San Francisco Bay Area technicians and employers can get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III NDT training from Atlantis NDT through online classes that are primarily self-paced, or onsite courses at their own refinery, hangar, shop or jobsite anywhere from Richmond and Martinez to Oakland, SFO and Silicon Valley. An ASNT NDT Level III leads each course, and the hours are recorded against the employer's written practice so they count toward certification. Methods: UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation.
The Bay Area's NDT market looks nothing like a typical industrial city. Refining is concentrated along the northern shore of San Pablo Bay and the Carquinez Strait, where Chevron Richmond and the Martinez refinery still process crude while Rodeo and Martinez have neighbours that converted to renewable fuels and Benicia has stopped refining. Around the bay sit airline maintenance at SFO, Travis Air Force Base, NASA Ames and Lockheed Martin Space, ship repair yards, the Port of Oakland, toll bridges and BART, and the strictest seismic building rules in the country, which make structural weld inspection a steady source of work. Silicon Valley's precision and semiconductor-equipment manufacturers add another layer. This page is built around that map. If you already know what you need, request a Bay Area training quote and we reply within one business day.

NDT training in San Francisco: how it works for Bay Area employers and technicians
In the Bay Area, NDT certification under SNT-TC-1A is granted by your employer. You complete classroom training per method and level, build supervised experience, pass general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and pass a vision test. Atlantis NDT delivers the training, Level III oversight and records, online or onsite at your facility.
There are few classroom NDT schools in the Bay Area, and searchers for "NDT training San Francisco" mostly find independent Level III consultants, directory listings and national companies whose nearest classrooms are in Southern California or out of state. Travelling for a week of classroom training is costly here, both in time and in the price of hotels and lost shifts. That is why the Atlantis model, online theory with practical training and exams at the employer's own site, fits the Bay Area especially well.
What matters is that the training is accepted by your employer's Level III. Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer's written practice decides the training hours, experience, exam content and pass marks, and the Level III signs off. A training provider supplies documented hours and preparation; it cannot issue a "licence" every employer must accept. Atlantis records show method, level, topics, contact hours, instructor and exam results, laid out to be filed against your written practice and shown to a refinery owner's or customer's auditor. Employers can also have us write or revise the written practice, act as outside Level III and administer exams.
Two hypothetical Bay Area examples. Suppose a mechanical contractor working turnarounds in Contra Costa County needs four technicians moved from UT Level I to Level II before the next shutdown season: online theory in evening blocks, then onsite practical days on their own piping specimens, then exams under their written practice. Or suppose a testing agency in Oakland needs VT and UT Level II inspectors for steel moment-frame welds on a hospital project: an onsite course focused on AWS D1.1 and D1.8 work, with practical sessions on welded mock-ups.
ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in San Francisco
Atlantis NDT runs SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and II courses in eight methods, plus Level III exam preparation. Bay Area employers most often ask for UT, PAUT and RT for refinery and pipeline work, VT and UT for seismic structural welds, ET and PT for aircraft maintenance, and PT and VT for precision and semiconductor-equipment manufacturing.
| Method | Levels | What Bay Area employers use it for | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) | I, II, III prep | Refinery piping and vessel thickness, structural steel welds on seismic frames, bridge and tank inspection | None for Level I; Level I hours and experience for Level II per written practice |
| Phased Array UT (PAUT) | I, II | Refinery and pipeline welds, corrosion mapping, encoded weld records that replace RT on some jobs | Usually UT Level II first |
| Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) | I, II | Sizing flaws in thick pressure-vessel and heavy structural welds | Usually UT Level II first |
| Radiographic Testing (RT) | I, II | Process piping, pipeline tie-ins, castings and pressure parts; film, CR and DR | Radiation safety training plus California radiographer rules |
| Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) | I, II | Structural steel, bridge members, lifting gear, ship repair | None for Level I |
| Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) | I, II | Aircraft parts, stainless welds, vacuum and process components in precision manufacturing | None for Level I |
| Visual Testing (VT) | I, II | Structural weld inspection, refinery in-service visual checks, fabrication receiving inspection | None for Level I |
| Eddy Current Testing (ET) | I, II | Aircraft structure and engine inspection, heat-exchanger tubing in refineries and power plants | None for Level I |
Course detail: UT Level 1, UT Level 2, PAUT Level 2, TOFD, RT Level 2, MT Level 2, PT Level 1, PT Level 2, VT Level 2, ET Level 1, ET Level 2. Level III candidates: ASNT Level III training. Aerospace-focused technicians can also see aerospace NDT training.
Method spotlight for the Bay Area: UT for seismic structural welds. After the 1994 Northridge earthquake exposed brittle fractures in welded steel moment-frame connections, California's building rules and the AWS D1.8 seismic supplement put much more weight on inspection of demand-critical welds. In San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, special inspection under Chapter 17 of the California Building Code means testing agencies need UT technicians who can scan complete-joint-penetration welds, size indications and report to the engineer of record. Combine that with VT and MT and you have one of the most reliable sources of NDT work in the region, independent of refinery cycles.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in San Francisco, step by step
The path is written practice, formal training, experience, general, specific and practical exams, vision test, employer certification and recertification. Your employer's written practice sets hours, exam content and pass marks; in the Bay Area the codes behind the specific exam vary widely by sector.
- Identify the written practice that covers your method and level. No written practice? See written practice development.
- Complete formal training, online or onsite. Recommended minimums are in the training requirements matrix; your employer may require more.
- Log supervised experience in the method. Refinery turnarounds and construction projects are common ways to build hours.
- Pass the general exam on method principles.
- Pass the specific exam on your employer's procedures and codes, such as ASME Section V, API 1104, AWS D1.1 or D1.8, or aircraft maintenance manuals.
- Pass the practical exam on real specimens under a Level III. This part is never online-only.
- Pass the vision test: near-vision acuity and colour contrast as required.
- Receive employer certification, signed by the Level III and valid while you work for that employer.
- Recertify on the interval in your written practice.
Online or onsite NDT training for Bay Area crews
Atlantis NDT has no training centre in San Francisco. Theory runs online; practical training and exams take place onsite at your Bay Area facility under Level III supervision. That avoids Bay Area travel and lets you schedule around turnarounds and project milestones.
Bay Area traffic and costs make a strong case for bringing training to the crew. Refinery contractors in Richmond, Martinez and Benicia work to turnaround calendars; testing agencies follow construction schedules; airline maintenance runs around the clock. Online theory can be split into shorter blocks, including evenings, so technicians keep working, and onsite practical sessions can be fitted into quieter weeks. Training on your own specimens, equipment and acceptance criteria also makes the specific and practical exams far more relevant.
- Online: primarily self-paced classes with Level III support and enrolment open all year, for individual technicians.
- Onsite: theory and practical at your plant, hangar, shop or jobsite in San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, San Mateo or Santa Clara counties.
- Blended: theory online, followed by a short onsite block for practical training and exams.

Where NDT technicians work in the San Francisco Bay Area
Bay Area NDT work clusters in refining and renewable fuels along San Pablo Bay and the Carquinez Strait, aviation and aerospace (SFO, Travis AFB, NASA Ames, Lockheed Martin Space), seismic structural construction, bridges and transit, ports and ship repair, gas and electric utilities, and precision manufacturing in Silicon Valley.
Refining and renewable fuels: Richmond, Martinez, Rodeo, Benicia
Chevron's Richmond refinery and the Martinez refinery are the region's main crude-oil refineries. Phillips 66 converted its Rodeo refinery to renewable fuels, and the former Marathon refinery in Martinez now produces renewable diesel. Valero ended refining at Benicia in 2026, with the site continuing as a fuel import and storage terminal. Even with fewer crude units, these sites run tanks, piping, heat exchangers and pressure vessels that need UT thickness, PAUT, RT, ET tubing inspection, MT and PT during turnarounds. Atlantis teaches the NDT methods used on this work; API inspector programmes are separate and not part of our training. Nearby city pages: NDT training in Martinez.
Aviation and aerospace
United Airlines runs a large maintenance operation at San Francisco International Airport, Travis Air Force Base near Fairfield hosts airlift and refuelling aircraft, and NASA Ames Research Center and Lockheed Martin Space sit at Moffett Field and Sunnyvale. Aircraft work relies on ET, PT, UT and visual inspection to manufacturer and maintenance manual procedures. Many aerospace employers certify NDT personnel to NAS 410 rather than SNT-TC-1A, so check your employer's requirement before choosing training.
Seismic construction, bridges and transit
High-rise, hospital, school and data-centre construction around the bay requires special inspection of structural steel welds. San Francisco's Department of Building Inspection oversees special inspections in the city, the Division of the State Architect oversees public school projects, and the state's health-facility agency oversees hospitals. Caltrans operates the state-owned toll bridges, including the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, while the Golden Gate Bridge has its own district; BART and Caltrain maintain rail structures. All of this means VT, MT and UT to AWS D1.1, D1.5 and D1.8.
Ports, ship repair and marine terminals
The Port of Oakland is one of the busiest container ports on the West Coast, and ship repair yards operate in Alameda and Vallejo. Hull, crane and terminal-structure inspection uses UT thickness, MT and VT. Work inside secure port and refinery areas typically requires a TWIC card.
Utilities, pipelines and precision manufacturing
PG&E's gas transmission system has been under intense integrity scrutiny since the 2010 San Bruno pipeline explosion, and pipeline welds are inspected to API 1104 with RT and PAUT. Gas-fired power plants in the Delta add boiler and piping work. In Fremont and across Silicon Valley, automotive, semiconductor-equipment and precision manufacturers use PT, VT, ET and UT on welded vacuum, gas and structural components.
Radiography licensing and other California requirements
California is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography is licensed by the California Department of Public Health, Radiologic Health Branch, and radiographers must hold California-recognised radiographer certification and a CDPH-issued identification card before doing industrial radiography in the state.
California's rules (Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations, which incorporates the federal radiography rules in 10 CFR Part 34) are stricter than many states'. Radiographers who are certified in another Agreement State or through ASNT's Industrial Radiography Radiation Safety Personnel programme may be able to obtain a provisional California identification card; otherwise the state's own certification route applies. For a Bay Area RT technician, this means two separate qualifications: the SNT-TC-1A RT Level II certificate from your employer, and California radiation-safety certification and identification. Atlantis RT courses teach the NDT method; radiation-safety qualification follows your employer's licence and CDPH rules. Confirm current requirements with CDPH before starting RT work.
Other authorities: boilers and pressure vessels fall under Cal/OSHA's Pressure Vessel Unit; gas pipelines are regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission and hazardous-liquid pipelines by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, with interstate lines under PHMSA. Refineries also operate under Cal/OSHA's process safety management rules for petroleum refineries. Codes commonly met in the Bay Area: ASME Section V and VIII, ASME B31.3, API 1104, AWS D1.1, D1.5 and D1.8, and the California Building Code.
Local options compared: Bay Area NDT training and Atlantis
The Bay Area has the ASNT Golden Gate Section, independent Level III consultants, and community colleges with welding programmes, but few classroom NDT schools. National training companies teach mainly in Southern California or out of state. Atlantis NDT brings SNT-TC-1A training to you, online or onsite, with Level III support.
| Option | Best for | Format |
|---|---|---|
| ASNT Golden Gate Section | Networking, technical meetings, meeting local NDT employers | Section meetings and events |
| Independent Level III consultants on the Peninsula and East Bay | Small companies needing a Level III or a few certifications | Individual arrangements |
| Bay Area community colleges | Welding and manufacturing fundamentals; check current catalogues for NDT content | Semester-based, on campus |
| National training companies | Technicians able to travel to scheduled classroom courses | Fixed classroom, often outside the Bay Area |
| Atlantis NDT | Employers training crews, and technicians needing specific methods and levels around work | Online or onsite at your facility, Level III-led |
These options can be combined. A welding graduate still needs employer NDT certification; a company with an independent Level III can still use Atlantis for crew training or additional methods.
Level III services and written practices for Bay Area NDT companies
Bay Area testing agencies, refinery contractors and manufacturers can use Atlantis NDT for a written practice, an outside Level III, exam administration and audit preparation, so training becomes certifications that stand up to owners, building officials and customer auditors.
Refinery owners audit contractor NDT qualifications closely, and building departments and state agencies expect special inspectors to show proper certification records. Smaller firms often lack a Level III on staff or rely on a written practice that no longer matches their procedures. Atlantis can write or revise the written practice (written practice development), act as Level III, set and grade exams, and organise the records auditors look for. See SNT-TC-1A training and certification and the employer certification programme.
For Level III consulting in the city, see NDT consulting in San Francisco; for refinery-corridor work, refining NDT consulting in Richmond, NDT consulting in Martinez, Rodeo and Benicia; statewide, NDT consulting in California. To talk it through, book a Level III consultation for your Bay Area company.
Practise before the practical exam
The practical exam is done on real specimens under a Level III, onsite at your employer. Before that, Bay Area trainees can practise 12 method families in twelve workplaces on the Practical NDT 3D simulator. It is practice only and does not replace the practical exam.
Environments include an NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site and storage tank, which line up well with Bay Area refinery, hangar and structural work. Start at Practical NDT for the Bay Area refinery corridor, Practical NDT in California or the main Practical NDT page.
Your instructor
Courses are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He designs course content, reviews written practices and oversees exams so training records hold up to employer, owner and customer audits.
Frequently asked questions about NDT training in San Francisco
How do I get NDT certified in San Francisco?
Work for or be sponsored by an employer with an SNT-TC-1A written practice, complete formal training, log the required experience, pass general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and pass a vision test. Your employer then certifies you. Atlantis provides the training and, for employers, Level III services and exams.
How much does an NDT course cost in the Bay Area?
It depends on methods, levels, number of trainees, online or onsite delivery and the practical specimens required. Atlantis quotes on request; we reply within one business day. Request a San Francisco NDT course quote.
How much does NDT school cost?
College programmes and short certification courses are different products. Colleges publish tuition; short-course pricing depends on scope. In the Bay Area, also count travel and time off work, which onsite or online delivery avoids.
How long is the NDT training course?
Each method and level has recommended training and experience hours, and your employer's written practice may require more. See the training requirements matrix. Online theory can be split into shorter sessions.
Which NDT certification is best?
The one your employer and its customers require. For most US industrial and construction work that is SNT-TC-1A employer certification; many aerospace employers use NAS 410; Level III candidates often add ASNT's own Level III certificate. In California, RT also needs state radiographer certification.
Which NDT course is best to start with in the Bay Area?
VT and UT, because structural special inspection and refinery work both need them. Add MT for steel, ET and PT for aviation, and PAUT after UT Level II.
Can I take NDT training online in California?
Yes, for theory. The practical training and exam need real specimens and a Level III, completed onsite at your employer. See NDT training online.
Do I need a license for radiography in California?
Yes. Your employer needs a CDPH radioactive materials licence, and you need California-recognised radiographer certification and a CDPH identification card. An SNT-TC-1A RT certificate alone is not enough.
Can you train our crew onsite in Richmond, Oakland or San Jose?
Yes. Onsite delivery is how Atlantis trains most crews, with theory and practical at your site, scheduled around turnarounds or project milestones. Plan onsite NDT training in the Bay Area.
Do I need a TWIC card for NDT work in the Bay Area?
For unescorted access to secure areas of the Port of Oakland and many marine and refinery terminals, yes. Your employer or site will tell you; it is separate from NDT certification.
Is SNT-TC-1A certification recognised by Bay Area employers?
SNT-TC-1A is the most widely used basis for employer certification in US industry and construction inspection. Recognition always runs through the employer's written practice, so training records must match it.
Can I use the GI Bill or WIOA for NDT training?
Those programmes generally require an approved school or provider, and Atlantis does not claim those approvals. Check with the programme administrator; many Bay Area technicians are trained through employer-paid programmes.
Where else in California does Atlantis offer NDT training?

Looking for NDT training near you?
Searches like "NDT training near me" and "NDT certification near me" usually mean one of two things: a company that needs a crew qualified without losing them to travel, or an individual looking for the closest route to a certificate. Both are answerable from San Francisco.
For companies, proximity is solved by delivery rather than address — programmes run on-site at your facility, so the training comes to the crew and the practical work uses specimens matching what your people actually examine. For individuals, online enrolment is open all year: theory is primarily self-paced, practice runs in the Practical NDT simulator, and the supervised practical takes place at the employer's facility, so no local classroom is needed.
