NDT Inspection Services in Oklahoma

Short answer: Atlantis NDT delivers NDT inspection services across Oklahoma with ASNT-certified technicians under ASNT Level III oversight: UT thickness surveys, PAUT, TOFD, corrosion mapping, MT, PT, VT and ET, radiography through crews licensed in Oklahoma, and NDE support for API 510 vessel, API 570 piping and API 653 tank programmes. Crews are mobilised to your site, the schedule is agreed during scoping, and every job ends in a Level III-reviewed digital report traceable to the code.

Oklahoma's inspection market is built on oil and gas from wellhead to tank. Cushing is the most famous crude storage hub in North America, refineries run in Tulsa, Ponca City, Ardmore and Wynnewood, gathering and processing systems spread across the Anadarko and Arkoma basins, and Tulsa is a national centre for heat-exchanger and pressure-equipment fabrication. On top of that, Oklahoma City and Tulsa host some of the largest aircraft maintenance operations in the country. This page maps that work, the methods and codes that go with it, the Oklahoma agencies behind it, and how to request inspection. If you are ready, request an Oklahoma inspection quote.

Where inspection work is in Oklahoma

Direct answer: Oklahoma inspection demand is centred on the Cushing tank hub, the four refining cities (Tulsa, Ponca City, Ardmore and Wynnewood), the Tulsa fabrication and aerospace cluster, the Oklahoma City aerospace and energy corridor, and the oil and gas producing basins of western, central and eastern Oklahoma, with military aviation at Enid, Altus and Lawton adding specialist work.

Cushing: the crude storage hub

Cushing, in Payne County, is where many of the continent's crude pipelines meet and where the benchmark US light sweet crude contract is physically delivered. The town is ringed by tank farms holding a large share of US commercial crude storage, along with manifolds, pump stations and pipeline terminals. Inspection here is dominated by API 653 work: shell UT thickness surveys, floor MFL scanning with UT prove-up, weld MT and VT on shell-to-bottom joints, and settlement survey support during out-of-service inspections, plus pipeline and manifold weld inspection during expansions. Earthquakes in north-central Oklahoma during the last decade, including one near Cushing in 2016, also raised owners' interest in foundation and settlement checks. See our Cushing page for the procedure side.

Tulsa: refining, heat-exchanger fabrication and aircraft maintenance

Tulsa has a refinery operating as two plants on the Arkansas River, and the metro is widely known for fabricating air-cooled and shell-and-tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels and process skids for the energy industry. That fabrication base generates shop inspection to ASME Section VIII and ASME B31.3: RT or UT of butt welds, PT and MT of nozzle and attachment welds, VT of finished welds and hydrotest support. Tulsa also hosts a very large airline maintenance base, and the Tulsa Port of Catoosa links the region to the inland waterway system. Atlantis already publishes Tulsa pages for pressure vessels, piping, tanks, welds and corrosion.

Ponca City, Ardmore and Wynnewood: the other refineries

Ponca City in the north has a large refinery and associated chemical and terminal operations. Ardmore and Wynnewood in southern Oklahoma each have a refinery, and Wynnewood sits close to the Interstate 35 pipeline corridor. Refinery inspection across these sites follows the familiar pattern: UT thickness at piping CMLs, PAUT and TOFD on new and repair welds, MT and PT during turnarounds, internal VT of vessels and exchangers, and tank surveys in the tank farms. See Ponca City, Ponca City refining and Ardmore.

Oklahoma City: aerospace depot work, energy companies and construction

Tinker Air Force Base, southeast of Oklahoma City, is home to the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, one of the Air Force's largest depot maintenance operations for aircraft and engines, and the FAA's Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center is on the west side of the city. Aerospace contractors around them rely on PT, MT, ET and UT under tightly controlled written practices. Oklahoma City is also an energy headquarters city, so many upstream and midstream inspection scopes are written there even when the work is in the field. Pages: Oklahoma City consulting and Oklahoma City refining NDT.

The producing basins: SCOOP, STACK, Arkoma and the Panhandle

The Anadarko Basin plays known as SCOOP and STACK in central and western Oklahoma, the Arkoma Basin in the southeast and older fields across the state feed gathering systems, compressor stations, gas processing plants and tank batteries. Inspection here means weld inspection on new gathering and plant piping (often to API 1104 or ASME B31.3), UT thickness on produced-water and condensate lines prone to internal corrosion, tank inspection at batteries and saltwater disposal sites, and pressure-vessel checks on separators and treaters.

Military aviation and the rest of the state

Vance Air Force Base at Enid, Altus Air Force Base in the southwest and Fort Sill at Lawton bring aviation and vehicle maintenance work. Enid also hosts nitrogen fertilizer production with high-pressure equipment. Hydroelectric dams on the Grand and Arkansas rivers, wind farms across western Oklahoma and gas-fired power stations add structural and pressure-equipment inspection. See Lawton for the technician side.

API 510, 570 and 653 inspection support in Oklahoma

Direct answer: for Oklahoma tanks, vessels and piping we provide the NDE crews, thickness and weld data, corrosion-rate and remaining-life calculations and written findings that your API-certified Authorized Inspector uses. Atlantis is not your inspector of record; your own API 510, 570 or 653 inspector or inspection agency signs the report.

API 653 tanks. With Cushing at its centre, Oklahoma probably has more large crude tanks per square mile than anywhere else in the country, plus refinery tank farms and thousands of production-site tanks. We provide shell UT surveys, floor MFL scanning with UT prove-up, MT or PT on critical welds, VT of roofs and appurtenances and settlement survey support, with data handed to your API 653 inspector. See API 653 tank services and aboveground storage tank inspection.

API 510 pressure vessels. Refinery vessels in the four refining cities, separators and treaters in the basins, and gas-plant vessels all need external, on-stream and internal inspection. We provide thickness grids, PAUT or TOFD on welds of concern, MT or PT on nozzles and VT of internals, reduced to corrosion rates. See API 510 services.

API 570 piping. We read your CMLs, compare against previous surveys, flag anomalies and screen insulated lines for corrosion under insulation. Produced-water and sour service lines get particular attention. See API 570 piping services.

Pipelines. For the gathering, transmission and crude systems that converge on Cushing, we inspect construction welds and support integrity digs. See pipeline inspection services, Tulsa pipeline inspection and our Tulsa pipeline NDT consulting page.

Turnarounds, tank outages and planned inspection

Direct answer: Oklahoma refinery turnarounds usually fall in spring or autumn, tank out-of-service inspections at Cushing and terminals are scheduled around storage commitments, and fabrication shops need inspection on their production schedule. Each calendar is tight, so scope, procedures and crews should be fixed before the window opens.

For a tank, the expensive part of an internal inspection is the time the tank is out of service: draining, cleaning, gas-freeing, inspecting, repairing and returning it. Inspection that is slow, incomplete or has to be repeated adds days of lost storage. We plan tank floors, shell surveys and weld checks so the crew finishes in one visit and the API 653 inspector has everything needed to set the next interval. For refinery turnarounds in Tulsa, Ponca City, Ardmore and Wynnewood, we separate on-stream work (UT thickness, external VT, corrosion mapping, much of the PAUT) from items that need the unit open, so the turnaround window is used for internal inspection and repairs.

For fabricators, the issue is flow: inspection must keep pace with welding so that repairs are found while the welder is still on the job. Shop inspection can be scheduled by shift or by batch. In all cases our Level III reviews the owner's or purchaser's specification before mobilisation, flags any technique needing qualification or demonstration, and sends technician certifications for your approval. Plan an Oklahoma turnaround or tank outage with us early.

Oklahoma weather has its own hazards: summer heat on tank floors and in shop bays, ice storms in winter, and severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings in spring. Heat-stress plans, lightning stand-down rules and cold-weather equipment checks are built into our site plans.

Oklahoma regulations that shape inspection

Direct answer: Oklahoma inspection is shaped by the boiler and pressure vessel programme of the Oklahoma Department of Labor, radiation licensing by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, pipeline and storage tank oversight by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission alongside PHMSA, and federal OSHA and EPA rules for process safety and oil storage.

Boilers and pressure vessels. The Oklahoma Department of Labor runs the state's boiler and pressure vessel safety programme, requiring registration and certificate inspections of covered equipment by commissioned inspectors, with repairs and alterations to the National Board Inspection Code. Tulsa's many ASME code shops also work under ASME certification with an Authorized Inspection Agency. NDE we perform on new construction or repairs is reported so that the Authorized Inspector, commissioned inspector or repair organisation can use it.

Radiography. Oklahoma is an NRC Agreement State, so industrial radiography licences are issued by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality's radiation management programme rather than by the NRC. Atlantis does not claim to hold an Oklahoma radiography licence; RT is performed by radiography crews licensed in Oklahoma, using our procedures and reporting format, with exclusion zones agreed with your site.

Pipelines and tanks. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission regulates the state's oil and gas industry and, through its Pipeline Safety Department, oversees intrastate pipeline operators under its federal certification; interstate lines fall to PHMSA under 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195. The Commission's Petroleum Storage Tank Division regulates petroleum storage tanks, chiefly underground tanks. Construction welds on pipelines are usually inspected to API 1104.

Process safety and oil storage. Oklahoma's private-sector employers fall under federal OSHA. Refineries, gas plants and chemical plants handling highly hazardous chemicals must run a mechanical integrity programme under the Process Safety Management standard, 29 CFR 1910.119, which is why inspection records have to be traceable and code-referenced. Aboveground oil storage, including tank batteries and terminals, is covered by the EPA SPCC rule, which expects integrity testing to an industry standard such as API 653 or STI SP001.

Always confirm current requirements with the agency. For procedures, written practices and audits, see the Oklahoma NDT consulting hub.

Inspection reports clients can use

Direct answer: Atlantis captures inspection data on site in our own digital reporting platform, has it reviewed by a Level III and issues a report naming the procedure, code, acceptance criteria, technician certification level and instrument calibration, so your Authorized Inspector, insurer or auditor can trace every result.

Tank reports come as plate-by-plate floor maps and shell thickness tables by course, ready for your inspector's corrosion-rate and interval calculations. Vessel and piping thickness data is organised by CML with history alongside. Fabrication weld results reference the weld map and the code acceptance criteria. Every indication has a location, size, evaluation and photograph, and nothing is retyped from handwritten sheets. See our NDT inspection software, reporting software and Tulsa reporting pages.

If you want more than a report, inspection data can be shown on a 3D model of a tank farm or unit through our digital twin platform (see Tulsa and Oklahoma City), and NDT service companies can run scheduling, certification tracking and invoicing in the Atlantis ERP. Level III-led inspection, digital report and optional twin, all from one provider.

Level III oversight on every Oklahoma job

Direct answer: every Atlantis inspection runs under an ASNT NDT Level III, Anoop Rayavarapu, founder of Atlantis NDT, who approves the procedures, reviews results and stands behind the method choices in the report. Oklahoma owners get one accountable technical authority from scoping to sign-off.

Tank owners, refinery inspection departments, code shops and aerospace contractors all ask the same audit questions: which written practice certified the technician, which procedure was used, whether it was qualified, and who reviewed the data. A Level III involved from scoping means the answers exist before the audit. The Level III also makes the technical decisions: when PAUT can stand in for RT on a fabrication job, when TOFD sizing is warranted, how to set an MFL threshold and prove-up plan on a tank floor. Where a technique has to be demonstrated, we write the procedure and run the demonstration. Employers building their own programme can use our written practice development service.
