NDT Inspection Services in Alabama

In brief: Atlantis NDT provides non-destructive testing to refineries, chemical plants, steel mills, shipyards, paper mills, utilities, aerospace manufacturers and pipeline operators throughout Alabama. The service list covers UT thickness and corrosion surveys, PAUT and TOFD weld inspection, radiography performed by radiography crews licensed in Alabama, magnetic particle, penetrant, visual and eddy current testing, and the NDE behind API 510, API 570 and API 653 inspections. Technicians are ASNT-certified, procedures are approved by an ASNT NDT Level III, crews travel to your site, and every job closes with a code-referenced digital report.

Alabama packs an unusual range of inspection work into one state. Mobile Bay combines a deep-water port, Navy shipbuilding, commercial aircraft assembly, a refinery, a chemical corridor and a major steel complex. Birmingham still makes iron and steel products and cast pipe. The Tennessee Valley around Huntsville and Decatur builds rockets and engines, runs chemical and steel plants and hosts a three-unit nuclear station. In between are paper mills, coal mines, auto assembly plants and the fuel pipelines that carry Gulf Coast products to the eastern seaboard. Each of these sectors works to different codes and different customers. The sections below map that market, explain who regulates what in Alabama, and describe how Atlantis scopes and reports a job. If you are ready to price a job, send your Alabama inspection request.

Where inspection work is in Alabama

Direct answer: Alabama inspection demand concentrates in the Mobile Bay industrial area (port, shipyards, refinery, chemical plants, steel and aircraft assembly), the Birmingham iron, steel and pipe district, the Tennessee Valley around Huntsville, Decatur and the Shoals, the Tuscaloosa and Black Warrior Basin area, central Alabama's auto and paper belt, and the Wiregrass in the southeast.

Mobile Bay: port, shipyards, refinery and chemicals

The Port of Mobile handles coal, steel, containers and liquid bulk, and the land around it is the densest inspection market in the state. Austal USA builds naval vessels on the Mobile River, where weld inspection follows Navy requirements such as NAVSEA Technical Publication 271 for NDT and MIL-STD-2035 for acceptance rather than commercial codes. Airbus assembles commercial aircraft at Brookley, with aerospace NDT flowed down from the manufacturer. A refinery at Saraland north of Mobile, chemical plants along the river corridor at Axis, Bucks and McIntosh and in the Theodore industrial area south of the city, terminals and tank farms, and Alabama Power's Plant Barry generate classic mechanical-integrity work: CML thickness surveys, weld examination on repairs and tie-ins, tank inspections and exchanger work. AM/NS Calvert's large steel processing complex north of Mobile adds crane, rolling-line and structural inspection. Salt air, heat and humidity make atmospheric corrosion and CUI the default damage mechanisms on the coast, and hurricane season puts a premium on post-storm structural and tank checks.

Birmingham: iron, steel and pipe

Birmingham was built on iron and steel, and the district still has electric-arc steelmaking and tubular operations at Fairfield, bar and rebar mills, and cast iron and ductile iron pipe foundries such as American Cast Iron Pipe Company and McWane. Inspection there means UT and MT on crane runways, ladles, rolling-mill and pipe-mill components, foundry casting inspection, and weld inspection on structural steel and equipment repairs to AWS D1.1. Coal-fired and gas-fired generating stations west and south of the city, including Plant Miller and Plant Gaston, need boiler tube, header and high-energy piping NDE during outages.

Tennessee Valley: Huntsville, Decatur and the Shoals

Huntsville is the state's aerospace and defence capital, with NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and the Army at Redstone Arsenal, rocket-engine and launch-vehicle production nearby (including Blue Origin's engine plant in Huntsville and United Launch Alliance's factory in Decatur), and a large vehicle assembly plant at Mazda Toyota Manufacturing. Aerospace and space hardware is inspected to customer and agency requirements such as NASA-STD-5009 and NAS 410-based personnel certification, which is specialist work controlled by the prime. Decatur's riverfront is industrial: chemical and fibre plants, a Nucor steel mill and barge terminals on the Tennessee River, all generating vessel, piping, tank and structural scopes. The Browns Ferry nuclear plant near Athens, operated by TVA, runs its NDE under ASME Section XI and owner programmes, and TVA's dams and hydro plants along the river need structural and mechanical inspection. The Shoals area around Florence and Muscle Shoals adds metals, manufacturing and power generation.

Tuscaloosa and the Black Warrior Basin

Tuscaloosa County has a refinery, Mercedes-Benz's Vance assembly plant and its supplier base, and metallurgical coal mining in the Black Warrior Basin, where coalbed methane gathering lines and compression also operate. The refinery generates standard API 510/570/653 scopes; mining and preparation plants need structural, conveyor and heavy-equipment inspection; and suppliers need weld and component NDT.

Central Alabama and the Black Belt: auto, paper and power

Montgomery hosts Hyundai's assembly plant and Maxwell Air Force Base, and the region from the Black Belt to the Coosa and Alabama rivers is home to many of the state's pulp and paper mills. Mills are a distinct inspection specialty: digesters, recovery boilers, power boilers, black liquor and chemical recovery piping, and bleach plant equipment all need thickness surveys, weld inspection and crack detection during annual outages. Hydroelectric dams on the Coosa and Tallapoosa add penstock and gate inspection.

The Wiregrass and pipelines statewide

Southeast Alabama has Southern Nuclear's Farley plant near Dothan and the Army aviation training centre in Dale County, with associated helicopter maintenance and manufacturing. Statewide, major refined-products lines such as the Colonial and Plantation systems cross Alabama on their way from the Gulf Coast to the Southeast and East Coast, and interstate natural gas transmission lines, compressor stations and storage sites cross the state as well. New construction, relocations and integrity digs all call for API 1104 weld inspection and UT.

NDT methods we deliver in Alabama

Direct answer: Atlantis delivers UT thickness and corrosion mapping, conventional UT, PAUT, TOFD, radiography through radiography crews licensed in Alabama, MT, PT, VT and eddy current. The table links each method to typical Alabama applications and the code most often cited. The final technique is agreed with your inspector of record or engineer during scoping.

Magnetic particle (MT)Crane runways and mill components in Birmingham and Calvert; nozzle and attachment welds; mining equipmentASME Section V Article 7; AWS D1.1; ASTM E709 practice
Penetrant (PT)Stainless and alloy welds in chemical and paper plants; aluminium ship structures; non-magnetic componentsASME Section V Article 6; ASTM E165 practice; Navy and customer requirements
Visual (VT)External inspections of vessels, piping and tanks; weld fit-up and final visual; post-hurricane checks of structures and tanksAPI 510/570/653 practices; AWS D1.1; ASME Section V Article 9
Eddy current (ET)Exchanger and condenser tubing where scoped; surface-crack screening through paint; aerospace componentsASME Section V Article 8; customer and owner procedures

Each technique runs to a written procedure approved by an ASNT NDT Level III and is performed by technicians certified under an SNT-TC-1A written practice. Navy, aerospace and nuclear customers often require their own qualifications, procedures or approvals before a contractor works on their hardware; we work to those requirements where the customer accepts us, and we say so plainly where a scope needs credentials we do not hold.

API 510, 570 and 653 inspection support in Alabama

Direct answer: Atlantis performs the nondestructive examination that Alabama owners' API 510 vessel, API 570 piping and API 653 tank inspections depend on, such as thickness surveys, weld examination, tank floor follow-up and visual inspection, and hands the documented results to the owner's API-certified Authorized Inspector, who remains the inspector of record and signs the report.

API 510 pressure vessels. Refinery drums and columns at Saraland and Tuscaloosa, reactors and separators in the Mobile River and Decatur chemical plants, and pressure vessels at paper mills and gas plants follow the same basic pattern. We measure thickness at the vessel's CMLs, examine nozzle and attachment welds with MT or PT during entries, apply PAUT or TOFD where cracking or repair history justifies it, and record external condition. Alabama's state boiler and pressure vessel programme also has in-service inspection requirements, so we format data to support both the API 510 record and any state inspection your item needs. See API 510 pressure vessel inspection support.

API 570 piping. On the coast, the biggest threats are external: CUI on insulated lines and atmospheric corrosion on bare carbon steel, worst at supports, low points and soil-to-air interfaces. We survey CMLs to your isometrics, add scanning at injection points and deadlegs where your programme requires it, and run thickness and corrosion mapping when insulation is removed. Data is delivered per CML for loading into your inspection database. See API 570 piping inspection support.

API 653 storage tanks. Mobile's crude, product and chemical terminals, refinery tank farms and pipeline breakout stations along the Colonial and Plantation routes hold most of the state's large tanks. For out-of-service inspections we do floor scanning with UT prove-up, shell course thickness, shell-to-bottom and repair weld examination, and nozzle work; for in-service externals we measure shell thickness, inspect the roof, shell, foundation and appurtenances, and record settlement for your inspector's API 653 Annex B evaluation. See API 653 tank inspection support and third-party inspection in Mobile.

Atlantis does not sell risk-based inspection (API 580/581) or fitness-for-service (API 579) assessments. We supply the traceable inspection data; the integrity decisions stay with your engineers and programme.

Turnarounds, shutdowns and planned inspection

Direct answer: Most Alabama inspection volume is planned around refinery and chemical turnarounds, paper-mill annual outages, utility spring and autumn outages and shipyard build milestones. Atlantis joins the planning phase, agrees methods and procedures, and mobilises crews to your site on dates fixed during scoping so NDE stays off the critical path.

Each sector plans differently. Refineries and chemical plants on the Mobile River and in Decatur set turnaround dates years ahead and freeze NDE scopes months before, and they benefit most from moving thickness surveys and external visual into on-stream work before the outage. Paper mills take short, intense annual outages in which digesters, recovery boilers and power boilers are opened for a few days; NDE must be pre-planned to the hour, with crews ready to inspect as soon as vessels are cleaned and cooled. Utilities on the Southern Company and TVA systems schedule boiler and turbine work around shoulder-season demand, while nuclear refuelling outages carry long contractor processing lead times. Shipyards need inspection to follow the build schedule, block by block, rather than an outage window.

Weather matters too. Alabama summers bring heat stress on exposed tank shells and high humidity that affects surface preparation for MT and PT, and the Gulf hurricane season from June to November can move turnaround dates or create sudden post-storm inspection needs at coastal terminals. The earlier you share a plan, the easier it is to hold the crew and equipment you need. Plan an Alabama turnaround or outage inspection.

Alabama regulations that shape inspection

Direct answer: Alabama's Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act covers boilers and pressure vessels through the Inspections Division of the Alabama Department of Workforce; the Department of Public Health's Office of Radiation Control licenses radiography because Alabama is an NRC Agreement State; the Alabama Public Service Commission oversees intrastate gas pipelines with PHMSA; and federal OSHA's PSM standard governs mechanical integrity.

Boilers and pressure vessels: a state programme covering both

Alabama adopted its Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act in 2000 (Code of Alabama Title 25, Chapter 12), one of the last states to do so, and regular state inspections began in 2004. The Act created a Board of Boilers and Pressure Vessels and requires permits to install regulated equipment and operating certificates kept current through periodic inspection, unless an item is exempt. The programme was administered by the Alabama Department of Labor, which became the Alabama Department of Workforce in 2025; it sits in that department's Inspections Division. Unlike states that regulate only boilers, Alabama's programme reaches unfired pressure vessels as well, so owners running API 510 programmes also need to keep state operating certificates in order. Confirm the exemption status and inspection interval for specific equipment with the division.

Radiography: ADPH Office of Radiation Control

Alabama has been an NRC Agreement State since 1966. The Alabama Department of Public Health, Office of Radiation Control, licenses radioactive materials, including industrial radiography sources, registers X-ray equipment and enforces radiographer qualification rules. Atlantis does not claim to hold an Alabama radioactive material licence: radiography on Atlantis scopes is carried out by radiography crews licensed in Alabama, working to Atlantis procedures with Level III review. Where radiography's exclusion zone would stop work around a live unit or a busy shipyard, PAUT or TOFD may be an alternative if the code and owner accept it.

Pipelines: Alabama PSC and PHMSA

The Alabama Public Service Commission's gas pipeline safety programme inspects intrastate natural gas systems as PHMSA's state partner, while PHMSA regulates interstate gas and hazardous liquid lines, including the large refined-products systems crossing the state, under 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195. Girth welds on new pipelines generally follow API 1104. See pipeline inspection services.

Process safety, tanks and the coast

Alabama private-sector employers are covered by federal OSHA. The process safety management standard (29 CFR 1910.119) requires written mechanical integrity procedures, inspection and testing to recognised and generally accepted good engineering practice, and a record of each inspection for covered equipment. EPA's SPCC rule (40 CFR Part 112) expects aboveground oil tanks to be integrity-tested to an industry standard such as API 653 or STI SP001, and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) administers state environmental programmes that touch tank and pipeline facilities. Shipyards add OSHA's maritime standards and Navy quality requirements.

Inspection reports clients can use

Direct answer: Every Alabama inspection produces a digital report from Atlantis's own reporting platform. Readings, indications and photos are tied to the asset, location, procedure, technician certification and instrument calibration, acceptance criteria are quoted from the governing code, and each report is reviewed under ASNT Level III oversight before release.

A good report lets the inspector of record, the state boiler inspector, a Navy or aerospace quality representative, an insurer or an OSHA compliance officer follow the evidence without phoning the technician. We make that possible by linking each reading to a named location, each indication to the procedure and acceptance criterion used, and each result to the technician's certification and the instrument's calibration record. Data is captured digitally in the field, offline where needed, and exported in formats inspection data systems can import. Learn more on the NDT inspection software page and in best NDT reporting software 2026; for marine customers, see NDT reporting software in Mobile.

The data can also go beyond a PDF. It can drive scheduling, certification tracking and invoicing in Atlantis ERP, or be shown on a 3D model in our digital twin platform; see digital twins in Mobile and digital twins in Huntsville. Level III-led inspection, digital reporting and an optional twin from one company is a combination few inspection contractors offer.

Who licenses industrial radiography in Alabama?

Alabama is an NRC Agreement State. The Alabama Department of Public Health's Office of Radiation Control licenses radioactive materials and regulates industrial radiography. Radiography on our scopes is performed by crews licensed in Alabama.

Can you perform API 653 tank inspection in Mobile?

We perform the NDE that API 653 inspections rely on: floor scanning with UT prove-up, shell thickness, weld examination and settlement measurement. Your API 653-certified Authorized Inspector remains the inspector of record and signs the report.

Do you inspect ships and shipyard welds?

We can perform UT, MT, PT, VT and radiography (through licensed crews) on marine fabrication where the shipyard or customer accepts our procedures and personnel. Navy work follows requirements such as NAVSEA Technical Publication 271 and MIL-STD-2035, and the yard or customer decides which contractors may work to them.

Do you inspect paper-mill digesters and recovery boilers?

Yes. Thickness surveys, weld examination with UT, MT or PT, and visual inspection of digesters, recovery and power boilers, and chemical recovery piping are typical outage scopes. Plan them early so the crew is ready the moment vessels are released.
