NDT Training and Certification in Mississippi
Short answer: Mississippi technicians and employers get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III training from Atlantis NDT in three ways: live online classes, live-virtual cohorts, or onsite sessions at your own shipyard, refinery, plant or pipeline spread. An ASNT NDT Level III leads and oversees the training. Certification is employer-based. Your written practice sets training, experience and exam rules, and a Level III administers the exams. Atlantis has no Mississippi training centre. We teach online or come to your facility.
Mississippi has a small population but a concentrated, demanding NDT market. The Gulf Coast has the state's largest manufacturing employer, a Navy shipyard building destroyers and amphibious ships, next to the state's largest refinery, an LNG terminal and a cluster of commercial shipyards. Inland there is a nuclear power station on the Mississippi River, a NASA rocket-engine test centre, three military flight-training bases, auto plants at Canton and Blue Springs, a steel-and-aerospace cluster around Columbus, and oil, gas and pipeline work across the south and east. Each sector has its own codes and its own idea of a qualified technician. This page explains where Mississippi NDT work is, what each sector expects, which state agencies regulate radiography, boilers and pipelines, and how to request a Mississippi NDT training quote for your crew.
Where NDT technicians work in Mississippi
Direct answer: Mississippi NDT work clusters on the Gulf Coast (naval and commercial shipbuilding, refining, LNG, power, ports), in the Jackson metro and along the Mississippi River (automotive, refining, nuclear power), at Stennis and the coastal military bases (rocket testing, aircraft), in the Golden Triangle around Columbus (steel, aerospace), in Northeast Mississippi (automotive, furniture, fabrication) and across the Pine Belt and oilfields (oil, gas and pipelines).
The Gulf Coast: Pascagoula, Moss Point, Gulfport and Biloxi
Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, part of HII, builds destroyers, amphibious assault ships and amphibious transport docks for the Navy, and has built national security cutters for the Coast Guard. It is Mississippi's largest manufacturing employer. Shipbuilding at that scale means constant weld inspection: visual testing, magnetic particle, penetrant, ultrasonic and radiographic testing of hull, deck, piping and machinery welds, much of it to naval technical publications. Commercial yards such as VT Halter Marine build and repair vessels in the same area. Next door, Chevron's Pascagoula refinery is the largest in the state and generates major turnaround and in-service inspection work. Gulf LNG's import terminal, Mississippi Power's Plant Daniel near Escatawpa, the Port of Gulfport and the Port of Pascagoula add tank, piping, power-plant and structural inspection. Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi and the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport add aircraft and equipment maintenance.
Stennis and Hancock County
NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center in Hancock County is the United States' largest rocket-engine test site. Test stands, high-pressure propellant and gas systems, cryogenic piping and the engine hardware tested there need pressure-system, weld and component inspection, and aerospace contractors at the site bring their own aerospace inspection requirements.
Jackson, Canton and the Mississippi River
Nissan's Canton assembly plant and its suppliers need production NDT on welded bodies, frames and components. Ergon's refinery in Vicksburg brings refinery turnaround work. Entergy's Grand Gulf Nuclear Station near Port Gibson, a single-unit plant and one of the largest boiling-water reactors in the country, brings ASME Section XI in-service inspection during refuelling outages. Jackson itself is the base for many of the state's fabrication shops, inspection contractors and engineering firms.
The Golden Triangle: Columbus, Starkville and West Point
Steel Dynamics operates a flat-rolled steel mill near Columbus, and Airbus Helicopters and Aurora Flight Sciences build aircraft there. Columbus Air Force Base trains Air Force pilots. Mill work needs UT of plate and coils, MT of rolls and shafts, and inspection of cranes and structures. Aerospace work needs penetrant, eddy current and ultrasonic inspection of metallic and composite structures to aerospace specifications.
Northeast Mississippi: Tupelo, Blue Springs and Corinth
Toyota's Blue Springs plant, upholstered-furniture manufacturing around Tupelo, and metal fabricators and tank builders across the northeast need production and weld inspection. Naval Air Station Meridian, to the south-east, adds aircraft-maintenance work.
The Pine Belt and oilfields: Hattiesburg, Laurel and Natchez
Oil and gas production in south and south-west Mississippi, gas storage and gathering systems, and interstate gas and liquids pipelines crossing the state need API 1104 weld radiography and phased array, UT thickness surveys and visual inspection. Laurel has oilfield-equipment and fabrication shops, and Natchez has river industry and gas facilities.
Wherever your company is, you can ask about onsite training for your Mississippi crew. We schedule around production, ship deliveries, outages and turnarounds.
ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Mississippi employers
Direct answer: Atlantis NDT teaches UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET at Level I and Level II, plus Level III exam preparation. Every course is structured on ASNT SNT-TC-1A and on your company's written practice. The table maps each method to Mississippi work.

Shipyard work on Navy contracts often carries qualification requirements beyond SNT-TC-1A, set by the Navy or the prime contractor. Our training teaches the method and supports your SNT-TC-1A written practice. Your Level III maps it to any additional naval requirements. Level III candidates usually prepare for the ASNT Basic examination plus a method examination, often UT or RT on the coast and UT or MT inland. See ASNT Level III training. UT Level II candidates can check themselves with the UT Level 2 practice questions.

Pascagoula. The shipyard sets the tone for the whole coast. Technicians need strong weld-inspection skills across VT, MT, PT, UT and RT and must understand how naval specifications define acceptance. Refinery and LNG work next door adds UT thickness, PAUT and RT during turnarounds. See the Pascagoula training page and maritime NDT training in Pascagoula.
Jackson. The capital is where many inspection contractors, fabricators and engineering firms are based, and where crews mobilise to plants and pipelines across the state. Nissan's Canton plant and its suppliers add production inspection. See the Jackson training page and Practical NDT Jackson.
Gulfport and Biloxi. Port terminals, marine fabrication, coastal construction and military maintenance call for structural weld inspection and aircraft-maintenance NDT. See Practical NDT Gulfport and Practical NDT Biloxi.
Vicksburg and Port Gibson. Refinery turnarounds and nuclear outages bring large contract crews at fixed times of the year. Online theory beforehand lets contract technicians prepare without losing work.
Columbus, Tupelo and Hattiesburg. Mill, aerospace, automotive and pipeline work each has its own training profile: mill inspectors need UT and MT, aerospace inspectors need PT, ET and composite UT, auto inspectors need production methods, and pipeline crews need RT, PAUT and VT to API 1104. All are served online and onsite.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in Mississippi, step by step
Direct answer: Mississippi does not license NDT technicians in general. Under SNT-TC-1A your employer certifies you based on its written practice. The practice sets training hours, experience, exams and vision tests, a Level III administers the exams, and the employer issues the certification once you meet every requirement.
- Your employer adopts a written practice. It defines methods, levels, training and experience hours, exam content, passing grades, vision tests and recertification. If your company needs one, see written practice development.
- You complete formal training. Classroom hours per method and level come from the practice, using SNT-TC-1A recommendations. See the training requirements matrix for the guideline figures.
- You build documented experience. On-the-job hours in the method, under qualified supervision, on ship welds, plant piping, pipeline welds or production parts, depending on your work.
- You pass the general, specific and practical exams. The general exam covers theory, the specific exam covers your employer's procedures, codes and equipment, and the practical exam is done on real specimens. A Level III prepares and administers them.
- You pass the vision examination. Near-vision acuity is checked annually, and colour contrast as the practice requires.
- Your employer certifies you. Certification belongs to that employer. If you move from a Pascagoula yard to a Jackson inspection contractor, the new employer decides how to recertify you.
- You recertify on schedule. The practice sets the interval and the evidence required.
The ASNT NDT Level III certificate is different. ASNT issues it centrally by examination, and employers then certify their Level III under their own practice. See SNT-TC-1A training and certification.
Radiography licensing and other Mississippi requirements
Direct answer: Mississippi is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography with radioactive sources is licensed by the Mississippi State Department of Health's Division of Radiological Health. Work on federal installations, such as military bases, may fall under federal jurisdiction instead, so confirm the licensing route before mobilising.
For a Mississippi radiography company, the state licence sets radiation-safety training, radiographer and assistant qualification, personnel monitoring, survey instruments, source storage and transport, and field-crew rules, which follow the model of 10 CFR Part 34. The state health department also registers X-ray equipment. Radiation-safety training is separate from SNT-TC-1A RT method training, which teaches exposure technique, film and digital processing and interpretation. A field radiographer needs both. Pipeline spreads and refinery turnarounds often bring crews and sources in from neighbouring states, and reciprocity rules apply to out-of-state licensees. Check current requirements with the Division before a crew starts work.
Boilers and pressure vessels. Mississippi's Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Division is also part of the Mississippi State Department of Health, under the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act. State and authorised inspectors inspect boilers and pressure vessels to ASME construction rules and National Board inspection rules. ASME Section V NDT methods, with Section I and Section VIII acceptance criteria, therefore apply in shop and field work, and repair organisations work to National Board requirements.
Pipelines. The Mississippi Public Service Commission oversees intrastate gas pipeline safety, and PHMSA regulates interstate gas and hazardous-liquid lines. Pipeline welding and NDT generally follow API 1104, and operators run their own operator-qualification programmes on top of SNT-TC-1A certification.
Codes and specifications common in Mississippi. Naval technical publications and Navy fabrication and inspection standards in shipbuilding. ABS rules for commercial vessels. ASME Section V, VIII and B31.3 in refining and LNG. ASME Section XI at Grand Gulf. AWS D1.1 for structural steel and AASHTO/AWS D1.5 for bridges. API 1104 for pipelines. Aerospace customer specifications and NAS 410 in the Columbus aerospace cluster and at Stennis, mentioned as context only, because Atlantis trains to SNT-TC-1A.
Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Mississippi
Direct answer: Mississippi crews can take theory online, join a live-virtual cohort with a Level III instructor, or bring the training onsite to their yard, plant or site. Practical exams always use real specimens under Level III oversight. Video and simulation never replace them.
Training works best when it follows Mississippi's work rhythm. Shipyards run to construction milestones and ship deliveries, so short onsite sessions between milestones work better than week-long absences. Refinery and LNG turnarounds on the coast and at Vicksburg pull in contract technicians, who are least available during them, so theory goes in the months before. Grand Gulf refuels on a fixed cycle, and outage technicians are booked well ahead. Hurricane season on the coast runs from June to November and can disrupt schedules at short notice, so coastal employers often prefer live-virtual theory that can be rescheduled. Pipeline crews in the Pine Belt often train in wetter months when spreads slow down. Technicians in the Delta and the northeast benefit most from online theory, because a classroom week on the coast means long drives.
Onsite delivery means the instructor works at your Mississippi facility, with your equipment and procedures and, where possible, your own welds and parts as practice specimens. The specific exam can then reflect your real work. It suits companies with several technicians in a method, or companies that want training tied tightly to their written practice. Live online theory suits mixed groups and individuals. See online NDT training and corporate NDT training. When you're ready, request a cohort or onsite quote for Mississippi. Cohort and onsite quotes come back within one business day.
For Mississippi employers: written practice and Level III services
Direct answer: A Mississippi company that certifies its own NDT personnel needs a compliant written practice, a responsible Level III, and training, experience and exam records that survive an audit. Atlantis NDT writes and reviews written practices, provides Level III services, and runs corporate training for Mississippi employers.
Shipyard subcontractors, fabrication shops, inspection contractors and manufacturers in Mississippi often have a few certified technicians and no in-house Level III. Prime-contractor audits, operator audits and customer source inspections are where the gaps show: training records that don't match the practice, exams not given by a qualified Level III, expired vision tests, or a practice that doesn't cover a method the company now uses. We help close those gaps with:
- Written practice development and review to SNT-TC-1A, mapped to your customers' requirements.
- Level III services: procedure and technique review, exam preparation and administration, and audit support. See NDT consulting in Mississippi.
- Corporate training programmes for multi-site employers, so coastal and inland crews train to one standard.
- Guidance on SNT-TC-1A certification for companies writing their first practice.
If an audit is coming, book a Level III consultation. We start by reviewing your current documents.
Practise before your practical exam
Direct answer: The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets Mississippi trainees practise 12 NDT methods in 5 virtual environments before their hands-on exam. It builds familiarity with set-up and technique, but it is practice only. It does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.
The environments are an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. For Mississippi users, the welding workshop matches shipyard and fabrication weld inspection, the oil and gas site and storage tank match refinery, LNG, terminal and pipeline work, and the aircraft hangar matches Keesler, Columbus and Meridian maintenance and the Columbus aerospace plants. See Practical NDT and the Practical NDT Mississippi page.
Your instructor
Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He oversees course content, written practices and Level III services, and the live-virtual and onsite training delivered to Mississippi employers.
NDT training in Mississippi: frequently asked questions
How do I become NDT certified in Mississippi?
Work for or be sponsored by an employer with an SNT-TC-1A written practice.
