NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in California

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. California is a good test of why that matters. Few states ask technicians to switch between such different kinds of inspection. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. You enter a virtual workplace, select your equipment and complete a real inspection job on a realistic asset: a weld coupon, an airframe panel, a heat-exchanger bundle, a storage tank or a pipe spool. Every job is scored when you finish, with feedback on what you found, what you missed and where your technique slipped. It is designed for every level, from a trainee in their first weeks to a Level III benchmarking a whole crew.

California's inspection economy covers several industries at once. There is aerospace and space manufacturing from El Segundo and Hawthorne to Palmdale and Vandenberg. There are naval shipyards and air stations around San Diego Bay and the busiest port complex in the country at Los Angeles and Long Beach. Refineries and renewable fuels plants operate in the Los Angeles Basin and the Bay Area, and Kern County's oil fields remain the heart of the state's production. The state also has seismic steel construction, geothermal plants near the Salton Sea, wind farms in the San Gorgonio Pass and a large agricultural processing sector in the Central Valley. Keeping skills sharp across that range is the problem Practical NDT was built to solve. To see it on your own work, request a California demo.

California's NDT workforce and where the work is

Southern California aerospace and ports. The Los Angeles region has been one of the country's aerospace centres for most of a century. Airframe and component manufacturers, satellite and launch-vehicle builders and their machining, forging and composite suppliers stretch from the South Bay to the Antelope Valley, where Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale builds and maintains military aircraft. That work needs eddy current, ultrasonic, penetrant and magnetic particle inspection, much of it on high-value parts where missing an indication is not an option. The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach add marine terminals, bulk-liquid tank farms, cranes and ship repair. Long Beach also still produces oil from offshore islands and onshore fields.

Refining in transition. The Los Angeles Basin refineries around El Segundo, Torrance, Carson and Wilmington, and the Bay Area refineries around Richmond and Martinez, have long been the core of California's plant-inspection market. That market is changing. A Los Angeles-area refinery closed in late 2025, a Bay Area refinery at Benicia shut down in April 2026, and two Bay Area refineries have converted to renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. The plants that remain, and the renewable fuels units that replaced crude units, still need exchanger inspection, corrosion monitoring, alloy verification and tank surveys. California's refinery process safety rules are some of the strictest in the country.

Central Valley and Kern County. Kern County produces most of California's crude oil from giant fields such as Midway-Sunset and Kern River, where steam injection puts steam generators, high-temperature lines and heavily corroded tubulars at the centre of inspection work. Further north, Fresno, Stockton and Sacramento combine food and agricultural processing, with boilers, pressure vessels and ammonia refrigeration systems, inland port operations at Stockton, rail vehicle manufacturing and water infrastructure.

San Diego and the coast. San Diego Bay hosts naval shipbuilding and ship repair, Naval Base San Diego and Naval Air Station North Island, making it one of the country's biggest concentrations of naval maintenance work. Up the coast, Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County is a major launch site. The Santa Barbara Channel's offshore platforms are in long-running decommissioning, and California's last nuclear plant, Diablo Canyon, sits just north in San Luis Obispo County. Inland, the San Gorgonio Pass wind farms near Palm Springs and the Salton Sea geothermal field add renewable energy work. California-wide, seismic design means structural steel connections get more ultrasonic inspection than in almost any other state.

Los Angeles. LA technicians are among the most likely in the country to work in aerospace. Eddy current on fastener holes, UT on forgings and machined parts, and penetrant on engine and structural parts are everyday work. The city is also where seismic moment-frame connections are routinely ultrasonically tested, so Welding Workshop PAUT and UT practice carries over directly.

Bakersfield. Kern County's oil fields depend on steam generators, steam lines, produced-water systems and tank batteries. Thickness surveys, guided-wave screening on long lines, tube inspection and tank work dominate. Nearby Mojave and Edwards add flight-test and aerospace work.

Long Beach. Long Beach combines port terminals and bulk-liquid tank farms, oil production from the offshore islands and a growing space manufacturing sector. Storage Tank jobs, weld inspection and aerospace practice all apply to the local mix.

San Francisco Bay Area (Richmond/Martinez). The Bay Area's refining corridor along San Pablo Bay and the Carquinez Strait is going through closures and conversions to renewable fuels. That shift brings new-unit fabrication inspection, alloy verification and conventional turnaround work. The Oil & Gas Site environment covers IRIS, PMI, PAUT and TOFD.

San Diego. Naval ship construction and repair on San Diego Bay need large volumes of weld inspection, and the aviation squadrons and depots at North Island need aerospace-style ET and UT. The Welding Workshop and Aircraft Hangar environments match both.

Sacramento. Sacramento's inspection work includes passenger rail vehicle manufacturing, aviation maintenance at the former McClellan base and state water and transport infrastructure such as dams, bridges and pipelines. Weld inspection and fundamentals are the core.

Fresno. The San Joaquin Valley's food and agricultural processors run boilers, pressure vessels, pasteurizers and ammonia refrigeration systems, and naval aviation is nearby at Lemoore. Thickness surveys, surface methods and fundamentals are the key skills.

Stockton. The Port of Stockton is an inland deepwater port with bulk terminals and storage tanks, surrounded by agricultural processing and logistics. Tank inspection and general weld inspection fit the local work.

Santa Barbara. Launch activity at Vandenberg brings aerospace-grade inspection to the county, while offshore platforms in the Channel are being decommissioned. Aircraft Hangar practice and Oil & Gas Site thickness and screening jobs cover both.

Palm Springs. The Coachella Valley's inspection work is mostly in renewable energy. The San Gorgonio Pass wind farms have tower and flange welds, and the Salton Sea geothermal plants have corrosive, scaling brine systems. Weld UT and MT, corrosion mapping and PMI fit well.

Environments and methods that match California work

Practical NDT offers five workplace environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. Here is how they map to California's industries.

Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). This is the most important environment for Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego and Santa Barbara County. Practise eddy current on fastener holes, skins and structures, ultrasonic inspection of components and bonded structures, and penetrant on engine and structural parts. Aerospace inspection rewards discipline in calibration, scanning coverage and indication reporting, which are the habits scored feedback is built to reinforce.

Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT and VT. This covers naval shipyard weld inspection in San Diego, structural steel and seismic connection testing across the state, wind tower welds near Palm Springs, rail manufacturing in Sacramento and new renewable-fuels unit construction in the Bay Area.

Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). A process plant with weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice. Bay Area and LA Basin refinery crews can practise IRIS on exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI alloy verification, PAUT corrosion mapping and TOFD. Kern County crews can practise LRUT guided-wave screening on long surface lines and thickness surveys on steamflood piping. Geothermal technicians can apply corrosion mapping and PMI practice to brine systems.

Storage Tank. Run UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. This fits port tank farms in Long Beach and Los Angeles, Stockton's terminals and oil-field tank batteries in Kern County.

NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration and fundamentals. This is the starting point for trainees and for technicians in the Central Valley's food and agricultural processing plants who handle a wide variety of general inspection.

Regulators and requirements California technicians meet

Radiography. California is an NRC Agreement State. The California Department of Public Health's Radiologic Health Branch licenses radioactive materials and radiation machines. California requires industrial radiographers to hold recognized radiation safety certification, such as a card from an Agreement State that certifies radiographers or the ASNT industrial radiography radiation safety personnel credential, as set out in CDPH rules. Practical NDT's RT scenarios cover set-up and interpretation only. They do not count toward radiation safety training or supervised hours and involve no real sources.

Pressure equipment and refineries. Boilers and pressure vessels are inspected under Cal/OSHA's Pressure Vessel Unit within the Division of Occupational Safety and Health. Refineries operate under California's refinery-specific Process Safety Management rule, which requires damage mechanism reviews and hierarchy-of-hazard-controls analyses. That puts corrosion monitoring and inspection planning under close scrutiny. Refinery inspection programmes are generally built on API 510, 570 and 653, with ASME Section V methods.

Oil fields, pipelines and offshore. The California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) regulates oil and gas wells and associated facilities. The Office of the State Fire Marshal oversees intrastate hazardous-liquid pipelines, the CPUC oversees gas pipeline safety and PHMSA sets the federal rules. The State Lands Commission manages state-water offshore leases, and federal platforms fall under BSEE.

Structural, naval and aerospace. Seismic steel connections are commonly inspected to AWS D1.1 and the seismic supplement AWS D1.8, and public school and essential-facility construction goes through the Division of the State Architect's inspection process. Naval shipyards work to NAVSEA technical publications for NDT, and aerospace manufacturers generally certify personnel to NAS 410.

Personnel certification. Many California service companies and plant owners certify technicians through an employer written practice based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the framework Atlantis training supports. NAS 410, NAVSEA qualification requirements and ASNT central certification are what particular California employers may also require. They are market context, not schemes Atlantis administers. Practical NDT is practice for any of them and certifies no one.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in California

New trainees. California trains new inspectors through community college welding and NDT programmes, military transition, aerospace apprenticeships and on-the-job pathways at service companies. The guided fundamentals path gives trainees a consistent start. It covers how each method works, how to calibrate and how to scan, then moves to scored jobs with realistic defects. Trainees can make their early mistakes on a virtual weld rather than on an aerospace part or a live refinery line.

Working technicians. Because work in California moves between sectors, many technicians go months without using a given technique. A refinery inspector may not have done eddy current in years, and an aerospace inspector may never have seen a tank floor. Practical NDT lets you drill rare defects and less-used techniques before a new assignment, whether that is a turnaround in Martinez, a shipyard availability in San Diego or a seismic retrofit in Los Angeles.

Level IIIs and team leads. For a Level III with technicians spread across aerospace clients, plants and construction sites, Practical NDT offers objective, repeatable benchmarking. You can build scenario sets that reflect your procedures, assign them, see who misses which defect types or leaves coverage gaps, and target refresher work. It supports your written practice and your practical examinations. It does not stand in for them.

Practice vs certification

Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification and not a substitute for any practical examination. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A and the employer written practice built on it, certification requires documented classroom training, documented on-the-job experience and a practical exam on real specimens with real equipment, administered under the employer's Level III. NAS 410 and NAVSEA programmes have their own equivalent requirements. None of these can be satisfied in a simulator. Practical NDT does not award hours or issue certificates, and it does not count toward California radiographer certification.

Its value is readiness. People who have worked through many scored scenarios arrive at the practical exam knowing what real indications look like, how to set up cleanly and how to cover the part. Technicians who refresh before an assignment start faster. Supervisors see more clearly where each person stands. For formal training toward SNT-TC-1A certification, see Atlantis NDT training and certification. Practical NDT complements that path and does not replace it.

Bring Practical NDT to your California team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training. A California demo starts with your sector. The Aircraft Hangar suits aerospace manufacturers and MROs, the Welding Workshop suits shipyards, fabricators and structural inspectors, and the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank suit refinery, renewable fuels, oil-field and terminal crews. Then we look at rollout: trainee logins, refresher sets timed around turnarounds and ship availabilities, and scenario assignment and benchmarking for your Level III.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a virtual NDT training option for technicians across California?

Yes. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app, so technicians in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, San Diego, Bakersfield, the Central Valley or anywhere else in the state can practise 3D inspection jobs across five environments and twelve methods, with scored feedback on every job.

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?

No. SNT-TC-1A, NAS 410 and NAVSEA programmes all require practical exams on real hardware plus documented training and experience. Practical NDT is preparation and practice. It certifies no one and awards no hours.

Is it useful for aerospace inspection in Southern California?

Yes, as practice. The Aircraft Hangar environment has 54 jobs covering eddy current, UT and penetrant on airframe and component inspection. Your employer's NAS 410 or equivalent programme still governs qualification and certification.

Can refinery and renewable fuels crews in the Bay Area use it?

Yes. The Oil & Gas Site covers IRIS, PMI, LRUT, corrosion mapping and weld inspection with UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT, and the Storage Tank environment covers shell UT and MFL floor screening.

Does RT practice count toward California industrial radiographer requirements?

No. California's radiographer requirements involve recognized radiation safety certification, training and supervised experience with real sources. Practical NDT only lets you practise radiographic set-up and interpretation, without any radiation.
