NDT Training and Certification in Florida

Short answer: Florida technicians and employers get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT training from Atlantis NDT through live online classes, live-virtual sessions, or onsite delivery at their own hangar, shipyard, plant or fabrication shop. Courses cover Level I and II in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation, all led by an ASNT NDT Level III. Your employer certifies you under its written practice, and we help build that written practice.

Florida's NDT market looks nothing like the Gulf Coast refining states. Florida has no oil refineries; instead, NDT demand comes from aerospace and space launch, aircraft maintenance and overhaul, naval and commercial shipyards, nuclear and gas-fired power generation, phosphate and fertilizer chemical plants, pulp and paper mills, ports and fuel terminals, natural gas pipelines and an enormous bridge and construction programme. That makes Florida one of the most PT-, ET- and UT-heavy states, with strong aerospace quality expectations and a growing need for PAUT in power and pipeline work. This page shows how training and certification work for Florida employers, what Florida regulators require, and where the work is by region and city. Where NDT technicians work in Florida

Direct answer: Florida NDT work clusters on the Space Coast (launch, satellites, avionics), in South Florida (aircraft MRO, cargo, nuclear power), around Jacksonville (naval aviation, ship repair, port, paper), in Tampa Bay (power, phosphate, ship repair, port), in Orlando (defence and simulation manufacturing) and across the Panhandle (air bases, naval aviation training and shipbuilding).

The Space Coast: Cape Canaveral, Titusville and Melbourne, Florida

Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station host commercial and government launch providers, rocket and spacecraft processing, and a supply chain of precision fabricators and test labs. Launch vehicle structures, pressure vessels, propellant lines and ground-support equipment rely on PT, UT, RT, ET and VT, often under strict aerospace quality systems. Further south, Melbourne and Palm Bay host avionics, defence electronics and business-jet assembly, adding aerospace NDT demand. Port Canaveral adds marine and cruise-ship work.

South Florida: Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Treasure Coast

Miami International Airport is one of the largest cargo and international passenger gateways in the country, and the area around it holds a dense cluster of FAA-certificated repair stations overhauling engines, landing gear, components and airframes. Those shops depend on ET, PT, MT and UT technicians under written practices that satisfy airline customers and repair station quality manuals. South Florida also has two nuclear stations, Turkey Point near Homestead and St. Lucie on Hutchinson Island, where refuelling outages bring ASME Section XI in-service inspection. Port Everglades and PortMiami add fuel terminal and marine work. Further north, the Jupiter and West Palm Beach area is home to jet-engine and helicopter development and test facilities.

Northeast Florida: Jacksonville

Jacksonville combines Naval Air Station Jacksonville, home of a major Navy fleet readiness and aircraft overhaul centre, with Naval Station Mayport, commercial and naval ship repair yards on the St. Johns River, JAXPORT terminals, pulp and paper mills in the region and power generation. Ship repair brings UT, MT, VT and RT under NAVSEA and ABS requirements; naval aviation brings ET, PT and UT under military maintenance standards; mills bring boiler and pressure vessel inspection.

Tampa Bay and central-west Florida

Tampa Bay has large coal- and gas-fired power stations, Port Tampa Bay's fuel and bulk terminals, ship repair yards, and the phosphate mining and fertilizer industry of Polk and Hillsborough counties, whose chemical plants operate sulfuric acid plants, pressure vessels, tanks and process piping that need UT thickness, PAUT, VT and PT/MT on repairs. MacDill Air Force Base adds aircraft maintenance work. The region also has a large construction and bridge programme.

Central Florida: Orlando

Orlando is a centre for defence manufacturing, missiles and fire control systems, and training and simulation. Manufacturers and suppliers use PT, MT, UT and ET on machined and welded components, while theme-park ride engineering and large construction projects add structural weld inspection to AWS D1.1.

The Panhandle: Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach and Panama City

Northwest Florida is dominated by military aviation: Naval Air Station Pensacola, Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field and Tyndall Air Force Base, plus commercial aircraft MRO at Pensacola's airport. Panama City has shipbuilding for government and commercial vessels. Aircraft and ship work bring ET, PT, UT, MT, RT and VT demand under military and classification-society standards.

Pipelines, power and infrastructure statewide

Florida imports most of its natural gas through interstate transmission pipelines from the north, and laterals feed gas-fired power plants around the state. New construction and integrity work follow API 1104 and ASME B31.8. Florida's utilities run a large fleet of combined-cycle plants with HRSGs, steam piping and condensers that need UT, PAUT, ET and VT during outages. The Florida Department of Transportation's bridge programme and Florida's coastal environment drive steel bridge fabrication inspection and corrosion monitoring.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Florida employers

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and Level II courses in eight methods, plus Level III exam preparation. The table shows each method, the levels available, how Florida employers use it and prerequisites. Your employer's written practice sets exact hours and experience.

Electromagnetic Testing (ET)I, II, III prepAircraft structure and engine component inspection, condenser and heat exchanger tubing, steam generator tubing at nuclear stationsPer employer

Florida aerospace and MRO employers often start technicians in PT and MT, then add ET and UT. Shipyards start welding inspectors in VT, then MT and UT. Power plant contractors focus on UT, PAUT and ET. Many aerospace customers reference NAS 410 in addition to SNT-TC-1A; we train to SNT-TC-1A and help your written practice document any extra requirements. For Level III candidates, see ASNT Level III training and exam preparation.

NDT training by city in Florida

Miami. Miami's MRO cluster makes it Florida's busiest aerospace NDT city. Repair stations need ET, PT, MT and UT technicians and must keep certification records tidy for airline audits. Many shops hire experienced technicians and need help maintaining written practices and exam records. See the Miami NDT training page.

Jacksonville. Naval aviation overhaul and ship repair make Jacksonville a mixed aerospace and marine market. Ship repair contractors need VT, MT, UT and RT inspectors familiar with NAVSEA or ABS requirements; aviation suppliers need ET and PT. See the Jacksonville NDT training page.

Tampa. Tampa's power stations, phosphate chemical plants and port terminals give it the most process-industry NDT work in Florida: UT thickness surveys, PAUT and RT of piping, VT of tanks and vessels, and ET of heat exchangers. See the Tampa NDT training page.

Orlando. Orlando is a manufacturing and engineering hub between the Space Coast and Tampa, with defence and simulation employers and fast-growing construction. Manufacturers need PT, MT and UT; construction inspection firms need VT and UT on structural welds. See the Orlando NDT training page.

Pensacola and the Panhandle. Military aviation and aircraft MRO drive ET, PT and UT demand, and shipbuilding in Panama City adds structural weld inspection. Contractors often need technicians who can move between military and commercial standards.

The Space Coast. Launch and spacecraft suppliers need technicians who can work to strict aerospace procedures on pressure vessels, tanks, welded structures and composite parts. Space Coast employers are typically served through the Orlando page and onsite delivery.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Florida, step by step

Direct answer: NDT certification in Florida is employer-based under ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Your employer's written practice sets the rules; you complete classroom training and documented experience, pass general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, pass a vision test, and your employer certifies you. Radiography adds Florida radiation safety requirements.

  1. Employer written practice. Your employer adopts a written practice based on SNT-TC-1A. If it does not have one, we write it with you: written practice development.
  2. Classroom training. Level I, then Level II, live online or onsite. Hours follow your written practice; the training requirements matrix lists SNT-TC-1A recommended hours.
  3. On-the-job experience. Documented, supervised hours in the method at your Florida workplace.
  4. General exam on method principles.
  5. Specific exam on your procedures, codes and equipment, for example ASME Section V, AWS D1.1, API 1104, or the employer's aerospace and marine procedures.
  6. Practical exam on flawed specimens, graded by a Level III.
  7. Vision exam for near-vision acuity and colour contrast.
  8. Employer certification based on documented training, experience and exams.
  9. Recertification at the interval in your written practice, with current vision tests.

Radiography licensing and other Florida requirements

Direct answer: Florida is an NRC Agreement State and was one of the earliest, in 1964. The Florida Department of Health's Bureau of Radiation Control licenses radioactive materials, including industrial radiography sources, and registers radiation machines. Boilers fall under the Division of State Fire Marshal's Boiler Safety Program; intrastate gas pipeline safety under the Florida Public Service Commission.

Industrial radiography

Because Florida is an Agreement State, companies performing industrial radiography with radioactive sources hold a Florida radioactive materials licence rather than an NRC licence, and industrial X-ray equipment is registered with the state. Florida's industrial radiography rules follow the federal model in 10 CFR Part 34: radiation safety training, a radiation safety exam, a supervised period as a radiographer's assistant, recognised radiographer certification, personnel dosimetry and survey instruments, and strict source security. Out-of-state licensees working in Florida use reciprocity. Atlantis RT method training under SNT-TC-1A covers technique, exposure and film and digital interpretation; it is separate from, and does not replace, the radiation safety training and radiographer certification required by Florida rules. Confirm current requirements with the Bureau of Radiation Control before mobilising a crew.

Boilers and pressure vessels

Florida's Boiler Safety Act (Chapter 554, Florida Statutes) is administered by the Department of Financial Services, Division of State Fire Marshal, Bureau of Fire Prevention, through its Boiler Safety Program. Florida's programme focuses on boilers in public assembly locations and applies ASME and National Board rules. Repair and alteration work on boilers and pressure vessels requires NDT to ASME Section V by personnel certified under the repair organisation's programme.

Pipelines

Interstate natural gas pipelines are regulated by PHMSA. The Florida Public Service Commission enforces pipeline safety rules for intrastate gas systems. Pipeline welding inspection follows API 1104 and ASME B31.8.

Aerospace, marine and nuclear

FAA repair stations, military depots and launch providers set their own NDT personnel requirements, often referencing NAS 410 or military standards in addition to SNT-TC-1A. Shipyards work to NAVSEA technical publications for naval work and ABS rules for commercial vessels. Turkey Point and St. Lucie are NRC-licensed, with in-service inspection to ASME Section XI. Atlantis provides SNT-TC-1A method training as the foundation; additional programme-specific qualifications are managed by the employer.

Codes Florida employers commonly use

Some Florida employers also ask for CWI or API credentials; those are separate schemes that Atlantis does not train.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Florida

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT has no training centre in Florida. Classroom training is delivered live online or live-virtual, and practical training and exams are delivered onsite at your facility, on your equipment and specimens, under ASNT Level III oversight.

Individual technicians join online NDT training for Level I and Level II classroom hours: live sessions with a Level III instructor covering principles, equipment, technique, codes and interpretation. Practical training and exams then happen with your employer.

Employers training a group typically choose onsite delivery. We bring classroom and practical sessions to your hangar, shipyard, plant or shop and build the course around your procedures and parts. A Miami repair station trains ET and PT on its own components; a Jacksonville ship repair contractor trains VT and MT on hull and deck welds; a Tampa chemical plant trains UT thickness and PAUT on its own piping.

Florida scheduling has its own rhythm: hurricane season from June through November can disrupt plans, power plant outages are usually scheduled in spring and fall to avoid peak summer demand, and launch and aircraft overhaul schedules drive aerospace availability. We plan cohorts around those windows and can shift sessions to live online when weather intervenes. Multi-site programmes run through corporate NDT training. Ask about onsite training for your Florida crew.

For Florida employers: written practice and Level III services

Direct answer: every Florida employer certifying NDT personnel under SNT-TC-1A needs a written practice and Level III oversight. Atlantis NDT writes and revises written practices, reviews procedures, administers exams and provides Level III services for companies without an in-house Level III.

Florida has many small and mid-sized repair stations, machine shops, fabricators and marine contractors that employ certified technicians but not a Level III. Customer audits by airlines, primes, shipyards and utilities often find gaps: undocumented training hours, practical exams without graded checklists, expired vision tests, or written practices that do not reflect actual work.

Practise before your practical exam

Direct answer: the Practical NDT simulator lets Florida trainees practise 12 NDT methods in five 3D environments before their practical exam. It builds familiarity with technique and indications, but it is practice only and does not replace a practical exam on real specimens.

The Practical NDT simulator includes an NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site and storage tank. The aircraft hangar fits Florida particularly well, from Miami MRO to Jacksonville and Pensacola naval aviation; the welding workshop maps to shipyards and fabrication; the storage tank to port terminals and phosphate plants. See the Practical NDT in Florida page and city pages for Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando and Pensacola. For written-exam practice, use UT Level 2 practice questions.

Your instructor

Direct answer: Florida programmes are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT.

Anoop designs the courses, leads instruction and oversees exams and records so certification holds up under SNT-TC-1A and customer audits. He ties method theory to the parts, codes and procedures your Florida team uses. Ask about scheduling a Florida programme.
