The Los Angeles NDT services market, from the provider's side

Los Angeles concentrates West Coast refining — the complexes at El Segundo, Carson, Wilmington and Torrance — beside the largest port complex in the hemisphere and an aerospace manufacturing base that never left.

Refinery API programmes under the country's tightest regulatory scrutiny, port crane and terminal examination, and aerospace work carrying NAS 410 personnel requirements. For the companies doing this work, the operational load concentrates around the refinery belt from El Segundo to Wilmington, the San Pedro Bay terminals, and the aerospace plants across the south bay — and the back office that keeps crews certified, equipment calibrated and reports moving is what decides which providers grow.

Why turnaround-driven inspection companies outgrow spreadsheets first

A refinery turnaround compresses everything a spreadsheet handles badly into one brutal window: dozens of technicians mobilised at once, every one of them needing current certifications and vision records the owner's contractor portal will check, equipment that must arrive calibrated with certificates in hand, and thousands of examination records that become the client's permanent inspection history. NDT inspection software earns its keep here or nowhere — when the planner asks which UT crews are available with in-date certs for a unit coming down next month, the answer has to come from the system, not from someone's memory of a shared drive.

The quieter failure is revenue: turnaround work is bid tight, and without job-level costing an inspection company discovers which scopes lost money only at year end. An ERP built for inspection work ties technician hours, equipment days and consumables to each work order as it happens, so the margin conversation happens while the job is still running.

What an ERP built for NDT companies covers in Los Angeles

Turnaround markets punish disconnected tools hardest, so in Los Angeles Atlantis is deployed as one operational spine — NDT inspection software and the business layer on the same records:

Certification and personnel tracking. Every technician's methods, levels, expiry dates, eye-exam currency and Written Practice records under SNT-TC-1A or CP-189 — with the audit view a client's quality department expects, ready before they ask.

Equipment and calibration management. The instrument register with calibration due dates, certificates attached, and traceability that satisfies ISO 17025-minded reviewers — so nothing leaves the shop out of date.

Work order and crew scheduling. Who is qualified, who is available, what the job needs — matched in one view, from a single technician call-out to a full turnaround mobilisation.

NDT reporting. Findings captured once — in the field or the shop, offline if needed — flowing into code-referenced report templates, so the deliverable ships while the competitor is still retyping field sheets. This is the inspection management software layer clients actually see.

Quoting, invoicing and job costing. Hours, equipment and consumables tied to each work order as they happen, so every job shows its true margin and the next bid learns from the last one.

Frequently asked questions

Does Atlantis understand how Los Angeles inspection companies operate?

The platform is built by ASNT Level III practitioners around the workflows above — certification tracking, calibration, field data capture, code-referenced reporting — rather than adapted from generic field-service software. Regional specifics like the client mix around the refinery belt from El Segundo to Wilmington, the San Pedro Bay terminals, and the aerospace plants across the south bay shape configuration, not custom development.

Can we keep our existing report formats and client requirements?

Yes — report templates, client-specific deliverables and your Written Practice structure are configuration. The system adapts to how you already serve your clients; switching software should never mean renegotiating what your clients receive.

Los Angeles pairs refining with aerospace inside the same few ZIP codes. An NDT ERP serving this market has to carry the evidence those operators audit against — Cal/OSHA Process Safety Management for Petroleum Refineries (8 CCR 5189.1), API 510 / 570 / 653, NAS 410 and Nadcap AC7114 (aerospace NDT), ASTM E1417 / E1444 penetrant and magnetic particle — with technician certification, equipment calibration and inspection records.

Chevron's El Segundo refinery runs 276,000 bpd and covers more than a quarter of that city's land area; Marathon's Los Angeles refinery straddles Carson and Wilmington, where roughly 20 percent of the land is refinery. A few blocks inland, El Segundo holds Boeing's Satellite Development Center, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman and The Aerospace Corporation, over 20,000 aerospace jobs in one small city. Wilmington and San Pedro form the Port of Los Angeles waterfront. The result is refinery turnaround work under California's refinery-specific PSM rule and Nadcap-audited aerospace NDT within the same commute. Operators including Chevron El Segundo Refinery, Marathon Los Angeles Refinery (Carson/Wilmington), Boeing Satellite Development Center (El Segundo) set the pre-qualification bar their contractors inherit. The system of record for that evidence is the ERP, not a spreadsheet a technician maintains between jobs.

What must an NDT ERP track for inspection firms in Los Angeles?

Evidence against Cal/OSHA Process Safety Management for Petroleum Refineries (8 CCR 5189.1), API 510 / 570 / 653, NAS 410 and Nadcap AC7114 (aerospace NDT), ASTM E1417 / E1444 penetrant and magnetic particle, AWS D1.1 and D1.8 seismic supplement. That means each technician's certification currency by method and level, each instrument's calibration status on the day it was used, and every inspection report bound to the asset and the job that produced it. An auditor asks for those three before anything else.

Can an inspection company in Los Angeles run this alongside its existing accounting?

Yes. The ERP owns operations — jobs, technicians, equipment, reports — and pushes finished invoices to the accounting system, which keeps the chart of accounts, tax and reconciliation. For US firms that usually means QuickBooks; the split is documented in the QuickBooks integration guide rather than forcing a migration nobody asked for.

Does it work offline for field crews in Los Angeles?

Yes. Field capture runs offline and syncs when the device reconnects, because turnaround decks, tank interiors and remote sites have no usable signal and a record that depends on connectivity is a record that gets rewritten from memory hours later. Offline capture is the difference between a contemporaneous record and a reconstruction.

How long does implementation take for a firm in Los Angeles?

The configuration follows the codes and workflows above rather than a fixed template, so the timeline is set by how much existing data has to be migrated and cleaned — certification records and calibration history are the two that consume the time. Firms usually run the first job cycle in parallel before cutting over.

What happens to inspection records if a technician leaves?

They stay with the asset and the job, which is the point. Employer-based certification ends when the holder leaves, but the reports they signed remain part of the asset's inspection history and are still auditable. A system that stores records per technician rather than per asset loses that history on every departure.

NDT software in Los Angeles: one system for aerospace, refinery and structural inspection

NDT software in Los Angeles has to serve a market that is really three markets. There is aerospace and space manufacturing, where traceability and documented procedures decide whether you keep a supplier approval. There are the South Bay and harbour-area refineries, where turnarounds and refinery safety rules drive large, time-boxed contracts. And there is structural steel and infrastructure, where welds on buildings, bridges and transit projects need inspection and records that stand up to the building department. The Atlantis ERP solution gives a Los Angeles NDT company one system for all three.

The names are well known. Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Raytheon and the Aerospace Corporation have long histories in the South Bay, SpaceX builds in Hawthorne, and a supply chain of machine shops, forging houses, heat treaters and composite fabricators runs from the San Fernando Valley to Torrance. On the energy side, the Chevron El Segundo refinery, Marathon's Los Angeles refinery in Carson and Wilmington, Valero Wilmington and the Torrance refinery keep inspection contractors busy, alongside tank terminals and pipelines around the Port of Los Angeles. On the civil side, Metro rail extensions, Caltrans bridge work and steel-framed buildings in a high-seismic region all need weld inspection.

The typical Los Angeles NDT contractor is either a specialist (an aerospace lab doing PT, MT, UT and ET under strict procedures) or a field services company that sends UT, RT, PAUT and TOFD crews into refineries and construction sites. Many do both. Cal/OSHA sets workplace safety rules, including the refinery process safety management standard in Title 8 Section 5189.1, and local building departments set special inspection expectations. The ERP does not manage compliance for you. It does keep the records that show who did each inspection, with which instrument, to which procedure revision.

ERP for NDT companies in Los Angeles: why generic systems fall short

An ERP for NDT companies in Los Angeles has to understand method, level, procedure revision and instrument calibration, not just customers and invoices. Generic ERPs were built for manufacturers and distributors; the Atlantis ERP is configured for inspection work from the start.

That difference shows up the first time an aerospace customer audits you. They want to see that the technician who performed a penetrant inspection was certified for PT at the right level on that date, that their vision test was current, that the procedure revision was approved, and that the equipment was in calibration. In the Atlantis ERP those facts live in linked records: the report references the procedure and standard, the technician's certificate and vision test sit in the Certificates app, and the instrument's calibration certificate sits in Asset Management. Company certifications such as ISO 9001 or the accreditations your aerospace customers require are tracked with their own alert days.

The apps that matter most in Los Angeles are NDT Reports, Certificates, Procedures, Asset Management, Team Assignments, Project, Timesheets, Quotations and Invoicing. See all of them on the ERP apps overview.

Technician certification tracking software for aerospace and refinery technicians

Technician certification tracking software for Los Angeles needs to handle more than one scheme at once, because technicians here often hold employer certification under SNT-TC-1A or NAS 410-style written practices alongside client-specific approvals. The Atlantis Certificates app records the scheme (SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, ISO 9712, PCN, CSWIP or other), level, method, certifying body and dates for each certificate.

Status is computed automatically as active, expiring soon, expired or revoked, and warning tasks appear 90 days before a cert or vision test expires. Vision records cover Jaeger J1/J2 near vision, far vision, colour perception and contrast, which matters for PT and MT inspectors reading indications under UV light. Each certification also stores OJT hours, training hours, exam results and the certificate file; examination sheets hold general, specific and practical scores against your passing score. Certificate templates per scheme set validity in months, whether a vision test or exam is required and the minimum OJT and training hours.

For refinery crews, the employee NDT profile adds radiation safety training, radiation badge number and medical fitness expiry. Configurable email alerts go to your Level III and QA manager, and Timesheets warns if someone books hours on a job while their certificate is not valid. See the Certificates app.

Procedure control that survives an aerospace audit

Aerospace customers in Los Angeles will ask which revision of your procedure was in force on a given date. The Atlantis Procedures app answers that directly: every revision is kept as a snapshot and approved revisions are locked.

The register holds document number, revision, method, scope, material, applicable standard, acceptance criteria and body text or uploaded file, covering UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET, TOFD, PAUT, LT, AE, hardness, PMI, CR, DR and more. Workflow runs draft, submitted, reviewed, approved and published, with rejected and archived states, and records who prepared, reviewed and approved each revision with dates. Rejections carry a reason. Approvers receive email notifications and reminders. An AI-assisted first draft helps your Level III start a new procedure quickly, and the Level III still reviews and approves it before it is used. See Procedures.

Calibration management software for labs and field crews

Calibration management software in Los Angeles has to cover both a fixed lab full of UV lamps, light meters, eddy current instruments and reference standards, and field kits that travel to El Segundo or Wilmington. The Atlantis Asset Management app tracks each item by serial number with calibration frequency, status and full calibration history.

Calibration records store provider, certificate number, standard, range, uncertainty, accredited-lab flag, pass/fail/conditional result and next due date. The certificate register keeps the lab accreditation number and PDF and flags valid, expiring and expired certificates with alerts. In Purchase, vendors are typed as OEM, dealer or calibration lab, with an accredited-lab flag, accreditation number and expiry, and purchase lines can be linked to a specific equipment serial, so the cost of recalibrating a PAUT unit lands on that unit.

In the field, issue and return goes through supervisor and manager approval with condition recorded both ways, reservations prevent clashes during a turnaround, and Team Assignments warns when assigned equipment is out of calibration. Consumables such as penetrant, developer, magnetic particles and couplant carry reorder levels, which matters for a busy PT line. See Asset Management.

Crew dispatch software for turnarounds and construction sites across Los Angeles

Crew dispatch software in Los Angeles is as much about traffic and access as it is about skills. Atlantis Team Assignments takes each job from planned to dispatched, in field, submitted and closed, with site GPS coordinates and mobilisation and demobilisation dates.

During a refinery turnaround you may have a dozen technicians on nights and days while still covering daily structural calls downtown. The availability calendar shows assigned, leave, training, sick and unavailable days and blocks overlaps. Double-booking of technicians and equipment serial numbers is blocked, and each technician shows utilisation and next available date. The Project app records client PO, contract, methods, codes, scope, acceptance criteria, assigned equipment and technicians, plus safety induction and work permit fields, which refinery gatehouses and general contractors both care about. Tasks carry method, technician, component, result, indication and defect counts, and procedure and WPS references. See Team Assignments and Project.

NDT reporting software for structural welds, refinery piping and aerospace parts

NDT reporting software for Los Angeles must produce very different documents for different clients. The Atlantis NDT Reports app has 17 report types, each with its own numbering sequence, and versioned company templates in Excel, Word, PDF or HTML.

For structural steel, weld and job lines record defect type and orientation with overall results of acceptable, not acceptable or acceptable with remarks, and reports reference WPS, drawing and procedure numbers. For refinery work, UT records the probe calibration table, PAUT records focal laws, TOFD, MFL and UT thickness readings by direction are covered, and RT reports record source, technique, IQI type and placement; computed radiography has its own type. For aerospace parts, PT records method and developer and MT records technique and particle type, with eddy current available as ECT.

Reports move through draft, in progress, review, approved and sent with inspector, reviewer and approver signatures, and a third-party or authorized inspector name and signature where needed. Technicians work in the offline field app, useful in basements, tank interiors and refinery units where signal is poor. Clients that want to see findings on a 3D model can be served through Digital Twin Reporting Software and Atlantis Digital Twins. See NDT Reports.

NDT quoting and invoicing software for Los Angeles contracts

NDT quoting and invoicing software here must handle everything from a single-part PT lot to a six-week turnaround. Atlantis Quotations produces branded quotes with job type, site, dates, applicable codes and NDT service products by method, supports online acceptance and signature, and converts accepted quotes to sales orders.

Timesheets capture inspection, travel, standby and setup time with a billable flag and rate multiplier, so night-shift and overtime multipliers flow through to billing. Invoices show NDT project, job or PO number, site, invoice type and industry sector, with labour, equipment and consumables subtotals and line detail by cost centre, method, equipment serial, technician, rate type and days or hours. That line detail is what refinery contract administrators and general contractors expect when they reconcile against their own records. The financial dashboard gives revenue, cost of sales, gross margin, operating expenses, EBITDA and outstanding invoices across twelve months. See Invoicing.

Inspection management software in Los Angeles: growing beyond one sector

Inspection management software also needs a sales engine, because Los Angeles contractors that rely on one refinery or one prime contractor are exposed when budgets move. The Atlantis CRM scores leads 0 to 100 and tags them by service line, NDT service type and industry sector, so you can build separate pipelines for aerospace, energy and construction.

Leads import from CSV, the Business Cards app turns a photo of a card collected at an aerospace supplier day or a welding society meeting into a CRM lead, and drip email sequences by service line can be drafted by an AI model running on your own server. Dashboards show certs expiring, calibration overdue and equipment not yet returned. See CRM.

Implementing the Atlantis ERP in Los Angeles

Atlantis NDT runs implementation remotely, led by founder Anoop Rayavarapu, an ASNT NDT Level III. For a Los Angeles company the order usually depends on which side of the business is under more audit pressure.

  • Aerospace-led: procedures and revision history first, then technician certifications and vision tests, then lab equipment calibration, then report templates per customer.
  • Refinery-led: technicians and radiation records first, then field instruments and reservations, then Team Assignments and Timesheets ahead of the next turnaround, then invoicing with rate multipliers.
  • Structural-led: report templates referencing WPS and drawings, then dispatch for daily calls, then quoting and invoicing by project.

In every case technicians install the offline field app and run live jobs with support. For growing your own bench of technicians, Atlantis offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT training, an eLearning portal and the Practical NDT 3D simulator. Plan your implementation with us.
