habit of a structured visual first.
Built for Every Skill Level
New trainees start with 33 guided lessons that introduce each method step by step, with immediate feedback that shows exactly what went right and wrong on each attempt. For Louisville, where many people enter inspection from welding, millwright, pipefitting or manufacturing backgrounds, that structured start is a practical way to build fundamentals before formal classroom training and supervised field hours.
Working technicians use Practical NDT as a refresher. A Level II heading into a spring turnaround can rehearse IRIS interpretation and PMI checks the week before. A fabrication inspector can practise phased array interpretation on a joint configuration they will soon meet at the power plant. Level IIIs and team leads can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark a crew objectively on identical jobs and see where coverage is thin, for example strong corrosion mapping but weak crack characterisation. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training.
NDT Practical Exam Preparation: Complementing Formal ASNT Training
Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not grant any level, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens required by ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer’s written practice. Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer’s written practice defines the training hours, experience and examinations, and the practical exam is conducted with real equipment and real specimens under the responsible Level III. No simulator result substitutes for that.
Where the simulator earns its place is in preparation and retention. A candidate who has already rehearsed an IRIS inspection or a phased array setup many times uses real lab time efficiently and arrives at the practical exam with fewer surprises. After certification, the same platform keeps skills current between assignments. That is why Practical NDT sits alongside our NDT training and certification programs, not in place of them. Some Louisville-area plant owners may also expect inspectors to hold industry inspector credentials for in-service piping, vessels or tanks; those are employer requirements and market context only, and Practical NDT does not train toward or certify to them.
Louisville’s Inspection Map: Rubbertown, Mill Creek, Assembly Plants and Worldport
Rubbertown sits along the Ohio River in southwest Louisville. The district began with synthetic rubber plants during the Second World War and today hosts chemical, polymer and specialty chemical manufacturing on sites that have been operating for generations. Older plants mean older piping, vessels and tanks, and that drives steady demand for corrosion inspection, exchanger work and turnaround surges. These operations are named here only as industry context, not as Atlantis customers.
Power generation is a second pillar. LG&E’s Mill Creek Generating Station, on the river in the Kosmosdale area, broke ground in 2024 on a new natural gas combined-cycle unit expected to enter service around 2027. New-build power projects mean weld inspection on piping and structural steel during construction, followed by in-service inspection of boiler and heat-recovery tubes, headers and high-energy piping for decades afterwards.
Manufacturing is the third pillar. Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant and Kentucky Truck Plant are among the largest vehicle plants in the country, and the supplier base around them runs welding, stamping and machining operations where weld quality, tooling integrity and incoming material checks matter. Finally, UPS Worldport at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport makes the city one of the busiest cargo airports anywhere, supporting a regional aviation maintenance workforce. For radiography, Kentucky is an NRC Agreement State, and radioactive materials licensing for industrial radiography runs through the state’s radiation health program within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
NDT Practice in Louisville Without Tying Up Specimens or Lab Benches
Louisville has a mature inspection services market, but specimen libraries and experienced trainers are still limited resources, and they tend to be busiest exactly when everyone needs them, in the run-up to turnaround season. Practical NDT removes that bottleneck for practice. Technicians can rehearse in the evening, on a rotation off-week, or in a site trailer during downtime. A trainee on the night shift can complete a guided lesson without anyone supervising, and a team lead can assign the same scenarios to crews working on opposite sides of the city or across the river in southern Indiana.
For employers and contractors, shared scenarios make skill differences visible early. When every technician works the same jobs, a Level III can see who is confident with IRIS maps and who needs more supervised time before being trusted with acceptance calls. That supports staffing decisions and targeted coaching while leaving the certification process and supervised experience your written practice requires exactly where they belong.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?
No. It is a practice and readiness tool. ASNT SNT-TC-1A certification follows your employer’s written practice, including a practical exam on real specimens with real equipment. Practical NDT helps you prepare and stay current but does not certify.
What experience level is it for?
All levels. Trainees follow 33 guided lessons, working technicians use rare-defect refreshers between assignments, and Level IIIs and team leads build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews and identify coverage gaps.
Is it relevant to chemical plants and not just oil and gas?
Yes. The Oil & Gas Site is modelled as a process plant, and the tasks it teaches, including piping corrosion surveys, IRIS on exchanger tubes, PMI alloy verification and weld inspection, are the same tasks chemical and power plants rely on.
Can it help before a turnaround?
That is one of its best uses. Technicians can rehearse the less common jobs they are likely to face, such as IRIS interpretation, PMI checks or crack sizing with phased array and TOFD, in the weeks before the outage starts.
