NDT training in Mobile: how it works for Mobile employers and technicians
Short answer: Atlantis NDT delivers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III training in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET to employers and technicians in Mobile and along the Alabama and Mississippi Gulf Coast, through self-paced online modules and hands-on practical sessions onsite at your shipyard, hangar, mill or plant. Your employer certifies you under its written practice after training, logged experience, Level III-administered exams and a vision test.
Mobile's NDT work comes from a tight cluster of heavy industries around the bay and the Mobile River: naval and commercial shipbuilding, aircraft assembly and MRO at the Brookley Aeroplex, steel and stainless mills upriver in Calvert, chemical and industrial plants in Theodore, Axis and McIntosh, port and terminal infrastructure, and pipeline and offshore support work across the Gulf. Just west, the shipyard in Pascagoula and the refinery nearby extend the same labour market into Mississippi.
Those employers use NDT in very different ways, which is why the employer-based SNT-TC-1A model matters. A shipyard technician qualifies to the yard's written practice and its naval or class requirements; an aerospace inspector qualifies to the aircraft maker's scheme; a plant technician qualifies to an inspection contractor's written practice. Atlantis NDT does not have a training centre in Mobile. Theory is delivered self-paced online, and practical sessions run onsite at the employer's facility, on its own equipment, under ASNT Level III oversight. ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in Mobile
All courses follow the SNT-TC-1A body of knowledge. Level I prepares technicians to perform calibrations and tests to written instructions under supervision; Level II covers setting up equipment, interpreting and evaluating results against codes and specifications, and reporting; Level III preparation covers the basic, method and specific examinations. Recommended training and experience hours are in SNT-TC-1A and are adopted through your written practice; see the training requirements matrix.
| Method | Levels | What Mobile employers use it for | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| UT (ultrasonic testing) | I, II, III prep | Hull and structural weld inspection in shipyards, plate lamination checks, thickness surveys on plant piping and terminal tanks | Basic maths; Level II requires Level I training and experience |
| PAUT (phased array UT) | II, III prep | Production weld inspection in shipbuilding and heavy fabrication, corrosion mapping on plant piping | UT Level II normally required first |
| TOFD (time-of-flight diffraction) | II, III prep | Thick-section welds on pressure vessels and heavy structures | UT Level II normally required first |
| RT (radiographic testing) | I, II, III prep | Shipyard weld radiography, piping and vessel welds at chemical plants and the refinery, film and digital interpretation | Radiation safety training plus Alabama or Mississippi requirements below |
| MT (magnetic particle testing) | I, II, III prep | Steel hull and structural welds, mill equipment, cranes and lifting gear, offshore and port structures | None beyond employer requirements |
| PT (liquid penetrant testing) | I, II, III prep | Aluminium hull and superstructure welds, stainless products, non-ferrous aircraft parts | None beyond employer requirements |
| VT (visual testing) | I, II, III prep | Weld visual on every shipyard and fabrication weld, coating and fit-up inspection | None beyond employer requirements |
| ET (eddy current testing) | I, II, III prep | Aircraft structure and component inspection at MRO and assembly operations, exchanger tubing at plants | Basic electrical theory helpful |
How the methods map to Gulf Coast work. Aluminium shipbuilding, which Mobile is known for, relies heavily on VT, PT and UT or RT of aluminium welds, because MT does not work on non-ferrous material. Steel shipbuilding and heavy fabrication add MT. Naval work is governed by NAVSEA technical publications, such as the NAVSEA NDT requirements document T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 and MIL-STD-2035 acceptance criteria, which define personnel qualification on top of method knowledge; Atlantis provides SNT-TC-1A-based method training, and yards apply their own naval qualification layer. Aircraft assembly and MRO use ET, PT and UT under manufacturer procedures and schemes such as NAS 410 or EN 4179, which Atlantis does not train to. Chemical plants, the refinery and terminals use UT thickness, PAUT corrosion mapping, RT on repair welds and ET on exchangers.
A common progression is VT and PT, then UT, then RT or PAUT depending on whether you move into shipbuilding production or plant integrity work. The full list is on the NDT training page, and ASNT Level III preparation is available.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in Mobile, step by step
- Confirm your employer's written practice. The written practice turns SNT-TC-1A into binding rules for your company and defines levels, training, experience, exams and recertification. Shipyards and aerospace employers may add scheme-specific requirements.
- Complete formal classroom training. Theory, equipment, codes and interpretation, delivered self-paced online or in an onsite session. Recommended hours are in the training requirements matrix.
- Log on-the-job experience. Supervised hours performing the method, recorded in a format your Level III accepts.
- Pass the general examination. Written questions on method principles, administered under the authority of a Level III.
- Pass the specific examination. Questions on your employer's procedures, equipment and codes, for example AWS D1.1 or D1.2 for structural steel or aluminium, ASME Section V for plant work, or the yard's naval inspection requirements.
- Pass the practical examination. Hands-on testing of specimens with known discontinuities, graded by the Level III.
- Pass the vision tests. Near-vision acuity annually and colour contrast differentiation.
- Receive written certification from your employer for each method and level.
- Recertify at the interval in the written practice; a new employer must certify you under its own written practice.

Self-paced online or onsite NDT training for Mobile crews
Self-paced online theory. Classroom modules are self-paced online, so technicians in Mobile, Daphne, Saraland, Theodore, Pascagoula or Gulfport can study around shift work without crossing the bay. See online NDT training.
Onsite practical at your facility. Practical sessions are run at the employer's shipyard, hangar, mill or plant on its own equipment and specimens, under ASNT Level III oversight. For an aluminium shipbuilder, that means practical training on aluminium weld specimens made to its own procedures.
Scheduling around hurricane season and outages. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and Gulf Coast employers regularly lose days to storm preparation. Onsite sessions in that window are planned with a fallback date, and theory continues online if field sessions move. Chemical plants, the refinery and mills can schedule training ahead of planned outages. Ask about onsite training for your Mobile crew; we reply within one business day.
Corporate programmes. Employers training several technicians across methods can combine theory, practical sessions, exams and written-practice support through corporate NDT training.
Where NDT technicians work in Mobile
Shipbuilding. Austal USA builds aluminium and steel vessels for the US Navy on the Mobile River, and Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, is one of the largest naval shipyards in the country. Smaller yards and repair facilities across the Gulf Coast build and maintain workboats, barges and offshore support vessels. Naval work follows NAVSEA requirements; commercial vessels follow ABS rules. Employers ask for VT, PT, MT and UT, with RT and increasingly PAUT for production weld inspection.
Aerospace assembly and MRO. Airbus assembles A320-family and A220 aircraft at its Mobile final assembly lines at the Brookley Aeroplex, and the site also hosts large aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul operations. Aerospace NDT relies on ET, PT and UT under manufacturer procedures and aerospace qualification schemes. SNT-TC-1A method training is a solid foundation, but those employers set their own scheme requirements.
Steel and stainless mills. The integrated steel and stainless complex in Calvert, north of Mobile, and associated metals businesses use UT on plate and coil products, and MT, PT and UT for maintenance of cranes, rolls and heavy equipment.
Chemical plants, refining and terminals. The Mobile River corridor and the Theodore industrial area host chemical and industrial plants, and the Chevron Pascagoula refinery sits just across the state line. Owner inspection programmes are built on API inspection codes, with ASME Section V governing NDT and ASME B31.3 and Section VIII for piping and vessels. Contractors need UT, PAUT, RT, MT, PT and ET technicians, particularly during turnarounds. Atlantis does not train API inspectors, but SNT-TC-1A method training is the NDT foundation for that work.
Port, offshore and pipelines. The Port of Mobile's terminals, the offshore fabrication and supply base along the coast, and Gulf pipelines draw on UT thickness, MT on structures and lifting gear, and RT or PAUT on pipeline welds to API 1104.
Radiography licensing in Alabama and Mississippi. Alabama and Mississippi are both NRC Agreement States. In Alabama, the Alabama Department of Public Health, Office of Radiation Control, licenses radioactive material including industrial radiography sources. In Mississippi, the State Department of Health, Division of Radiological Health, does the same. Radiographers must meet state radiation-safety training and certification requirements, and field radiography at temporary job sites requires at least two qualified individuals. Technicians who cross the state line between Mobile and Pascagoula should confirm that their employer is licensed, or has reciprocity, in the state where the work is done. These rules are separate from SNT-TC-1A method certification.
Level III services and written practices for Mobile NDT companies
Gulf Coast inspection companies often support shipyards, plants and pipeline clients at the same time, and each client audits against different expectations. Atlantis supports Mobile employers with:
- Written practice development and revision. See written practice development.
- Outside Level III services: exam preparation and administration, grading, and records.
- Procedures and technique sheets for UT, PAUT, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, referencing AWS, ASME and client specifications. Where naval or aerospace schemes apply, we will tell you plainly what SNT-TC-1A support covers and what it does not.
- Audit readiness checks on certifications, experience logs and vision tests.
- SNT-TC-1A guidance for owners and managers. See SNT-TC-1A training and certification.

Practise before the practical exam
The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees practise 12 method families in twelve workplaces, including an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. The welding workshop fits shipyard and fabrication technicians, the aircraft hangar fits Brookley aerospace work, and the oil and gas and storage tank environments fit plant and terminal work.
It is practice only. It helps you rehearse set-ups and interpretation, but it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens and is not on-the-job experience.
Your instructor
Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who oversees course content, examinations and Level III services, and supervises onsite practical delivery.
Frequently asked questions about NDT training in Mobile
How do I get NDT certified in Mobile?
