Maritime & Shipbuilding NDT Training in Pascagoula, Mississippi

Pascagoula is Ingalls Shipbuilding — the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi, building destroyers, amphibious ships and cutters. Yard work here means thick-section structural UT, production MT at scale, and VT under NAVSEA acceptance; the certification programme behind it is audited to naval standards, and technicians trained into that documentation culture carry it anywhere. The Gulf Coast repair and fabrication belt around the yard adds commercial-class work under ABS.

Maritime & Shipbuilding NDT in brief

Maritime NDT is its own world. The product is enormous, the material is thick section steel and increasingly aluminium, the welding is measured in miles, and the acceptance regimes — classification societies on the commercial side, NAVSEA technical publications on the naval side — are unlike anything in general plant work. Training for it has to reflect that, which is why a shipyard NDT technician's qualification path looks different from a refinery technician's from the first course onward.

What maritime & shipbuilding training covers

Volumetric weld examination dominates: UT on hull butts and seams, with phased array increasingly specified for erection joints because a yard cannot wait for film. MT is the everyday surface method — nearly everything is ferromagnetic — with PT covering the aluminium superstructure and non-magnetic fittings. VT under formal acceptance criteria carries survey work, and RT persists in new construction where a permanent image is contractually required. A maritime training plan front-loads VT and MT, then builds UT depth, because that is the order the work arrives in.

The governing regime

On the naval side, work answers to NAVSEA technical publications with qualification requirements layered over SNT-TC-1A — yards building or repairing naval vessels run some of the most tightly audited certification programmes in US industry. On the commercial side, classification societies (ABS above all in the US) set survey and acceptance requirements, and their surveyors expect examination records in class-recognisable form. A technician who understands why the two regimes differ — one is a customer's technical authority, the other an independent certifier — reads drawings and acceptance criteria correctly from day one.

Who employs certified technicians

US shipbuilding concentrates in a handful of yards, each a certification programme of its own: nuclear carrier and submarine construction in Virginia, submarine work in Connecticut, destroyers in Maine, amphibious and surface combatants in Mississippi, commercial and repair work on every coast. Around them sit the repair yards, the marine terminal operators, and the survey companies — all employing certified technicians against the same method set.

How people enter this sector

Routes into yard NDT are unusually structured: the major shipbuilders run apprentice and trainee pipelines that take people with no inspection background, and trade crossover is constant — welders move into examination faster here than anywhere, because the yards already employ them. Veterans, especially from hull and machinery ratings, map directly onto the work.

How training is delivered in Pascagoula

Atlantis delivers training on-site at employer facilities — your equipment, your procedures, your Written Practice — under ASNT Level III oversight. We do not operate walk-in classrooms, and say so plainly: for a company qualifying technicians, on-site delivery is the stronger model, and for individuals, cohorts form around employer demand.

Maritime NDT training in Pascagoula: the short answer

Short answer: Atlantis NDT trains Pascagoula technicians, shipyard subcontractors and Jackson County fabricators to ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level I, II and III in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET. Theory is delivered live online or onsite at your facility, practicals run on real specimens under an ASNT Level III, and your employer certifies you under its written practice. Navy shipbuilding work adds NAVSEA qualification, which the yard controls.

Pascagoula is unusual because two very different inspection economies sit side by side on the same stretch of the Mississippi coast. One is naval and commercial shipbuilding, governed by NAVSEA technical publications and class society rules. The other is refining and energy, governed by ASME and API codes, with the same welders, fitters and inspectors often moving between them depending on who is hiring that quarter. This section is written to help you decide which training route fits which of those worlds, and where an SNT-TC-1A programme delivered online or at your own shop is the practical answer. There is no Atlantis classroom in Pascagoula or anywhere in Mississippi; we bring the course to your crew.

Maritime NDT work in Pascagoula and the Mississippi Gulf Coast

HII's Ingalls Shipbuilding is the anchor. The Pascagoula yard builds guided-missile destroyers, amphibious assault and transport dock ships, and national security cutters for the Coast Guard, and it is one of the largest private employers in the state. The scale of that yard is what makes Pascagoula a maritime NDT town: miles of structural welding on thick plate, piping systems in carbon steel, stainless and copper-nickel, and an inspection programme audited to naval standards.

The yard does not stand alone. Bollinger's Mississippi shipbuilding operation (the former VT Halter Marine yards) builds and repairs vessels on the Pascagoula River, and the surrounding belt of steel fabricators, machine shops, blasting and coating contractors and staffing firms supplies people and parts to both yards. Down the coast, Gulfport and Biloxi have their own marine fabrication and repair work, and Mobile, Alabama, a short drive east, adds aluminium shipbuilding and repair to the regional labour market.

The energy side matters just as much for an NDT technician's career. Chevron's Pascagoula Refinery is one of the larger refineries in the country, and the Gulf LNG terminal and the port's marine terminals add pressure vessel, piping and tank work. Turnarounds at the refinery pull certified UT, RT, MT and PT technicians from across the coast, which means a technician with a solid SNT-TC-1A Level II has options outside the shipyard calendar.

Which NDT methods Pascagoula maritime work uses, and under which rules

Use this table as context; the contract and purchase order always decide which code, edition and acceptance clause apply.

MethodMaritime application in PascagoulaCode or standard usually cited
UT (Level I, II, III)Thick-plate hull and deck butt welds, lamination checks on plate, thickness gauging on repair and conversion workMIL-STD-2035 for naval acceptance; ABS rules and AWS D1.1 for commercial; ASME V for pressure parts
PAUTEncoded weld examination where the contract permits it in place of film; refinery turnaround weld and corrosion scansContract technical requirements; ASME V Article 4
TOFDFlaw sizing on thick commercial and pressure welds, paired with PAUTASME V; owner specification
RTPiping and pressure-boundary welds where a permanent image is required; refinery and terminal pipingMIL-STD-2035; ASME V; B31.3 for process piping
MTThe everyday production method on ferromagnetic hull and structural weldsMIL-STD-2035; AWS D1.1; ASME V Article 7
PTAluminium, stainless and copper-nickel systems; non-magnetic fittingsMIL-STD-2035; ASME V Article 6
VTWeld visual inspection before every other method; fit-up and workmanship checks on every blockMIL-STD-2035 visual criteria; AWS D1.1
ETHeat-exchanger tubing at the refinery and terminals; surface crack checks on non-ferrous partsOwner and plant specifications

A useful spotlight for Pascagoula is MT and VT on block construction. Yard production volume means a technician who can perform clean, well-documented MT and VT quickly is in steady demand, and those methods are also the fastest to bring to Level II. Building UT on top of that foundation opens refinery and higher-paying volumetric work.

Which certification scheme Pascagoula maritime employers expect

Atlantis trains to ASNT SNT-TC-1A. The other schemes are listed so you know what employers may ask for, not because we offer them.

SchemeWho on the Mississippi coast requires itDoes SNT-TC-1A training fit?
ASNT SNT-TC-1A (employer-based)Commercial shipyards and repair yards, fabricators, inspection contractors, refinery and terminal contractorsYes. This is what we train to; your employer certifies you under its written practice.
NAVSEA T9074-AS-GIB-010/271Naval shipbuilding and the subcontractors performing NDT on Navy contracts that invoke itAs a foundation. The yard or activity runs the naval qualification and certification; a commercial course does not grant it.
Coast Guard and class society rules (ABS and others)Commercial vessel construction and repair under class or Coast Guard oversightUsually yes, subject to the yard's approved procedures and the surveyor's acceptance.
Owner programmes at the refinery and terminalsOperators and their contract inspection firmsYes for NDT technicians. Note that API 510/570/653 inspector certifications are separate credentials for inspectors, not technician training, and we do not offer them.
AWS Certified Welding InspectorSome yards and fabricators want CWI for weld inspection leadsNo. CWI is a separate AWS credential that we do not train; SNT-TC-1A VT covers different ground.

For a technician in Jackson County, the practical conclusion is simple. If you want to work inside a naval shipbuilding inspection department, apply to that programme. If you want flexibility across commercial yards, fabricators and the refinery, an employer-certified SNT-TC-1A Level II in MT, PT, VT and UT is the most portable thing you can hold on this coast.

The SNT-TC-1A certification path for Pascagoula technicians, step by step

  1. Your employer's written practice. SNT-TC-1A is employer-based: each company writes its own procedure setting training hours, experience, exam content and certification authority. Without one, the rest does not count. See written practice development.
  2. Formal training. Theory in the method and level, covering principles, equipment, technique, codes and acceptance criteria. Recommended minimum hours are listed in our training requirements matrix; your written practice sets the actual figure.
  3. On-the-job experience. Logged and supervised time on real work. In a shipyard economy that is rarely the bottleneck; documentation of it often is.
  4. Examinations. General (theory), specific (your employer's procedures and codes) and practical (real specimens), administered and graded by a Level III.
  5. Vision examination. Near-vision and colour contrast checks on the schedule in the written practice.
  6. Employer certification. Signed by the employer and valid while you work under that written practice.
  7. Recertification. At the interval the written practice defines.

Radiation licensing and TWIC for Pascagoula crews

Mississippi is a long-standing NRC Agreement State. The Mississippi State Department of Health, through its Division of Radiological Health, licenses radioactive material use and registers X-ray equipment, so radiography companies working at the yards, fabricators or the refinery operate under state licences and state radiation safety rules. Industrial radiographers must meet the training and certification requirements in those rules, and an RT method course does not by itself satisfy them. Your radiation safety officer will tell you what the company's licence requires.

Port and terminal work brings a second requirement. Facilities regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act, which includes port terminals and refinery marine docks, require a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) for unescorted access. Technicians who expect to work on the refinery dock, the LNG terminal or port facilities should apply early, because the credential takes time to issue. Naval shipyard access is controlled separately by the yard.

How Pascagoula crews can take the training

Two calendars shape scheduling here: the shipyards' production milestones and the refinery's turnaround windows, plus the Gulf hurricane season, which can disrupt both. We plan onsite blocks around all three. Ask about onsite training for your Pascagoula crew and tell us which windows work.

What a Pascagoula employer receives from an onsite course

Employers on the coast usually ask the same question before booking: what paperwork do we end up with, and will it survive an audit? At the end of an onsite course you receive a training record for each technician showing the method, level, hours, dates, course outline and instructor; graded exam records where Atlantis administers exams under your written practice; a description of the practical specimens used; and notes on any gaps we found between your procedures and the contract or code you work to. Those records are designed to be filed directly into each technician's certification file so the employer's Level III can sign certifications without chasing missing documents. If a prime contractor, class surveyor or refinery owner audits your programme next quarter, the evidence is already in order.

Level III services and written practices for Pascagoula employers

Subcontractors to the shipyards and small inspection firms on the coast often need a Level III more than they need a course. Typical requests include writing a first written practice so the company can certify its own technicians, aligning procedures with a new contract's requirements, administering and grading exams, and putting certification files in order before an audit. We provide written practice development, procedure review, exam administration and ongoing Level III support, and run multi-method programmes through corporate NDT training and maritime corporate training.

Consulting detail for the area is on NDT consulting in Pascagoula, maritime NDT consulting in Pascagoula and refining NDT consulting in Pascagoula. Book a Level III consultation if your programme needs a review.

Practise before the practical exam

The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees practise 12 methods in five environments, including a welding workshop, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It helps with set-up, scan coverage and indication recognition between theory sessions. It is practice only and does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.

Your instructor

Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who sets course content, administers and grades examinations where your written practice assigns that role to Atlantis, and reviews employer written practices.

Frequently asked questions about maritime NDT training in Pascagoula

How do I get NDT certified in Pascagoula?

Get hired or sponsored by an employer with an SNT-TC-1A written practice, complete formal training and logged experience, pass the general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and pass the vision test. Training can be online or onsite; certification is signed by your employer.

Can I take NDT training online in Mississippi?

Yes, for the theory portion. Practical training and the practical exam are done on real specimens, onsite at your employer or in a scheduled block.

Does Atlantis train for NAVSEA shipyard certification?

No. Naval NDT qualification is administered by the yard or activity doing Navy work. Our SNT-TC-1A training is a sound foundation and is what commercial yards and fabricators commonly use.

How long does UT Level 2 training take?

That depends on your employer's written practice and your existing experience. The recommended minimum training and experience hours are listed in our training requirements matrix; experience usually takes far longer than classroom time.

Do I need a licence for radiography in Mississippi?

The radiography company needs a state licence or registration from the Mississippi State Department of Health, and radiographers must meet the state's training and certification requirements for industrial radiography. Ask your radiation safety officer.

Do I need a TWIC card to work NDT in Pascagoula?

For unescorted access to MTSA-regulated port facilities, including refinery docks and marine terminals, yes. Shipyard access is controlled by the yard itself.

What does maritime NDT training cost in Pascagoula?

Quote on request. It depends on method, level, group size, online versus onsite delivery and any Level III services. Request a quote and we reply within one business day.

Is ASNT certification recognised by Pascagoula employers?

Yes for commercial yards, fabricators and refinery contractors. Naval work layers NAVSEA qualification on top.

Can I use the GI Bill or WIOA funding?

Only at approved schools and programmes, and Atlantis does not claim that approval. Check with the VA or your WIN Job Center. Employer-paid training is the more common route in NDT.

Which method should a shipyard welder learn first to move into NDT?

VT and MT. Welders already understand weld profiles and discontinuities, which gives them a head start. See our guide on moving from welder to NDT technician.

Can a small Pascagoula subcontractor certify its own NDT technicians?

Yes, if it has a written practice and access to a Level III for exam administration and certification decisions. Many small firms use an outside Level III for that role.
