Maritime & Shipbuilding NDT Training in Groton, Connecticut
Groton is General Dynamics Electric Boat — nuclear submarine construction, the most demanding examination environment in US shipbuilding. Hull and pressure-boundary work drives deep UT scope with qualification layered well above baseline SNT-TC-1A, and the naval-nuclear interface means records discipline at a level few industries ever require. The surrounding New England supplier base examines to the same flow-down requirements.
Maritime & Shipbuilding NDT in brief
Maritime NDT is its own world. The product is enormous, the material is thick section steel and increasingly aluminium, the welding is measured in miles, and the acceptance regimes — classification societies on the commercial side, NAVSEA technical publications on the naval side — are unlike anything in general plant work. Training for it has to reflect that, which is why a shipyard NDT technician's qualification path looks different from a refinery technician's from the first course onward.
What maritime & shipbuilding training covers
Volumetric weld examination dominates: UT on hull butts and seams, with phased array increasingly specified for erection joints because a yard cannot wait for film. MT is the everyday surface method — nearly everything is ferromagnetic — with PT covering the aluminium superstructure and non-magnetic fittings. VT under formal acceptance criteria carries survey work, and RT persists in new construction where a permanent image is contractually required. A maritime training plan front-loads VT and MT, then builds UT depth, because that is the order the work arrives in.
The governing regime
On the naval side, work answers to NAVSEA technical publications with qualification requirements layered over SNT-TC-1A — yards building or repairing naval vessels run some of the most tightly audited certification programmes in US industry. On the commercial side, classification societies (ABS above all in the US) set survey and acceptance requirements, and their surveyors expect examination records in class-recognisable form. A technician who understands why the two regimes differ — one is a customer's technical authority, the other an independent certifier — reads drawings and acceptance criteria correctly from day one.
Who employs certified technicians
US shipbuilding concentrates in a handful of yards, each a certification programme of its own: nuclear carrier and submarine construction in Virginia, submarine work in Connecticut, destroyers in Maine, amphibious and surface combatants in Mississippi, commercial and repair work on every coast. Around them sit the repair yards, the marine terminal operators, and the survey companies — all employing certified technicians against the same method set.
How people enter this sector
Routes into yard NDT are unusually structured: the major shipbuilders run apprentice and trainee pipelines that take people with no inspection background, and trade crossover is constant — welders move into examination faster here than anywhere, because the yards already employ them. Veterans, especially from hull and machinery ratings, map directly onto the work.

How training is delivered in Groton
Atlantis delivers training on-site at employer facilities — your equipment, your procedures, your Written Practice — under ASNT Level III oversight. We do not operate walk-in classrooms, and say so plainly: for a company qualifying technicians, on-site delivery is the stronger model, and for individuals, cohorts form around employer demand.

Maritime NDT training in Groton: the short answer
Short answer: Atlantis NDT trains Groton-area technicians and supplier crews to ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level I, II and III in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET. Theory runs live online or onsite at your facility, practicals run on real specimens under an ASNT Level III, and your employer certifies you under its written practice. Naval submarine work adds NAVSEA qualification on top, which the shipyard or prime controls, not a training provider.
That last sentence matters more in Groton than almost anywhere else in the country. The submarine yard on the Thames River sets the tone for the whole regional supplier base, and its certification rules are not the same as the rules at a refinery or a structural steel shop. This section is written for three readers: the supplier or fabricator in southeastern Connecticut who needs an SNT-TC-1A programme that holds up under prime-contractor audit, the technician who wants a solid Level II foundation before applying to a naval programme, and the quality manager trying to work out which certification scheme applies to which job. There is no Atlantis classroom in Groton or anywhere else in Connecticut. The course comes to your shop or your screen.

Maritime NDT work in Groton and the Thames River corridor
Groton is defined by General Dynamics Electric Boat, which designs and builds the Navy's Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines, and by Naval Submarine Base New London, which sits on the Groton side of the river despite its name. Electric Boat also runs a large module fabrication operation at Quonset Point in Rhode Island, so a great deal of the region's weld inspection follows sections and components moving between the two sites and the suppliers that feed them.
Around that core sits a supplier and repair economy that is easy to overlook from outside: machine shops making pressure-boundary and structural components, fabricators producing foundations, tanks and piping assemblies, valve and fitting manufacturers, and the engineering and test labs that support all of them. Many of these firms do not build ships at all, but they inspect parts that will end up in one, and the inspection requirement flows down to them through the purchase order. The commercial side is smaller than in Gulf Coast ports, but it exists: ferry and workboat repair along the Connecticut shoreline, marina and marine-terminal structures, and the New London waterfront.
Two non-maritime anchors share the same technician pool. Millstone Power Station in neighbouring Waterford is a nuclear plant with its own outage-driven inspection demand under ASME Section XI, and the region's general fabrication and pharmaceutical-campus construction work calls on the same UT, MT, PT and VT skills. Technicians in southeastern Connecticut often move between these worlds over a career, which is a good reason to build a broad, well-documented SNT-TC-1A foundation first.
Which NDT methods Groton maritime work uses, and under which rules
The table below maps each method we train to the kind of work it supports locally and the document that usually governs acceptance. The codes are context: the purchase order and the contract technical requirements always decide which edition and which clause apply.
| Method | Maritime application in Groton | Code or standard usually cited |
| UT (Level I, II, III) | Thick-section hull and structural butt welds, plate lamination checks, thickness surveys on repair work | MIL-STD-2035 acceptance for naval work; ABS rules or AWS D1.1 for commercial structures; ASME V for pressure parts |
| PAUT | Encoded weld examination where the contract allows phased array in place of film; supplier weld qualification support | Contract technical requirements; ASME V Article 4 for pressure work |
| TOFD | Flaw sizing on thick welds, usually paired with PAUT on commercial and pressure-vessel work | ASME V; customer specification |
| RT | Pressure-boundary and piping welds where a permanent image is required; castings | MIL-STD-2035 for naval acceptance; ASME V and B31.1/B31.3 for piping |
| MT | Surface and near-surface cracking on ferromagnetic steel welds, fit-ups and back-gouges | MIL-STD-2035 naval acceptance; AWS D1.1; ASME V Article 7 |
| PT | Non-magnetic materials: stainless and nickel alloy piping, copper-nickel systems, aluminium fittings | MIL-STD-2035; ASME V Article 6 |
| VT | Weld visual examination before every other method; fit-up, profile and workmanship checks | MIL-STD-2035 visual criteria; AWS D1.1 Clause 8 for structural work |
| ET | Tubing and heat-exchanger inspection; surface crack detection on non-ferrous components | Customer and plant specifications |
For a Groton supplier, the practical ordering usually runs VT first, then MT and PT, then UT. Visual and surface methods are where most production inspection hours go, and a technician who is solid on those is useful on day one. UT and PAUT take longer to build and are where the qualification gap between commercial and naval work is widest.
Which certification scheme Groton maritime employers expect
This is the question most people searching for "maritime NDT training Groton" are really asking. The honest answer is that it depends on who you work for and what you inspect. Atlantis trains to ASNT SNT-TC-1A. The other schemes below are listed so you know what your employer may require on top, not because we offer them.
| Scheme | Who in the Groton area requires it | Does SNT-TC-1A training fit? |
| ASNT SNT-TC-1A (employer-based) | Commercial fabricators, machine shops, test labs, many tier-two and tier-three suppliers, commercial marine repair | Yes. This is what Atlantis trains to, and the employer certifies under its own written practice. |
| NAVSEA T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 | The shipyard and suppliers performing NDT on naval ship and submarine work where the contract invokes it | As a foundation only. Naval qualification and certification are run by the activity performing the work under NAVSEA rules; a commercial course does not grant it. |
| Naval nuclear propulsion requirements | Work on reactor plant systems, controlled by separate NAVSEA technical requirements | No. This is a closed, programme-controlled qualification. General SNT-TC-1A theory helps understanding but is not a route in. |
| ANSI/ASNT CP-189 and ASME Section XI | Nuclear utility work, such as outages at the nearby nuclear plant | Partly. The method theory is shared; the utility programme sets its own certification and, for some UT, separate performance demonstration. |
| ABS and other class society expectations | Commercial vessel repair and new construction under class | Yes in most cases. Class surveyors typically accept technicians certified under a recognised scheme such as SNT-TC-1A, subject to the yard's approved procedures. |
Two points follow from that table. First, if you work for or supply the submarine programme, your employer's quality organisation and the contract decide your certification route; the most useful thing a training provider can do is give you strong theory and documented hours that the employer's programme can build on. Second, the SUBSAFE culture that grew out of the loss of USS Thresher means records are audited with unusual rigour. A training record that does not show the method, level, hours, instructor and outline will cause problems at audit, so we issue records built to be filed straight into an employer's certification file.
The SNT-TC-1A certification path for Groton technicians, step by step
- Your employer's written practice comes first. SNT-TC-1A is a recommended practice, not a licence. Each employer writes its own procedure setting training hours, experience, exam content and who signs certifications. If your company does not have one, see written practice development.
- Formal training in the method and level. Classroom or live online theory covering principles, equipment, technique, codes and acceptance criteria. The hours are set by the written practice; the recommended minimums are in our training requirements matrix.
- Logged on-the-job experience. Supervised time performing the method on real work, verified by a certified supervisor. For a Groton supplier, that means real welds and components, not only coupons.
- General, specific and practical examinations. The general exam tests method theory, the specific exam tests your employer's procedures and codes, and the practical exam is performed on real specimens. A Level III administers and grades them.
- Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast checks, repeated on the schedule your written practice sets (annually for near vision under SNT-TC-1A).
- Certification by the employer. Your employer signs the certification; it is valid while you work for that employer and under that written practice.
- Recertification. On the interval the written practice defines, by continuing satisfactory performance or re-examination.

Radiation licensing, base access and security for Groton RT crews
Connecticut became the 40th NRC Agreement State in September 2025. That means the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), through its Radiation Division, now licenses and inspects users of radioactive materials such as the iridium and cobalt sources used in gamma radiography, a role that previously sat with the NRC. X-ray machine radiography was already registered with the state. If your company performs field or shop radiography in Connecticut, check that your licence, radiation safety programme and radiographer certifications reflect the state's current rules rather than older NRC paperwork. Our RT courses cover the method; radiation safety training and radiographer certification for licence purposes are separate requirements that your radiation safety officer will specify.
Work inside the naval base or the shipyard also involves access control. Base access credentials, escort rules, and for some roles security clearance processes are run by the employer and the government, not by any training provider. If your crew needs onsite training at a controlled location, tell us at the quote stage so the employer can arrange access; in most cases it is simpler to run the practical block at your own shop.
How Groton crews can take the training
We deliver in three ways, and most Groton employers combine them.
- Live online theory. Instructor-led sessions on Eastern time, with recorded review material, timed to fit around shift work. This suits individuals and small supplier crews who cannot release people for a full week. See NDT training online.
- Onsite at your facility. An ASNT Level III runs the course at your shop using your equipment, your procedures and, where possible, your own parts as practical specimens. This is the strongest option for a supplier preparing for a prime-contractor audit, because the training uses the exact procedures the auditor will ask about.
- Classroom cohorts. For employers who prefer a block course, we schedule cohorts and quote them individually. We do not operate a training centre in Connecticut.
Scheduling matters in a shipbuilding economy. Supplier workloads follow the yard's build schedule, and onsite courses are easiest to fit in between delivery milestones. Ask about onsite training for your Groton crew and tell us your windows.
Level III services and written practices for Groton suppliers
Many of the firms that call us from southeastern Connecticut are not looking for a course first. They are looking for a Level III who can write or fix their written practice, review their procedures against the contract, administer exams and sign off certifications so the programme survives the prime's next supplier audit. Typical gaps we see in supplier programmes include written practices copied from another company without being adapted, exam records missing the practical specimen description, and vision records that lapsed between audits.
Our employer services include written practice development, procedure review, exam administration and ongoing Level III support. For corporate cohorts across several methods, see corporate NDT training, and for the maritime-specific programme see maritime corporate training. Consulting for the area is described on NDT consulting in Groton and maritime NDT consulting in Groton. Book a Level III consultation if your programme needs a review before an audit.
Practise before the practical exam
Our Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees practise 12 methods in five environments, including a welding workshop and an NDT lab, between theory sessions. It is useful for building familiarity with set-up, scanning patterns and indication recognition before a technician touches the real specimens. It is practice only. It does not replace the practical exam, which is always performed on real parts under a Level III.
Your instructor
Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He sets course content, administers and grades examinations where the employer's written practice assigns that role to Atlantis, and reviews employer written practices.
Local NDT training options compared
People searching for NDT training in Groton usually want a list, so here is an honest one. Check every provider's current offering directly, because course lists change.
- Employer programmes. The shipyard trains and qualifies its own inspection workforce under naval requirements, often through apprenticeship and trainee pipelines. If your goal is naval submarine NDT specifically, applying to that programme is the most direct route, and no outside course substitutes for it.
- CT State Community College, Three Rivers campus (Norwich). Listed in ASNT's educational directory and long associated with workforce programmes for the regional shipbuilding base. A good option for people who want a college-based route; confirm which NDT courses are running.
- Commercial NDT schools in the Northeast. Several private schools in New England and the mid-Atlantic run classroom courses; they suit individuals who want a fixed-date class and can travel.
- Atlantis NDT. Best suited to employers and supplier crews who want SNT-TC-1A training delivered live online or onsite, combined with Level III and written-practice support, and to individuals who need a flexible online theory route their employer can certify against.

Frequently asked questions about maritime NDT training in Groton
How do I get maritime NDT training in Groton?
Decide first whether you are aiming at commercial and supplier work, which uses SNT-TC-1A, or naval shipyard work, which uses NAVSEA qualification run by the yard. For the first, an employer-certified SNT-TC-1A route with live online or onsite training works well. For the second, the shipyard's own trainee and apprentice pipelines are the direct route, and SNT-TC-1A theory is useful preparation.
Does Atlantis offer NAVSEA NDT certification?
No. NAVSEA qualification under T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 is administered by the activity performing naval work. We train to ASNT SNT-TC-1A, which many suppliers use for commercial scope and which gives technicians a strong theoretical foundation.
Can I take NDT training online in Connecticut?
Yes, for theory. Live online sessions cover the classroom portion; the practical portion and the practical exam must be done on real specimens, either onsite at your employer or in a scheduled practical block.
How long does UT Level 2 training take?
It depends on the hours your employer's written practice requires and on how much experience you already have. SNT-TC-1A publishes recommended minimum training and experience hours; our training requirements matrix lists them. Most of the elapsed time is on-the-job experience, not classroom time.
Do I need a licence for radiography in Connecticut?
The company needs a state licence or registration for its sources or X-ray equipment; Connecticut DEEP took over radioactive materials licensing from the NRC in 2025. Individual radiographers must meet the radiation safety training and certification requirements that apply under those rules. Your company's radiation safety officer will specify them.
What does maritime NDT training cost in Groton?
We quote on request. Cost depends on method, level, number of trainees, whether training runs online or onsite at your facility, and whether you also need Level III exam administration or written-practice work. Request a Groton training quote and we reply within one business day.
Is ASNT SNT-TC-1A recognised by Groton employers?
For commercial fabrication, machine shop, test lab and class-surveyed marine work, SNT-TC-1A is the common basis. For naval and naval nuclear work it is a foundation, with the yard's NAVSEA programme on top.
Can a supplier to the submarine programme use an outside Level III?
Many suppliers use an outside Level III for written-practice development and exam administration, as SNT-TC-1A allows. Whether that is acceptable for a specific naval contract depends on the contract's quality requirements, so check the purchase order before engaging anyone.
Can I use the GI Bill or WIOA funding for NDT training?
Those programmes pay only for approved schools and programmes. Atlantis does not claim that approval, so check with the VA or your local American Job Center. Many Groton-area technicians are instead trained at employer expense, which is the more common route in NDT.
Which NDT method should I learn first for shipyard work?
VT and MT, then PT, then UT. That matches the order work arrives in a yard and the order most written practices expect.
Is there an NDT training centre in Groton?
Atlantis does not run one. We deliver live online and onsite at employer facilities. For college-based options see CT State Three Rivers in Norwich, listed above.
How do I prepare for the practical exam?
Get as much supervised time on real parts as your employer allows, review your procedure closely, and use the Practical NDT simulator for extra set-up and scanning practice. Mock exam questions such as our UT Level 2 practice questions help with the written exams.
