NDT Simulator and Hands-On Practical Training in Pascagoula, Mississippi
Pascagoula is a town where two very different kinds of steel get inspected on opposite sides of the same river. On the west bank of the Pascagoula River, naval shipbuilding produces destroyers, amphibious ships and Coast Guard cutters, and every one of those hulls is a long sequence of butt welds, fillet welds and penetrations that someone has to examine. On the east bank, the Bayou Casotte industrial area carries a large Gulf Coast refinery, an LNG terminal and chemical operations, where the inspection problem is corrosion, cracking and wall loss in piping, vessels, exchangers and tanks. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Practical NDT was designed for exactly this kind of mixed workforce. It is an immersive, 3D, game-like environment where a first-week trainee and a working Level II can both log in from a browser or app, pick up a virtual probe or yoke, and work realistic inspection jobs with instant scored feedback. For Pascagoula, that means shipyard weld scenarios and refinery integrity scenarios in one place.
Why Hands-On NDT Practice Matters on Both Banks of the Pascagoula River
Shipyard NDT and refinery NDT reward different habits. In a shipyard, a technician spends shifts scanning weld after weld on plate, bulkhead and piping systems, interpreting indications against acceptance criteria that the program or contract specifies, and working in tight compartments where probe access is awkward and lighting is poor. The hard part is consistency: telling lack of sidewall fusion from a geometric reflector at the root, recognising slag lines and porosity on a radiograph, and not letting fatigue on the fortieth weld of the day change the call. In the refinery, the work is dominated by thickness surveys, corrosion mapping, heat-exchanger tube inspection, alloy verification and turnaround pressure. A technician might go months doing routine thickness readings and then be handed a crack-sizing job during a shutdown with the whole unit waiting on the result.
Both environments share the same weakness: the rare defect. A technician who has not seen a real toe crack, a stress corrosion colony or a laminated plate in half a year is slower and less certain when one finally appears. Physical specimens with those flaws are expensive, hard to borrow and usually locked in a lab across the region. Booking lab time during a hull block schedule or a refinery turnaround is often impossible. A simulator changes that equation. Practical NDT lets a Pascagoula technician rehearse those uncommon indications at home before a shift, between assignments, or during slow weeks, without consuming specimens or calibration blocks and without the radiation-safety controls that real radiography practice would demand. It is repetition without risk, which is exactly what perishable interpretation skills need.
Which Practical NDT Environments Fit Pascagoula Work
Practical NDT is organised into five workplace environments: an NDT Lab with bench specimens and reference blocks, a Welding Workshop with weld coupons and fabrication joints, an Aircraft Hangar for airframe and component inspection, an Oil & Gas Site where weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice happens inside a process plant, and a Storage Tank environment for UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. For Pascagoula, the Welding Workshop and the Oil & Gas Site do most of the heavy lifting, with the Storage Tank environment close behind.
Shipyard crews will spend most of their time in the Welding Workshop, which carries 52 jobs built around weld coupons and fabrication joints. That is where phased array sectorial scans, TOFD diffraction patterns, conventional angle-beam UT and radiographic interpretation of weld flaws can be drilled over and over. Refinery and terminal crews will lean on the Oil & Gas Site, which is the largest environment with 73 jobs covering welds, corrosion, tubes and screening inside a process plant. Tank farm technicians can move to the Storage Tank environment to rehearse shell thickness surveys and floor screening. The NDT Lab, with 52 bench jobs, is the right starting point for new hires who need fundamentals before they are trusted with production work on either bank.
Methods You Can Practice: Phased Array Simulator, TOFD, UT and More
Practical NDT covers twelve methods. Surface methods are PT, MT and VT. Volumetric methods are contact UT, phased array UT, TOFD and RT. Electromagnetic methods are ET and MFL. The platform also covers LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS internal rotary UT for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and PMI for alloy verification. For a shipyard technician, the phased array simulator and TOFD scenarios are the most valuable: you set up a scan plan on a butt weld, run the probe along the weld, read the sectorial image, and then size and characterise what you see, including lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, porosity, slag and cracking. The ultrasonic testing simulator side lets you work conventional shear-wave technique on plate and pipe welds, which remains the backbone of a lot of shipyard acceptance work.
For refinery work across Bayou Casotte, IRIS scenarios let you rehearse internal rotary inspection of exchanger tubes, reading wall-loss maps and distinguishing pitting from general thinning. PMI scenarios rehearse alloy verification on piping components, a check that matters wherever carbon steel and alloy parts could be mixed up during maintenance. LRUT guided-wave screening lets you practise screening long pipe runs and deciding where follow-up inspection is needed. MT and PT scenarios cover surface-breaking cracks on welds and attachments, and VT scenarios train the discipline of a methodical visual before any instrument comes out. RT scenarios cover film and digital image interpretation, so technicians can study weld radiographs without anyone being near a source.
Built for Every Skill Level, from Shipyard Helper to Level III
Practical NDT adapts to three kinds of user. New trainees work through 33 guided lessons that teach fundamentals in order: how the method works, how the equipment is set up, how a basic scan or examination is performed, and what the common indications look like. The feedback is immediate, so a trainee learns what went wrong on a scan while the mistake is still fresh. For Pascagoula’s many helpers and apprentices who are trying to move into inspection roles, this is a structured way to build the foundation before formal classroom and supervised hands-on hours.
Working technicians use Practical NDT differently. A Level II who has been doing thickness readings on the east bank for months can jump into rare-defect refresher scenarios before a turnaround crack-sizing job. A shipyard UT technician moving from surface ship work to a different weld configuration can rehearse new geometries before they meet them in the hull. For Level IIIs and team leads, the platform supports building and assigning scenario sets, benchmarking a crew objectively against the same jobs, and spotting coverage gaps, for example a team that is strong on lack-of-fusion calls but weak on transverse cracking. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training, so the scenarios reflect how inspection is actually performed and assessed rather than how a game designer imagines it.
NDT Practical Exam Preparation: How It Complements Formal ASNT Training
This needs to be stated plainly. Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It does not certify anyone, it does not grant a Level I, II or III, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer’s written practice require for certification. Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer’s written practice defines training, experience and examination requirements, and the practical exam is performed with real equipment on real specimens under the control of the employer’s Level III. A simulator score is not a substitute for any part of that.
What Practical NDT does is make the path to that exam and to competent field work shorter and more confident. A candidate who has already rehearsed setting up a phased array scan, reading a TOFD image or interpreting a weld radiograph dozens of times will use real lab time far more efficiently. That is why we position it as a complement to our real NDT training and certification programs. Formal training delivers the knowledge and the hands-on hours; Practical NDT keeps the hands warm between sessions and after certification. Pascagoula employers working on naval programs may also be bound by NAVSEA-issued NDT requirements, and those program-specific rules are market context that local employers enforce; Practical NDT supports practice but does not administer or certify to any of them.
Pascagoula’s Industrial Geography: Hulls, Refining, LNG and the Port
Pascagoula’s identity is built around the Port of Pascagoula and the two harbours that serve it. On the Pascagoula River side, Ingalls Shipbuilding occupies a large yard where the Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks and America-class amphibious assault ships are built, along with Legend-class National Security Cutters for the Coast Guard. Nearby, Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding, the former Halter Marine yard, is building the Coast Guard’s Polar Security Cutter, the first U.S.-built heavy icebreaker in decades. The shipyards have increasingly pushed work out to regional fabricators and module builders, which means weld inspection demand reaches well beyond the yard gates into the supplier base across Jackson County and the wider Gulf Coast. These are named here only as the industrial context that shapes local NDT work, not as Atlantis customers.
On the Bayou Casotte side, the Chevron Pascagoula Refinery is one of the larger refineries in the United States and has been moving to expand crude capacity. The Gulf LNG terminal, built for LNG import and regasification, sits in the same harbour and has been pursuing conversion toward liquefaction and export. Chemical operations, crude storage and marine terminals round out the corridor. That combination of refining, LNG and bulk storage generates steady demand for corrosion mapping, tank inspection, exchanger tube work, weld inspection on new construction, and turnaround surges that pull in travelling technicians from across the Gulf South.
Radiography is regulated too. Mississippi is an NRC Agreement State, so industrial radiography licensing and inspection for radioactive materials run through the Mississippi State Department of Health’s Division of Radiological Health. That is one more reason RT interpretation practice in a simulator is attractive: interpretation skill can be built without scheduling any exposure work at all.
Hands-On NDT Training in Pascagoula Without Waiting for Lab Time
One of the practical realities on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is that inspection labs, specimen libraries and experienced trainers are not always close to where people live. Many technicians commute along I-10 between Mobile, Pascagoula, Gulfport and Biloxi, and others travel to turnarounds across Louisiana and Texas. Practical NDT fits that pattern because it runs in a browser or app. A technician can rehearse a TOFD scan in a motel room before a shutdown shift, a trainee can work a guided lesson on a weekday evening, and a crew lead can assign the same scenario set to people scattered across three job sites. None of it requires shipping specimens, booking a bench or pulling a senior tech off production to supervise.
For employers, the benefit is visibility. When everyone on a crew works the same scenarios, a Level III can see who is comfortable with sectorial scan interpretation and who needs more supervised time on real welds before being trusted with acceptance calls. That supports better decisions about who goes where, without replacing the supervised experience and certification steps your written practice already requires.
Bringing Practical NDT to Your Pascagoula Team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and we would rather show it than describe it. A demo walks through the environments most relevant to your operation, typically the Welding Workshop for shipyard and fabrication crews and the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments for refinery and terminal teams. We will show how guided lessons work for trainees, how refresher scenarios work for technicians, and how a Level III can build and assign scenario sets and review results. Request a Practical NDT demo for Pascagoula and we will arrange a session around your shift pattern.
Rollouts are flexible. Some teams start with a small pilot group of trainees, others start with experienced technicians preparing for a specific job type. Pricing is quote on request and tailored to team size and use case; the platform is designed to be affordable, accessible and fully customizable. If you also need formal classroom training, consulting on your written practice, or software to manage technician certifications and inspection records, we can cover that too. You can reach us through the quote request form or by email at info@atlantisndt.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?
No. Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. Certification under ASNT SNT-TC-1A follows your employer’s written practice, which includes a practical examination on real specimens with real equipment. The simulator helps you arrive at that exam better prepared and keeps your skills current afterwards, but it does not grant or substitute for certification.
What experience level is it for?
All of them. New trainees follow 33 guided lessons that build fundamentals. Working technicians use rare-defect refresher scenarios between assignments. Level IIIs and team leads build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and identify coverage gaps across the team.
Is there a phased array simulator suitable for shipyard weld inspection?
Yes. The Welding Workshop environment includes weld coupons and fabrication joints where you can practise phased array UT, TOFD and conventional angle-beam UT, then interpret and size the indications you find. It is well suited to rehearsing the weld flaw types common in hull and structural fabrication.
Can refinery and LNG terminal crews on Bayou Casotte use it?
Yes. The Oil & Gas Site environment, the largest in the platform, covers weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice inside a process plant, including IRIS on exchanger tubes, PMI alloy verification and LRUT guided-wave screening. The Storage Tank environment adds UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening.
