NDT Simulator and Hands-On Practice in Fresno

Fresno sits in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley, and the valley's industrial plant is easy to underestimate. Food processing lines, packing houses and cold-storage warehouses run on boilers, steam systems, pressure vessels and ammonia refrigeration piping. Natural gas transmission lines cross the valley floor. East of the city, hydroelectric and pumped-storage plants in the Sierra Nevada depend on penstocks, valves and turbines that need regular inspection. The California high-speed rail programme has put viaducts and steel structures into the local landscape, and the city's airport hosts a California Air National Guard fighter wing. All of that creates steady demand for nondestructive testing, often far from a dedicated NDT training lab. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Practical NDT puts that portal in the hands of Fresno inspectors: an immersive, 3D, game-like platform where you work realistic inspection jobs in a browser or app, receive scored feedback instantly, and keep practising until your technique is reliable. It suits a trainee learning a first method and an experienced technician who wants to stay sharp between plant shutdowns.

Why NDT Practice in Fresno Matters: Distance, Seasons and Plant Shutdowns

Two things make hands-on practice difficult in the Central Valley. The first is distance. Specialised NDT training centres, specimen libraries and advanced equipment tend to be concentrated in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and the Gulf Coast. A Fresno technician who wants to rehearse phased array or TOFD on flawed specimens may face a long drive and a day or more away from work, which is hard to justify for a routine refresher. The second is seasonality. The valley's food processing industry follows the harvest, and many plants schedule maintenance outages for the off-season. Inspection demand therefore arrives in bursts: a plant goes down, and suddenly boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping and tanks all need to be inspected in a tight window. Between those bursts, technicians may do little of the more demanding volumetric work.

That pattern is exactly where skills fade. Setting up an angle-beam UT scan on a pressure vessel nozzle, sizing wall loss on a corroded pipe, interpreting IRIS data from a condenser tube bundle or verifying alloy grade on replacement fittings are all skills that improve with repetition and decline without it. Safety raises the stakes. Ammonia refrigeration systems, high-pressure steam and gas lines are unforgiving if a flaw is missed. Practical NDT gives Fresno technicians a way to practise between outages without specimens or travel, so they arrive at the next shutdown with their hands and eyes already warmed up.

Methods You Can Practice, from Contact UT to IRIS and PMI

Practical NDT includes 12 methods. Surface methods are PT, MT and VT. Volumetric methods are contact UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT. Electromagnetic methods are eddy current and MFL. The platform also covers LRUT guided-wave screening for long pipe runs, IRIS internal rotary ultrasonic inspection of heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and PMI for alloy verification.

For a Fresno user, the Oil and Gas Site environment is often the most relevant, even though the valley's plants are food and utility facilities rather than refineries. With 73 jobs covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process-plant setting, it contains the equipment types that appear in any steam, refrigeration or gas plant: piping, vessels, heat exchangers and tube bundles. You can practise UT thickness surveys and corrosion mapping, IRIS on exchanger tubes, LRUT screening on long pipe runs, and PMI on alloy components where the wrong material could lead to failure.

The Storage Tank environment adds UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, which is useful for anyone who inspects water, fuel or process storage tanks at agricultural and industrial sites. The Welding Workshop, with 52 jobs, lets you practise weld inspection on coupons and fabrication joints with UT, PAUT, TOFD, MT and PT, which is valuable for repair welds made during an outage and for structural fabrication. And for those supporting military aviation, the Aircraft Hangar environment offers 54 airframe and component jobs focused on methods such as eddy current and UT.

Built for Every Skill Level

New trainees in Fresno often come from welding programmes, plant maintenance, millwright work or the military. For them, Practical NDT offers 33 guided lessons that build fundamentals step by step, covering what each method detects, how the equipment is set up, what a reference standard is for, and how to plan coverage. Each attempt is scored and the feedback is specific, so a trainee sees exactly which step went wrong and can repeat the job until it is right.

Working technicians use the platform differently. If you hold a UT Level II but the last few months were spent on visual checks or on non-NDT maintenance work, you can run rare-defect refreshers between assignments. That might mean drilling pitting and wall loss on a corroded pipe, cracking at a nozzle weld, or tube-end thinning in an exchanger, the indications you may only see once or twice a year in the valley but must recognise when they appear.

Level IIIs and inspection leads, including those who manage contract crews for multiple plants, can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively on the same jobs, and find coverage gaps before an outage begins. If a crew is strong on thickness gauging but uncertain with IRIS or PMI, the benchmark shows it before the job does. Adaptive difficulty keeps the scenarios challenging for every level. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who leads Atlantis training.

How It Complements Formal ASNT Training and NDT Practical Exam Preparation

Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification and does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A requires through an employer's written practice. Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer defines training, experience and examination requirements, and the practical exam is performed on actual specimens with actual equipment. The simulator helps you get ready for that exam and helps you stay competent afterwards, but it cannot stand in for it.

For NDT practical exam preparation, the value is repetition. You can run the complete sequence of an inspection many times before the day, so the exam becomes a demonstration of skill rather than a first attempt. For employers, Practical NDT can be one part of an in-house programme, alongside classroom instruction, supervised experience and formal exams. Atlantis offers formal NDT training and certification support and consulting, and Practical NDT is designed to complement it. Some valley employers, particularly pipeline operators, may also require operator qualification under federal pipeline safety rules, and some plant owners follow inspection codes for boilers, pressure vessels and piping; those requirements are local market context your employer will specify, and Practical NDT simply helps you practise the methods that support them.

Fresno and the Central Valley: Food Processing, Sierra Hydro, High-Speed Rail and Military Aviation

Agriculture drives the Fresno economy, and the region's farm employment share is well above the national average. The industrial side of that economy, food processing, packing, cold storage and ingredient manufacturing, depends on pressure equipment. Boilers provide steam for cooking, blanching and cleaning. Ammonia refrigeration systems keep cold storage and processing lines cold, and their vessels and piping are subject to corrosion, especially under insulation. Heat exchangers and evaporators contain tube bundles that thin and pit over time. These are the assets that UT thickness surveys, IRIS, visual inspection and PMI support, and they map directly onto the Oil and Gas Site and Storage Tank environments. California's pressure vessel and boiler oversight through Cal/OSHA adds regulatory weight to that inspection work.

East of Fresno, the Sierra Nevada hosts hydroelectric systems, including the Big Creek hydro project and the Helms pumped storage plant in Fresno County. Penstocks, gates, valves and turbine components need weld and corrosion inspection, and outages there follow their own schedules. On the valley floor, the California high-speed rail programme has built viaducts, bridges and grade separations through Fresno County, bringing structural steel and concrete work that involves weld inspection. Natural gas transmission and distribution networks, and the oil fields of Kern County to the south, add pipeline and upstream work within driving distance.

Military aviation also matters. The California Air National Guard's 144th Fighter Wing is based at Fresno Yosemite International Airport, and Naval Air Station Lemoore sits south-west of the city in Kings County. Aircraft maintenance relies on eddy current, UT, PT and MT, which is where the Aircraft Hangar environment is useful. For radiography anywhere in the state, the California Department of Public Health Radiologic Health Branch sets the requirements; in Practical NDT, RT is virtual, so you rehearse interpretation without a source.

Preparing Fresno Crews for Off-Season Plant Outages

In the San Joaquin Valley, the harvest decides when maintenance happens. Processing plants run hard while crops come in, and many save their major maintenance for the quieter months that follow. When those outages arrive, several plants in the same area can come down within weeks of each other. Boiler inspectors, pressure vessel inspectors, piping inspectors and contract NDT crews are all in demand at once, and the same technicians may move from a tomato cannery to a dairy plant to a cold-storage warehouse in quick succession. Each site has different equipment, different histories and different owner requirements, but the underlying NDT skills are the same.

A practical way to prepare is to treat the month before outage season as a structured refresher. Start with the NDT Lab, where inspectors can rehearse calibration on reference blocks and confirm that their thickness gauging and angle-beam setups are correct. Then move to the Oil and Gas Site environment and focus on the assets that valley plants actually have. Refrigeration vessels and piping often suffer corrosion under insulation, so thickness surveys and corrosion mapping on insulated lines are worth practising. Evaporators, condensers and heat exchangers have tube bundles that pit and thin, so IRIS interpretation belongs on the list. Replacement fittings and valves are sometimes supplied in the wrong alloy, so PMI practice helps inspectors catch material mix-ups before a component goes into service. Long pipe runs between buildings or across yards can be screened with LRUT to decide where detailed follow-up is needed.

The Storage Tank environment adds shell thickness and floor screening practice for water, fuel and process tanks, and the Welding Workshop covers inspection of repair welds, which are common during outages when corroded sections are cut out and replaced. A Level III or crew lead can assign each technician a scenario set matched to the sites they will visit, benchmark results across the crew, and spot coverage gaps, for example someone confident with UT but rusty on MT of repair welds, before the first plant shuts down.

Hydroelectric outages in the Sierra follow a different schedule set by water conditions and grid needs, but the same approach applies: rehearse weld inspection and thickness surveys on penstock-style piping and structural welds before the outage window opens. In every case, the simulator is preparation. Real outage inspections are still carried out under the owner's requirements and the employer's written practice, by qualified personnel, on the actual equipment.

Bringing Practical NDT to Your Fresno Team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and it is particularly useful in places like Fresno where travelling to a lab is costly in time. A rollout usually starts with a demo focused on your work: the Oil and Gas Site and Storage Tank environments for plant and utility teams, the Welding Workshop for fabrication and repair crews, and the Aircraft Hangar for aviation support. Your Level III or inspection lead can then set up trainee sets, pre-outage refresher sets and benchmark sets to compare crews objectively.

Individual technicians looking for hands-on NDT training in Fresno, or virtual NDT training they can use from home, are welcome to contact us. Pricing is quote on request, based on team size and environments. Request a Practical NDT demo for Fresno or email info@atlantisndt.com. If you also need formal instruction, ask about Atlantis NDT training at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?

No. It is a practice and readiness tool. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your employer's written practice governs certification, and the practical exam must be taken on real specimens. Practical NDT helps you prepare and stay current, but it does not certify you or replace any required examination.

What experience level is it for?

All levels. New trainees use 33 guided lessons, working technicians use rare-defect refreshers between assignments and outages, and Level IIIs build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and identify coverage gaps. Difficulty adapts as you progress.

Is it relevant to food processing plants rather than refineries?

Yes. The Oil and Gas Site environment is a process-plant setting, and the equipment it contains, piping, vessels, heat exchangers and tube bundles, is the same kind found in steam, refrigeration and utility systems at food processing plants. IRIS, UT thickness surveys, PMI and LRUT practice all transfer directly to that work.

Can I practise NDT online in California from a rural location?

Yes. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app, so a technician anywhere in the Central Valley can practise without travelling to a lab. Formal certification still requires practical exams on physical specimens arranged through your employer.

Can a contract crew practise for several different plants at once?

Yes. A Level III or crew lead can build separate scenario sets for different site types, such as a process-plant set focused on IRIS and PMI, a tank set focused on shell thickness and floor screening, and a repair-weld set in the Welding Workshop, then assign them to the technicians going to each site. Results give an objective view of readiness before the outage season starts, while real site work remains governed by owner requirements and the employer's written practice.
