UT is the foundation for a refinery-corridor career. Refineries and chemical plants keep large numbers of thickness monitoring locations, and each circuit has to be read, recorded and trended at set intervals. Level I teaches physics, straight-beam thickness measurement and calibration. Level II adds angle-beam weld examination, evaluation to code acceptance criteria and responsibility for the report.
PAUT and TOFD are where the turnaround market is tightest. Owners increasingly accept encoded ultrasonic examination in place of radiography, because it keeps units open to other crafts while the examination runs. That creates steady demand for qualified PAUT and TOFD technicians. Both courses assume UT Level II. They cover focal laws, scan plans, encoded scanning, data analysis and sizing, the areas where new analysts most often need help.
RT training covers exposure technique, film and digital imaging, image quality indicators and interpretation. In Texas, industrial radiographers must also hold a radiographer certification recognised by the Texas Department of State Health Services. That involves separate radiation-safety coursework and supervised on-the-job training as a trainee. The NDT course does not cover it and does not substitute for it.

- Pass the annual vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast, as defined in the written practice.

Where NDT technicians work in Texas City
Refining. Texas City has two large refineries, the Marathon Galveston Bay refinery (formerly BP's Texas City refinery) and Valero's Texas City refinery. Crude units, cokers, hydrotreaters, reformers, FCC units, sulfur recovery and the utilities that support them all run on inspection programmes built around API 510 for pressure vessels, API 570 for piping and API 653 for tanks, with NDT performed to ASME Section V. Pipelines. Product and crude pipelines connect Texas City to the Houston Ship Channel complex and beyond. New construction and repair welding generally follow API 1104, with RT and increasingly AUT used for girth welds.
