NDT Training and Certification in Ontario

Short answer: Ontario employers and technicians can take ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT training from Atlantis NDT through live online classes, private live-virtual cohorts, or onsite delivery at their own plant, shop or yard. We teach Level I and II in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation. An ASNT NDT Level III leads every course, and your employer certifies you under its written practice.

Here is the honest part first. Canada's national NDT certification scheme is CAN/CGSB-48.9712, the Canadian version of ISO 9712, and most Canadian code work in Ontario is written around it. Ontario's nuclear sector, CWB-certified structural fabricators and many provincial and municipal owners ask for it. Atlantis NDT does not train toward CAN/CGSB-48.9712, and we do not claim any CGSB recognition. Our training follows the American employer-based scheme, SNT-TC-1A. Ontario sits right on the border with Michigan, Ohio and New York, and many Ontario companies sell across it. That creates a real group of people for whom SNT-TC-1A is the right choice: fabricators building ASME- or API-code equipment for US plants, suppliers to US automotive, aerospace and energy customers, US-owned operators with sites on both sides of the border, inspection companies sending crews to Detroit, Toledo or Buffalo, and technicians who plan to work in the US. This page explains where that fit is real, maps Ontario's NDT economy region by region, and shows how to request an Ontario NDT training quote. We usually reply within one business day.

SNT-TC-1A or CAN/CGSB-48.9712: what Ontario employers actually ask for

Direct answer: for Canadian-code work in Ontario, including nuclear, CSA W59 structural steel, and much provincially regulated pressure equipment, expect CAN/CGSB-48.9712 to be required or preferred. SNT-TC-1A is what US clients, ASME-stamped work for US sites, API 1104 cross-border pipeline projects and US employers expect. Many Ontario technicians end up holding both.

The Canadian scheme is also in transition. The Canadian General Standards Board, which published CAN/CGSB-48.9712, ceased operations on 1 April 2026. Published guidance says the standard stays valid through its current cycle and that existing certificates are unaffected. Natural Resources Canada's NDT Certification Body has said its certification services continue without interruption, and the CWB Group remains accredited to certify NDT personnel to the same standard. Before you build a CGSB plan, confirm the current certification body. Our part is SNT-TC-1A. If a job needs a CGSB certificate, we will tell you so before you spend money on the wrong course.

Where NDT technicians work in Ontario

Direct answer: Ontario NDT work is spread across seven clusters. They are Sarnia-Lambton's Chemical Valley, the nuclear stations on Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, Hamilton's steel and fabrication base, the Nanticoke industrial park, the Greater Toronto Area's aerospace, transit and manufacturing economy, the automotive belt from Windsor to Oshawa, and the mining and smelting districts of Sudbury and the north.

Sarnia-Lambton: Chemical Valley and the border crossing

Sarnia and the surrounding townships of St. Clair and Moore form Ontario's largest refining and petrochemical cluster. Three refineries operate there, alongside polymer, rubber, chemical and specialty plants, a deep-water port and pipeline terminals tied to the US Midwest. Enbridge Gas's Dawn storage hub sits just to the east, near Dawn-Euphemia. Turnarounds bring heavy demand for UT thickness and PAUT corrosion mapping, TOFD on heavy-wall vessels, RT of piping repairs, ET of exchanger bundles, and MT and PT on rotating equipment. Sarnia is connected to Port Huron, Michigan by the Blue Water Bridge, and contractors cross in both directions. That is exactly where SNT-TC-1A certification earns its keep. See NDT training in Sarnia and Sarnia Level III consulting.

Ontario's nuclear fleet: Bruce, Darlington and Pickering

Ontario runs a large share of Canada's nuclear generation. Bruce Power's site at Tiverton on Lake Huron, OPG's Darlington station in Clarington, and the Pickering station east of Toronto support refurbishment and major component replacement projects, outage inspection programmes, and a supply chain of fabricators and component makers across Durham Region, Peterborough, Cambridge and the GTA. OPG's small modular reactor project at the Darlington site adds new-build work. Nuclear inspection work is done to the CSA N285 series, under CNSC licensing and the operator's own qualification programmes, and it normally requires CGSB-certified personnel. Atlantis does not position SNT-TC-1A training as a route into Canadian nuclear inspection. Nuclear suppliers who also build for US utilities, where ASME Section III and Section XI apply, are a different case. They often run an SNT-TC-1A programme for that US work. For background, see power generation NDT training for the Toronto area.

Hamilton, Niagara and the Golden Horseshoe

Hamilton's integrated steel mills, structural and plate fabricators, and port industries make it one of the most NDT-intensive cities in Canada. Steel mill maintenance means UT on rolls, shafts and crane girders, MT on structural welds, and thickness surveys on furnace and gas systems. The Niagara Peninsula adds hydroelectric stations at Queenston, with penstocks, gates and turbine parts needing periodic UT, MT and VT, as well as Welland Canal infrastructure and shipyard work at Port Weller. Many Hamilton and Niagara shops ship pressure equipment and fabrications to US buyers across the Peace Bridge and the Queenston-Lewiston crossing. Related pages: Hamilton NDT consulting and Hamilton simulator practice.

Nanticoke and Haldimand County

The Nanticoke industrial area on Lake Erie has a refinery and a large steel works. Both rely on outage and turnaround inspection: UT and PAUT on piping and vessels, RT on repair welds, and MT and VT on structures and lifting equipment. Contractors from Hamilton, Brantford and Simcoe staff much of this work.

Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area

The GTA is Ontario's largest market for manufacturing and maintenance inspection, though not for heavy process plant. Aerospace companies in Mississauga, Brampton, Ajax and around Pearson airport build landing gear, structures and systems and maintain aircraft, so PT, MT, ET and UT are routine. Many of these customers follow NAS 410 or prime-specific rules, which Atlantis can discuss but does not train toward. Transit construction and maintenance, bridges and highway structures, data centres, and commercial building steel add structural UT and MT under CSA W59. Food, pharmaceutical and chemical plants across Peel, York and Durham have pressure vessels and piping inspected under TSSA rules. See Practical NDT in Toronto and Toronto Level III consulting.

The automotive belt: Windsor to Oshawa

Vehicle assembly plants in Windsor, Oakville, Alliston, Cambridge, Woodstock, Ingersoll and Oshawa, together with hundreds of parts suppliers and the new battery and EV supply chain, use NDT on castings, forgings, welds and bonded joints. ET and UT check heat treatment, weld quality and wall thickness, and PT and MT check castings and forgings. Windsor faces Detroit across the river, and many suppliers work under US customer quality systems that reference SNT-TC-1A.

Sudbury, Timmins and northern Ontario

Greater Sudbury is one of the world's major nickel and copper mining and smelting centres. The Timmins, Red Lake and Hemlo gold camps, the pulp and paper towns, and Thunder Bay's rail-car manufacturing and grain port add more work. Mining and processing equipment, hoists, headframes, crushers, haul trucks and smelter vessels need MT and UT on welds, shafts and structures, plus thickness surveys on process piping. Employers here are usually far from any classroom, so online theory plus onsite practicals makes sense. See Practical NDT in Sudbury.

Ottawa and eastern Ontario

Ottawa has defence, aerospace, electronics and research laboratories. Eastern Ontario adds chemical and manufacturing plants along the St. Lawrence corridor. Typical work includes PT and ET on precision components and UT and MT on structural and pressure equipment. See Practical NDT in Ottawa.

NDT training by city in Ontario

Direct answer: Atlantis has a dedicated NDT training page for Sarnia, a power-generation training page for the Toronto area, and Practical NDT simulator pages for Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Sudbury and Sarnia. Every Ontario city is served the same way, with live online classes and onsite delivery at the employer's site. We have no Ontario classroom.

Sarnia. Contractors here run turnaround-driven programmes and often hold work on both sides of the St. Clair River. A typical Sarnia request is UT and PAUT Level II for a turnaround crew, plus a written practice that a US owner's auditor will accept.

Toronto. GTA requests are more varied: PT and ET for aerospace and automotive suppliers, NDT awareness and Level II theory for quality engineers, and Level III preparation for people who sign off procedures. Expect your customer's specification to decide the scheme.

Hamilton. Fabricators building pressure equipment and structures for US buyers are the main audience. Training usually runs onsite in the shop, around production, with practical specimens from the shop's own weld procedures.

Sudbury and northern Ontario. Mining employers usually want MT and UT Level II for maintenance staff. Distance makes live online theory and a short onsite practical block the sensible model.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Ontario, step by step

Direct answer: under SNT-TC-1A, an Ontario employer certifies its own technicians. You complete the classroom hours and documented experience set by the employer's written practice, pass general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and pass a vision test. The certification belongs to that employer's programme. It is not a national Canadian certificate.

  1. Written practice. Your employer adopts an SNT-TC-1A written practice that sets hours, exams and recertification. We can write or update it: written practice development.
  2. Classroom training. Complete the formal hours your written practice requires, live online or onsite. The training requirements matrix lists SNT-TC-1A recommendations by method and level.
  3. On-the-job experience. Log supervised experience in the method on real work, with records your employer keeps.
  4. General, specific and practical exams. Theory, your employer's procedures and codes, and hands-on specimens, all administered under a Level III.
  5. Vision test. Near-vision and colour contrast, normally annual.
  6. Certification by the employer. The employer certifies you for the method and level. A new employer must recertify you under its own practice.
  7. Recertification. At the interval your written practice sets.

If you are also pursuing CGSB certification, keep one clean experience log that can serve both schemes, and check the certification body's evidence rules early.

Radiography licensing and other Ontario requirements

Direct answer: gamma radiography in Ontario is federally regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Operators must be CNSC-certified exposure device operators or be directly supervised by one. Industrial X-ray equipment falls under Ontario's X-ray safety rules under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Boilers, pressure vessels and many pipelines are administered by TSSA.

Industrial radiography

Canada has no Agreement State system, so the CNSC licenses nuclear substances and exposure devices across Ontario. Operating an exposure device requires CNSC exposure device operator (EDO) certification or direct supervision by a certified EDO. CNSC guidance describes formal EDO vocational training and a supervised on-the-job programme before the written exam, with CSA PCP-09 as the certification guide. Atlantis RT training covers technique, image quality, interpretation and code acceptance. It does not replace EDO certification. X-ray generators are registered and controlled provincially, and your radiation safety officer will know the current Ontario requirements.

Boilers and pressure vessels: TSSA

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority administers the Technical Standards and Safety Act for the Province, including its boilers and pressure vessels regulation and its oil and gas pipeline systems regulation. TSSA rules cover design registration, construction, repairs, alterations and in-service inspection, with CSA B51 and the ASME code sections as the main technical references. Inspection companies working in Ontario should read our TSSA compliance guide. Check with TSSA and the owner which NDE personnel certification they accept for each job.

Nuclear

Nuclear power plants are licensed by the CNSC, and periodic and in-service inspection follows the CSA N285 series. The licensee's qualification programme governs NDT personnel, and CGSB certification is the normal baseline. This work is outside the scope of Atlantis training.

Pipelines and codes used in Ontario

Interprovincial and international pipelines, including lines crossing at Sarnia and Windsor, fall under the Canada Energy Regulator. Intra-provincial oil and gas pipelines are covered by TSSA's regulation, with CSA Z662 as the core standard. API 1104 still appears on projects with US owners or contractors. Other codes common in Ontario include ASME Section V, VIII and IX, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, CSA W59 and CSA S6 for structures and bridges, and AWS D1.1 for US-bound structural work.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Ontario

Direct answer: Atlantis delivers Ontario training as live online seats for individuals, private live-virtual cohorts for one employer, or onsite training at your plant or shop led by a Level III. Practical sessions use real specimens, usually your own, at your site.

Ontario is large. The trip from Windsor to Sudbury is longer than many cross-border hops, and the province's NDT employers range from a Sarnia contractor with a big turnaround crew to a Thunder Bay shop with two inspectors. Online theory removes the travel. Onsite practicals keep training tied to the procedures and parts your technicians actually inspect. We schedule around spring and fall turnaround seasons in Chemical Valley and Nanticoke, steel mill and smelter outages, automotive model-year changeovers and summer shutdowns.

We have no Ontario classroom and do not suggest otherwise. Ask about onsite training for your Ontario crew, or read about online NDT training and corporate programmes.

For Ontario employers: written practice and Level III services

Direct answer: Ontario employers that need SNT-TC-1A certification for US customers or US-code work need a written practice, a Level III for examinations and procedure approval, and audit-ready records. Atlantis provides these remotely or onsite. That includes companies that keep CGSB-certified staff for Canadian work.

The cross-border position of Ontario industry means many companies run two certification systems. A Hamilton fabricator might use CGSB-certified technicians on a CSA W59 bridge job and SNT-TC-1A-certified technicians on an ASME vessel for an Ohio refinery. A Windsor parts supplier might have a US customer whose quality manual requires an SNT-TC-1A written practice and an identified Level III. We help with:

Practise before your practical exam

Direct answer: the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator lets Ontario trainees practise 12 methods in 5 virtual environments in a browser before their hands-on exam. It is practice, not certification. It does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that your written practice, or a CGSB scheme, requires.

The NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site and storage tank environments cover most of what Ontario technicians see, from Chemical Valley piping to aerospace parts in the GTA. Trainees use the simulator to rehearse scan coverage, calibration steps and indication recognition. Supervisors use it to check readiness before booking exam time. See Practical NDT and Practical NDT in Ontario. For written practice questions, try the UT Level II practice questions.

Your instructor

Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He prepares the course material, the examinations and the employer written practices, and he is the person to talk to when you need a straight answer about whether SNT-TC-1A, CGSB or both fit your Ontario work.

NDT training in Ontario: frequently asked questions

How do I get NDT certified in Ontario?

For most Canadian-code work, get CAN/CGSB-48.9712 (ISO 9712) certification through an accredited certification body. Confirm the current certification body, as arrangements changed in 2026. For US clients, US-code work or US employers, you are certified by your employer under SNT-TC-1A. Atlantis trains for the SNT-TC-1A route only.

Can I take NDT training online in Ontario?

Yes. Atlantis runs live online and live-virtual SNT-TC-1A classes for Ontario technicians. Practical training and exams happen on real specimens, normally at your employer's site. See online NDT training.

Is SNT-TC-1A recognised in Ontario?

It is recognised by US customers and by owners whose specifications accept it, and it is the norm for ASME work going to the US. It is not the national Canadian scheme. Nuclear work and much CSA-code work expect CGSB certification.

Does Atlantis offer CGSB training in Ontario?

No. We do not train toward CAN/CGSB-48.9712 or ISO 9712 and claim no CGSB recognition. If you need a CGSB certificate, choose a CGSB-route provider.

Do I need a licence for industrial radiography in Ontario?

For gamma radiography, yes. You need CNSC exposure device operator certification or direct supervision by a certified EDO, and your employer needs a CNSC licence. X-ray equipment falls under Ontario's X-ray safety rules.

How much does NDT training cost in Ontario?

It is quoted on request. The price depends on the method, level, group size, online or onsite delivery, and whether you also need a written practice or Level III services. Cohort and onsite quotes usually come back within one business day. Request an Ontario quote.

Which NDT methods are most in demand in Ontario?

UT and PAUT lead in refining, steel and power. MT and PT are everywhere in fabrication, mining and automotive, ET matters for exchangers and aerospace, and RT is used for piping and pipeline welds.

Can you train our crew onsite in Sarnia, Hamilton or Sudbury?

Yes. Onsite delivery at your plant, shop or mine site is a standard option. The instructor uses your equipment and specimens and supports practical exams under your written practice.

How long does UT Level II training take?

It depends on your employer's written practice. SNT-TC-1A recommends minimum classroom and experience hours, listed in the training requirements matrix, and the experience usually takes much longer than the classroom part.

Can Ontario technicians use SNT-TC-1A certification in Michigan or New York?

SNT-TC-1A certification belongs to the employer that issues it. A US employer will review your training and experience records and certify you under its own written practice. Well-documented Atlantis training records make that review easier.

Can I become a Level III in Ontario?

Yes. For ASNT Level III, prepare for the Basic and method exams with our online Level III preparation. A CGSB Level 3 follows the certification body's own path.

What do NDT technicians earn in Ontario?

It varies by method, level, sector and overtime, and we do not publish our own salary numbers. See the NDT salary guide for context.
