Maritime and Marine NDT Inspection Services

Atlantis NDT performs maritime NDT on shipyard welds, hull structure and offshore structures: VT, MT and PT for surface defects, UT and PAUT for weld volume and plate thickness, with reports reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III.

What maritime NDT services cover

Maritime NDT examines welds in new construction and repair, hull plating and structure, and offshore structures. Visual examination comes first on every weld, MT or PT finds surface-breaking cracks, and UT or PAUT examines weld volume and measures plate thickness, with TOFD where the specification calls for it. Atlantis NDT mobilises technicians to shipyards, drydocks and ports anywhere in the USA.

Class surveys and thickness measurement

Hull thickness measurements that support a classification survey are normally taken by a firm the classification society has approved as a service supplier: IACS Unified Requirement Z17, Procedural Requirements for Service Suppliers, includes specific provisions for firms engaged in thickness measurements (UR Z17). Before ordering gauging for a class survey, confirm with the attending classification society which approval the measurements need; acceptance of the results is the attending surveyor's decision.

For NDT on new construction of classed ships and offshore structures, IACS UR W35 sets requirements for NDT suppliers, including the Level 3 who approves procedures: see maritime NDT consulting.

Atlantis NDT structures its marine reports to the content of IACS Recommendation No. 20, IACS UR W11 and IMO MSC.1/Circ.1409 where they apply, for vessels classed with ABS, DNV, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas or another society.

Naval and government ship work

US Navy and Navy-contract work follows NAVSEA Technical Publication T9074-AS-GIB-010/271, which governs NDT personnel, procedures and equipment on that work: personnel are certified under the activity's own written practice developed per ASNT SNT-TC-1A, with additional minimums set by the publication. See NAVSEA NDT requirements for shipyards.

  • Thickness readings tabulated against the locations on your drawing
  • Technician certification and equipment calibration records
  • A report reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III before it is issued

Where we work: nationwide. Technicians are mobilised to your site anywhere in the USA; apart from the Houston office there is no local office, so mobilisation is planned and quoted for each job.

Maritime NDT services: questions

Which NDT methods are used on shipyard welds?

Who accepts the NDT results on a classed vessel?

The attending class surveyor. Atlantis NDT reports the examination against the rules or specification you name, reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III; acceptance of the results is the surveyor's decision.

What do you need from us to quote shipyard NDT?
