NDT Training and Certification in Oklahoma
Short answer: Oklahoma technicians and employers get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT training from Atlantis NDT through live online classes, live-virtual sessions, or onsite delivery at their own fabrication shop, refinery, pipeline yard or hangar. We offer Level I and II courses in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation, all led by an ASNT NDT Level III. Your employer certifies you under its written practice, and we help build or tighten that written practice.
Oklahoma is an energy and aviation state. Cushing, in Payne County, is one of the most important crude-oil storage and pipeline hubs in the world; five refineries operate in Tulsa, Ponca City, Ardmore and Wynnewood; gathering lines, gas processing plants and compressor stations cover the Anadarko and Arkoma basins; and Tulsa has a long tradition of heat exchanger, pressure vessel and process equipment fabrication. On the aviation side, Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City runs one of the largest military aircraft depots in the country, Tulsa hosts one of the world's largest airline maintenance bases, and Oklahoma City is home to the FAA's Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center. Each of those sectors needs certified NDT people. This page explains how training and certification work in Oklahoma, what state regulators require, where the work is and how to get a quote. Request an Oklahoma NDT training quote and we reply within one business day.
Where NDT technicians work in Oklahoma
Direct answer: Oklahoma NDT work clusters in the Tulsa fabrication, refining and airline-maintenance corridor; the Oklahoma City military and civil aviation complex; the Cushing crude hub; the refinery towns of Ponca City, Ardmore and Wynnewood; the oil and gas basins of western and southern Oklahoma; and the military installations at Lawton, Altus and Enid.
Tulsa and Green Country
Tulsa grew up as the "Oil Capital of the World" and still carries that industrial base. The Tulsa area is one of the country's best-known centres for heat exchanger, air-cooled exchanger, pressure vessel, skid and process equipment fabrication, much of it built to ASME Section VIII and shipped to refineries and gas plants worldwide. Those shops need RT, UT, PAUT, MT, PT and VT technicians certified under written practices that satisfy ASME code customers and authorised inspectors. Tulsa's refinery complex adds turnaround work, and the airline maintenance base at Tulsa International Airport, together with aerospace suppliers in the area, brings ET, PT, MT and UT under aviation quality systems. The Port of Catoosa on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System supports heavy fabrication that ships out by barge.
Oklahoma City and Midwest City
Tinker Air Force Base is home to a major Air Force air logistics complex that overhauls tanker, bomber, airborne-surveillance and engine fleets. Depot maintenance work involves ET, PT, MT, UT and RT on aircraft structures and engine components, much of it to military technical orders, and the defence contractors around the base need certified personnel. Oklahoma City also hosts the FAA's Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, a broad aerospace supplier base, and energy company headquarters with field operations across the state. Construction, power generation and transportation projects add VT, UT and MT demand.
Cushing and the crude-oil pipeline crossroads
Cushing is a delivery point for US crude futures and holds a vast concentration of crude storage tanks and pipeline interconnects. Tank construction and repair, tank bottom and shell inspection, pipeline construction and integrity digs keep UT thickness, VT, MT and RT technicians busy. Pipelines radiate from Cushing in all directions, so construction and maintenance contractors throughout central Oklahoma need radiographers and UT technicians qualified to API 1104.
The refinery towns: Ponca City, Ardmore and Wynnewood
Ponca City in the north, and Ardmore and Wynnewood in southern Oklahoma, each host a refinery, along with the mechanical contractors and inspection companies that support them. Turnarounds bring heavy seasonal demand for UT thickness and corrosion mapping, PAUT and RT of piping welds, ET of exchanger tubing, VT of pressure equipment and MT/PT on repairs, generally to ASME Section V, Section VIII and B31.3.
Western and southern Oklahoma oil and gas
The Anadarko Basin, the SCOOP and STACK plays and older fields across the state support gathering lines, compressor stations, gas processing plants and saltwater disposal systems. Midstream construction and maintenance follows API 1104 and ASME B31.4 and B31.8, with RT, UT and VT on pipeline welds and UT thickness on facilities. Oilfield equipment makers and repair shops in towns such as Oklahoma City, Elk City, Enid and Duncan use MT, UT and PT on drill pipe, pressure-control equipment and pumping units.
Military installations: Lawton, Altus and Enid
Fort Sill near Lawton is a major Army installation, Altus Air Force Base trains aircrews on heavy transport and tanker aircraft, and Vance Air Force Base in Enid trains pilots. Aircraft maintenance contractors at the air bases need ET, PT and UT technicians, and Lawton's manufacturing base adds MT and UT work.
Power, wind and infrastructure
Oklahoma has a large fleet of gas-fired power plants, hydroelectric dams on the Grand River and Arkansas River systems, and one of the largest installed wind generation capacities in the country. Power plant outages bring UT, PAUT, ET and VT work, wind towers need weld and bolt inspection, and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation's bridge programme adds AWS D1.5 fabrication inspection.
ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Oklahoma employers
Direct answer: Atlantis NDT offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and Level II courses in eight methods plus Level III exam preparation. The table shows each method, the levels available, how Oklahoma employers use it and prerequisites. Your employer's written practice sets the exact hours and experience.
| Method | Levels | What Oklahoma employers use it for | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) | I, II, III prep | Tank and pipe thickness at Cushing and refineries, weld UT on Tulsa pressure vessels, aircraft structures at Tinker and Tulsa | Level I: per employer. Level II: Level I training plus documented experience |
| Phased Array UT (PAUT) | II, III prep | Pressure vessel and exchanger welds in Tulsa shops, refinery piping, pipeline girth welds, corrosion mapping | UT Level II recommended |
| Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) | II, III prep | Thick-wall vessel and nozzle welds in heavy fabrication, refinery equipment | UT Level II recommended |
| Radiographic Testing (RT) | I, II, III prep | Pipeline girth welds statewide, ASME Section VIII vessel welds, refinery piping | Oklahoma DEQ radiation safety requirements apply before working with sources |
| Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) | I, II, III prep | Oilfield equipment, structural welds, aircraft and engine components, wind tower welds | Per employer |
| Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) | I, II, III prep | Aircraft and engine parts at Tinker and Tulsa, stainless exchanger welds, machined components | Per employer |
| Visual Testing (VT) | I, II, III prep | Pipeline and facility construction, tank inspection at Cushing, fabrication shop welds | Vision test per written practice |
| Electromagnetic Testing (ET) | I, II, III prep | Heat exchanger tubing in refineries and Tulsa shops, aircraft structures and wheels, engine components | Per employer |
Oklahoma fabrication shops typically start new inspectors in VT and MT/PT, then add RT or UT, then PAUT. Pipeline contractors focus on RT and UT, while aviation employers build ET, PT and UT. Aviation customers and military contracts often add requirements beyond SNT-TC-1A, such as NAS 410 or technical orders; we train to SNT-TC-1A and help your written practice document anything extra. Level III candidates can see ASNT Level III training and exam preparation.

Oklahoma City. Military depot maintenance at Tinker and the contractors and suppliers around it make Oklahoma City the state's aerospace NDT centre. Employers need ET, PT, MT and UT technicians with clean, auditable records. Energy companies and construction projects add pipeline, facility and structural work. See the Oklahoma City NDT training page.
Tulsa. Tulsa's fabrication shops build heat exchangers, pressure vessels and process skids to ASME Section VIII, so RT, UT, PAUT, MT, PT and VT are all in daily use, and authorised inspectors expect solid written practices. The airline maintenance base adds a large aviation NDT workforce, and Tulsa refineries add turnaround work. See the Tulsa NDT training page.
Lawton. Fort Sill and the manufacturing base in Lawton generate steady VT, MT and UT work, and southwest Oklahoma oil and gas operations add pipeline inspection.
Ponca City. The refinery and associated pipelines in Ponca City drive turnaround demand for UT, PAUT, RT, ET and VT, with contractors often training cohorts just before the season.
Cushing. Tank and pipeline work dominates: UT thickness surveys, VT and MT on tank repairs, RT and UT on new pipeline welds. Contractors typically train crews onsite at their yards.
Ardmore and Wynnewood. Southern Oklahoma's refineries and surrounding oil and gas operations need refinery inspection and pipeline NDT, generally served by contractors who also work in north Texas.

Radiography licensing and other Oklahoma requirements
Direct answer: Oklahoma is an NRC Agreement State; its agreement took effect in September 2000. The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality's Radiation Management section licenses radioactive materials, including industrial radiography sources, and regulates industrial X-ray equipment. Boilers fall under the Oklahoma Department of Labor; intrastate pipelines under the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.
Industrial radiography
Because Oklahoma is an Agreement State, radiography companies working with sources such as iridium-192 hold an Oklahoma DEQ licence rather than an NRC licence, and industrial X-ray machines are registered with DEQ. Oklahoma's rules follow the federal model in 10 CFR Part 34: radiographers and radiographer's assistants must complete radiation safety training and exams, work under supervision as assistants, hold recognised radiographer certification, wear dosimetry and use calibrated survey meters. Companies licensed by the NRC or another Agreement State can work in Oklahoma under reciprocity when their licence allows. Atlantis RT training under SNT-TC-1A covers technique, exposure and film and digital interpretation; it complements but does not replace the radiation safety training and radiographer certification required by Oklahoma rules. Confirm current requirements with DEQ before a crew mobilises.
Boilers and pressure vessels
The Oklahoma Department of Labor's Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Division administers the state's boiler and pressure vessel programme, applying ASME and National Board rules. For Tulsa's many ASME Section VIII fabricators and repair organisations, NDT must be performed to ASME Section V by personnel certified under the shop's quality programme, which makes a clear written practice essential.
Pipelines
Interstate pipelines are regulated by PHMSA. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission's pipeline safety programme oversees intrastate gas and hazardous liquid pipelines. Pipeline construction and repair welds are inspected to API 1104, with ASME B31.4 and B31.8 for design, so radiographers and UT technicians qualified to operator procedures are in steady demand.
Aviation and military
Depot, airline and FAA repair station work sets its own NDT personnel requirements, often referencing NAS 410 or military technical orders. Atlantis provides SNT-TC-1A method training as a foundation; employers manage any additional programme qualifications.
Codes Oklahoma employers commonly use
- ASME Section V and Section VIII for pressure vessels and heat exchangers
- ASME B31.3 in refineries and gas plants
- API 1104 and ASME B31.4/B31.8 for pipelines
- AWS D1.1 for structural welds and AWS D1.5 for bridges
- NAS 410 and military technical orders as aviation context
Some Oklahoma employers also ask for API inspector or CWI credentials; those are separate schemes that Atlantis does not train.
Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Oklahoma
Direct answer: Atlantis NDT has no training centre in Oklahoma. Classroom training is delivered live online or live-virtual, and practical training and exams are delivered onsite at your facility, using your equipment and specimens, under ASNT Level III oversight.
Individual technicians use online NDT training for Level I and II classroom hours, with live sessions led by a Level III covering principles, equipment, technique, codes and interpretation. Practical hours and exams happen with your employer.
Employers with a group usually prefer onsite delivery. We run classroom and practical sessions at your shop, yard, plant or hangar and use your instruments, reference blocks and parts. A Tulsa exchanger shop trains RT and PAUT on its own nozzle and tube-sheet welds; a Cushing contractor trains UT thickness and VT on tank components; an Oklahoma City aerospace supplier trains ET and PT on its own parts.
Oklahoma scheduling follows refinery turnarounds in spring and fall, pipeline construction seasons, tornado season in spring, and depot and airline maintenance schedules. We plan cohorts to finish before each busy window and can switch sessions to live online if weather intervenes. Multi-site programmes run through corporate NDT training. Ask about onsite training for your Oklahoma crew.
For Oklahoma employers: written practice and Level III services
Direct answer: every Oklahoma employer certifying NDT personnel under SNT-TC-1A needs a written practice and Level III oversight. Atlantis NDT writes and revises written practices, reviews procedures, administers exams and provides Level III services for companies without an in-house Level III.
Many Oklahoma fabricators, pipeline contractors and oilfield equipment shops employ certified technicians without a full-time Level III. Authorised inspectors, operators and aviation customers regularly find the same gaps: training hours not documented, practical exams without graded checklists, expired vision tests, and written practices that do not match how work is actually done.
- Written practice development to the current SNT-TC-1A edition and your customers' requirements: written practice development.
- Exam administration under Level III oversight with traceable records.
- Procedure review against ASME, API and AWS.
- Audit preparation for ASME, National Board, operator and ISO 9001 audits.
- Corporate programmes via corporate NDT training.

Practise before your practical exam
Direct answer: the Practical NDT simulator lets Oklahoma trainees practise 12 NDT methods in five 3D environments before their practical exam. It builds familiarity with technique and indications, but it is practice only and does not replace a practical exam on real specimens.
The Practical NDT simulator includes an NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site and storage tank. Those map closely to Oklahoma work: the welding workshop to Tulsa fabrication, the oil and gas site to refineries and pipelines, the storage tank to Cushing, and the hangar to Tinker and Tulsa aviation maintenance. See Practical NDT in Oklahoma and the city pages for Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Lawton and Ponca City. For written-exam practice, use UT Level 2 practice questions.
Your instructor
Direct answer: Oklahoma programmes are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT.
Anoop designs the courses, leads instruction and oversees exams and records so certification holds up under SNT-TC-1A and customer audits. He connects method theory to the codes, procedures and parts your Oklahoma crew uses. Ask about scheduling an Oklahoma programme.
