SNT-TC-1A certification path in South Dakota, step by step

These steps follow ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Your employer's written practice sets the exact requirements and can exceed the recommended minimums. The recommended classroom and experience hours by method and level are listed in our training requirements matrix.

1. Establish or confirm the written practice. In South Dakota this is often the step that is missing. If your employer has no written practice, it needs one before anyone can be certified under SNT-TC-1A.
2. Complete formal classroom training. Take the method course for your target level, live online with Atlantis, and keep the records: outline, hours, dates, instructor.
3. Log on-the-job experience. Work in the method under certified supervision and record dates, techniques, items examined and hours. In a small company, make sure a certified person signs off the log; unverifiable hours cause problems at audit.
4. General examination. A written test on method principles under the authority of a Level III.
5. Specific examination. A written test covering your employer's equipment, procedures, codes and acceptance criteria.
6. Practical examination. A hands-on demonstration on real specimens, administered under the written practice, which for South Dakota employers is typically run at their own facility.
7. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour-contrast differentiation as required by the written practice, with near vision re-tested at least annually.
8. Employer certification. The employer certifies you in writing for the method and level. The certification is valid with that employer.
9. Maintain and recertify. Keep vision current, maintain continuity of work in the method and recertify at the written practice interval. A new employer will certify you under its own written practice, and may credit your documented training and experience.

Online, live-virtual or onsite NDT training for South Dakota crews

Live online classroom. Theory is taught in real time by an instructor, with questions, worked examples and assessments, rather than as a self-paced video course. Planning around the South Dakota calendar. Three things shape scheduling here. Ethanol and food-processing plants run planned maintenance shutdowns, and inspection capacity is tight during them. Construction, pipeline and wind work is concentrated in the warmer months, when field crews have the least time for training. Winter weather can make travel across the state unreliable. Where NDT technicians work in South Dakota

South Dakota does not have refineries, shipyards or nuclear plants, and a technician planning a career should know that. What it does have is a steady, broad base of welded-steel industries and a handful of large projects that pull inspection work into the state.

Ethanol and biofuels. South Dakota is a major ethanol-producing state, and Sioux Falls is home to one of the largest ethanol producers in the country. Ethanol plants run fermenters, distillation columns, storage tanks, boilers and extensive process piping. Pressure vessels are typically built to ASME Section VIII, process piping to ASME B31.3, and field-erected storage tanks to API 650, so UT thickness surveys, weld examination, PT on stainless and VT are regular needs. New carbon-capture and pipeline projects around the ethanol industry have been proposed across the region, and would add pipeline-style inspection demand if built.

Pipelines. Major crude-oil pipelines, including the Keystone system and the Dakota Access Pipeline, cross South Dakota, alongside natural-gas transmission and distribution networks. Pipeline construction and repair welding commonly follows API 1104, with RT, UT, PAUT and VT used on girth welds and MT and UT on in-service integrity digs.

Defence construction at Ellsworth. Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City has been chosen to host the B-21 Raider, and the associated construction programme involves large steel structures, hangars and utility systems. Structural steel welding on such projects is usually done to AWS D1.1, bringing VT, MT and UT work for fabrication and construction-inspection contractors.

Power, dams and wind. The Missouri River mainstem dams operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, including Oahe near Pierre, Big Bend, Fort Randall and Gavins Point, involve penstocks, gates, cranes and turbine components that need periodic UT, MT and VT. The Big Stone coal plant in the northeast of the state, gas plants and a growing number of wind farms add boiler, piping, tower-flange and bolt inspection.

Mining. Gold mining continues in the northern Black Hills, and mining operations need MT and UT on haul-truck frames, crushers, conveyors and lifting equipment, plus inspection of process tanks and piping. Mine sites also impose MSHA safety training on visiting inspectors.

Manufacturing and agriculture. Trailer, agricultural-equipment, grain-handling and structural fabricators across eastern South Dakota weld to AWS D1.1 and customer standards and increasingly need certified VT, MT and UT inspectors in-house. Food-processing plants use stainless piping and pressure equipment. Bridges on the state highway system follow AWS D1.5 for steel welding.

Radiography licensing in South Dakota. South Dakota is not an NRC Agreement State, so the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission directly licenses the possession and use of radioactive sources for industrial radiography in the state, under 10 CFR Part 34. Companies licensed in an Agreement State that bring gamma sources into South Dakota for temporary jobs generally have to file for reciprocity with the NRC before working. Radiographers must hold the radiation-safety certification that Part 34 requires, commonly through ASNT's IRRSP programme or an equivalent recognised certifying body. Electronic X-ray equipment is not covered by NRC materials licensing, so check state requirements for X-ray units. Level III services and written practices for South Dakota NDT companies

Practise before the practical exam

In a rural state, trainees often have limited equipment time outside their normal jobs. Do I need a license for radiography in South Dakota?
