NDT Training and Certification in California
Short answer: California technicians and employers can get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III training from Atlantis NDT through live online classes, a private live-virtual cohort, or onsite delivery at the employer's refinery, shipyard, hangar or shop anywhere in the state. An ASNT NDT Level III leads each programme, practical exams use real specimens at your facility, and certification is issued by the employer under its written practice.
California's NDT market looks nothing like the Gulf Coast. Refining is concentrated in two clusters, the Los Angeles basin and the San Francisco Bay Area, and it operates under some of the strictest process-safety rules in the country. Aerospace and space launch are far bigger here than anywhere else, from El Segundo and Hawthorne to Palmdale and Vandenberg. San Diego builds and repairs Navy ships, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach handle a huge share of US container traffic, Caltrans and the seismic-retrofit programme keep bridge and structural steel inspection busy, and the Central Valley still produces oil around Bakersfield. This hub sets out where California NDT work happens, which methods and codes each sector uses, what the California Department of Public Health requires from radiography crews, and how we deliver training without anyone travelling to a centre. Where NDT technicians work in California
Direct answer: California NDT jobs concentrate in Southern California aerospace and space (El Segundo, Hawthorne, Long Beach, Palmdale), Los Angeles basin and Bay Area refineries, San Diego naval shipbuilding and repair, the Kern County oil fields around Bakersfield, and statewide bridge, seismic and port infrastructure. Aerospace pushes ET, PT and UT; refining pushes UT, PAUT and RT.
Los Angeles basin and the South Bay
The South Bay holds the Chevron El Segundo refinery and the refineries of Carson, Wilmington and Torrance, along with tank farms and marine terminals around the twin ports. Here, refinery safety rules under Cal/OSHA's process safety management regulation for petroleum refineries (adopted after the 2012 Richmond fire) drive rigorous damage-mechanism reviews and mechanical-integrity inspection, so UT thickness surveys, PAUT corrosion mapping, radiography of process piping and ET on exchanger tubes are all in demand. The same area is the heart of US space and aerospace: satellite and launch-vehicle builders in El Segundo and Hawthorne, the Los Angeles Air Force Base and Space Systems Command, and aerospace suppliers across Torrance, Long Beach and Orange County. Aerospace and space work leans heavily on penetrant, eddy current, ultrasonic and radiographic inspection of structures, welds, composites and castings.
Antelope Valley and the high desert
Palmdale's Air Force Plant 42 hosts major defence aircraft programmes, and Edwards Air Force Base nearby is the home of flight testing. Mojave hosts commercial space and flight-test firms. Inspection here is aerospace-grade, typically certified to NAS 410, with large demand for UT on composites, ET on metallic structures and PT on components.
San Francisco Bay Area
The Bay Area's refining cluster includes Chevron's Richmond refinery and the Martinez refining complex, together with renewable-fuel conversions at Rodeo and nearby chemical and terminal operations along the Carquinez Strait. Bay Area refinery inspection carries the same Cal/OSHA process-safety requirements as the South Bay. The region also has ship repair, bridge maintenance on some of the country's largest steel and concrete spans, and a growing battery and advanced-manufacturing sector across the East Bay and South Bay.
San Diego
San Diego is the main West Coast hub for Navy shipbuilding and repair. The NASSCO shipyard builds auxiliary and commercial ships, and Naval Base San Diego and Naval Air Station North Island support large fleet maintenance and aircraft repair. Ship work follows NAVSEA technical publications (for example the NAVSEA NDT requirements used on Navy work) alongside AWS D1.1 and class rules, which means UT, MT, PT, RT and VT on hull and piping welds. Aerospace suppliers and drone manufacturers round out the market.
Central Valley, Kern County and the Central Coast
Kern County around Bakersfield remains California's oil and gas heartland, with producing fields, steam-flood operations, gathering lines, tanks and a refinery. NDT work includes pipeline and tank inspection, UT thickness on steam lines and vessels, and radiography of welds. Fresno and Sacramento add agricultural processing, food plants and state infrastructure, while the Central Coast hosts Vandenberg Space Force Base (orbital launches) and Diablo Canyon, California's last operating nuclear plant, where outage work follows ASME Section XI.
Ports, bridges and seismic work statewide
The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Oakland and smaller ports rely on cranes, wharves and terminal tanks that need structural and corrosion inspection. Caltrans' toll-bridge and seismic-retrofit programmes made welded steel inspection to AWS D1.5 and ultrasonic testing of large welds a familiar part of California work, and building-code special inspection of structural welds adds a constant base of UT and MT for construction projects.
ASNT Level I, II and III courses for California employers
Direct answer: Atlantis NDT delivers SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and II courses in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET for California employers, plus Level III exam preparation. Refineries and construction lean on UT, PAUT and RT; aerospace and space lean on PT, ET and UT; shipyards lean on UT, MT, PT and VT.
| Method | Levels | What California employers use it for | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic testing (UT) | I, II, III prep | Refinery thickness surveys in El Segundo and Richmond, structural weld UT on seismic and building projects, composite inspection in aerospace | Level I: per written practice. Level II: Level I plus experience |
| Phased array UT (PAUT) | II, III prep | Corrosion mapping in Bay Area and South Bay refineries, weld inspection on bridges and heavy construction | UT Level II recommended |
| Time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) | II | Thick-section welds on vessels and heavy structures | UT Level II recommended |
| Radiographic testing (RT) | I, II, III prep | Process piping in refineries, castings and welds in aerospace, Navy ship piping in San Diego | State radiographer certification requirements for field work |
| Magnetic particle (MT) | I, II, III prep | Structural steel welds, ship hull and frame welds, aerospace ferrous components | Per written practice |
| Liquid penetrant (PT) | I, II, III prep | Aerospace and space components in El Segundo, Hawthorne and Palmdale, stainless piping welds | Per written practice |
| Visual testing (VT) | I, II, III prep | Weld visual on every job, port and bridge structures, refinery equipment | Per written practice |
| Eddy current (ET) | I, II, III prep | Aircraft structure and engine inspection, exchanger tubes in refinery turnarounds | Per written practice |
Method detail is on UT Level 2, eddy current Level 2, PT Level 2 and PAUT Level 2. Senior technicians and employers who want an in-house Level III can use ASNT Level III training. One honest note for California aerospace: many primes and their suppliers certify NDT personnel to NAS 410 rather than SNT-TC-1A. Our method theory content is relevant either way, but your certification must follow whatever standard your customer contract specifies, so we confirm it before quoting.
NDT training by city in California
Direct answer: Atlantis NDT has California training pages for Los Angeles, El Segundo, Martinez, San Diego, Southern California and the West Coast, plus Practical NDT pages for other cities. None is a physical training centre; each explains local demand and how we deliver online or onsite at your facility.

Los Angeles and El Segundo. The South Bay mixes refinery inspection with aerospace and space manufacturing, so a single training request can cover UT and RT for a refinery contractor and PT and ET for a satellite supplier in the same postcode. Refinery contractors usually ask for UT, PAUT and RT Level II and help with written practices that will stand up to owner audits.
San Diego. Ship repair contractors and their subcontractors need UT, MT, PT and VT technicians who understand Navy requirements. Because Navy work follows NAVSEA documents for personnel qualification, we confirm the governing requirement first and use SNT-TC-1A-based training where the employer's programme allows it.
Martinez, Richmond and the Bay Area. Bay Area refinery contractors face the same Cal/OSHA process-safety regime as the South Bay. Training demand is for UT thickness and corrosion mapping, ET for exchanger bundles and RT for piping, timed around planned turnarounds.
Bakersfield. Kern County oilfield and pipeline employers need UT and RT technicians for steam lines, gathering lines and tanks. Crews are spread across the valley, so live online theory followed by a short onsite practical block works best.
Sacramento and Fresno. Central Valley employers in food processing, equipment fabrication and infrastructure maintenance tend to need VT, MT, PT and UT Level I and II for in-house quality control.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in California, step by step
Direct answer: California NDT certification under ASNT SNT-TC-1A is employer-based. The employer's written practice sets the rules, you complete classroom training and supervised experience, a Level III gives general, specific and practical exams, you pass a vision test, and the employer certifies you. Radiographers also need state radiation credentials.
- Employer written practice. The employer adopts a written practice based on SNT-TC-1A or CP-189. Need one? See written practice development.
- Formal training. Complete the classroom hours the written practice requires, documented with course records.
- Supervised experience. Log on-the-job hours in the method; the training requirements matrix shows typical figures.
- General and specific exams. Written exams on theory and on your employer's procedures and codes (ASME V, B31.3, AWS D1.1 or D1.5, customer specifications).
- Practical exam. Hands-on testing on flawed specimens, graded by a Level III, held at your facility.
- Vision test. Near-vision and colour-contrast checks at the written-practice interval.
- Certification and recertification. The employer certifies and later recertifies you; see Level II recertification.
California employers in aerospace and defence often run more than one scheme side by side, with SNT-TC-1A for industrial work and NAS 410 for flight hardware. If that applies to you, keep separate records for each and make sure your written practice says which scheme covers which work. Background: SNT-TC-1A training and certification.
Radiography licensing and other California requirements
Direct answer: California has been an NRC Agreement State since 1962. Industrial radiography is regulated by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Radiologic Health Branch under Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations. Radiographers must meet the state's certification requirements in addition to their employer's SNT-TC-1A level.
CDPH licenses radioactive-material radiography and registers X-ray equipment used for industrial radiography. Under Title 17, a radiographer must be certified as the regulations require (the rules refer to Section 30335.2, with alternatives set out in related sections), and radiographer trainers must meet additional experience requirements. CDPH also publishes guidance on what inspectors check during field radiography inspections, covering things such as surveys, posting, personnel monitoring and documentation. Rules change, so confirm current requirements with CDPH before planning a programme.
Atlantis NDT's RT courses cover radiographic technique, exposure, film and digital interpretation and acceptance criteria for SNT-TC-1A Level I and II. The state radiation-safety training and certification are separate requirements, handled through your radiation safety officer. We help employers plan both so trainees progress in parallel.
Boilers and pressure vessels. In California, boiler and pressure vessel safety sits with Cal/OSHA's Pressure Vessel Unit within the Department of Industrial Relations. NDT work on repairs and alterations follows the National Board Inspection Code and ASME Sections I and VIII.
Refinery process safety. Cal/OSHA's process safety management regulation for petroleum refineries sets demanding requirements for damage-mechanism reviews and mechanical integrity, which directly drive inspection volume and documentation quality at California refineries.
Pipelines. The California Public Utilities Commission oversees intrastate gas pipeline safety, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal's pipeline safety programme covers intrastate hazardous-liquid pipelines, with PHMSA for interstate lines. API 1104 governs most pipeline weld inspection.
Codes commonly used in California. ASME V, VIII and B31.3 in refineries; AWS D1.1 and D1.5 for structural and bridge steel, along with building-code special inspection of structural welds; NAVSEA requirements on Navy ships in San Diego; ASME Section XI at Diablo Canyon; NAS 410 for aerospace; and API 1104 for pipelines. Some employers also ask for AWS CWI, ICC special-inspector or API inspector credentials for particular roles. Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A only; we mention these only as local context.
Online, live-virtual and onsite training across California
Direct answer: California technicians can take theory live online, join a private live-virtual cohort for their employer, or have an Atlantis Level III deliver the course onsite at their refinery, yard, hangar or shop. Atlantis has no training centre in California; practical exams happen at the client's facility on real specimens.
- Live online. Instructor-led theory with attendance records, ideal across a state where a drive from Bakersfield to the Bay Area or San Diego eats a whole day. See online NDT training.
- Private live-virtual cohort. A group from one employer, scheduled around shifts, with content mapped to that employer's written practice, procedures and customer specifications.
- Onsite. A Level III teaches the hands-on portion and runs practical exams at your facility. See corporate NDT training.
Scheduling in California follows refinery turnaround plans, aerospace programme milestones and Navy ship availability periods rather than a single seasonal pattern. Wildfire-season air quality and heat can also affect outdoor practical sessions in summer and autumn, so we build some flexibility into onsite dates. Ask about onsite training for your California team.
For California employers: written practice and Level III services
Direct answer: California refinery contractors, fabricators, shipyard subcontractors and aerospace suppliers use Atlantis NDT to write or update SNT-TC-1A written practices, provide outside Level III services, administer exams and train whole teams. Owner audits and customer source inspections look at precisely these records.
Gaps we often find include written practices that do not cover PAUT or digital radiography, no defined rule for crediting previous experience, missing vision-test records, and practical exams without documented grading. Companies that work in both industrial and aerospace sectors sometimes mix SNT-TC-1A and NAS 410 requirements in one document, which confuses auditors. We can review your documents, write a clean written practice, prepare exam banks, and act as your examining Level III.

Practise before your practical exam
Direct answer: The Atlantis Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees rehearse 12 methods in five environments, including an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site, a storage tank, a welding workshop and an NDT lab. It is practice only and never replaces the practical exam on real specimens set by your Level III.
California aerospace trainees will use the aircraft hangar scene most, refinery trainees the oil and gas site and storage tank, and shipyard and construction trainees the welding workshop. See Practical NDT, Practical NDT in California, and city pages for Los Angeles and San Diego. For written practice, try the UT Level 2 practice questions.
Your instructor
Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He designs the course content, maps it to each employer's written practice and oversees exams. On onsite programmes in California he works with your Level III or serves as examining Level III where you do not have one.
